  1. Yes the menus are fantastic, the general control layout - I did not realise this until today when I finally put it in my hand - is lovely. Much nicer than I expected. Even the polycarbonate plastic construction doesn't bother me. If anything it's good, because it makes for a very lightweight construction. This is a big camera by mirrorless standards but a TINY and light on by pro video standards, let alone cinema RAW proportions. Yes there are baffling decisions going on but a lot of common sense too. I still do not like Blackmagic's launch strategy and initial shipping quantities, it is ridiculous to be tormented for months with a mix of teasing and social media hype - I almost went mad - but believe me it is worth the wait. Again like BTM says, far from perfect, or without quirks - but it is different to anything else I own and a worthy upgrade from the original - in fact it is SIGNIFICANTLY better than that first camera in every way. Something I did not realise until I actually turned up. I am going to have so many words to eat from this thread, I'll probably choke to death.

Agree with @Shirozina Yes, go for the 1080 and 32GB over the 1070 and 64GB of RAM. You can always add more RAM later if you need to.

  8. Yeah the customisation of EOS-R is kind of understated i feel. 3 custom still modes + 3 custom movie modes + My Menu + Arrow keys + Mfn Bar + Ring control etc.. that's quite a bit! Almost a month in and I'm finally settling on what i feel is now perfect setup for my type of shooting and it feels amazing. Both modes cut very well with the C100. Obviously, crop mode does better with only x0.2 crop difference and similar 4K downsampled IQ. No example footage I'm afraid ( you can thank Vimeo for pulling the plug on my account.. over an old private video SMH). EOS-R has original C100/C300 Clog or C200 "Neutral" CLog options.

If your budget is stretched I'd go for 32g RAM and a 1080 rather than 64g Ram and a 1070.

  10. For that price, I'd opt for a Varicam LT or RED Raven any day. Hell, with some hunting you can find an Alexa Classic w/high speed license for that money.

  12. I agree, it's not good that they still have bugs, but it is excellent that they continue to release updates. I see Z Cam as the polar opposite of a company like Canon: if you want maintenance-free reliability and instant integration into existing workflows, look to the traditional products like Canon's C line. If you want bleeding edge, not-tried-and-true technology that you can experiment with, and provide meaningful feedback on to guide the development of the next generation of products, that's where Z Cam fits in. It's similar to the difference between Linux and Apple. It's entirely possible to have a great experience, reliably using Linux to do real-world work, but you do have to do your own research, and accept more responsibility as an end-user to debug things on your own. And the truth of that situation is that Z Cam will likely never have the market sway that Canon et. al. do, and will never have the resources or vast QA teams to match the big players. But the benefit of the small team is you can have a more personal experience--I mean, you can't just hop on Facebook and provide personal input to the Canon CEO on what features they should include.

  13. That's why I always take people like Max test with a pinch of salt. Imean if ever you have worked with a Nikon camera you know that this is not the kind of skin tone you would get. The second thing, I am not saying that the z7 can have more detail, but you have NR settings in the z7. Did he use it, or is it set up from standard to be high, I guess we will never know. The problem is that he has never worked with a Nikon camera and his first test was already revealing that because he could have easily decrease the sharpening in camera setting before concluding that it was oversharpenned. If you don't know a camera at least ask some people for help or spend a bit more time testing it, rather than being the first and getting clicks.

  15. Thank you @Emanuel ! All I am saying is that Z have to improve their efforts. The more players in the market, the better cameras we will have sooner. I am wondering how many from this forum bought their previous camera full price, or on B&H sale though..

  19. Well written Andrew. Just out of interest, when using my Speedbooster XL and Canon 24-105 f4, The P4K displays the max apurture as f2.7. Also, when using my Canon 1.8 primes, the max apurture displays as f1.2 with the Speedbooster XL. I know some people have commented they want a Full Frame pocket 4K but I think that the MFT sensor is one of it's biggest strengths and extremely versatile. As you say, a crop of only 1.2 when used with a speedbooserXL and great lowlight performance with it's combination of speed booster light magnification and great sensor.
    1 point
  20. But from this picture it does not look like it may be wide enough for the PK4??
    1 point
  21. I wish it were S35 as well! but the P4k is actually not that far off S35 if you add a speedbooster as the 19x10mm sensor is longer and thinner than the stock 17.3 x13mm M43 sensor.

