  1. Going through old stuff and stumbled across this. What a pain in the ass this could be to use, but damn if I don't have fond memories using it! If all you've ever known is editing on a PC then you don't know what it was like back in the old days! This is what I started on 20 years ago, when I was a 14 year old video geek!

  2. Actually, I've found all content of presentation in general more serious - as little bit shameless: actually showing anything but achiеvable possible plan. Even about future codec their words are shamelessly indeterminate: "codecs will be best possible for video work"... i. e. clearly with idea to wait and see what other manufacturers will do and than try to surpass their offer. Probably having better cooling know-how and codec-science knowledge in sleeves by which could beat concurrency, I think that Panasonic makes step further in a cheap (and not just a bit dirty) game of delaying, aka stealing time as more and more main business strategy... What is ugly to me is that Panasonic indeed can - as it looks like - make, for example 24-105 lens with f4 , f2.8, maybe even spectacular f2 - but decision again depends solely of selling need - as they come out with m43 10-25 f1.7 lens only just at the moment when m43 system selling seems jeopardized... It has to be tolerated, but lesser from company that earlier had idea of "serving to community with best possible tools" as one of the main marketing motto... What a difference in comparison to proudly disclosure announce of GH5 with road map... Of course, all such business background procrastinated estimations are logical and even expected, but know they are made so brutally obvious that looks to me very unattractive - even if there's no any doubt that Panasonic easily could make the best and most advance offering.

  3. Hell by the time you put a battery grip, a SSD, a mike, a cage, ND filters, oh and you Need a Gimbal because it has no IBIS, a wireless focus controller because it has no continuous AF, you might as well carry around a Arri Alexa!

  6. @webrunner5 posted it above. I didn’t want to directly embed because I didn’t want any confusion in this GH5 thread since that was shot with a 7D. But my original point stands... if you already have a camera that is really good, in this case the GH5, then don’t worry about what else is available or will be available, just go out and produce work. This is very hard for me sometimes because I want to try all cameras but what I already own is way more than enough. And in Jonesy’s case the GH5 is also way more than enough. And with Sage’s color, the GH5 is a top notch tool.

  8. And we see absolute magic coming from people that wouldn't have been able to operate or afford to make anything on that old equipment. The old days aren't better, or worse, they are just different. Get over it. Anyone who has the privilege to be able to do something and is complaining that too many people also have that privilege is just showing fear of being inadequate. Master artists aren't campaigning for schools to stop giving students access to art supplies!

Sorry, Yeah, was just going off current £2.5K for the Sony and £3.5K for the Leica. God knows what the UK price will be post Brexit when it's probably launched. Probably cost 500 pairs of Levis, 10 sacks of potatoes and 25 LPs of music from Western bands. I definitely think that both that Panasonic and the Samsung whose name escapes me with the zoom lens would have found the world had come round to meet them if they did new versions.

  10. To those awaiting your Pocket4K's.....stock up on LPE6 batteries! So far I've only used the camera with the battery that it's supplied with but the camera chews through it at an alarming rate. Also, the battery meter with the supplied battery is not very reliable at all. It jumps around from 1/2, back up to 3/4 then flashes red for less than a minute and dies. The first few times I used it, the camera died when the meter showed more than half remaining but with a few discharges and charges of the battery, I think it's getting better. I haven't done any real tests to test record time but I got less than an hour of powered up time before it died. I was shooting outside though, with the screen at 100% brightness (more on that below). The manual states that the battery meter can be set to show a remaining percentage with supported batteries but the BMD battery does not seem to be supported as I only have the option to show the battery graphical icon (unreliable) or voltage. I have four Wasabi 2600mah batteries arriving on Monday so will test with those. In direct sunlight, the screen is not really usable. At 100% and with a LUT on it makes it a little easier to see, but it's highly reflective and not quite bright enough especially showing a flat Film Log image. I'll need to make a shade for it, but then with it not being tiltable will mean that II'll have to hold it at eye level when shooting with is not comfortable and doesn't lend itself to steady shots. BTW, sorry, I wasn't able to do the sound tests yesterday. The inbuilt mics sound pretty good and you only really hear the fan if you are in a dead quiet room. I should be able to do it on Monday. So far, the battery and screen issues are disappointing BUT I am absolutely LOVING the images the camera is producing. The images are very detailed but not too sharp (a good thing!). I have shot with most DSLR's out there from Sony Aseries, Panasonic GH series, Fuji X-T2 and have never seen any Hybrid cameras produce the images the Pocket4K does.......and this is just shooting ProResLT to an SD card as thats all I had on me at the times.

