P4K Manual has gone up today.. Link4 points

Hey guys, sorry for the delay. I'm deep in technical at the moment. I can be reached directly via email Noise amplification and artifacts are completely absent with the conversion (others feel free to chime in); the next update will hit the theoretical max for smoothness, for which I am very excited No S yet, I'm still completely occupied with updating the 5; in any case if I get to it, you will get it All-I is on the level with ProRes, if you'd like to record internally As of this moment, VLog is preferable to C-D & HLG, because of the directness of the conversion (the fidelity/smoothness is simply better). That gap is about to close considerably For normal speed, you can overexpose, no need for more than a stop (avoid skintone around/above 65). Avoid underexposure* Of late, because of the nature of grading tools and complexity of hue lock outs, which I will cover in the next Pdf, I think it is best practice to try to expose for your preferred final image using the .vlt in the viewfinder (for reference performance, especially for PPro users). For 120, *definitely overexpose - just avoid placing anything important deep in the rolloff. Monitoring Luts are for VLog only Thanks man. The two biggest compliments I've received were from Amira shooters. Andrew Wilding said he preferred EC 'Soft' to the Amira itself, which made my day* Here is a still using Verde and something more recent: v2.2 Verde ?4 points

Just keep doing you, man! The level to which brainless, artless social media whores have taken over representing creativity online is truly horrifying. Beyond shameful brand and corporate alignment, these folks have rendered the pursuit of art into a series of meaningless life hacks that give uncreative consumers the illusion of creativity. Want to be a great photographer? Strive for bokeh! Take long exposures of shorelines! Orange and teal everything! Lift those shadows to a mid-tone gray and vintagize your images by 30%! Consider these five tricks to make your photos look like [insert useless Instagram celebrity]! HDR it! As with many dreamers, I used to believe that the internet would democratize the publication of art by empowering artists. It has—technically—done that I suppose, but what few considered until it was too late (for art, journalism, hell—the truth!) is that it would cheapen and destroy creativity by putting a good-enough facsimile within reach of any slob with a phone without them needing to actually learn the craft. The good news is that cultural shifts come in waves that are eventually met with backlash. The hyper-shilling is already showing cracks and it’s fairly young. People in my country are witnessing the fatal outcome of celebrity worship via our presidential nightmare. I think we’re nearing a tipping point where authenticity will be highly valued again and I want folks like you to be around to reap the rewards!4 points -

Come on.....seriously? $1300 for a camera with the specs of the Pocket4K AND a full license of Davinci Resolve? How exactly is that not being bold! BMD have literally given everyone what they have been complaining about for years.....RAW, 4K60p, 10bit, great colour science, good dynamic range.....and at an amazing price so we now complain about the way they are marketing/releasing the camera? It's official, camera companies will NEVER win.4 points -
Tried out the Z7 today at Allen's Camera in NJ, came away extremely impressed. Very responsive (quick to turn on, no hesitation in the menus) , beautiful EVF, great IBIS (smoother than Sony) and the video tracking for me was better than what I saw in the A7III. 24-70 was very sharp and focused well, but lacked character for me in it's rendering. 35 1.8 was incredible, razor sharp, great rendering. They did not have the 50mm there. What floored me the most was video AF with my Nikon AF-s glass. It was excellent! The focus motors are not quiet, but the focus was smooth and didn't hunt at all. Would not hesitate to use for event work. The adapter seemed rock solid when mounted on the camera. Obviously would need to use for an extended period of time to see other issues, but so far I think they have a winner.3 points

andrew, forget about that paycheck argument, and any "proof" about being a pro cinematographer or not. you can not measure this way. i always worshipped your honest opinion, and an emotional outburst just proofs that there`s a human being behind all of this, that does not write reviews on his pocket calculator. admitting that you went a little over the top just underlines that. another big plus for you. the PR machinery has chewed up a lot of unbiased coverage these days and i never know wether all the praise was bought or is true. except on eoshd! for me the latest canon coverage was the final nail in that coffin, how can anyone with a sound mind write something positive about this thing? well, you probably can if you`ve been to hawaii... and what`s the use of that BM event (for us readers) without any attendee being allowed to shoot a single frame himself? what we as readers end up with is just a bunch of blog posts that basically read like the tec specs list of the camera, i could have gotten that info from BM`s website a lot easier... best, wondo3 points -