Have you used the latest version of Resolve? They have been gradually ironing out the performance issues and bugs with every new update. Yes 2 1070's would be good if you want to spread the cost. Better still a 1070 now and add a 1080ti to it later!

  23. Who's to say the won't at some point in the future? and come to think of it why can't they put a FF sensor in the same body and sell it for £5000? The really should get their act together - who wants an M43 sensor camera with dual ISO, ProRes, RAW and Resolve Studio for 1350€ anyway..........?

  25. Ursa is too big! I have expressed my opinion about my most preferred camera, a Canon C100 mini/XC something, with XC15 form factor, EF-M mount and improved ergonomics for 2-3000€, and then Canon released the C200 which is almost a 10.000€ camera, and realized that Canon don't really gets it. While C100 and C300 dominated the market for years, FS5 and FS7 cameras have been the norm in most productions I am working lately, and BM is starting to be relative in productions. After the R release, I do not expect anything of them, and I have to move on with a plan B. So, right now, it is Sony, or BM, and I do not particularly like the FS5 or the Ursa that much to spend 6-8.000€ for one of those. So, I would rather spend 3.000€ to rig a Pocket4K at the moment! I do not like adapters, and m43 sensors, the specific dual ISO - slightly bigger - sensor offsets makes it more appealing for a video camera (I would never use a small megapixel camera for pro photography), but still I would spend double the money for an S35 small video camera. If BM can make an amazing m43 one for 1350€, why not a similar one S35 for 2499 or 2999€??!! Still it would be half the price, and size, of Ursa.
    1 point
  26. Well I wouldn't be interested if it was twice the price as i don't mind the compromises and no you didn't request my buying advice but I'm giving it to you again anyway - if this camera doesn't meet your needs then don't buy it!
    1 point
  27. I would have preferred an XC15 design with the tilt screen. I don't understand why they did not just make it look like a video camera. As it is it looks rather awkward. A rotating grip would have been great to have. A bigger battery would have gone a long way to negate the need for rigging.

  28. I understand your point but, I don't find this test useless as matter of fact. ETTR, that is, expose to the right is the way to go with this camera.

  30. It’s funny the amount of contradictory remarks on this forum. I remember reading more than a few times that users are pleased that companies update their older products, even while new products are in the market. Yet it’s laughable by those sharing that same sentiment because of a fix that took a while to complete. I respect companies, big or small, that can provide continuous support for their users. It shows a level of commitment that creates brand loyalty and quality interactions, which brings better products to the market. These E1’s have been the most incredible supplementary cinema cameras in my tool box and I’m stoked that Z-Cam users still get the support for it!

Of course it would always be great to have a high end work station but just to add another view point to some of the high spec suggestions above.. It depends what files you are working with ie low compression raw files will need the fast raid drives but files from gh5/fujis/Sony's not so much. I am currently using a i7 7700k with a Amd Rx 480 (8gb) GPU and no big raid set ups. I use resolve with a variety of 4k footage from Pana/Fuji/blackmagics and can run all projects at the full frame rates with smooth editing all around. Only noise reduction slows it down. Even with a bunch of nodes and film convert it still 100% smooth. For me a bigger rig would only cut render times and improve noise reduction performance. So think about your usesage/budget together.

  33. hmm.. unfortunately it doesn't look like that's case right now. Was it like that on the original pocket as well? I don't remember but it would be good to have the WB change dynamically indeed or at least have an option for it.. I shot almost exclusively raw so far so i wasn't too bothered about wb as long as it was in the right ballpark but it would definitely be important when shooting ProRes.. Shall we compile a list of suggestion to send Blackmagic for the next software versions? Here's mine: - Playback mode to reflect clip metadata (both on the display and on the menu bar) - Thumbnail page in playback mode to quickly move between files - Better power management so the camera won't die on you suddenly - Possibility of using the iris and focus button as extra function keys when using manual lenses

