  1. Two things, the negative and the positive, first I'll go through the negative and then the positive, The Negative I'd like to apologize for my behavior on this website. I have a spare EOSHD account and found my name on google and still attached to this website. I looked at the email message and found out it was about caps lock on the lenses section of this website years ago. I should have not used caps lock and also I should not have shouted at everyone on this website. I'd like to return because I have made some discoveries, and I enjoy being around very bright and intelligent along with extremely practical and very informative folks like yourself. May I please be allowed back on this website and blog and comment and speak to other people? And it has been an honor for me to speak to you all on this website. I apologize and wish to undo anything that can lead to me being banned again. I will try my best to not act defensive and not to take things personally. I apologize to the moderator Jon Pais for being rude. I would also like to if I graduate from Film School, have employment from a master's degree and college with my computer science degree as well as my bachelor's in theater with photography as a minor. The Positive I have taken a photography class at college and passed it with a D, unfortunately I didn't know how to use my DSLR creatively, but I passed. I know now how to use lighting better. I am almost done with having an associate's degree in college. I am taking proper medication for my hyperactiveness and mood swings and I've been through therapy as well. I also have been discussing a lot about filmmaking on the other site, Reddit under the alias, Zack194a on the filmmakers part of Reddit. I think I'm getting a good idea on how to use lighting for video, and I took some recent photographs I have taken with my T2i after learning from Photography class. I learned new things like metering and sunny 15 rule as well as light distance (distance from light affects the image). My college major at this moment is computer science, which as I searched up I hope will get me jobs at many places. I am taking 4 courses in community college at this moment and two of them are A's and the other two are B's. Thank you for reading this. My previous account is Zach Goodwin Here are some of the photos I have taken They were taken on a Canon T2i with an FD lens: 35-105mm, F/3.5 :

  4. So, I now have a Red. Apart from the steep learning curve with Android (trying to switch that bl@@dy assistant off was a challenge) it is a superb device. The 3d (H4V)? It can be totally stunning. Absolutely amazing. Even to the point I flinched when a chopstick popped out of the screen. It can also be ghastly and nauseous. It is critical to get the screen in just right place so sharing the experience is difficult (although I do have two thanks to Jim - titanium to be delivered in due course). No idea if it’s the start of something massive. Will it change cinema or photography? Who knows. But get it right and it is an experience like no other. Definitely worth the wait.

  10. Buh bye! Tomorrow I will start to pull all my videos from Vimeo and transfer them to another platform. That's not because playback performance remains a problem after half a decade. It's because Vimeo cannot even assure the safety of my account any more. It could be deleted at any moment. Read the full article

  11. Here's a new music video I directed, shot, graded and edited recently, for the Finnish punk/thrash metal band RiESA (Loosely translates to Burden). It's in Finnish, but I find it quite interesting even if you're not well versed in Finno-ugric languages. Their new album is a concept album, depicting a protectivist, totalitarian state controlled by a single dictator, and led by fear and propaganda. This gave us a nice opportunity to play with some 1984-like imagery and I'm quite happy with the end result. We did the video in essentially two days, with one day spent building the sets (the whole thing was shot in a basement of a local office) and one day of shoot. The interrogation room was mostly lit with practicals, with fluorescent tubes on the background and some IKEA spotlights lighting the posters. Only cinema lights used were two Aputure LED panels with diffusers used as fill lights. The jail cell was lit with one overhead 300W Fresnel and a 650W fresnel right outside the door to give us some heavy volumetric light. The propaganda scene was done simply with a home theatre video projector playing a video loop I prepared beforehand. I shot the whole video using modern EF lenses but with a Cokin P Pastel filter. It's one of my favourite diffusion filters as it gives a gorgeous bloom effect on light sources without eating too much into microcontrast or fine detail. You can see this if you watch the video in 4K, some of the skin detail is pretty astounding imho. And, not to sound like a Blackmagic fanboy, but I have to say the Ursa Mini delivered in spades, again. It's a fine workhorse. Visually the biggest downside is the youtube compression, which introduces banding, even here where the original image has some added film grain. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, and if you guys have any questions about the production I'm happy to elaborate

