Had a bit of a play with the X-T3 over the weekend. Below is some footage from my first shoot with the camera. I also have some scenes shot with the Panasonic GH5S. Both are great video tools. Check it out below. Comments welcomed.6 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

I really wish I had the time! I'll see what I can do. I had a quick play today, literally for all of ten minutes..... - Sensor Calibration option in menu is greyed out. I'm used to doing a calibration at the beginning of each days shoot on the UMP but doesn't look like it's necessary on the Pocket4K - I really wish the screen articulated up slightly. Handholding the camera at chest height is most comfortable but it's not the ideal viewing angle for the screen. I would have payed a few hundred $$$ more for the screen to articulate up 30 degrees or so. Would make the camera so much more ergonomic. - Camera feels great in the hand. Well balanced and a good size. - hot air blows out from the bottom vent, not too much of an issue but my left wrist rests partially on the vent while pulling focus. - I have the Speedbooster XL on it and there is absolutely no autofocus info going to or from the lens. I never use AF and didn't think it would be usable at all during a shot but even push AF not working at all with SB XL and Canon 24-105, Sigma 18-35 (Slight vignette at wide end) and Canon 50 1.8 or Canon 85 1.8. All other lens functions work well and iris response from cameras front scroll wheel very responsive. - Did a quick recording on a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s SDCard. 4K25p RAW 4:1 and camera recorded fine for 3-4 minutes before I stopped it. Had a quick look at the Fim, Extended and Video modes just looking at the rear LCD. The difference between Video and Extended video seems to be mainly in the highlights. Blacks look the same and nicely contrasty but the Extended mode holds the highlight better. So far so good. Really happy with the camera. Sorry, thats all I've got for now. Might get some time for another play tomorrow. Let me know if you want any specific shots done and I'll see how I go but can't promise anything at the moment.....6 points -

This will be a short part 1, as I am about to get on my way from Berlin to Cologne to see all the new stuff at Photokina for myself! It's been a mammoth few weeks for camera announcements and these two top them all. First from Panasonic we have the first ever full frame cameras to shoot 4K/60p, beating Sony to the punch. Their A7S III is STILL not yet announced. The Panasonic S1 and S1R are probably why! For video they beat every full frame camera past, present and future! Second we have the Fujifilm GFX 100MP development announcement, which will be a 2019 $10,000 medium format mirrorless camera. They also have a cheaper 50R "rangefinder" style GFX body at the show ($4500) but that is 1080p only like the GFX 50S it's based on. It is the 100 megapixel one I am really interested in. Read the full article3 points

No articulating screen? PASS! Specs are meaningless if the body isn't practical. I've had enough of dicking around with "solutions" that just add complexity. If I can't flip the screen around the camera is useless. I do over a million views a month on Youtube and need to get shit done. www.youtube.com/spectresoundstudios3 points

Andrew...See if you can find out why they have gone to a triaxial moveable screen and not a full articulating screen. This seems really bizarre. Seems others like Fuji who had the fully articulating screen went to some flippy thing too. WHY? Is it acting as some form of heat sync or something? I really like the fully articulating screens but can't understand why all new cameras don't come with this feature, especially when older models had this feature. Very frustrating.3 points

Safe to say that the X-T3, like so many other cameras these days, is very capable of shooting narrative stuff.3 points -
You might want to consider using a viewfinder app for your phone like the Cadrage one. It simulates the FOV you will get from all different formats and lenses so you can quickly get a preview of what you are going to get before you set all your real gear up. It works with the common wide angle adapters on the phone as well to simulate much wider lenses. It might be useful in your situation as well @kye as I know you like to keep stealthy so would delay the moment at which you get your real camera out of the bag in the situation you described above https://www.cadrage.at3 points

I filmed this over 5 weeks in Colombia on a personal trip. I brought along minimal gear... well as minimal as I could Let me know if you have any questions and if you are thinking about visiting Colombia I would highly recommend it!3 points

Funny you should say that because are actually being taken to Photokina on Thursday afternoon and can be evaluated at the official EOSHD press event. Well, when I say official press event, I actually mean wherever on the show floor I end up bumping into @Andrew Reid2 points

Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
Rinad Amir and one other reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
Would've preferred the traditional flippy screen but it's not enough of a big deal that it'd stop me from buying it. I don't see a reason though, really, to upgrade from my GH5 in the near future.2 points -
I am sure many would be intrested to know something about the audio quality recorded with camera's internal mics. I have understood it should be quite good for internal mics. Does it capture camera's fan noise, or how about the noice floor, is there much hiss in sound? I haven't heard any sound recorded with this camera yet.2 points