  35. Out of curiosity, I just looked at a heap of cameras from most manufacturers and compared the various manufacturers settings on DXO versus the measured ISOs. Things are all over the place. Fuji does not get scored these days (because of the X trans thing I think). I looked at five different ISOs and things vary at each settings but there were a few things that surprised me. I think Sony and Samsung WERE probably overall the closest to measured standards* but the recent Sony cameras have dropped back a fraction so they are similar to the others. Samsung was closer to the measured amounts too but they stopped making cameras around the same time as Sony dropped a bit. (It probably goes something like Sony, Samsung, Samsung Sony). If I had looked at different ISO settings I might have seen something slightly different. It does seem that at least for the thirty odd cameras I looked at and at the five ISOs I looked at the closest to measured might be the original A7s and then the NX1. At some ISOs the Samsung is closer and at others the Sony. The Samsung NX300 is also close and then maybe the Sony A3000 (I looked at the usual suspects and some cameras I have owned and some I am interested in and some historic ones). EDIT A7s is closer to measured over more ISOs in their common range than the NX1. At some ISOs, some cameras that are overall quite a way from the measured ISO are better than others. For instance, at ISO 100, the cameras closest to 100 are the Canon 7D and 7Dii (both 94) and then the Panasonic GH4 (88) but they all drop away a lot above ISO 100. Despite the Canon 7d pair being so close to measured ISO at ISO 100, the other Canons I looked at are all further away than most APSC or larger sensor cameras. Panasonic GX7 is also close but at ISO 125 instead of 100 (108 measured). The Olys ARE quite a way behind (EM1 ii measures 83 but at ISO 200). All this really means NOTHING but I was curious and find it interesting. * Fuji isn't tested these days and does have a reputation for being further away from measured ISO but the camera I found to be closest overall was actually the Fuji S5 (and was closer to measured ISO at all three I looked at including 100 (95). Again, this means NOTHING and if I looked at other cameras and other ISOs things might be different. Oh and DXO is a great guide but it isn't Gospel ( I do love their RAW conversion software though).

  40. For lowlight, these results are pretty much as expected The A7iii is full frame supersampled from 6k to 4k, the BMPCC is M43 (-2 stops), EOS-R FF sensor heavily cropped (-2 stops), XT-3 APSC (-1 stop) and the Z7 is high resolution sensor with pixel binning (a comparison with a Z6 would be fairer.)

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Yes, unlike the P4k the X-T3 has no IBIS. It has to make do with lens stabilization only. Oh wait, the P4k doesn't have IBIS either... and the OIS does not work well on the P4k? I guess that makes it doubly useless of video?

if you would imagine for a moment that photography is like food, then i would contend for the rest of your life you can only eat 3 things steak, potato and beans. while you might live a long life, it would be kinda boring having the same stuff everyday. much more interesting is the idea of a smorgasbord occasionally which is what a bunch of lenses gives you

  47. @IronFilm im sorry, i dont mean to be negative, i was painting all night thinking about art lol i guess i feel like the money was spent in these videos on all the nuts and bolts aspects of the production in each case, things like THE CAMERA, the way it moves, lighting, etc., which makes perfect sense, dont get me wrong~! but conceptually, the three are quite similar, and i guesss i dont think that the increased budget made the clips better so i was thinking about that, from a nonconceptual standpoint, looking at the production in technical terms, why is that? and i think its because: ive become so desensitized to watching "amateurish" smartphone videos, presented as being professional, that it has become the new normal edit: yes ofc i see the difference in production quality, im saying its not reflected in overall quality. all three ads suck. if i paid $1000 for the first ad id honestly be like WTF... is this a joke? thats why i said that! its AWFUL. *NOTHING* is good about it... nothing!!!! it stinks on paper: its poorly written, poorly conceived, unoriginal and boring. the acting is awful, that guy sucks, hes not funny... i mean what the hell ? there are THOUSANDS of 6 SECOND VINE VIDEOS that are borderline amazing with a budget of $0 sorry to be such a hard ass (i admit it lol), and i understand the point about production being scaled in various ways due to budget! a great exercise, i think, would be to commission something like this, with the SAME SCRIPT, something that presents some production challenges on the page, then produce the films on wildly different budgets. the low budget film would be forced to be super creative in that regard, while the high budget film would have awesome tools which make the impossible possible, or at least way easier im just thinking out loud! hands up dont shoot! ?