  18. You beat me to it Andrew, I was thinking of starting a thread on leaving VIMEO, after 164 video uploads being a paid member since 2011 they send me dmca notices and some threatening messages of this type: > " You have 5 minutes to download your video due to a copyright strike" sent in the dead of night I am in Greece by the way 7 hours time difference from NY. >If you do not wish to contest the strikes but are seeking access to your other videos, we are able to place your account into Temporary Access Mode. This will restore your account in a limited capacity for 72 hours so that you are able archive your videos. However, there are a few caveats: 1) You may only be granted access if you are not filing a formal counter-notification regarding the strikes on your account. 2) We can only provide 72 hours of access. Since this is automated, we cannot extend the access period. Any content that wasn’t downloaded may be lost. 3) The videos will be restored with a restricted privacy setting. They will be locked and only available to you for archival purposes. They will not be publicly available. 4) Per our repeat infringement policy, you may not open any additional Vimeo accounts So for 3 songs that were in some ancient videos long forgotten not embedded anywhere, one of them Private, they actually HOLD HOSTAGE another 160 videos,.I talked to them and they had the courtesy to allow me to download them over a week but i have to sign off any rights over that..i have left the account in Limbo What I see is that they are driving out all the small creators that used to be the paying backbone of Vimeo, they killed the FORUM where voices of members were heard and they are turning VIMEO into a stock footage video gallery (eeeeek). In the meantime WISTIA is way expensive 100 bucks per month, youtube is a temporary solution..

  19. Yes! Zach resurrected! ? Those were the good ol' days (except for that certain Egyptian scammer), things have gotten a bit rotten and turned into drama I feel like lately. We could use some of that oldschool community back (a lot either got banned or decided to stay away on their own). What ever happened with that one exotic lens?

  21. I want to know about that holy grail canon lens. I really need to know. I hope by now you have refused perfection, worked enough on your broken self image. If you had done this you would stop "preparing" or chasing magic bullets because your ego is too defensive to fail. If you are taking computer science you should be coding on some open source project and let others judge your crap until it's ok. Please stop chasing windmills.

if you would imagine for a moment that photography is like food, then i would contend for the rest of your life you can only eat 3 things steak, potato and beans. while you might live a long life, it would be kinda boring having the same stuff everyday. much more interesting is the idea of a smorgasbord occasionally which is what a bunch of lenses gives you

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Just my opinion about focal lengths, in APS-C sensors I consider the 16mm as a must (18mm translates to 28-30mm). Wide enough for wide shots, and tele enough for short portraits (77-80mm is close enough to classic 85mm prime lenses). The 18-55 is 2.8-4f and the 16-55 has no IS. This is a huge disadvantage of the whole system, no real workhorse. I consider my NX 16-50 S 2-2.8f with the very good IS as a much better and versatile solution. The upcoming 16-80mm 4f is maybe the solution but we have to wait and see. If it was 2.8f it would be a must buy.

My photography professor told me that there are only three lenses that you'll need: 85mm F/1.4, a 24-70 F/2.8, and a 70-200 F/2.8.

  27. Would love a future setup where one could use the Mac Mini, with keyboard and mouse and the iPad Pro as screen. Can’t wait for the day when I can switch to using an iPad as my main computer. Right now it feels like the inability to use external hard drives is the main hindrance.

  29. @IronFilm im sorry, i dont mean to be negative, i was painting all night thinking about art lol i guess i feel like the money was spent in these videos on all the nuts and bolts aspects of the production in each case, things like THE CAMERA, the way it moves, lighting, etc., which makes perfect sense, dont get me wrong~! but conceptually, the three are quite similar, and i guesss i dont think that the increased budget made the clips better so i was thinking about that, from a nonconceptual standpoint, looking at the production in technical terms, why is that? and i think its because: ive become so desensitized to watching "amateurish" smartphone videos, presented as being professional, that it has become the new normal edit: yes ofc i see the difference in production quality, im saying its not reflected in overall quality. all three ads suck. if i paid $1000 for the first ad id honestly be like WTF... is this a joke? thats why i said that! its AWFUL. *NOTHING* is good about it... nothing!!!! it stinks on paper: its poorly written, poorly conceived, unoriginal and boring. the acting is awful, that guy sucks, hes not funny... i mean what the hell ? there are THOUSANDS of 6 SECOND VINE VIDEOS that are borderline amazing with a budget of $0 sorry to be such a hard ass (i admit it lol), and i understand the point about production being scaled in various ways due to budget! a great exercise, i think, would be to commission something like this, with the SAME SCRIPT, something that presents some production challenges on the page, then produce the films on wildly different budgets. the low budget film would be forced to be super creative in that regard, while the high budget film would have awesome tools which make the impossible possible, or at least way easier im just thinking out loud! hands up dont shoot! ?