What the fuck is that hinge? Why did they copy that stupid design from Fuji instead of the great, well tasted, field proven, vloggers loven (is that a word) GH5 style screen? It instantly went from my must buy to probably skip.2 points -
There's no doubt. At this point I must admit that I am the weakest link. I will do some more test vs the GH5S. I still love the output from the S. But the Fuji brings a certain magic. I think it's something the Panasonic may lack. Granted I shot the GH5S using the 12-35mm f2.8 II, which imo is more clinical than magical. Fuji on the other hand, has many great lenses that ooze mojo. The Leica 42.5mm f1.2 can match the Fuji but that is only a single lens.2 points

Jesus, what a bunch of whiny baby some of you are! It's a camera announcement six months before release, and you're crying, complaining, and passing judgement because they didn't give you all the specs in intimate detail. They probably don't even know what the full specs are yet, as a lot of development will happen over the next 6 months! every time a new cameras is released, I'm reminded of why I can't stand most artistic types, you all seem to be perpetually malcontent!2 points -
No problem, I don’t mind off topic discussions. The information that can be gathered from impromptu questions are often invaluable. Thanks for this! That app looks great. You are probably the most helpful member on this site!!!2 points

This announcement does not excite me. We do not even know if they will capture 8 or 10 bit. No mention of improvement to AF. No sample images or footage. Maybe it will be great... there’s just too little to go on.2 points

I'm sure folks have posted this new short film shot with the Fujifilm X-T3, but here it is anyway. This film is beautiful, and I think Andrew is right about it being a Samsung sensor. Footage from this camera is nothing like previous Fujifilm cameras. It really has a Samsung NX1 feel about it. And I shot hundreds of hours of footage with an NX1 and sold it about 2 weeks ago. I loved my NX1, and it was great for many years, but the macro blocking finally made me sell it. This new improved sensor looks like a major evolutionary step. Samsung must have had some help with the processor too. Only a few companies and Samsung is one of them, has the technology for so much horsepower from a tiny chip. Also, these images do not look like Sony sensor, in my opinion. Check out old NX1 videos and you will see the similarities. Anyway, enjoy.2 points

Cool. @OliKMIA are you able to use the LUT they uploaded in their "download" page for the Mavic 2 Pro ? With color final on FCPX, it says the lut file has an error.1 point

Here is some unedited footage you guys can play with. I'll be curious how you grade it. On an interesting side note discounting the wind noise, the audio in the clip is quite good and the mics are stereo. I think in a quite environment you might be able to get away with in-camera audio. I did not expect that. Honestly, I usually just mic my subject if they are speaking, but in a pinch these built in mics might work.1 point

Maybe, maybe not. The Panasonic cameras are really just announcements of things to come next year. Sony may still surprise with an A7siii that slips in BEFORE the Panasonic cameras are actually released (if the Sony is coming at all that is)! The issue for me with the Panasonic cameras is that unless you are a shareholder in Panasonic, these new cameras will be as alien to M43 users as Canon, Sony or Nikon (actually for Canon even more so since Canon EF lenses can be adapted with near native AF at least for AFS). Think about it, a set of M43 lenses will not work on these new cameras and I doubt the Leica L mount lenses will work anytime soon on a GH5 or other M43 camera so you would need two sets of lenses if going with Pana FF and M43 but with Canon EF lenses you can go FF AND M43 (and Sony E can too and more). These Pana/Leica/Sigma cameras will want to be light years better than anything else to be successful since for all but a very small number of people it means an entirely new and expensive system aimed at pros and high end users and a VERY expensive switch. IF Sony puts out a A7siii, it will be usable along with all the other Sony stuff right form release so unless they stuff it up big time, I would think it is going to be good (again, assuming it does actually arrive). Choice is good and getting better but it is coming to the point there will be too MUCH choice for them all to survive.1 point

Seeking Info About the B&H Projection Lens
Bold reacted to livetheshot for a topic
Thanks for clarifying. It's reassuring to hear that I didn't end up with a dud. It was pretty easy taking apart the front element. Screws weren't seized or anything like that. Hardest part was looking for the appropriate tools to get them off. Gave the glass a good clean with hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, rinsed it off then polished it off with isopropryl alcohol and it was good as new. It gave me a good chance to check out how the thing was built and put together. I can see why you persevered with this @Bold . I'm loving the simplicity of the design! Just waiting on the series VII to 58mm adaptor to arrive. I might still go with a clamp as I'm not that assured with the smallrig lense support and rig system. The adaptor feels like it'd be a weak link in the chain from taking lense to the B&H.1 point -
@A_Urquhart good info, thanks. As this is a camera that is really likely to shine brightest with raw and careful grading, perhaps just sharing your impressions of it is easiest and quickest. Or alternatively just take a bunch of random shots and upload some DNGs or TIFFs for others to dl and play with?1 point

605 grams for the drone with props on. 295 grams for the battery. So 900 grams total on my weight scale.1 point

