  2. I've spent weeks wracking my brain on how Matt Granger made it to 661,000 subscribers And I just can't possibly figure it out. But it has happened and Matt is one of THE authorities on cameras. Although sometimes he gets confused about the concept of a mirrorless camera. "It shoots up to approximately 20fps with the mirror up" THIS explains everything, including why I always had problems with that imaginary mirror in my GH5, it always seems to stay up out of the way and never make that satisfying flippy flippy sound. Then it REALLY got me fhinking... why is it called a mirrorless? The world is a really weird place, very confusing. So I often turn to YouTube for the sheer quality of talent on there and the expertise to enlighten me in dark times... With the gift of knowledge. In fact I envy the man. He is one of the biggest and best commentators along with the Northrup's and their whiteboard. Who can say they don't deserve it.... The 5 minutes he spends quibbling over the difference between 19.1fps and 20fps is pure entertainment. I have subscribed and smashed the notifications button.

    Fuji X-T4

As a small camera, I'll be happy with X-H2 style X-T4... Basically the X-H1 body design but with X-T3 video specs and a bit extra, like an anamorphic mode. Doesn't have to be 6K or 4K 120fps! I will always need a good Super 35mm option for my Arriflex lenses and LOMO OCT19 Anamorphic better suited to S35 as well. Not everything has to be a full frame R5 monster cam and cost $4000!

  4. As far as ergonomics & features, the Canon competition have to start implementing stuff like internal NDs.. Sony especially should include the FS5's Vari-ND tech inside Alpha series. I don't see them going too far up resolution/codec wise because of XDCam cannibalisation fear. Panasonic are in the best position to compete on that front, but they really need to sort out PDAF, and maybe hire better design team (take some cues from Leica ffs)! Fuji, I'd love them to do a proper cine cam, but make it radical by taking cues from retro 8mm pistol cams:

  6. I wonder what percentage of $3000 these licensing deals actually would cost the Japanese camera makers. Just pass the cost onto the customer and they will gladly pay. Who would turn down Alexa colour science and ProRes RAW for $300 extra? We are talking top end cutting edge mirrorless cameras not consumer low-end. Or do a patent swap. The main challenge will be getting Arri and Apple to agree, me thinks.

    Fuji X-T4

I don't feel this way. The X-T3 is an awesome camera and many have said, how much they like the camera. If asked what was missing in the last months, no one said 6K or 4K 120fps. It was IBIS and better battery life all the time. The X-T4 seems to deliver just that. If they manage to get the price close to the X-T3 price, that's an outstanding value.

  8. Heyy guys!!! so, I had an epiphany~! (maybe) it seems to me that if you wanna make money on youtube, you need to, above all else, upload constantly. like, at least weekly, right? some ppl have a new video every frickin day, or more than one~! ive never had the vaguest ambition to do anything like that, im not about filming stuff all the time, u kno? i like to do the opposite, film stuff never ? anyway, i have a new lil st bernard pup, and people LOVE st bernards~! and on top of that my other dog is a beast of a hybrid st bernard/great dane/mastiff, so... instead of JUST taking stills of the lil guy as hes growing up, why not shoot some videos? i live in a beautiful forest, i think theyd be great~! they may be glorified home videos, but who cares~! i mean, I'M on youtube searching for st bernards myself lol. and ill update it all the time with lil fun clips, and weekly weigh ins ? so, i need youtube tips!!! help me yall!!! i need to make some money for my next film and i suck at illustrating childrens books i hate it smh. how do i get hundreds of thousands or millions of views so i can serve up youtubes precious ads to the masses addendum: heres a video woth 7.9 million views but as you can see, that channel only has 14k subscribers... from what ive read you need 10k subscribers just to monetize videos at all, is that correct? ugh that sucks!