  12. Tried a Z7 today. It feels extremely good. Also the 24-70 lens feels great, better than my Fujinon 16-55 2.8. All the buttons and controls feel incredibly good. The joystick and AF ON button are in perfect place and well sized. Usable with winter gloves. The shutter release feels fantastic. The sound of the shutter is also really great. If the Z6 feels as good, which it should considering the body is exactly the same, it’s a home run. Pre-ordered.

  13. Thanks Christian, I appreciate that Well spotted; I had a conversation a bit ago with the creator of the video, and he said that he didn't like something about the greens from the conversion, and tried to correct for that. Indeed, a signature quality of Alexa color is slightly cyanish greens, and I think this is probably what he felt must have been a mistake. This is what the greens look like from the current raw conversion: It will; trying to get this ready as fast as possible. The key for Main/Soft is moderate exposure (avoid over/under) -5 on sharp/NR is the closest in cam to Arri texture (doesn't affect color though). I prefer no further processing in post (ideally well lit, focused etc) The only necessary correction for a moderately exposed GHa shot is to set the black level Also, the OLPF setting is simply fantastic for achieving the Alexa texture; the PDF will be updated on this as well (in Premiere, the preview can look a bit softer than actual export; the texture is decidedly improved and smoother) @PannySVHS He isn't; I found him through a reddit post. I'll see if he might drop by to chat @Jonesy Jones Impressive work.

  14. What struck me most about the presentation was how 'photography centric' it was. It was 95% about photography. The presentation was titled 'Lumix - changing photography'. There were 3 Lumix brand ambassadors - all of them photographers. When the slide with the two cameras came up - the high resolution camera didnt even mention video.... My guess is that their 'photographer brand ambassadors' made it clear to Panasonic that an M43 sized sensor simply doesnt cut it in the professional 'photography' market and that this is a market that they feel they need to be in (and I suspect the G9 hasnt sold well). So Panasonic are going FF mainly to try and capture the pro photography market. Comments about 'best possible codec' are entirely meaning less and cant be conflated into 'internal raw recording' - noone is going to say that they plan to have a 'crummy video codec.'

This is what I am talking about. When I say this japanese industry does not innovate at all. Bigger screen, ssd, integrated lightroom and direct share. This should be in our mirrorless cameras for 2 years. No they will keep the same button layout and design and screen as 10y ago. This camera will be probably niche and expensive, but bravo Zeiss.

  19. Mr. Jones, the work you did with the 7D was simply astonishing, I am still trying to remember to watch the film but the trailer alone is amazing. So, in my opinion, you don’t need the P4K, you already have what you need. Hell, you could get by with a lot less. Yes, somewhere upthread, Sage has a link to the CineLikeD version. I assume it’s still active.

  20. Concerning the body design/controls: I'm personally happy with the size and format, but then again Panasonic was always a company that understood a camera should be as hefty as needed for the application. I know that it will not make a difference to the final design, but I do wish they could implement a few design traits: 1) WTF is with this on/off switch? Why can't it be around the shutter button? As it is now, it needs an awkward thumb movement to use 2) I wish the front/rear control wheels were metal. I know it makes no difference in use but I'm spoiled with the feel on my Fujis 3) Why can't we have a mirrorless camera with backlit buttons? Nobody shoots in dark venues anymore? 4) I liked the X-H1 top panel so much (with ability to show info even with the camera off) that seeing this orange-lit display makes me cringe a bit 5) When other companies are going to steel Canon's idea of recessed strap eyelets?

