  1. GX85 has nice colors for sure. Shot this footage with contrast and saturation at 0, -3sharp, -5noise, in 1080p with automatic shutter and -1/3stop , oh, and accidentally with ISO 1250

  2. You have to take what he says with a grain of salt... he is so anti-canon, he will pretty much believe or promote anything that puts Canon in a bad light. Without confirmation from Canon, there is probably no way to know for sure, at this point, if Canon's brand new processor is capable of 10bit or not.

  3. Wow, GH5 so bad. You can see the auto focus pumping all the time in the video of the moon. Are they using face detection? Just kidding

  5. I use NX cameras for recording live performances, for a couple of years now, I hope my "luck" won't stop any time soon. I am looking right now at a live performance we did a few days ago, and I have a 60 and 50minutes files (and a few smaller ones). I usually have 4-5 files on 3 hours performances, and I cut just to be sure (for people not familiar with NX1/NX500 there is a 73min limit, and NX300 unlimited). Today I had a meeting about a shooting we have in the weekend. There was a friend with an a6300, he also has the A7Sii, and last year we had a heated (no pun indented) conversation about how the small Sony could cope with the hot Mediterranean conditions that we have for 6-8 months per year. Last year he defended the camera, but today he told me that he wants to throw it away. The camera is shutting down, AFTER the firmware update, and in 1080p, he lost something critical once ( I do not know the details, and I wouldn't like to be the "I told you so" guy), and now he is trying not to use it that much, or at all. He also mentioned batteries and ergonomics. Now it is 3 out of 3 from people I know . From my perspective, this camera has overheating issues. The way Fuji faced this issue for this similar sensor, is more straightforward and honest in my opinion. And Panasonic made a huge m43 camera (while small size was a huge advantage of the system until now) to overcome heat issues (it is well documented in many interviews). Sony just changed the threshold of the sensor..

  6. Believe me, I know. I'm working on a few Netflix series now and YouTube and Hulu series, too. (Well, not at this very moment but this year.) Netflix is pickiest about cameras. YouTube will accept 4k Alexa footage and most of their content is shot on 4k-upscaling Alexas. Netflix won't accept Alexa footage so I'm mostly seeing Red and F55 and I think there's some C300 Mk II mixed in, too. My preference would be Alexa but it's their choice to make. But yes, they'll buy rights to anything even if it's in 1080p, even if they later release it as an original. I'm only saying that at the low end of the industry where I work, only Netflix really cares about 4k, and even they will accept 1080p content for their originals (if used sparingly or if a show or movie is produced before they acquire it). I don't think that changes too much until you're working on tentpoles. The features I work on are all 2k DCP deliverables even if they're shot on 4k. I guess my only point is, if you need 4k, you will know, because your clients will tell you before you roll a frame of footage. So speculating about it is a bit foolish. Whoever needs it knows they need it from the get go.

  7. Our A7S II just overheated and shut down when filming a live event (tripod and AC power), after recording continuously for ~1.5 hrs (sub 30 min segments). Ambient temp was around 74F. A C100/C200/C300 or FS5/FS7 (even a GH4/GH5) would have worked better in this situation. From our available cameras, it was the best size, file size, low light and look. Now that I know it overheats it won't get used this way again.

  8. Yesterday, I filmed part of a project with the Sony A7SII in Cine4.cine, which we use every day. I also produced many of the same shots using a new Sony A9 (standard color) that Sony sent us to evaluate (yay for Sony Pro Services). This was done in about 77º weather (f) and both cameras were in direct sun the whole time. No indications of overheating by either camera. You'll note a slight crop in the A9 image as its sensor is slightly smaller than the A7SIIs. Also, out of the box, the A9s skin tones are quite nice though highlight roll-off is pretty harsh given the lack of cinegammas.

  16. that works both ways with Canon fans too....every bit of info Canon has released says it's 8 bit and apparently the delay for the XF-AVC codec is due to the complexity of re-engineering a 10bit codec to play nicely in 8bit. I've got a Canon c100 and was really hoping the c200 would be my next camera - but the kind of mid tier corporate stuff I'm aiming for is asking more and more for 10 bit and 4k. They don't care about great af - I would be foolish to ignore that - the Panasonic is looking more likely for my needs