  12. This past year, I’ve had a HUGE personal revelation concerning digital cameras. Firstly, the Pocket 4K has opened my eyes to the image quality and flexibility that is missing in any camera that lacks RAW or near-raw codec options. It really is a sticking point for me at this juncture, and sets apart what I would trust as a professional tool from what is prosumer. I just don’t want that uncertainty about quality during production. Secondly, I recently got a 16mm camera, and there’s still in 2020 NOTHING digital that can touch real film. There’s just not. The nuance in color, detail, highlight retention, everything... it is simply unmatched. Only ARRI gets anywhere near the ballpark. The myriad of other cameras, even cinema cameras, are of course capable of producing beautiful images, but they don’t come out of the gate like ARRI does. That first test roll of Vision3 500T scanned you an SSD full on blew my mind, and I was going into it expecting to be impressed. Now, instead of obsessing over which new multi-thousand dollar digital camera body I should commit to for the next four or so years, I’m obsessing over what I might shoot on a few thousand dollars of celluloid this year. IMO everyone should shoot film once. Honestly, 16mm cameras are not terribly expensive, even good ones with crystal sync and quiet operation for sound recording compatibility. Excluding getting your own, many rental houses still have SRs just sitting around, and will rent them out for very reasonable rates. Kodak has labs all over the place, most of them staffed by wonderful and helpful people. Obviously, there’s no permanent replacement for the convenience of digital cameras in the modern content creation environment, but film is also a more viable and accessible option for the occasional project than most people realize... and as more people use it, it will be more likely to stay alive and well. Using film re-adjusted the way that I shoot digitally as well.

  16. I guess they were preproduction models only. When AR, PB or JB, so some reputable videographers, report their results and opinion, then I'd say we can start talking about reality and not hyperboles. I used to have the EOS R, and the gigantic 1.8x 4K crop totally killed it, I simply wasn't able to get myself used to the practice that my excellent 16-35f4L wide lens is just a paperweight for 4K video. The first version of the video AF on the EOS R was really disappointing vs what Sony had at that time even in A7III let alone A9. Today the EOS R's video AF is quite OK, even to my high expectations, too. So, I'll wait and see, if this just rumor-announced EOS R5 is really up to the hype and fanfare. I agree with the commenters that a year ago Canon wasn't even able to make non-cropping 4K, had zero experience in sensor stabilization, and suddenly they are releasing a camera that simply jumps over, leapfrogs evolutionary steps, from "stone age to rocket era" with one jump. We'll see, in a couple of months I guess.

  19. Canon have been working on 8K for a long ass time. In fact they first presented their prototype at Canon Expo in 2015: Canon Expo 2015: 8K Cinema EOS technology demo camera recording to four external recorders Some footage even appeared last year: ..and here is the official page of the mammoth housed in what most thought might be the C300 mk3: https://www.canon-europe.com/photokina/8k-camera/ "Capture exceptional detail with our first 8K camera in a Cinema EOS system." Now what is sort of mind-boggling to me is that they are finally introducing this tech in a consumer camera first! 🤯

I still prefer to shoot with the X-H1 😂 Hopefully X-T4 will be an X-H2 down to the millimetre and even the exact curvature of the nice deep grip.

  21. Canon making their own sensors is a big advantage on the others who tip-toe around with half a foot in the door of the design process and 100% of the manufacturing contracted out to Sony who have a virtual monopoly. Fuji, Nikon and Panasonic all have their own designs, Panasonic even has the organic sensor tech with TowerJazz and there are other manufacturers like Samsung capable of matching or exceeding Sony's capabilities, but I think it's an insane risk to have CMOS sensors from one supplier (Sony) in nearly ALL the current mirrorless models! Canon took a while to bring their new manufacturing plants in Taiwan online but now it appears to have paid off. Sony will have to go lower on price with the A7S III or do something surprising like the FS5 e-ND.

  22. Truly the lightweight camp with me as well, I never want to pick up an Alexa, it's a camera for a crew on a set. It isn't for documentary or one-one man auteur projects. Going down in size to something like a C200 isn't even my cup of tea. I want a picture in the palm of my hand, nimble as the human eye, with minimal controls and no clutter to distract from the art of filmmaking. More and more filmmakers even on Hollywood projects are attracted to this style of shooting for the B-cam and alternative angles.... I find it personally liberating for my kind of style. If only the Blackmagic Pocket 6K was fully integrated with the brighter screen and EVF. Just the brighter screen would have cost $20 more in manufacturing costs per unit perhaps, thus covered by a $40 increase in the price of each unit. $40 to see the screen in direct sunlight. Deal? Come on Blackmagic... Do this concept justice. Amazing price, amazing image, amazing UI but lazy execution as a whole.