  30. ribcage have m12 lenses that fit the go pro as well. you can buy m12 lenses of ebay for a few dollars but i have read the results don't match up to expectations so it seems your only options are cheap lenses for a few dollars of ebay or much better lenses of peau productions or ribcage for about $100. if you swap out the lenses there is a colour cast that is introduced usually pink with gopro 4 and earlier, that can be removed with a firmware upgrade but that's $50 as well. i have read that peau or ribcage state that there is no colour cast with the 6, i assume that would apply to the seven as well i am unsure about the 5

  31. Oh trust me, I won't be getting rid of my G85 anytime soon. If I get the a7S, I'll be keeping my G85 too for when I need a backup camera or if a gig requires me to shoot in 4K for some reason. I got the Pixco Focal Reducer. Cheap and I have no expectations of it being the best, but someone was selling theirs for around $50, which was actually in my immediate price range as opposed to other speedboosters typically priced $80 or more. Between the focal reducer and the Minolta, I spent around $130 total. A bit pricey for me, but reasonable enough for the moment.

  32. The Febon product works and is about $180. If you look on their YouTube channel you will also find tests of it's latency, which is actually pretty good. There are also some other alternatives that are primarily intended for game capture but also some low cost generic ones. If you google "Android HDMI UVC" then you'll get some options. Basically, if the device is UVC compliant (and your Android device supports UVC) then it will show up as a video input source in monitor apps such as CameraFi .

  33. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2018/10/teardown-of-the-nikon-z7-mirrorless-camera/ Best MILC construction. "This is not marketing department weather resistance. This is engineering department weather resistance. Anything that can be sealed has been sealed. I’m impressed, and I will say for future cut-and-paste blurbs: this is as robustly weather sealed a camera as we’ve ever disassembled. I don’t believe in weather resistance myself. I believe like life; water will find a way. I believe in plastic baggies and rubber bands. I am, however, a great believer in the idea that if you claim to do something, then damn well do it right. This is done right. I’m impressed by the very solid construction of the chassis and IBIS unit. I’m impressed with the neat, modern engineering of the electrical connections. Yes, I’m aware that soldered wires carry electricity, but to me, there’s something reassuring about seeing neat, well thought out, 2018 level engineering. I’m not here to tell you which camera is best to use or has the best performance. I’m just here to say this is a damn well-built camera, the best built mirrorless full-frame camera we’ve taken apart. (For the record, I haven’t torn down a Leica SL.)"

  34. I think in this day and age nobody but the people making money off of it care about a 100K Ad. The iPhone gets the point across just as well as an Arri can. Whole new era.

  35. Well 100K is a huge budget for something like this. But the difference between the 1K and 100K is huge though ? Maybe youre not a tough critic, but maybe suffering a bit from blindness though. Just joking I don't like one the commercials, but this was a real smart marketing idea

  44. I believe the majority of film makers are interested on a place to build their portfolio collection. So with the same money that Vimeo asks, you can share a dedicated server with 2-3 persons and build your portfolio there. Then you can enjoy many benefits like better speeds, reliability and a player of your choice. At least this what i 'll do. Vimeo sucks anyway and DMCA regulations are here to stay. It will only get worse from here.

  47. I had the exact same experience. I shoot weddings for a living and after having 2 strikes with the threat of having everything removed upon the 3rd strike, I opted to go into 2018 uploading everything to YouTube instead. About 2 months ago, I received my 3rd strike on a video I had uploaded 4 years ago and my whole video archive was deleted. I still had to re-upload previous 2017 and 2016 projects to YouTube, but at least all my 2018 files were already safe. I'm just bummed I've put money into Vimeo and they wrecked my shit. Edit: All that to say, heed Andrew's warning, because it can and will happen. It's just a matter of time.

  48. I’ve been messing once again with using my EOSM as a Digital Super 8 camera and I’m pretty happy with the results. For the video below I used the following setup. 6mm f/1.2 Pentax TV lens (paper shim between lens and C mount-EOSM adapter, for infinity focus) Tiffen Digital Diffusion 5 filter (reduces moire artefacts) EOSM with latest ML build 18fps override (exact) 5x zoom 12bit lossless RAW 4:3 aspect 1440 x 1080 i just used the aperture ring for exposure, rather than ND, as it seemed more authentically consumer Super 8. This video has effects applied - FilmConvert’s Super 8 grain; FCPX native “aged film” effect applied very sparingly for jitter and a little dust; a telecine’d Super 8 black frame (keyed over footage). If there is interest, I can post the ungraded footage.
