Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
SR and 4 others reacted to A_Urquhart for a topic
Of course Blackmagic are profitable but at the same time, compared to what the rest of the industry are doing, they are 'pretty much' giving away their products. Pocket4k with Resolve = US$1299 Adobe Premiere/After Effects/Audition subscription for 2 years = USD$1248 So after 2 years....yes, BMD have given you a free camera. ?5 points -
I did a quick skintone and motion test between the two cameras. Will do a more thorough test tomorrow. Let me know thoughts. C200 was donated for the test by Friendly Films! http://www.friendlyfilms.co/4 points

I think it's clog3 that has a higher black point. I found the c200 noisier in the shadows than the UMP! At 800 ASA - was not expecting that. Thanks - yes Canon is much more green. I think yes still UMP has that magenta feel - which isn't bad - but yes also agree UMP has more gradients so much dimensions on the face and secondary highlights and all that - so the image feels more organic yes they both do good things - the c200 is smoother - but yea lacks the three dimensional quality.4 points

Glad to hear that! :-) And you're welcome ? People need to always keep in mind what are they wanting to get out of a short film? The "return" (not a financial return! Ha. No, but rather some kind of "non-financial" return) will almost certainly be near on exactly the same if it is a 4 minute or a 20 minute short film. Yet the cost (in time/money/effort/missed opportunity cost / etc) will be far far higher! Odds of a short film being sold: 0.0000000001%2 points

Legal side of making a movie
Aussie Ash and one other reacted to kaylee for a topic
when I said I was gonna make a youtube miniseries and asked for advice, a bunch of people on here said Uhhh... maybe you should start with something shorter... and ***they were RIGHT*** i ended up making a 4 min film – WAY WAY SMARTER IN EVERY WAY. glad i did. just throwing it out there that being said, the more commercial your project is, the more you need to worry about shit like this. my short is, at best, proof of concept that i can make films – im not trying to directly profit from it in any way financially. of course i have releases, but what are you going to sue me for, 30% of $0? good luck with that my point @salim is that IF YOU MIGHT EVER SELL THIS FILM FOR MONEY, TO ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, YOU NEED RELEASES ON EVERYTHING. that is the professional answer the fear of course being that some a-hole sues you in the future, after your project becomes profitable. if thats a non-issue, then who cares. but you have to make that determination finally, there is the concept in all of this that people should understand the release theyre signing. if they dont its actually worthless in court – not that that comes up, but its like a cop reading you your miranda rights, You have the right to remain silent, etc, and then asking, DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IVE TOLD YOU? a conversation like that means a lot more to me than a piece of paper. when it comes to hardcore IP issues, have a talk with ppl, and get them to sign something. if its an actor or location release for an indie short, dont trip too hard, but at least make the actors sign a standard release2 points -
Yeah just an actor/model release. If you're being anal about it, then location releases too. But many ultra micro budget short films don't even do this. However with it being a 20 minute long short, that is an overly long time investment for a short film (not something I'd recommend!), so I'd suggest you cover your ass with a bit of paperwork.2 points

When Canon gives you 1080P EIS that looks as awful as it gets, GoPro gives you H.265 4K60P with a level of electronic stab never seen before. In fact I would prefer to have this stab in my FF versus Sony/Nikon IBIS, let alone Canon IS. BTW I have the Hero 6, and the stab was very very good but this one is again another league. Well done.1 point -
My new music video showreel!
jagnje reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Hey Everyone, Here’s a bunch of stuff I’ve shot, graded and edited for music videos between 2012-2018. The shots in the reel not done by me are the drone shots. For you camera nerds, I used...... Sony FS700, FS5, FS7, F55, A7SII, A6500. Panasonic GH3, GH5. DJI X3, X5R.1 point -
Well, sort of. I was clearing out some stuff and camera across a flexible mirror with a cutout for a tripod screw. I used to use it a long time ago for positioning cameras on short floor tripods behind goals etc to keep my knees dry and my back in one piece before live view to phones became a thing. Because its such a flexible arm I thought it might be worth having a go of re-utilising it to give a low tech solution for cameras that don't have a forward facing screen and its actually not bad at all. As you can see, you connect it to the camera via a screw into the tripod socket or between the screw of an actual tripod and the camera as I've done here. You then position the mirror at an angle up and behind the camera and it gives you a view of the screen (albeit reversed ) over it. Its hard to convey in a picture but it is actually really effective and more than good enough for anyone wanting to do vlogging on a camera without a forward facing screen. Even cameras with rigid non-moveable screens like this LX100 and the Original BMPCC work fine with it. Anyway, as the forum is, quite understandably, being dominated by discussions of new cameras with ever increasing price tags I thought it might be nice to show that for a few quid we can still stick it to the man and get round their screen restrictions Well, I say a few quid but there is one drawback to this particular low-fi solution and that is that at this point you are probably expecting an eBay or amazon link to buy one but, alas, like all good drawer finds I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of where I got it as a single item (though I know I did and it was less than £5). However, it is available as part of a Polaroid Selfie Stick bundle for £10 so still a cheap solution if you need it. http://amzn.eu/d/3QeMCA51 point