  25. Having worked with MFT for years, I can honestly say there is no need to have complicated setups and workarounds for MFTs. What on earth were you asking of MFTs to make such a statement? I have 12mm 1.4 primes for wide angle and pleasing shallow depth of field. Speed boosters aren't that complicated and whilst yes, it's not fullframe, MFT has it's own advantages too. Smaller camera bodies and lenses. More adaptable to a wider range of lenses. Less rolling shutter. Smaller sensors than fullframe certainly have their uses. A lot of cinema cameras use S35 not fullframe, like the C200 and C300. They seem to get by quite easily. Personally I prefer S35 over MFT. I find it a good compromise between MFT and fullframe, each sensor having their own disadvantages. However I've never struggled with MFTs and with a variety of lenses, seem to be able to cope very well with a variety of locations and tight spots and still get a good angle and bokeh.

How was the X-H1 a "disappointment"?? I remember many on here being excited about it, as it was Fuji's best camera at the time! Is only in context of history as we look back with the X-T3 does the X-H1 seem a little "disappointing" This. THIS! Exactly this. X-T4 doesn't need 4K. Just add IBIS, plus further refinements (such as a full size HDMI, and my personal pet hobby horse... TC I/O!!).

  28. If you read this statement glass half full sounds like 8K RAW is likely (may or may not be limited), with Canon's imagined use case is either an amazing burst mode of 20+ fps and a Olympus/Panasonic mode thats always taking photos and lets you select the best one after the fact. Or down sampling to 4k 4:4:4. Also Sony isn't exactly pulling a Canon. From a resources management standpoint it doesn't make that much sense to spend money on their imaging department when they make so much money from their sensor department and supply everyone elses sensors anyways (except Canon). UNlike Canon who stagnated because of overconfidence and cockiness, and probably the sweet bonuses that the executives could write themselves from money saved on R&D (or lack thereof). Although I hink the trigger for Sony to step up will be the same as Canon's, declining sales of their cameras and lenses as a whole. At that point its too much money lost to ignore.

  29. I'm happy with the lowlight performance of MFT with regards to the GH5S. Gives us a GH6 with a dual gain sensor thats performs a bit better and it will be good as a A7III or A7SII....and no one complained about their performance. I've shot candle lit scenes in a cabin in Norway with a f2.8 12-35 at ISO 6400 to 8000 on the GH5S. A few shots at 8000 needed some noise reduction that took about 5 mins of my time to process. I've shot video of Elk with a 50-200mm f/2.8-4 at dusk on the GH5S at 200mm f/4 ISO 3200-6400 with a monopod. Video came out great. I had other photographers and video people there too lugging around 400mm FF and crop lenses...they absolutely HATED to re-position. I wonder why? So I no longer fret about lowlight ability with the GH5S. IF the GH6 can take what they did with the GH5S and improve upon it, I am more than happy. Especially if I get glorious IBIS and full V-Log. I have never yet needed to shoot something wider than 18mm and faster than f1.7. When I do I guess I'll buy one of the new Laowa f0.95 ZeroD primes that are coming out this year. I prefer to have my humans subject's eyes and ears in-focus in my talking head shots. If you shoot f1.2 FF like Tony...well god help you.

  30. Not if the Full Frame is significantly bigger! M43 is about smaller bodies and lenses, not just cost. I can carry 3 bodies and 3 zoom lenses in a backpack and it will be nearly equal in weight to one full frame camera and zoom lens. I mean the GH5 with 35-100 lens combined weighs less than the popular 70-200 f/2.8 full frame lenses alone!

  31. Preordered S20 Ultra, should be enough as travel cam/daily cam for me and nice 8K B cam to R5. The DoF should be similar to APS-C on F4 for the wide angle, quite a bit nicer than F6.3 on normal smart phones. Xiaomi Note 10 Pro is much cheaper for the price but there is something iffy about their software and UI in general and of course the security.

  32. The whole trend around 8k seems very superficial imho. More cpu, more hard drive and we have yet to get 10 bit internal on any ff camera... this direction seems guided by economic interest (Olympic games, 8k TVs) more than content creators. Most people can’t even tell the difference between FHD and 4K. We need better codecs / color bit depth, maybe more options in terms of frame rates and vitrâtes. Not more useless resolution only to boast about on forums and forcing us to buy new computers.