  21. All of the following photos were shot with my Canon FD 85mm F1.2 from 1976 on the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Medium format at F1.2?! Yes, it works and no vignetting! I am really interested in what Fuji is doing at the moment, but with the most interesting cameras at the show just a development announcement and dummy body-design, we'll have to wait a bit longer for them to truly reveal their cards. 22. Even under daylight well exposed it was clear which camera was which with the gh5 having a rather pale green desaturated look to the skintones. The pocket had some vitality to the skintones but was a bit too sharp for my liking. And the alexa was head and shoulders above the others.

  23. If you have to work with lights that are already there (like an event or a wedding) it is not necessarily that simple. Also, it is nice to be able to achieve any look that one wants or prefers, but it may take time that is not being reflected in the amount the client is willing to pay. So in that way, a camera that has a pleasant baked-in look may matter. You also use one differently to another, and it may affect the outcome. One needs to use it well, whatever that is, but for every video saying the gear does not matter there is another one saying that it kind of does. Nice work anyway.

  24. When I worked at the local production house I used Video Toaster 3000 but I could never afford to get it on my own for my gigs / work. I was a broke teenager! I liked though how easy the Videonics stuff was to transport, since I did quite a bit of live switching at professional wrestling events. Just needed my two TVs, my VCR, and the 2-3 cameras, along with the cables, and I was good to go!

  25. This is speculation, but I think one of the reasons they've focused on the photography aspect is because the success of the camera long term hinges on photographers adopting the system. They've already established themselves with video shooters and know they have their attention, so it would make sense to focus on the photography side in the early stages.

  27. I feel like I've said this way too many times here, and people probably think I'm just trolling bc no one ever responds to it- when I spent a week with the X-H1, I found the ibis to be almost unusable for video, unless you are standing completely still, way to jerky otherwise. Has this changed, or is this not your experience with it? I would possibly return my X-T3 and go with the X-H1 if I thought the stabilization had improved (I'm coming from past GH5 ownership so I'm spoiled in the stabilization department and prefer good stabilization over 10bit if I had to choose), esp since, knowing Fuji, the X-H1 may get some of the X-T3's features at some point through firmware.

  28. I went through basically the same thing with m4/3... the Minoltas are great glass, but unfortunately just a bit too short of a flange to adapt to any modern SLR mount. I've never found the cheap boosters to be up to snuff- flaring, soft corners, low contrast, backfocus going out because the adjustment screw goes loose, sloppy fits... just a lot of frustration. I went through a few and eventually just had to plunk down on two used Metabones boosters, one for the MDs and one for my Nikon glass. Then the A7III came out, and I realized that it was actually way cheaper than a GH5 with the two Metabones, with less fuss. Plus now I can use an ND Throttle adapter for outdoors stuff, and have even less fuss with external NDs.

  29. I don’t get this. Panasonic sell tiny numbers of EVA1, and their market share in mirrorless is tiny, so you saying Panasonic need to discourage people buying the S1 to protect the EVA1 which is in a totally different category? If this S1 isn’t going to be a complete niche flop Panasonic need to go balls out with everything they’ve got to get even 1% of Sony FF business.

  34. The 18-55 is what it is, a small, cheap, above average kit lens, the AF is good and smooth. I've yet to try the 16-55, so can't give a direct comparison, but the 18-55 doesn't have the soul of the prime lens, which is to be expected.

