  1. Hey Guys ! Here it is ! I just picked it up at Photocineshop in Paris I was the first in queue, I called them monday, they told me they expected it mid october. But I received a call today telling me it's here so... They received only 3 cameras. They ordered 75 and have 60 in queue. Funny story, the guy at the counter told me the boss was mad at him because the boss wanted to keep the first ones for rent (it's also a big rental company) and not fulfilling the first orders ! I think I have the first retail version in France ( I know it's a lame sentence !) I'll try to shoot something decent tomorrow and put it online the same day ! But I only have relatively fast SD cards. I just need to sell a kidney for a CFAST on which I'll be able to record 12 seconds of RAW footage :))) I can't wait to test the dynamic range and the battery life of the camera, my two biggest concerns.

  2. Does anyone really think a Fujifilm sales ambassador is going to know where the sensor comes from, let alone tell everyone?! Remember that companies deny things all the time. Samsung denied they were leaving the camera market ?

I think like a lot of gentlemen of a certain age, I have an attachment to 50mm as its what we all had as our standard lenses when we got our first SLRs and used them to shoot dinosaurs roaming in the local park. I'm sure Google has a way of generating EXIF from any image so when they tire of snooping on us electronically and invent a way of physically sifting through our cupboards and drawers undetected they'll scan all those negs and slides from latter part of the 20th century and we'll find that about 75% of pictures were taken on a 50mm. I never really bought into the 50mm being closest to what the eye sees - or at least concentrates on for want of a better expression - but its not totally far off. I suspect its probably even less so now though for people who have grown up looking at the world through a 28mm equivalent on their iPhones as they have developed a wider (yet simultaneously narrower ) viewpoint of what is standard. Anyway, a couple more from the 7Artisans 50mm f1.1 at narrower apertures to balance out the previous glowfest examples of shooting it wide open.

  5. I went from the GH5 to the X-T3 (with a brief fling with an RX1Rm2 in between) and I think the GH5's touch screen is way more responsive than the Fuji. The Fuji is fine, but there have been times where I try to use the screen to change the focus point while looking through the VF and it doesn't always respond, which isn't something I ever experienced with the GH5.

  6. If you're looking for a cheap alternative to the Peli 1510 case, then these are actually pretty decent for a quarter of the price. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/329-US-PRO-Waterproof-Wheeled-Rolling-Travel-Equipment-Tool-Box-Hard-Case-Foam/162057203114?hash=item25bb5cadaa:g:APUAAOSwLs5XKx2R These padded dividers are really useful for transforming any rucksack into a camera bag and for general storage and faster packing of real camera bags. I have a load of them and organise gear into logical sets (speedlites with triggers in one pack, mics and recorders in another one etc etc) so I can pack bags quickly for different jobs. http://amzn.eu/d/0OlQsE5

  7. Well it is plastic, and this was a well known fact from since the camera was announced. I would say that if you are accustomed to magnesium alloy bodies you will be disappointed in the perceived build quality. The original pocket felt much more solid. The new one honestly does feel cheap when compared to all metal bodies. But then again, if they had used all metal construction there is no way they could sell this body for the current low price. It's a trade off for sure. However I do like the images out of camera. It's a shame more reviewer don't shoot at 24p instead of slowmo. We all know slowmo by default looks cinematic. But slowmo is more of a niche use case. Whereas, normal speed playback is much more frequently used. It's hard to judge motion cadence with slowmo.

  10. Those pictures are of two completely different devices... not a device with a mod attached. I'll go out on a limb and suggest that this phone is nothing more than hype. If Samsung and Apple cannot create a camera phone that is better than a dedicated camera of the same vintage, then Red will not be the one to crack that particular nut.

There aren't wrong focal lengths of course, only tools for a job. I've been told many times that shooting with only one prime is a great way to focus yourself and really learn how to see what the camera sees before holding it up. I can also totally understand if someone really likes the feel of a certain lens and just wants to use that. I did my fair share of street photography, much of it with the 14mm F2.5 m43 lens and have shot enough now to also be able to 'see' a range of shots that are possible with a zoom lens, and frequently would walk into a place, shoot half a dozen or more compositions in my head before rejecting all of them and not bother to do anything with the camera even though it is in my hand. In my case I'm looking to tell the story of the event or trip and so I really want to be able to capture anything I can see, unfortunately that would require something like a 10-600mm lens which is obviously out of the question. I can crop into the footage to extend the long end and also the viewer will also unconsciously crop when they see the bit of the frame with the action in it. I can also extend the wide end of the lens by panning or tilting which in a way creates a reveal, but if you're at the top of a mountain it's still a bit like looking at the world through the mail slot. You're probably right, but definitely hilarious! ?

