I think there is a place for gimbal and IS. A gimbal is fantastic for following subjects and in the right hands can produce longer, steadier cinematic moves than IS can. However, with IS you can execute smaller cinematic moves with longer lenses much more easily and with no rigging at all it's very discrete for public/wedding/performance filming etc. I adore the IS on my GX85, I can work more unobtrusively and I can get shots I couldn't before due to time constraints.

Holy.... I never thought I would be considering a M4/3 camera. But this literally ticks ALL the boxes for me except the sensor size. Edit: If this comes in under $1500 I'm buying it.

this camera is superb , I've had to keep off the forum for a few months as a Panasonic Ambassador as I was not alowed to talk about it , But I tried the G80 3 months ago and was very very impressed especially with the Image stabalisation ! rolling shutter is also massivlly better its a huge leap forward and improvement , I'm shooting my whole next feature film with 6 of these new G80s they are that good . buy it!!

The Panasonic GH5 made my panties wet in joy, 4k at 50/60p, holy smokes! HOWEVER! What is the cost? That is what I care about, if it is like 3000+USD then there is no point I might as well just go buy a pro video camera for that price that does 4k at 120fps with RAW video, sure its larger but seriously Panasonic slapped great features in their camera, if it cost the same as the GH4 and Samsung NX1 at launch, holy smokes! Reason I went with NX1 and not a pro video camera was the price, 2k for camera and lens, great deal for what it can do although not selling it ever, I like it too much, I will probably use it as secondary or for fun until either the NX1 dies or I die of old age.

besides that guys, did you notice the release, first half of 2017- That probably means summer before widely available. And to know what it really can do, in the hands of users for at least a few weeks, probably longer. For starters will it take photos as well as the nx1, with that sensor, doubt it. So we might be looking at a Year. Not even thinking about selling. I'll need a really good reason.

I'm an animator. It's not really something you can just drop into. Takes a lot of time to learn and a lot of patience and dedication to get right. I recommend getting the book "Animator's Survival Kit" which goes through all the core principles of it, with plenty of illustrated examples. It's probably a great read even for those just interested in animation but not necessarily wanting to get into it. If you have a drawing tablet I recommend using Pencil 2D animation software http://www.pencil2d.org/ or if you have an ipad or android tablet get a stylus and the Rough Animator app. If you don't have either then I'd recommend getting one. I would stay away from massively complicated programs like Blender if you're just starting out. If you do get serious about animation, I'd recommend taking classes at ianimate or animschool rather than going to physical place of education.

It is very hard to please people these days. When one company finally brings 4K 60p and at the same time 4K 10bit 422 internaly to the masses (that we all whined about for a few years), now all of a sudden it is not that important. Sorry Panasonic we were just kidding, we don't actually need better image quality, we need autofocus that is connected to our brain so we can shoot, read magazines and drink coffee at the same time.

The ergonomics for stills stand out vs the A7S II, much nicer. For video the live-view experience is a big improvement with much higher frame rate screen, very quick to switch between video and stills mode on a lever, very quick to pause the AF by pressing a function button (either toggle or hold) or lock onto a subject simply by pressing the touch screen. The AF system on this camera is the best I've ever used be it video or stills, it rocks in both. Dual Pixel AF is an absolute bomb. It recognises faces in near darkness even when you can't see them yourself on the screen. It never seems to slow down much even in low light. Even at F1.2 on my beloved EF 50mm F1.2L it does a very good job so you barely have to think about focus. Not used manual focus on it yet ONCE. The automatic white balance maintains a warm naturalness to scenes with mixed indoor / outdoor lights, very nice indeed and never seems too cold or clinical. Colour is astounding on this camera. The 120fps quality is good for that kind of frame rate, and it is full frame. Better than the A7S II 120fps. It is almost the same quality as the 1080/24p. The 1080/24p is as detailed as the 1D C's full frame 1080/24p but without the moire correction. Not tried the HDMI output yet but has option for 1080/60/50p in the menu, so should do nice 1080/60p 1.3x crop when set to 4K 60p mode in-cam. 4K image quality is as you'd expect Fucking good. The file sizes are a downside as is the moire in full frame video mode 1080p. I used to shoot a lot of 1080p on the 1D C to get around the massive MJPEG codec. Rolling shutter MUCH less than A7S II and 1D C in 4K! Will say a lot more in the review, as only had the camera for 2 days! Bought it in Berlin at a store brand new.

You gonna regret this Dean! The more I use my nx1, the more I'm in love with it! (coming from Canon 5d markII and ugly colors of the GH4!) Sadly I didn't try the hack yet ...

