    My New Pocket4K Android App

    Pleased to announce that my Pocket4K app for Android is now complete and is with beta testers so barring any calamties will be available from the Play store on the 21st of December. Here is a screen shot with a quick run through of the features from top to bottom : Across the top we have the controls for Aperture, ISO and shutter angle. Next up we have the colour temperature and tint controls, the preset white balance selectors, the Auto White Balance button and, of course, the Record button. Beneath that we have the 8 snapshot memories which you can use to store and instantly recall 8 different custom settings of ISO, Aperture, Shutter Angle and White Balance. To store the preset you long press on the memory slot that you want to use and to recall it just short press. Haptic feedback is given to indicate that the preset has been written and the currently loaded preset is denoted in orange (M1 in the shot above). Presets are stored in non volatile memory so are always available in any session. Next is the focus controller, which is operated using the slider and/or the fine tune buttons. A long press of the button moves instantly to closest focus and infinity respectively. The AF button in ths row activates the single shot auto focus. To accompany the focus controls, you then have 6 memory slots (A to F) to store focus points and you can switch instantly between them by simply pressing the required one. In addition, next to these are the controls for A-B-A focus transition and the speed control. Again, all focus points are stored in non volatile memory for use in any session. Finally we have the controls for applicable MFT power zoom lenses with the same interface as the focus controls (including long press for instant minimum/maximum zoom) and 4 non volatile memory positions for later recall. There is another function that it can do that I'll let you know about closer to release date and I will put up a little demo video of it in action late next week.

The 3C app is now officially available from the Play store for Android devices. 3C enables you to remotely control and monitor the primary functions of your Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K from an Android device using Bluetooth LE. Using 3C, you have access to the following camera functionality. Aperture ISO Shutter Angle White Balance Record Focus & Zoom (with compatible lenses) With 3C you can also store your own custom setting sets for exposure, focus and zoom parameters for later recall as well as automate transitions between stored focus points*. For ease of use, 3C uses a single screen touch interface to control all of this functionality and avoid the need for you to have to activate any sub-menus to change settings. 3C has a scalable user interface to enable you to remove focus and zoom controls from the screen should you not require them and wish to run the app on a small screen Android device. In addition, 3C can also be used as an interface hub to enable control of the camera from compatible Bluetooth gamepads.     GH5 to Alexa Conversion

    Sure; it depends on what you'd like. Fuji and BMD have very good, usable color. I personally will use P4K with GH5; I hope to have EC to do a production this summer. 8 bit is tricky; I'd prefer to only support 10 bit cameras, though I will try to find a way that will give viable production level results with 8-bit. I think Log is not really in the cards there. Bit of really cool news; last weekend, the director of a film starring Josh Hartnett wrote to me to say that they were using the GH5 with EC as a pick-up cam alongside Alexa Minis and XTs. He said that a senior Star Wars colorist was doing the grade, and said that 'everybody was very impressed' with it. I was pretty thrilled with that

    For long-time GH1 to GH5 shooters like myself, loyal from the beginning, at a time everyone else was shooting Canon, the S1 is a milestone. I have a bit of an emotional attachment to it already, being the first Panasonic full frame camera. It is not my first L-mount camera though. I’ve been shooting with the Leica SL for a few years now and it is still the most clean, ergonomic, minimalist full frame mirrorless body. It cannot, however, match the sheer size of the feature-set on the £2000 Panasonic S1. Read the full article

    cinematic color?

    Does anyone else seem to remember that this question has popped up on here previously at some point? As far as I recall, the general consensus was that you need to go into the Settings menu of the camera and make sure "Motion Cadence Colour Science Mojo" is set to ON. Have a go with the Search option just to make sure I've remembered correctly though.

    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

    If you want a bit of an insight into how relatively rare this camera still is in the wild, I doubled the amount of Pocket 4K cameras that were being used at the BVE Expo in London today when I got mine out of my bag. I plonked it down on a table that Zeiss had left brochures on but abandoned to setup my app and immediately drew a crowd who thought I was an exhibitor. Of course I did not disabuse any of them of this belief and promptly started demoing the living daylights out of my app.