  15. @Sage With the Ninja V coming out soon, how would you use it with the GH5? You're able to bake in LUTs with the Ninja V. Would you suggest doing that at all to get the look straight out of the camera, or add it later still? If we can shoot like that, we'd be able to get a good look in camera and have a quicker turn around time too.

  18. Been wanting to see this for years as I hate the a6x00 form factor. If Sony is really chasing the sports/wildlife segment, a d500/7d2 competitor is needed. The a9 is badass, but you need a TC for wildlife and that still leaves you wanting more reach at times. I use an adapted Sigma 150-600 with the MC11 when I want reach, and usually I go with the a73 because its so much nicer in use. On the video side the fatter body, bigger battery and vastly superior ergos would be most welcome. The a73 is the most comfortable E-mount body I've used, and I've used most of them going back to the Nex5. Hopefully they don't skimp on the EVF and LCD like they did with the a73. As we've seen from the XT3, they have a next level APS-c sensor on tap. My biggest question is whether they're willing to go 10-bit and 4k60p in one of the Alpha bodies to compete with Fuji or if we're going to get the same 8-bit, 4:2:0 with the bitrate capped at 100mbps. 19. Congratulations! Yes, I too am very curious about the DR and how it compares to the GH5S and Sony's A7III. It's not going to be as good as 15 stops, but a true 13 stop DR would be welcome with good highlight roll-off. Looking forward to your tests.

  21. No, I don't own the lens but I am considering the systems from a cost analysis perspective for someone like me moving from canon who wants video and fast af for sport and wildlife. The Fuji is overpriced considering u can get a Canon 100-400 FF for the same price (not including rebate). I haven't seen the the eye af for Sony in action so can't comment on its usefulness. I'm sure the new Sony will be good but unless u already own the lenses they price themselves out by a fair margin. I personally wouldn't go adapted as the performance isn't there. If you are spending so much on a camera why cripple it. But yes the problem with Fuji is that you are tied to that system.

  22. Nope it was an auto ISO problem, Zed even mentions it in this video from 6:40: Edit: funny thing is that you as the creator of this thread specifically mention smooth auto iso as a feature of v1.10:

  31. Maybe I am missing something here . . . but . . . I find the touch to focus on my GH5 works extremely well. The other AF options can be a hit and miss. What I was looking for were comments on the XT-3 touchscreen touch to focus.

  34. I am seriously considering moving from a GH5 to the XT-3. Can anyone with experience of both cameras talk about the general responsiveness of the XT-3 touchscreen in comparison to the GH5 which I use a lot for touch focus and menu navigation. I have always found the GH5 touchscreen to work great. Thanks for any help on this.

  37. Yes - colors and how the image looks are so much more important than specs. I used a canon c200 which used an 8 bit codec when recording mp4 and the 8 bit codec looked better than most cameras. In deciding which camera I want, the thing I kept going back to was color and feel and so far all the footage I have seen with the xt-3 looks better than the pocket 4k, GH5/s, or any Sony series camera. Add the fact that it takes great stills as well and THAT is the reason why I am contemplating selling my Sony gear. Specs are specs, but how does the footage look, is whats important to me.

Idk, I have to agree with Mattias on this one. In FF, 35mm and 50mm are my favorite focal lengths... I could film an entire movie with either focal length if I was forced to use only one lens. And for aps-c, 24mm and 35mm FF lenses are fairly inexpensive and they both equate to 35mm and 50mm respectively. Logical choices IMO.

Speaking of daft 50mm lenses..... More M mount shenanigans, this time with the 7Artisans 50mm f1.1 Shot wide open on full frame, the depth of field is shallower than an ant's paddling pool.

  40. One of the biggest advantage of Full Frame for me is that you can use those super versatile F4 zoom on your camera for 99% of the shots. I intend to get the 24-70 F4 which will cover 80-90% of normal use when you counter in APSC mode. Something like the 24-120 Nikon would be a 24-180 with the Apsc mode and would cover 99% of my need for reportage shooting. The big advantage is that F4 on a full frame is like f 2.8 35mm cinema dof, so you still have plenty of shallow DOF. The second advantage is shooting in LOG format which is generally 800 ISO. To get proper ND to shoot at these high ISO during daytime is very very costly. You would need to close down your aperture again to at least F4 and F5.6 and the Full frame would again get you better DOF control. Nice, thats the guy who did Nikon music video, shoulder rest rig, no stab. What I like is the rack focus in some of those shots, very organic. Nice

  44. Thank you. I mostly just talk to the locals first and then ask to take their portrait. Then I get uncomfortably close . It's something that you have to get used to I suppose and can be very difficult at first. Also there are tricks to getting long takes like this without insulting the people. We didn't take a fixer, but that certainly does make it easier.

  45. This is speculation, but I think one of the reasons they've focused on the photography aspect is because the success of the camera long term hinges on photographers adopting the system. They've already established themselves with video shooters and know they have their attention, so it would make sense to focus on the photography side in the early stages.