New NX1 user reporting in. I just wanted to say hi as a new NX1 user (my camera arriving tomorrow to complete my stack of 3 lenses and flash). I am reading this long thread and the more I read the more impressed I am with dedication and passion of this group of NX1 users. And of course I am mostly impressed with knowledge and patience and dedication of people involved in modding. As long time software developer I am studying github repository as well. Although I am very time constrained but given some free time I could try to get involved in mode development.

I ended up getting a 1D X Mark II as well. It's astoundingly good but it has ONE really surprisingly disappointing aspect - they removed the digital moire filter in 1080p mode - it has more moire than the 5D Mark III and 1D X 1080p. A backward step for 1080/24p full frame. Good job there are plenty of other cameras much cheaper than shoot good full frame 1080p like the A7S!

For now they can't talk pretty much about anything at all, so I'm guessing they are not that close to final product. Wow! that was fast Dean! Please come back to discuss your experience. I do too been tempted with all the new Panasonic announcements, getting a G85 with the 12-60 for starts (replacing the NX500), a Yi for low budget - whatever- like I have the NX3000 now, and the GH5 eventually, it would be sufficient. Plus, maybe, the JVC LS300, or whatever similar video camera, Panasonic put out in the near future. Very low budget, multi cam 4K solution, best in industry. After all these announcements NX prices will drop vastly though, and buying a couple of S lenses for cheap, would be good too.

Oh boy! I was afraid they were going to put all the focus on stills and keep its video capabilities on the very down-low... (keeping the E-M5-line more video centric), but it seems, on paper, this might have it all... the only thing I'm scared for now is like crazy shot ruining moiré or something. This seems like a hybrid dream. Hopefully I don't have to wake up to a cruel reality. I'm loving it! New sensor tech. Superfast readouts/processing. 4K. Dual cardslot, improved AF, vari-angle screen, mic in+headphone jack, timecode even, flat profile, legendary Oly stabilization. It's all there. The only reason to get the GH5 is the cinema application shooting with stuff like LOG and anamorphic ratios and de-sequeeze. Super exciting!

I just bought it and what I can say... I tried for some minutes it on my father's Canon 6D and it is just AWESOME! I went far to ISO 3200 without problems! I tried only C-Log, Cinema 4 and Scarlet, in the next days I will try all the other profiles. For the moment: - C-Log is awesome, great DR no problem with shadows as I have with V-Log L recorded internally on the GH4. It's really a GIFT for any Canon user! You have to buy if you need a log profile! I'm going to try close to BlackMagic Micro Camera as soon as possible just to see differences and similarities. - Cinema 4 is a "neutral" with better colors and a slightly better DR. Great! I really like it for a 90% ready look. - Scarlet is a Fuji Velvia-like profile, with raised blacks, hyper saturated look (red blinks to my eyes) and less DR in order to have a great contrast. I think that just C-Log could cost at least more then V-Log L (it works wonders at 8 bit, instead with GH4 you have to record externally 10 bit to appreciate it), you have a lot of other great profiles, so don't wait that Andrew changes mind and buy it now! Thank you Andrew! And Canon has to thank you, because I'm really thinking to buy again a Canon just to use your profiles!

I shot a feature film with 6 Panasonic G7s earlier this year , Panasonic UK supported the movie and provided the cameras and asked me to become an Panasonic Ambassador as they like my work as a DP / cinematographer , and asked me to tec meetings with the Japanese Engineers for Cameras and Lenses etc I'm not alowed to talk about this at all ...yet , The G80 is 422 external for sure via HDMI out , I will have one to test for a week in 10 days time so watch this space.

As an owner of 2 Oly cams, I've been sitting around trying to be patient as they play catch up with their video capabilities. I still amaze myself how much I like using the EM5II. They may or may not meet and exceed Pany competition, but as long as they're in the ball park with what they're offering, I'll lean their way. Can't help it, just like how they've designed and built their gear.

As puzzling as it is to release a top spec'd A-mount camera, I commend Sony for STILL supporting a legacy mount, and rewarding long-term users with a current body. Samsung could learn a thing or two from this practice!

Low light has never been a strong point for video on nx1. Actually quite a weak point. But the sensor is much more capable that the video shows. In stills iso 3200 (or even better iso 100+5ev) is very ver usable.

Been really into Satoshi Kon and Don Hertzfeldt lately. Seemed like an interesting way to go, if it's doable, since I have so little help. Looks way more possible than I expected, having never even drawn much before. Looking at Blender 2d animation and Plastic Animation Paper. Didn't know if anyone here had experience animating, with tips for someone new, or thoughts on it opposed to live action, or could just share some of their favorite animated films. Anything really. Happy filming!