To be honest, their supposed PR "missteps" isn't even a legitimate concern for me. I don't get the complaints. The camera that should clearly cost at least 5,000. And they charge 300 for a software with lifetime upgrade that competitors are milking for several times more, or ridiculous monthly subscription. The camera's coming out in less than a month! It's feels odd to me to say this about a camera company, but I've become a big fan and evangelical of Blackmagic and their ethos. Picking a fight with Blackmagic over PR "missteps" is like castigating one of the small handful in the room who gives a shit about democratizing cinema tools for filmmakers, all because they didn't say hi to everyone in the room.3 points

Rumor says they will keep DFD tech with no DPAF. Why on earth would they do that? If this camera has high mpx + GH5 video specs like 4K60P and 10 bit, it's going to be an absolute killer. But if they keep their shitty AF well it's going to be the dealbreaker. Dont do that Panasonic, dont be so dumb.2 points -

@Ryley K @Téodor Spencer Hey thank you both! Ummm for lenses these were all from either an old Nikon 28mm 2.8 and a 35mm 2.4 Zeiss Flektogon - I always use a black pro mist 1/8 on all my footage. I don't do too much to get to this look - I follow Alex's methods, adding his olpf simulation on the front end. I then use his curves recommendation with the 'hue pass-through' method. After that I add some extra contrast and saturation in LAB colorspace to give some extra color separation and then add some film grain. Alex has done something truly incredible with this lut in my opinion - He has totally flipped the idea of what a lut is capable of on its head.2 points -
Well told story. Stop buying cameras and turn that into a short film.2 points

Exactly, it can record an hour plus... but you need pocket to support it's appetite for storage... And that storage had better be fast. I have had lesser "bargain" CFast card produce errors as they could not manage the data rate. There are SSD solutions for the C200 also. Granted, with the collection of CFast cards I acquired, I would have no difficulty feeding the P4k. I want to see the camera in the hands of independent reviewers. I'm going to get one... it's so cheap that it would be silly not to have one on hand. That said, I think many will get this camera, only to sell if shortly thereafter. It will not be for the casual shooter. Don't be fooled, in the right hands almost any of the usual suspect could produce amazing footage. This reminds me of something that happened to me when I was 4 years old. I was walking in London with my father. Then a short distance away something caught my attention. There in the hustle and bustle of down town London stood a man. Floating above him was a replica of an Airship. I marveled at the attention to detail. I was captivated by how realistic it looked. I begged my father to purchase one of the replicas that the man was selling. He looked at me and patted me on the head after paying the stranger and handing me a small envelope containing the wondrous replica. I recall pondering, how it was possible to fit such a magnificent model into such a small package? Later that day we arrived safely back home. I was eager to open the package to see this incredible work of art. Upon opening the envelope my heart sank.... the package contained nothing more than a gray ballon. It looked nothing like the amazing model that the man was holding. I sadly realized there was no way I would be able to make it look like the model the man had shown me. I learned something that day... And it has stuck with me ever since. I supposed what I'm saying is that I believe some are really looking for Hollywood in a box... Any camera can produce compelling stories... but first you need a compelling story... and all the other element to tell it. The camera is only one part of the puzzle.2 points

RED just lost a huge advantage with this release. One of the best things they had going was the many flavors of RAW on their cameras. I hope Blackmagic does not make it difficult for Adobe to implement support for it, as that is the one thing that could hold this great feature back.2 points

At around 22 minutes, Grant talks about shooting in Video Gamma, but the background 'sidecar' files have the metadata of Film Gamma. Does that basically mean with this new format you can shoot for a straight out of camera file, that has the flexibility of RAW should you need it later on? That's absolutely amazing for TV and news work. Broadcast ready files that can go out straight off the cards, but can be archived and graded later. It's pretty much game changing in my field. That alone is a reason to go Blackmagic.2 points