  41. If a men need manual lenses to feel real, AF is not the problem. Waiting game. In Formula 1 racing, sometimes the teams keep waiting (and even faking) the moment of tyre change to try to get the opponent of guard and gain an advantage. In this case, I think that Panasonic is clearly waiting to see what Sony will bring to the A7SIII, and release the S cameras with the exactly set to compete or beat it - and hopefully (for them) not going too far and robbing EVA1 buyers. I also think that the kind of huge size of the S cameras is exactly go crazy in video specs if they needed large heat dissipation - if not need, they could use the handling excuse. I'm not buying the 70%-30% video using - Panasonic should know that their strong point over the others is superior video performance. Already stating 4K60 is another hint in that direction.

  43. Firstly, this is confusing terminology. Wider apertures are considered "faster". So the f1.4 lens is "faster" than the f2. I believe what you mean is "quicker". As in quicker to focus. That said, the slower but newer f2 lenses are very snappy when focusing. Also of interest for video work is the fact that they are near silent in operation. When I purchased the X-T3 I was sure to get the newer f2 trinity so as to cover the bases for video. But after reading many reviews I was compelled to also add the 16mm f1.4. Which by many accounts is one of the best lenses ever made.

  45. I remember when I brought the 1Dx II more than two years ago and a lot of people were saying when the Sony A7s III will come, when the G5 will come, when this and when that.... 2.5 years after if you need 4k 60p and great AF the 1Dx II is probably still the best choice. It is not perfect but is a great camera. Considering that it is a 2.5 years old model I would try to find a used one instead of buying a new one... Pro: 4k60p with great quality Super video AF Solid codec 4:2:2 (funny that everybody is saying that the EOS R has fixed the codec but the ALL-I at 480Mbits is 4:2:0, I take the 1Dx II at 500Mbits 4:2:2, the addition of the 120mbits h264 is anyway welcome on the R) Very good rolling shutter 4k120p with AF (quality ok, not great) Super sports/actions camera for photo Very quick camera to operate Cons: No C-Log Expensive CFcard for 4k60 are expensive but got cheaper lately Big and heavy No Zebra Fix LCD If you do only video I think the C200 is a better buy but if you want a camera that does it all the 1Dx II is a solid choice (assuming that 4k60p and great video AF are key requirements)

  46. @wolf33d The Panasonic will not be out anytime soon... if ever with those specs. Keep in mind these are rumors and they are rumors about a prototype. Remember seven years ago when Panasonic showed that prototype organic sensor? Well we are still waiting on that one. So I would take any rumors with a grain of salt if looking to buy into a system in the near term. Also, a GH camera with those specs would render the EVA1 obsolete. @mkabi Comparing the X-T3 to the 1DXMk2 is a bit strange to me. The Fuji is a great camera with great build, but I would never consider it to be a replacement for the 1DXMk2. For me it is a wonderful little travel camera, whereas the 1DXMk2 is a workhorse. I just got in the Fuji today, so who knows my opinion could change, but I really doubt it's going to. If you are planning on getting into a system, there is nothing at all wrong with Canon's flagship DSLR. As for the A7S3... is there not a rumor that Sony is planning to kill that camera? For myself, I don't buy rumors... unless we are talking stocks. When it comes to cameras I buy what is actually available... because, there will always be something better rumored... that's the point.

  47. That's interesting. Back when I first heard of the rumours Samsung were exiting the market, I wrote one of the first articles about it, and shortly afterwards I got an email completely out of the blue from Samsung's marketing person (quite high up in Germany and Europe), saying it "didn't reflect Samsung's position" and they wanted to rebut the article. Come a few days later, he just dropped off the radar and I never heard from him again. I think Samsung's marketing and PR agencies were amongst the last to know. I'd be fascinated to know if Samsung canned a full frame NX2. Stranger things have happened. I bet they regret it now, having had the chance to be first to the full frame mirrorless market after Sony and seeing the sales hike in the past 3 years. Smoothed out, 8bit look? Well I think 10bit at 400Mbit helps a lot for skin tones! If film grain can finally be enabled in video mode, that can help as well. We'll see some amazing results. 100% sure of it.