  33. I've never felt limited by M43 when it comes to most of those things, outside of low light. M43 showed though that it can have respectable low light with the GH5S and Pocket 4K. I'm happy with M43.

  34. I'm not trying to pick a fight here. But, I don't know... I felt the same, but after trying out mft... I got to call it as a I see it... Most of the above is mostly B.S. from online pundits. 1) <-- Very subjective and its content based not related to sensor size. 2) <-- Well, watch this video and tell me that 3 feet is really a big deal (may be switch out the lens for the 16-35mm): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFH6bmesqVE 3) <-- Plenty of bokeh on mft here (by the way thats my video with the stupid Yi Camera): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv0QRR3Nbh8 4) <-- This I agree with - but manipulating light with reflectors, external soft boxes, LEDS, flags, etc. even time of day (the golden hours) and working within their limitations is half the fun. 5) <-- This matters if you are not using any editing tools at all, but I've taken some amazing pictures with the 7D. And, they looked great straight out of camera. Funny story, I was working with a friend for a wedding, I told him... man its just a 7D + a couple of L lenses, he said that it will be fine. He was shooting with a 5D mark 2, and the groom wanted all my pictures instead. After reviewing my photos, my friend was blown away by them too, mostly because I captured a lot of those "intimate" moments.

  37. BRAW is an open source codec! What does this mean? Can it be used in other cameras without paying any money to Blackmagic? If so why no one still paying any attention to it? Why Prores why not BRAW?

  38. Bigger, better, brighter screens. 3" lcd camera screens seem pitiful now that we have 6" oled phone screens that go everywhere with us. Like Andrew said in his article on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K: "Now here’s a screen we should have seen on the GH-series of cameras for a LONG time:"

  39. Of course, everybody has different priorities. But I specifically stated the A7 III was remarkable at the time for how complete the feature set was - including price. The A7 III was successful for one innovation only: comprehensive features. Every camera will have its fans who prioritize or fetishize a feature. But the most successful will have the complete shooting package, because that's what the general market is looking for: utility. The R5, 8K marketing gimmick aside, will live or die on the same.

  40. The problem is that Canon, like all big camera manufacturers, uses an ASIC architecture for the camera electronics and signal processing: single-purpose boards where most functions are hard-wired, allowing smaller bodies, less cooling and lower manufacturing costs in high volumes. To implement ProRes, Canon would need to develop a new ASIC from scratch, which is expensive, and is only done every couple of camera generations, with one ASIC for all current Canon SLR and mirrorless cameras. Blackmagic, Arri and RED and other smaller manufacturers use FPGA instead of ASIC: fully programmable boards (or mini computers) where new codecs and functions can be implemented in software. While FPGAs are more flexible and cheaper to develop initially, they are larger, require more cooling andbigger camera housings, and are more expensive to manufacture per piece than ASICs. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K and 6K cameras are good examples for those advantages and disadvantages of the FPGA architecture. The Sigma fp is a good example for the advantages of ASIC (smaller body with a full frame sensor), but also for the disadvantages (lots of limitations that likely can't be fixed in firmware).

  41. "EOSHD" all capitals. They are not more inventive. They just understand the appeal to filmmakers, enthusiasts and videographers, of the phrase "Cinema Camera" and the codec options "ProRes and RAW", for cheap. Things that so far completely allude the Japanese!

  42. Well I just got an URSA mini 4.6k, kind of an impulse buy but I don't think I'll regret it. Just watched a video comparing it to a C300 MK2. It sucked at high iso but the dynamic range killed the C300 and that was just shooting with Prores 422

@Anaconda_ didn't you recently buy a Canon zoom? If so, the Canon 85mm 1.8 may match better. I briefly had the lens and it is really nice, especially for the money. I ended up selling it because I don't use the focal length that often. Here's a shot from my film with it to give you an idea... With that said, I've heard great things about the EX Sigma as well. Their 50mm from that line is supposed to be excellent as well, so you could build an inexpensive f/1.4 set eventually. I believe they also have a 20mm, 24mm and 28mm at f/1.8.