    I'm excited to share my new travel film I shot over 4 days in Yellowstone in August. This was my first video on GH5. I learned allot on this shoot. I hope you sit back and watch on a decent screen with some good sound and enjoy some CinemaScope nature bliss. Cheers. Filmed on the Panasonic GH5. Filmed in HLG and Cine D profiles. Colored with Film Convert. Anamorphic lens used were the Baby Hypergonar 1.75x, Bolex 8/19 1.5x and 16/32 1.5x Anamorphot. The Rectilux 3FF-s variable diopter and closeup lens. Taking lens used Pentax 300mm DA f4, MeVis 35mm f1.6, Carl Zeiss 100mm f2.8 and Pen F 38mm f1.8 with wide angle attachment in front.

    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

    Hello everybody! So, I've attended the Blackmagic Raw seminar held at CVP here in London yesterday and I thought I'd share some impressions: Let's start with the bad news first: unfortunately there is no official release date for BRAW on the PCC4K yet.. They confirmed it is coming to the camera 100% but they want to make absolutely sure that the update is safe and won't brick the camera (which sounds like a sensible plan indeed!) 🙂 That been said I can't wait to have the option to use BRAW, it's such a clever and well implemented solution and i reckon it will be the best choice on the PCC4K for 90% of the occasions. What really impressed me is how good the performance is in Resolve compared to CNDG, it is entirely possile to edit BRAW on a laptop without creating optimised media and/or dropping the resolution. To drive the point home even more they worked on a grading project that was hosted on a USB 3.0 spinning drive and it worked flawlessly, i was quite shocked when I saw a clip with a speed ramp set in optical flow playing at 24fps at full quality on an entry level MBP! Another super clever feature of BRAW is the ability to shoot with any dynamic range preset and being able to revert back to film mode afterwards, that is pretty awesome for dailies or things like that. I also very appreciated the fact that they were totally sincere in showing us the difference in visual quality between BRAW and CDNG and, although there is a slight difference in quality with CDNG being a bit sharper, said difference is only visible in extreme magnification (pixel peeping basically) so in real life BRAW is perfectly adequate especially considering the many advantages it offers in terms of workflow. The Blackmagic guys reckoned that CDNG would be the best choice only in very specific situations where having the best quality possible is paramount (like VFX for istance). Overall it's been a very interesting demonstration and i think BRAW will make the PCC4K even better value for money, exciting times ahead!

    I put together a Interview Lighting kit that fits all into a backpack including 3 light stands, batteries, chargers and umbrellas. Got to test it out Saturday night and its perfect for interviews when traveling and I believe everything should be safe to carry on a plane. The new Aputure Amaran AL-F7 on camera LED light' have a very good energy efficiency when set at 55k color temperature and along with the GH5S and A7S Mk ii low light capabilities got me thinking about making a very useful scaled down lighting kit for travel. I am using 4x Aputure Amaran AL-F7 LEDs with batteries. Each NP970 battery is getting little over 2.5hrs on a full charge. I have 10 in the kit giving me at least 5hrs of battery life plus 2 extra when running all 4 lights at 100%. In the images below I have some screen grabs from the interview I did last Saturday. I got with my GH5S with the Metabones Speed Booster F2 at ISO 400 with V-Log. The close up shot was with the A7S MK II at ISO 2000 with F2.8 while being 1 stop over exposed for SLog. I did a lot of looking around and for diffusing the key and fill and the best thing for being fast and compact enough to fit with in the backpack were Westcott Collapsible umbrella. So even though I own a lot of lighting and grip gear I can find myself using this very often. Air Travel would be a big one. Cramped spaces like offices or small living rooms for interviews. But also when I do documentaries sometimes the subject being interviewed can be intimated by lots of lighting and grip gear. This would give me the freedom to make the subject feel comfortable. The kit with everything in the list below was $1050. Let me know what you think, if you have any questions or suggestions for improvements.     Hello! I have new stills from a recent shot I was DPing. It's another theme, Kinda of game of thrones thing 😉. I think this is a good point of reference to see how color look in this type of forest/swamp with those costumes and production design. Here i used some old vintage Takumar lenses because of the organic look they have, i think they help to sell the fantasy theme. I use the same procedure I always do, and my style of grade using GHa Daylight to LogC. And diffusion LOT of diffusion!