These kind of videos are... useless. A nice fellow, but he just rehash what we read on the net and did not even bother going to Photokina (not that expensive), as a real journalist should do, and talk to the people from Panasonic there to get all the details and bring something that was not yet said or confirmed. Waist of time, just click bait. He could even had taken his own videos and photos of the beast instead of relying on other's work... Sorry if I sound rude, but I have (now sold) ran a modest tech website in English and French from Japan on Japanese tech and being on the go to cover press event or show like these where our first priority to get something that others were too lazy to get.

I've been itching for this cam as well! Slight image trade offs from the 1DC for huge usability gains like autofocus and sharp slo mo. One thing that I have yet to hear mentioned on here is how beautiful the underexposure of the 1dc or 1dx mjpeg can be. It just has a nice shadow rolloff. I shot at the Georgia aquarium in 4k last week on a family trip and noticed how clean the images came out. very cinematic feeling, never got this with the 6d or 5d without overexposing and then trying to bring it back down. If the manfrotto Sympla thumb controller can move the auto focus box around that'd be a great setup for single user gimbal work.

@AaronChicago just downloaded the dng you uploaded and wow that has alot of range and was super fun to play with! Forenote: the only video footage I have experience grading has been from my nikon d5200 and flat profiles from my d5300. I love how the look the footage has to it. Do you remember what lens/lighting you shot for that scene? (The one with the man and macbook )

Terrible idea, this is how you'll loose probably a few gigs if the card fails. Dont put all your eggs in a single basket!

Google Ruslan Pelykh. I have a Sony RX10 II which I use along with an A7R II. It has limits, mainly do to with Sony's menu and the small sensor. Deployment somewhat slow.Considerable advantages too: shared profiles with other Sony cameras, making matching easy; takes the same XLR attachment; good range fast zoom. (Most of) this was done with the RX10 II over the summer, testing out some of its features.

I've enjoyed shooting with my Fujifilm S8000fd and Canon SX1 IS a lot. The things I didn't like... fuzzy manual focus, sucky in lowlight and lens usually doesn't start that wide. Other than that... apart from that 1" sensor, that new Pana FZ2500 might cover all your basic needs. Too bad they didn't stick to the FZ200-formula of having a constant f/2.8 aperture lens. I mean, zooming in to 560mm equiv or something is cool too, but I'd happily ditch some range for better light gathering ability. I think bridges are super flexible though. I usually take one when I travel and expect to see different environments and shoot during daylight mostly. For cityscapes I prefer either something like the LX100 or a interchangeable one with a few neat lenses. Don't need that much range in the city. Do appreciate the better lowlight handling there and adding a bit character to shots with some purposely included bokeh. Also... with sensors that small you also going to get contrasty images with highlights blown out and shadows crushed. They do give you a lot of detail though. I was somewhat amazed by the panoramic capability of the FZ1000. You could see every leaf in every tree.

Well the next Panasonic FZ will record 4K at 200 Mbps, which is double the current rate. Might make a big difference. The XC10 records at 300 I think, so perhaps that is the key with the smaller sensors, as many love the XC10 video.

I think they would be even better if they didn't have 20+ megapixel 1" sensors. The RX10 lens is probably the perfect lens for run and gun. Hell if the FZ1000/2000 was clean till ISO 6400 it would be the perfect tun and gun camera for me. Basically take the best stuff from the FZ2000 and RX10 II and at $1500 you have the best all purpose video camera.

For sure, even if GH5 will be a bit better than NX1 for video (and that's to be seen) it won't be for still pics. Perhaps EM1-mk2 will be more stills oriented, but then you need to have two bodies. Or...you get a GH5 for video and a FF camera for stills, but again two bodies and two systems, here. NX1 is so well balanced that even when other cameras will start reaching and surpassing it for individual specific tasks, it will still be a very good overall solution.

I have a couple of 7D2 bodies and they're great with Andrew's Clog. Plus the 7D2 has clean HDMI out where as the 80D does not. I also use my cameras with Atomos Ninja 2 recorders to get ProRes files - very helpful for smooth editing and easier on the grading process. Just my thoughts.

There we go! that thinking trumps all weird concern everyone has about a "dead system" imo. It's only a problem if you upgrade all the time. This thing could last you 10+ years, and definitely make your $1500 worth it.

Oh yeah, no question. That why I found the joke ironic given that Blackmagic is pretty much the only sub $1k camera that can compete with it. The joke kinda took a nosedive from the start

Too soon was, perhaps, in november 2014, when nx1 arrived with h.265. Now it should be fine.