  18. @Andrew Reid I appreciate your work and engagement for people shooting with DSLR and mirrorless toys. It was you giving me reasons to buy the NX1 over 1,5 years ago. At that time, I was 15 years old. It was your website and many people here always trying to help and sharing their experience and tips when using "toys". Before buying the NX1, I shot with normal (smaller sensor) shoulder cameras only, mainly news and short narratives and documentaries (mostly politics and social). Shooting with S35 was a very new experience for me, as I am a practical minded, content driven guy with no or very little interest for fiction. Since then, I shot hundreds of hours of footage with the NX1...Even the German RTL broadcast television buyed some of my NX1 footage and broadcasted 15 seconds in their main newscast (every evening at 18:45 CET)... Here it is (footage used by RTL), is a image based documentation of a professional nightly blasting of some old cement towers in Germany. Curiously (and given the quite bad low light capabilities of the NX1 in low contrast lighting situations) that was a night video out of the NX1 they bought in this case. Footage in this YT video of my channel is a combination of NX1 and FZ1000...Daylight sequences are FZ1000 ONLY....Run & Gun, no "artistic" work... Here is a video, completely shot with the NX1 - a small visualization of a German beach club: Please consider, I am a "capture the moment" shooter and these videos are over an year old and I gained meanwhile very much experience with a whole bunch of cameras. My personal requirement is capturing decessive moments (interviews, violence, different situations, etc.) and trying to deliver beautiful IQ, good audio, etc. - but the content (information) is my highest requirement. YOU and many people in this forum were a great help for me and the NX1 was at that time a kind of "springboard", inspiration and motivation for my filmic work. Meanwhile I use the NX1 together with my mom's A6500 many for portable street filmography, long exposure and architectural footage. For more challenging and ambitious work I use S35 or FF pro cameras with very good DR and low light capabilities and serious manufacturer and reseller support & service... And still...During the past year I sold a bunch of footage to different news agencies, mostly out of the NX1 (footage from Italy, Romania, etc.)...Considering my age and the fact that I visit a gymnasium (so filming & photographing are a kind of spare time hobby, even when selling photos or footage) and the fact that the NX1 is still considered by many "pros" as a "nice toy", this is not bad at all... You are one of the decissive "NX1 filming pioneers", encouraging people to use it. Thank you again for your great contribution to the "toy filmers" community! DISCLAIMER: Please consider, this is old footage. There are light years of difference to my today's work and personal requirements. Meanwhile I completely stopped generally documenting political day-to-day routine or local events & facilities...

  21. Yeah, that guy did an awesome job with that video. Even my friends and family have looked at a few things I have shot and were surprised I shot it... LOL. Everything looks cinematic with the 5D3... gotta love it. With the short I'm working on now, I have mainly used that 24-70mm f/4 lens entirely handheld and although it's not exactly tripod steady, or as steady as Olympus' IBIS, it's as steady as it would have been with my Nikkor 28mm lens and a monopod. For me that's good enough.

  22. The best optical standard zoom I've used so far is the Olympus Zuiko Top Pro 4/3 14-35mm F2.0 Second would be the 24-90 F2.8-4.0 Leica Vario for the SL. B

  23. Yeah, it works exactly the same and same file for both. EDIT - Sorry, I meant the same html file for both to implement it. It needs two Custom settings on the camera available if you want to switch in camera between Cinelike D and the other profiles. GX80/85 have three available so still one spare for a more photography based or black and white configuration or whatever.

  24. I am guessing one would require the App end and the older firmware on the GH4, to be able to successfully push the Vlog in. Is this the App end? Have there been any firmware updates to the GH4 firmware after that glitch (with the App turning on the VLog shooting? ). Interesting. I will upload some shots from yesterday that I took (I am not sure about the exposure being under or over). I used the Tiffin Ultra Contrast 3 Filter, and the image almost looks like VLog. Though I am guessing it won't be easy to get the colours perfectly right, after this.

  27. yeah, thanks mercer~! im debating right now between your lens and the 24-105 f/4 IS version 1 (although v2 isnt much more expensive...) i would TOTALLY go for a lens with a wider aperture but I want IS for video... decisions, decisions! EDIT: also, @mercer i watched this video at work and my coworker who knows nothing about cameras was walking by and he was like, "What are you doin, watchin a movie? That looks really cinematic" ~ swear to God

  30. That is so generous. Snatch their hand off. The X-T2 is the only thing that comes close to the NX1 even after 2-3 years... I prefer the NX1 over that (have both) in all respects apart from low light and 4K rolling shutter. I am quite comfortable using the NX1 at ISO 3200 as long as I have a good exposure, fast lens, master pedestal +15 and RGB range 16-235, to prevent the blacks from crushing and losing all the shadow detail. Noise at ISO 6400 makes it a bit less usable, so my limit is usually 1600 or 3200. But let's get real One has to balance practicality, usability, cost, all sorts of stuff. To get better low light without sacrificing too many features, your only choice (for 4K) is the A7S II, A7R II and 1D C. So triple the cost of a used NX1. TRIPLE! The X-T2 is more fiddly and crops the sensor in 4K. You'd need to invest in new lenses maybe too? A6500 could be an option but I don't enjoy using mine... ergonomics are shit and rolling shutter the worst I've ever seen. I believe even though reliability has let you down and the freshness of new models entices you, that the trusty NX1 is truly special and should be perceived with unless you can jump to a $3000 Sony and put up with the worse ergonomics.

  31. Agreed...and I was actually just expanding on your point of how rare 4K requirements actually are, but I would not buy a non 4K camera today unless it was a used Alexa classic, a F35 or F900R...the 3 Cine cameras that are positively droolworthy...still I'm reading more and more about clients asking about 4K delivery and this is bound to increase...
    1 point
  32. The only serious issue of NX (and that goes to most modern cameras) is the aggressive noise reduction in higher ISO. Where in your tests are those artefacts you are talking about? Obviously is not Alexa, but "full of artefacts" is a stretch for sure..