    FWIW, one of the favorite docs I shot was with a GM1 handheld. There's a lot of things to worry about with making movies. Sure, camera mass is one of them, but, to me, pretty inconsequential on the priority list.

    A few of my 2018 winners would be : "Signpost Award" : Insta 360 One X, not for its actual 360 necessarily but for pointing the way to how much that omni-capture can bring to the table in terms of stabilisation and re-framing for regular flat content. I picked one up just before Christmas and whilst its not my first rodeo when it comes to 360 cameras, its the first one that has really delivered on the shoot now frame later concept. Don't get me wrong, it is full of flaws but it is very close to being there for being the first choice leisure/travel/vlogging camera for a lot of people. It doesn't take much imagination to consider the possibilities for other type of film making as well if manufacturers like Pansonic, Fuji, Sony etc were so inclined. "Hannibal Lecter Award" : Fuji for cannibalising sales of its video centric X-H1 by having better video specs on the X-T3. "Bob Marley Award" : Jointly won by Sony for making everyone Wait In Vain for the A7Siii and Blackmagic for the Pocket 4K batteries Jamming. "Horticultural Award" : The Blackmagic Pocket 4K for sprouting more plants than the Chelsea Flower Show in this forum in September.

    Fuji X-T3 reborn with HLG

    Since posting this a while ago: ..I've been exploring the power of HLG picture profile introduced two months after X-T3's release. I'm pleasantly surprised by the refreshingly new colorimetry and better (not higher) dynamic range distribution. To me, X-T3 now feels like a completely new camera shooting with HLG. So long F-log! Here's a better comparison than the one from my previous post: F-log with Alexa LUT generated by LUTCalc, no grading, WB 5300K, Shift 0: HLG with Alexa LUT generated by LUTCalc, no grading, WB 5300K, Shift 0: It's clear that HLG completely removes the magenta hue in F-log and renders shades of blue in a way that's reminiscent of Alexa. Reds are deeper and richer with very little orange shift seen in F-log images. Also, HLG makes full use of 0-1024 10bit code value, while F-log throws away 0-95 which could contribute to banding. Here's a graded frame from a feature film I'm currently shooting, entirely using X-T3 outputting HLG to Ninja V. Raw HLG frame: HLG mapped to ARRI Log C Wide Gamut using LUTCalc: Observations for working with HLG on X-T3: 1. Respect the ISO1000 rating and be extra careful, do not over/under-expose more than 0.5 stop, ideally should be spot-on. HLG wasn't intended to be an acquisition format so there's very little room for error. 2. In low key scenes (like the one above), shadow area will have visible grain, with ProRes HQ 10bit 422 recording, the noise pattern is pleasing and monochromatic with a fine 35mm texture, turn in-camera noise reduction off (-4) and "interframe NR" off to preserve the texture, otherwise you get blotchy patterns. 3. An external monitor/recorder with custom 3D LUT feature is a must. X-T3's HLG implementation follows ARIB STD-B67 NHK spec which places middle grey much much lower than BBC spec. You need custom LUTs to help you preview final exposure, otherwise it's hard to see what's going on in the scene and may lead you to overexpose. 4. HLG has a slightly cooler white balance compared to F-log and film sim, so be careful setting the kelvin value. Factor this in when lighting and developing looks for your film. Another reason why a colour accurate external monitor/recorder would be extremely helpful when shooting HLG. 5. Ideally you should shoot HLG with external ProRes HQ 10bit 422 codec due to the aggressive tone curve manipulation in post. Minimum is 400Mbps in-camera HEVC. 6. In post, use a BT.2100 HLG to Alexa 709 3D LUT for grading, HLG uses BT.2020 gamut so you should map it to a BT.709 gamut first, do not grade directly and simply add saturation, the colours will be wrong. Alternatively map it to ARRI Log C gamut and use popular film print LUTs.