Personally, I like to have the two variants so we can choose what we want based on specs and price. I think that the 30mpx of the 5D4 and R are kind of jack of all trade master of none. They fit in between, not especially good in low light nor producing very high definition files. I expect the new Panasonic S camera to push the envelop without all the Sony issues, the Nikon Z will be good while the Canon R won't bring anything special. Sure the Canon R will be a decent camera but I don't see any incentive to switch from my current canon DSLR.1 point

DJI Mavic Pro II

Worst bullish I have seen in a long time. I liked this guy videos, but now I will be more carefull. T - First of all, the sharpness on the MP2 should be turned to +1 because they have turned down the digital sharpness compared to previous drone. - Secondly, the guy uses AF which is known to suck. Just go MF and click on infinity symbol and all your footages will look sharp and no focus issue. Someone tells him? - Third and MOST important: the diffraction on the MP2 is enormous past F5.6. Best sharpness is achieved at 2.8, and best corner sharpness at F/4. Sweet overall spot is F/4. Shoot in either manual either aperture priority and always between 2.8 and F4. I am sure the aperture was higher in his shot. Do the 3 steps above, re-compare, and the guy will order again the Mavic. When you put out videos like this for the world and you are popular you should do the work properly. Picture from the Pro 2 from this weekend. Shot in JPG.1 point -
Actually Cine 4 has a very nice highlight roll-off. But it uses 0-255 data level, and even Davinci Resolve cant recognize this in Auto mode, you have to switch it manually. So technically you have worked with Cine 4 like you throwed away the darkest 0.5 stop and the top 1-1.5 stop DR. (where the roll-off is actually happening :D) Exposing for Cine 4 properly means 50-60 IRE luminance level for the skin tones, and not 0EV AE Actually exposure does not really affect skin tones if it's above the noise level, which is around 40 IRE (ok, this statement is true mostly when recording in 10 bit) Mark Romero 2 "Well... according to the sony help guide scroll to the bottom of here: http://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1420/v1/en/contents/TP0000435736.html ), that seems to be what they are saying: "Setting [ITU709(800%)] or [S-Log2] may cause an error in the white balance custom setup. In that case, set the exposure bright first and then perform custom setup." Although it is hard for me to interpret that..." Slog2 is designed to use with S-Gamut. S-Gamut has to be mapped to REC709 Gamut properly (which is not happening usually because the lack of knowledge, this is the reason why everyone is crying about how hard is to grade sony footage) and only 3200K and 5600K correction LUT's are existing right now. So if you are recording for example in 4300K, the mapped colors will be off. I know everyone is using SLOG2 with S-gamut3.cine, but without gamut mapping the skin tones will not have enough thickness. Now back to topic: every LOG footage has it's proper exposure levels for skin and 90% reflectance white, and every gamut has to be remapped to REC709 (or wider) colorspace in the grading process.1 point

I've noticed a few times this happening already, announcing but without prices. I'll deliberately mess with this plan then ? I HOPE IT IS UNDER THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS!! AS I WOULD NEVER EVER PAY MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A LENS LIKE THIS IS WHICH IS SLOWER THAN T2.8 AND ISN'T WIDER THAN 24mm!!!!1 point
-
If you're paying your crew less than a hundred bucks a day each then it is an exaggeration to call it a micro budget film, either just flat out call it a "no budget film" or an ultra micro budget film1 point
-
Just because you said something positive about me I did it ; It's 0.85KG on the scale . @Emanuel BTW no one speaks about this on the web but did you notice ??? Price rise on DJI.com, in US and also Europe. 50$ more for the drone, 60$ more the fly more pack, ND filters, batteries, everything is more expensive. I thought about Trump taxes at first but since the rise also happens in EUR I do not know... Anyway happy I got it for the previous price. Very surprising still.1 point

Watch these in anything but Firefox (otherwise I love that browser). Ideally, watch in chrome with the RGB dev fix 'The Lane' is great: This one is V1: The interview portion: V1 Era: (While these often reflect earlier versions, and non-standard use in some cases, they stick out in my mind as having some really neat shots. 'Always Already' is the reference example, with Firecrest NDs for Day, and ensured correct post workflow)1 point

Show Us Your Best Video

This is the statement everyone of us should print out and paste on our bedroom ceiling to go to sleep to and wake up to every day. If you're run-and-gun listen to the following tentatively, or not at all. The best looking films curate the living joy out of every scene. Nothing is left to chance or served up the "we'll fix it in post" line. That's lazy. Great, critically acclaimed images take considerable work, even with a full crew. The mentality of getting the shot as quickly as possible, as in checking off a shot list only serves business objectives, not creativity. If you care about your storytelling, care about and get passionate and intelligent with the tools you use to tell it. Get your hands dirty. Don't rely on your camera or editor. Scrutinize what every element in your scene is speaking to your audience. It all matters. You get out what you put in.1 point