  34. The DSLR filmmaker community is funny. It's like "Gimme 8bit proxy, 10bit, RAW, Canon colour science, Log, 4K, IBIS, DPAF and HFR in one package, in A7S form factor, max 2500 bux. I need a silver bullet that covers all cinematography and videography scenarios but make it cheap because I'm not a pro and want to shoot flowers/cat in my garden with it. Also has to shoot on SD cards because Cfast is too expensive". There's no silver bullet for everything in cinematography. Every camera body and ecosystem has its compromises. You can hold out for the perfect dreamworld unicorn camera, or you can pick up one that fits your shooting style and then actually shoot something. Also, the C200 looks awesome and exciting - and daaaymn, official 4K RAW on an affordable Canon frame, without the unreliability of hacking stuff. Had I not sprung for an UM4,6K recently I'd be throwing my money at the Canon.

  36. Man, I suffer in silence when I read some stuff here (I guess I'm masochist to keep reading it). But this one is too much for me... On what ground do you think it should cost 2,500$ ? Please tell me. Do you know a video camera costing that price and doing this ? And don't tell me blackmagic please (fan of the brand, but their cameras aren't in the same price range and they are way less reliable and easy to use, and no autofocus, no support) Do you know a pro 1/3 sensor camcorder costs more than 2500$ (Sony, Canon) ?. It might not be the camera for you, that I totally understand but with all due respect, I think your comment is from a spoiled naive non pro shooter who doesn't know the requirements of pro work and on being on the field with reliable equipment. People always complain, at some point it's just ridiculous. They want new technology right away, but when Sony releases a new camera too soon, they think theirs just became obsolete and hate Sony for it. In the mean time they blame Canon for holding off. And now they unleash something very unexpected from them, still complaints. Same goes for bitrates. Canon files take too much space, now they want that kind of bitrates in their gh5, and they're suddenly ok with the file size. And all that to end up posting videos on Youtube (which is not a bad thing but just all those concerns are irrelevant for that type of delivery). Anyway, this camera seems to be freaking great. Canon used to deliver not on specs but on the field and with the image quality/mojo. Now this one also has the specs ! Granted an intermediate codec is more than necessary for a camera at this price point, but it will come down the line anyway. Pffiou, sorry I had to get it out of my chest Now I can burn in hell !

  37. I assume you want it for the 5D3? I have the Canon 24-70mm f/4 for my 5D3. It has IS and with full frame you can still get some decent shallow depth with it. The IS is amazing on it. I bought it because of this video... According to the creator, that was shot entirely handheld, with only a little warped stabilizer used in a couple shots. I shot this with it wide open... So in full frame you can still get some shallow depth with it.

  38. its pretty hard for me to dislike my Gh5- i mostly use the old 12-35, 35-100 and voigtlander 25. i shoot wide open most of the time with the 12-35 and 35-100. Results are great. High contrast shot- click into vlog, slo mo- one click and your there. need more reach- click on the etc mode. IS is pretty good on native lenses and ok on non native- handheld work is pretty damn good. i shoot a lot of corporates, CEO s , council mayors, finished building projects, health department comms, a few weddings, sports events. But also shoot for love- pick up and play on GH5 is so easy. Downsides- its small so i have to rig it with a mattebox and top handle/ cage for high end corporates to keep the suits happy. battery life is a lot shorter than gh4. all up its an epic offering

  44. i dont know about the sony's but the nikons dynamic range wins over the panasonics. I also dont know why you'd be worried about the "soft" 1080 image. Most people will be watching these vids on their phone. You could probably shoot VGA res and it would look alright.

  45. If you hate using the a6300, what makes you think you'll enjoy the a7s? The D7500 will be released this week, may be the smaller, lighter body with a little cropped 4K will be a better fit for you until the D760 gets released.

If you're after vintage, cheap, big constant aperture zoom range and parfocal then have a look at some B4 stuff. I got this Angenieux for the LS300 as I needed it for the press conference stuff I do but obviously with it now being MFT mount I put it on the GX80 for a laugh! Its 8.7mm f1.7 with a 15x zoom. With the GX80 you have to deploy the internal doubler on the lens to get the image to fill the frame so its then 18mm-ish and f2.8 but the LS300 just laughs at that kind of behaviour and uses its VSM to scale it so you don't need the doubler. And it then makes it a 30x zoom by using its Prime Zoom function as well ! £200 for the lens, £70 for the adapter and about £50 for the battery plate, cable and Sony NP battery to power the servo zoom. It is ever so slightly unbalanced on the GX80 obviously ! I'll put a bit of footage up of it when I get a chance if anyone is interested.

  47. I just had a 3 cam documentary shoot yesterday, here are some frame grabs from the 1080p sequence. Shot in 4K, 8-bit, Standard picture profile, WB 6000K Lens Turbo, Pentax 50mm f1.7, set to f3.5 Lens Turbo, Sigma 18-35mm, set to f2.8 You can see that there is a quality difference between the two lenses. Anyway I am satisfied with the results, no crop in 4K is a lifesaver. And here's the shooting setup: 2 spot lights on the back, 2 led panels on the front. 1 wide shot, 1 closeup + the main from the GH5.