Today at IBC, BMD announce a new Blackmagic RAW codec. Available in a number of variations, depending on your needs for image quality over file size, it appears to overtake ProRes RAW, and will be usable in a number of NLEs thanks to their free SDK for developers. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/nl/media/release/20180914-01 From @sanveer It seems to address 2 Huge things: 1. The ProRes RAW that Apple was attempting to push across all RAW shooting cameras (which has issues, since it doesn't have any specific flavours and only has a Wrapper for the Proprietory RAW from different camera manufacturers). Blackmagic seems to even show the fundamental flaws with that approach ("Blackmagic RAW is much more than a simple RAW container format. Its intelligent design actually understands the camera and the sensor."). 2. Not enough Compression Options in RAW. Most RAW compressions weren't actually pushing RAW closer to manageable territory (ProRes and H.264 size). This new RAW codec seems to address that (Blackmagic RAW 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1). The only question is would it succeed without being open source for other camera manufacturers or only NLE support is good enough.1 point

You must not have read the first half of my post where I pointed out the fact WE HAVE ARRIVED at Shangri La (on paper at least). The post was expressing my general opinion which is multidimensional about the subject of recent events. You seem to dig maniacally to uncover points of disagreement and blow them up as if my original post was somehow personally directed at you, which is strange. I wasn't attacking BM or Reid, just giving a personal opinion for crying out loud. Can you coexist with other people's viewpoints?1 point -

People seem to be making a big deal about the fact that there hasn't been an in depth review yet of this camera...which hasn't even been released. Tell me, how many other camera manufacturers have allowed in depth critical reviews of their cameras pre release? Go to your BMD retailer when they are in stock, test the camera out yourself and make your decision based on what you experience and with the other reviews that will come out once the camera is released. It seems that the real issue here is that people today are just too damn impatient. Then we have people complaining about the release being delayed even though we are still in September. Have people really gone ahead and planned a shoot for October 1...is that why everyone is so impatient? Seems like everyone has a case of the Veruca Salts!1 point -
Fuji X-T3 has 4K60P and 10 bit
Geoff CB reacted to thebrothersthre3 for a topic
The NX1 didn't have 10 bit and the rolling shutter performance wasn't very good. Not trying to diss the camera but the Fuji a step up from anything on the market, as long as it isn't buggy. For people worried about the colors it should be pretty much the same as the XH1. The good thing is if you don't like Fuji color you can shoot in 10 bit Log and grade it how you like, or use a Lut. The one thing I wish they had done different is the battery. A bigger battery would be nice even if the camera had to be bigger. Its not a huge deal but still.1 point -

Andrew, you do often come across as someone who is resentful, intolerant, often spiteful, takes offence easily and with a grudge against the world. Andrew, Jun could also view your comments about him as snide. All because he got a camera, and you did not... It feels like you're jumping to critique all video's uploaded by someone with a Pocket 4K in another attempt to support your stance that BMD is giving cameras to the wrong people. I remember a thread here, some time back where more than a few guys critiqued your color grade on one of your Canon videos, and you responded like you never thought you'd receive criticism. You have threatened to quit this whole thing more than once, and people have always begged you to keep at it. People are here because they appreciate what you've created, but you pay way too much attention to the negative... No one can argue the numbers your site gets, but your victim attitude isn't winning.1 point -

My LS300 still has the ui of a 90s camcorder and just feels ancient. But I love the picture!1 point -

The price for Greece is 1749euros, that is not close to 1499$ at all, and the camera is manufactured in China. I would expect a lower starting price, this is not 2017! It probably has the most desired specs for me, but I believe I can squeeze another year from my NX1 cameras. There is no equal to the 16-50S, which is my main workhorse for some years now.1 point -
That's a good idea. I'm going to do a tutorial video, and streamline the vital points to emphasize them. Yes, the Premiere PRE (for VLog) corrects a subtle green distortion in VLog shadows that is unique to Premiere. Then you may use 'Main' in the 'Creative' section. The LogC variation is a distinct workflow (exact copy of what comes out of an Alexa, as measured at every point in the colorspace) that requires a (3rd) display Lut. Main prepares everything nicely, so that you are right in range of correct cinema luma placement (a place graders often go awry), have the correct Arri RGB display primaries for LogC, and have ideal saturation placement (especially with v2.2).1 point
-
In his case, I believe he is using a Film Lut intended for LogC. Arri tends to be more rigorously supported by third parties (accurate film conversion). This would be a very different starting point from Arri's R709 Lut. Main/Soft are a nice place to start grading from (without further *technical transforms etc.)1 point