    I was messing with some old, test shots from my film. This one was shot with the older non-ai version of the Nikkor 28mm f/2. I’m still deciding on a monitor, so this was graded with my non-calibrated MacBook Air... I’m slowly narrowing down my lens sets... finally.

    I agree. Having the tech just work and get out of the way is the ultimate situation. We're making art after all, the last thing we need is to be trying to also deal with the technical stuff at the same time. I really think that BM are playing the long game and have set their vision to be really high and are making bold steps to get there. Some fun facts (via wikipedia😞 DaVinci had been making colour correction systems since 1985 Resolve was released in 2004 BM bought DaVinci in 2009, at which time Resolve was selling with dedicated hardware solutions for $200k-800k 2010 they released a software-only version for $995 and the hardware version dropped to $30k 2011 they introduced a free version 2013 version 10 introduced video editing 2014 version 11 introduced audio mixing to complete it as a stand-alone NLE 2016 BM buys Fairlight and version 14 includes an integrated version of it 2018 version 15 includes a version of Fusion That is a pretty spectacular timeline. In a decade it went from being $200-800K with hardware and colour only to having free, software-only versions available, and integrating world-leading colour with editing, audio, and VFX functionality. Hardware is obviously more difficult to make those kinds of advances on, but the original BMPCC and now P4K kind of fit that description. I remember Elon Musk talking about reducing the cost of things by 90% and that idea of radical change seems to also be occurring here. Other vendors don't seem to really be dancing to the same tune.

    We write the file headers/close the file every 5 secs during record, our cameras since the BMCC have always periodically written the headers/closed the file so at most if you lose power you might lose the last 5 secs of the clip. If you lose power before 5 secs of recording, then it could be an issue.

    Shot this video using GHaV3 Lut on GH5s. Followed the guides in the documentations, just drop the LUT in the timeline and tweak the mid-tones, shadow and highlights as suggested. I'm loving the colors!

    I'm going to bang the Ninja Star drum again but I've got to say that if they were going to split the Ninja V into its two component parts then they've arguably decided to sell the wrong half ! Don't get me wrong, its a great monitor for that price but at £349 the extra £200 for the Ninja V having the recorder is almost a no brainer. Whereas if they reversed that equation and made a compact recorder only version for £200 then everyone who's cameras offer enhanced frame rates and bit rates over HDMI only would be all over it. And while we're at it, Atomos would also have a big hit by doing an affordable EVF.

    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

    Pairing the Pocket 4K with some good vintage glass is pretty blissful. There's been a lot of talk about how it looks more digital and modern than the previous BMD cameras - and yeah sure, I guess it's not as organic and grainy as the 2,5K. But throw on some c-mount glass or a speedbooster and old Pentax stuff and the camera sings. Haven't used it with this kind of setup on a production yet, (it's playing second fiddle to the Ursa Mini and been on a gimbal on about half a dozen shoots now) but I'm just having a lot of fun taking it on a walk and just taking some throwaway nature shots. It's something I used to do back when I used the 5DMK2 regularly, and I'm happy it has revitalized that habit again. This was taken with the speedbooster and a Pentax 35/2.3 M42 lens on a cool winter afternoon. One of my favourites due to the very distinctive, oil painting-kinda way it renders out of focus areas and the transition between them and in-focus areas.

