Hi All, first post here so hello. When self shooting i use the LS300 with an Atomos Shogun and Samyang primes. As mentioned without the Shogun and its focus peaking you would need an external monitor or an EVF. However, despite this drawback the image quality (in my opinion) is great. This was all shot with the JVC apart from 2 clips. cheers8 points

10 years on, Panasonic should really be leading things out front. I don't know whether it is down to a smaller budget, or Panasonic upper-management not allowing total freedom, but it's sad that Sony and Nikon are out front when Panasonic were the ones to pioneer the entire market, at a time others were too scared to make the jump. If anything dude, you are the one turning into a fanboy.3 points -

Yeah, it's crazy that we now have to put our hopes on a LX10/15 successor, which they might actually try to appeal the vlogger crowd with... but with the decisions they've been making lately... I'm not sure. This LX100II is a bit of a joke. A lot of people were disappointed about the GX9. We haven't seen a true G80/85 successor. They've split up the flagships into 3 different models, each lacking certain things so if you want two of those, you'll be ending up with two cameras. Price has gone up significantly. Things have gotten downhill a bit after the G80/85 on the customer end of things and value wise. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a change of management at that time. But I'm hoping they can get their shit together, because this will drive and keep people away. They were all about giving you value and listening to the customer. And the flagships still do great things, don't get me wrong, but I feel their strategy is changing and I'm not loving it.2 points
-
Honestly the biggest disappointment for me is the lack of 3D tracking in photo, it's there but takes much longer than their DSLR's to use. Battery also seems like a gigantic issue again. Buffer is also way to small I honestly have no idea why they would leave out dual card slots, they HAD to have seen the blowback Sony saw with that for years and that they would be directly compared to the A7III.2 points

Its amusing to see people call any ILC that has no mirror in front of sensor, a Sony clone! Leave Nikon aside for a moment, most of the new tech or ideas introduced in this industry in recent years, didn't come from Sony. PDAF wasn't Sony invention, they licensed it. and Canon delivered a better version. IBIS was also a licensed tech, and Olympus created a much better iteration of it. EVF wasn't new thing, and Leica was the one who showed how the next generation of it should be. in optics, m4/3 members were true pioneers, and for large sensor glass, it was Sigma who made the bold actions. In video, most of what we now consider as must-have features, determined by Panasonic. In color science, and also the joy of photography, Fuji was the real hero. Sony is good in two segments: making sensors, and marketing. Both unrelated to its imaging unit.2 points -

IS it just me or the new new Nikon z cameras are oddly close enough in features to Samsung NX1? there was a rumour back in the day regarding Nikon had bought Samsung tech when they decided to exit the camera market, remember that? Now look at the similarities between cameras feature ( of course apart of the sensor size): - codec bitrate, almost the same as nx1 after hack - rezolution and fps both in 4k and 1080p - just keep in mind z cameras launching 5 years later than nx1 :))))) - even the lenses are having the same design and front size 72mm. Even the neame is the same "S" line and there are more feature to look into but i don't wanna sound paranoic. maybe is just me though! what do you think? it's a shame that the 10bits are just external and there is no 60p in 4k. That would have been the perfect combo. I am still struggling to upgrade my 5 years old Nx1, apart of the sensor size.2 points -

At $1999 i find the Z6 extremely compelling.. however at $3400 i find they could have added at the very least an extra card slot to the Z7. Something tells me an Z8/9 will probably be the 'pro' models in a year or two time. As annoying as it is, they've clearly left some parts out like mode dial, AF switch, lock image, dual card slots etc to segment their DSLRs from MILCs. Nikon may not have a cine cam line to protect but they do have a DSLR one.. As to comparison with Sony A7 line.. well the weather sealing, LCD/EVF resolution, top OLED display, 2 front function buttons, dedicated iso button, grip, touchscreen menus, right-hand menu button etc.. do set it apart ergonomically and build wise. Add to that 10-bit 4:2:2 out, Nikon color science & potentially superior IBIS and it's a slam-dunk to me. Canon are going to have to go all out if they plan on taking lead now..2 points -
Obviously it is, given they both have nearly identical form factors. Is that really so hard to understand? So instead of being patronising, how about point out specific examples? That shouldn't be too hard given how well understood the advantages are by everyone.2 points

Only one XQD card slot? But that's not acceptable for any serious pro, is it? Only one slot means some Z6/Z7 owners most definitely will lose everything, which is unacceptable if you're doing a paid job. Dual card slots is a requirement! The lack of flippy display means the device is quite unusable for people creating content themselves without a dedicated cameraman at all times to check the framing, focus and etc. Filming yourself or conducting interviews is hopeless unless you add a bulky external display. What a shame. Does it have a 30min video record limit? I certainly hope not! And I want 4K 60p so I am not buying Z6, sorry. I wish these new high performance encoders had H265 codec as an option too to be able to record to a lower bitrate keeping the same quality, easier for YouTube 4K uploading for people (like me) who don't need/want to do post production rendering and the like.1 point -
Ah-ha... I found Nikon's handy compatibility chart. https://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/accessory/camera/ftz/spec.htm Yes No Maybe. I was presuming that you were referring to D lenses without an in built motor but there are D Type lenses that do (those with the AF-S designation before them) For example AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED and AF Zoom-Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D IF-ED are both D type lenses but the former has an in built motor so will work with the adapter and the later doesn't so won't. The best way to check is for a specific lens is to got to Nikon's exhaustive lens/body compatibility page here and download the excel sheet. https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?lang=en_GB&articleNo=000005532 Then go to the tab of a Nikon body without an AF motor in it (like the D40 for example) and check it against that.1 point