    This is the official start (and maybe quick death!) of the...... 3 Hour 1 Minute Film Challenge!!!1 The rules: You setup, shoot, edit, and upload a film in a single 3-hour period - no gaps, once you start the timer you can't stop it again The final film must be 1 minute or less If your finished film looks too good then others can challenge you about the 3-hour time limit and you must explain yourself to keep your reputation in tact There are no prizes, no timeframes, and no judging Everyone that makes a film and publishes it is a winner, people that don't try are losers, and people that try but fail should learn from their mistakes and just try again There are no more rules FAQ: Can I plan things in advance? Yes. What limits are there for budget, cast size, crew size, and number of otters making cameos? None. Why are you doing this? Why not? No, really.. why? We learn by trying new things, finishing and sharing them. Too many people obsess over tiny things and never get anything done. This challenge is designed to combat that. What advice do you have? You can be an extra special winner if you: Publish in 720p - equipment shouldn't matter and if your film looks dull in 720 then 4K will not save you Try new things and experiment - think of this as going to the gym for film-makers where you can push yourself to learn and if it fails then who cares (it was only 3 hours right?) Encourage others by being helpful and supportive Have cameos from otters Film a timelapse as a BTS so others can see how you did it - an action camera is a good choice for this* (* if you wear it on your person, please remember to turn it off when you visit the bathroom) Invite friends over to help Focus on having fun and enjoying the process (having so much fun you didn't finish the film in time is also a kind of winning) Call your mother (after you've hit upload) It sounds like fun but I don't know where to start? Set a timer for 1-hour, plan the video, when the timer runs out, reset it and shoot, when the timer runs out, reset it for 45 minutes and edit, when the timer runs out hit export, then upload. Then have lunch, put in a fresh battery and SD card, then start the timer again.... I look forward to seeing the first films posted below in about 3 hours time.

    I've just discovered the secret to success in this industry -- be very critical of the image made by any camera other than Alexa, and you are instantly a top notch dp in the class of Roger Deakins. Here is a list of terms to help your complaints sound more legit: Lacks DR (dynamic range) Poor highlight roll off Contrasty Not contrasty Bad motion cadence Too digital Too flat Plasticy Too noisy Too clean Poor focus roll off Macro blocking Micro jitters Sucky suck suck Now, if those alone aren't getting you the status you deserve, try these ones. They almost sound made up, but no one will ever question you and will repeat them until they become an actual thing. Sharpening halos Pixel fringing Quasar vignette Noise population ratio Telecentric converters And if you find you need to take it even further, take a screenshot of footage that you put zero production value in, like a chair in a poorly lit office, magnify 300 percent, and then... wait for it......... wait for it......... draw a friggin arrow to the pixel in question. I'll have plenty more suggestions in my upcoming mzed class... Seriously, there is a clear world of difference between being a negative Nelly and simply recognizing a camera's pros and cons. ALL CAMERAS have pros and cons. Looking at them in those terms is about making decisions and problem solving , not complaining.

    These are HD frame grabs with the Mamiya 80mm and 55mm + Medium Format Speedbooster. My current favorite lens to use is the 150mm f3.5. The crop factor ends up at x0.7. Still working out the shipping details but it looks like I will test it on the MAVO soon.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

    Wanted to share more GX85 Cine-D samples. It's fun to carry around with the 14-42mm pancake for impromptu video when I'm not using it for photos. Additional coloring was done on top of GHa.

    I thought for the longest time it was just kids on the internet with an apsc sony (like I had in 2016). Then I was flown out to NYC for some banking superday interviews; I was walking the isle & heard a 55-60 year old man introduce himself to someone next to him. He led by: "I am a successful photographer! I do magazine advertisements." He then pointed to a guy with his wife in front of me that had a smaller nikon camera around his neck & said "but I dont shoot with a piece of S%$! like that, I shoot sony". I really was stunned at the arrogance of this little man, it made me think that he was highly insecure. I wanted to get him worked up a bit, so when I passed him I said "sony has disgusting skin tones" & smiled. The guy jumped up and started screaming haha, I thought he was going to get himself put on a no fly list. Bank gave me a crap econ seat, so I was about a mile away from him after that. Took 30min to get off the plane after flying 5hrs from the western U.S., that little prick was waiting for me to scream some more 🤣. I just ignored him with my headphones in, he followed me with his phone out to take pictures or film idk. I'm sure I am on some little blog post somewhere haha. That was my first experience with a sony "fanboy" in person.