100% right on. Sony make a good all-rounder that borrows from everything else and maximises the specs on paper, with the largest possible sensor. Their sensor tech is excellent. Innovation wise, there are others who pioneer better stuff, earlier on... but don't manage to put it in such a well rounded 'greatest hits' package, because they don't have Sony's R&D budget.1 point -

Actually two 11 bit values turns into a 22 bit value, which is then processed as 16bit lin internally, not 14bit. It’s then log encoded as a 12bit once it’s encoded into a DNG or ProRes. Alexa is the same, but two 12bit values turned into a 24bit value then down to 16bit. I’ve long felt bit depth is the most important part of the digital imaging chain, not resolution. JB1 point -

Arrgghh... Not having internal Egg Nog available is really a turnoff since I would be using on a one-hand gimbal. Hoping the Flat profile will be close to SLOG at least. Glad to hear about that. In the real world - for me, at least - my Sony a6300 and a6500 batteries lasted significantly longer than the batteries in my D750, since I shoot with LiveView / LCD 97% of the time. I could take about 450 stills with my D750 while I was up around close to 550 with my Sony bodies.1 point -
Do you photograph for huge fine art prints? Do you shoot sports in low light? If the answers are "no" then any current camera will do. Unless you permanently shoot at ISO 6400 or need FullFrame f/1.4 shallow DoF, I don't see how the GH5 could hold you back. It's clearly a more pleasant experience than shooting my A6300 was. And the 5D III isn't exactly amazing for post-processing either.1 point

Well, there is no mic jack, yet again! So that pretty much automatically kills it as a consideration for a lot of increasingly frustrated people, including myself. I just want a better than cellphone camera that is nice and compact, but with a mic input so I can do quick and dirty vlog! None of the Sony RX100 have this, was a perfect chance for Panasonic to leap in and steal a niche for themselves! Especially if its screen had also flipped out.1 point

Yup, Nikon waited a long time for this, they're not going to want to screw it up. For everyone on EOSHD we should be glad that Nikon gave 10bit external and didn't cap it at max 8bit in any form like Sony. That doesn't sound like a "Sony clone" to me. Nailed it.1 point

I used to own the d750 and still haven’t found a nicer more organic image than it produced in 1080p. And the motion and colors were lovely. It was just a tad too soft, and the lack of ibis, the 15 minutes internal record limit and the sheer size of it made it too cumbersome and unpractical. The poor battery life of the Z-series and the single card slot are huge drawbacks with regards to usability. But if the image is nice enough I will still be tempted, even though it seems to be an A7rii with Nikon color science.1 point -
More gaskets I guess most people usually think is better, so give them that one. The EVF is a Sony EVF, made by Sony, used in the Sonys. Don't see how that makes the Nikon better? What's the magnification of the Nikon? I'm sure Nikon fanboys will write a love letter about how Nikon are really the design masterminds behind them, but realistically they are Sony, just like the sensor. Sony has two top custom buttons which I would argue are more useful. I almost never use the front buttons on any camera I've owned with them. Sony has dedicated ISO wheel. Sony wins. They look the same. Unless you're talking about the bell end bit, which is bigger but hardly constitutes a bigger / better grip (considering you don't actually hold onto that bit). My Canons have these and are almost exclusively useless. Pretty sure any button can be a menus button on the Sony. Is a right-hand menu button more ergonomically correct than a right-hand play button? Not so sure. Seems like a swap the is more or less for the sake of it. I still don't see the main difference ergonomically. Or even any meaningful advantage. Build wise maybe, haven't held it in my hand. I've never felt the Nikons in general to be anything to write home about build wise, I actually think they feel quite cheap. Chunky. Many people seem to like that and equate it to 'good'. Again I am sure a bunch of fanboys will explain how non-toy like the Nikon automatically is... because Nikon. Ugh! Another throw away phrase that is overused and misunderstood. Nikon have ZERO experience Log or even REC.709 etc. Pleasing (to some) Nikon colours is what it should be credited for at best. I bought a 5D IV knowing full well this was coming. It's release has had zero impact. According to DPR: "Up to 100Mbps H.264 8-bit internal video capture"1 point

Another thought if you decide to go the M43 route...Don't overlook the G9. I find the autofocus and IBIS better than the GH5. Yes, you give up VLOG-L but it has excellent color science and it still has 60p 4k. CineD ain't bad as an alternative to VLOG-L. You also have to like the lens selection with M43 compared to Fuji. With this said, I still struggle whether to hang on to M43 or go completely Sony. (Have the A7III at present.) I'm waiting to see the BlackMagic 4k Pocket as well as the A7SIII. If you can rent the bodies first, you might be better off. Ergonomics and ease-of-use should be taken into consideration too. But...it's hard to stay away from full-frame bodies. The 5D Mark III is still a great camera. Had one a few years ago.1 point

GH5 for Photography?
mercer reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
The GH5 has an ETC mode which will allow you to use your c-mount lenses without vignetting. Lemme use one of the c-mount lenses I have left over from my BMPCC days tomorrow to check. I think mine is 12.5mm too! A Computar one! I use the Viltrox focal reducer with the Sigma 18-35. What a wonderful combo! The Metabones was just too pricey for me, I've been very happy with the Viltrox. Pixco has released a dummy focal reducer too that's $99, if you're not concerned but your lenses communicating with the camera. I got the G85 for $600, which included two cheap Olympus lenses that I sold for about $275 total, so the G85 ended up being $325. So if you can find a deal on it you probably won't regret it. Still though, I love my GH5!1 point -