Stabilization on the GoPro 6 was already amazing, but this looks even better. Can't wait to try it out. With ProTune enabled and sharpening turned down the video quality on the GoPro6 was already quite decent with really nice color.1 point

I orders a $h!t ton of batteries... so I have that covered. Ergos... not sure which will win there.. I don't dislike the GH5S. These are both great cameras. I did opt for the battery grip with the Fuji. I like the option for shooting stills in portrait. When it comes to IBIS, I have mixed feelings. Actually, they are not really mixed... I like IBIS for stills, but would prefer not to use if for video. I hate the warping that sometimes happens to footage when shooting video on cameras with IBIS. That said, I have a Ronin S, which should help with camera shake. I would like to see lens control from the Ronin S... I think there is a good chance it will happen for this camera.1 point

I'm also curious, as I'm going from a GH5 to this, and knowing that I'll be losing the GH5's awesome IBIS, I went ahead and got a Feiyu gimbal for the Fuji. This will most likely mean having to rely on the camera's continuous AF as I doubt I'll be able to manually pull focus on it while gimbal'd-up. So curious to see how it does.1 point -

Well its arrived and it works a treat in my initial test with a MacBookPro Both drives show up without any messing about and copying a test 2 gig backwards and forwards between them is just under 10 seconds each way. For the £12.99 I paid for it off Amazon its a bargain just as a Cfast reader even without the extra SATA trick it has. Next step is to lash it to a SBC to make it standalone. I have the whiff of epoxy in my nostrils....1 point

Watch these in anything but Firefox (otherwise I love that browser). Ideally, watch in chrome with the RGB dev fix 'The Lane' is great: This one is V1: The interview portion: V1 Era: (While these often reflect earlier versions, and non-standard use in some cases, they stick out in my mind as having some really neat shots. 'Always Already' is the reference example, with Firecrest NDs for Day, and ensured correct post workflow)1 point

Ok, tested the Viltrox EF-FX adapter in daylight today. When shooting in manual everything is ok. When in aperture priority it gives you aperture shatter. Quite normal on Fuji cameras and nothing to worry about. But.. with EF motors it can get loud. Regarding AF in daylight. I only have primes btw so no zoooms tested. Its all single point. Tracking works but only so and so. STILLS AF 28mm f1.8: Fast. Faster than a native 56mm but slower than the f2 WRs. 50mm f1.8 STM: Lightning fast. I cant compare but as fast or maybe even faster than a native f2 WR lens. 85mm f1.8: Decent, not the fastest lens so I can give it a B-. 200mm f2.8: Ok.. at best.. might be a deal breaker since I love that lens so much. Video AF 28mm f1.8: Sucks! 50mm f1.8 STM: Sucks! 85mm f1.8: Sucks! 200mm f2.8: Sucks!1 point -

Exactly! Even if they feel they don't have anything (sad! But oh well) to put in a new D3x00 they still feel compelled to update it to a "new" model! As those Christmas buyers want to buy the "latest" DSLR! Can't have an "old" camera competing against the latest shiny new Rebel from Canon! And yes, gives them an excuse to discount their "old" model! So those extreme bargain hunters have something to latch onto as well. I'll be disappointed though if their next D5x00 doesn't get 4K! Even if just a basic 4K mode like in the D75001 point -
My fingers are crossed they're just two cameras with two different sensor resolutions, with no surprising crippling of the Z6. I don't think Nikon has done much of the way in "surprise crippling" have they? Look at the D5 vs D500, kinda is two cameras but with different sensors in it. They didn't really hold back on the D500 did they? And that is what I really want to see, a DX mirrorless! Hopefully comes out this summer (or "winter" as you guys call it), as I'd still probably have to wait another 6 months after then for grey market prices to soften. When the cyclist disappeared between those leaves but it stayed in focus... whoa1 point

Yes, Panasonic bullied me back in grade school... but he was known as Sonic back then but it left a horrendous memory deep inside my psyche and the only way for me to get my dignity back is to make earth shattering inquiries about the GH5... But I never said everybody is dumping their GH5. I said a lot of people seem to be moving onto other cameras. I also questioned if Panasonic makes or made a profit on the GH5. We recently learned that Olympus loses money on every camera they sell in the US. We also know that Olympus sells more cameras than Panasonic... so... Just a conversation online. I am actually thinking about buying a GH5, so I have no ill will or intention.1 point -
Fujisung NX2? Today it is possible to assume that, Samsung has closed the camera department because of the few sales related to its brand not fully associated with the professional camera industry. Today it is paradoxical to think that the sales success of the Fuji or Panasonic cameras may be due to the Samsung sensor brand preferred by professionals in the sector to that of Sony. At this point I ask someone to tell Fuji to add the Samsung DR picture profile to the X-T3 camera of which I and many Samsung users are very satisfied.1 point

Would be great, but actually wouldn't bother with the processing I've seen in the X-T3 clips so far that much. The sharpening in the Z6 clip is causing the terrible artifacts we see in the new clip - which has some really nice compositions btw. If it can be turned off, the camera would be great for video work, especially with something like the Ninja V attached.1 point

Okay, here is a true story. Back in 2015 Samsung spent enormous resources on pushing their new NX camera. They for example offered workshops with star photographers in important markets, here in Germany it was Jim Rakete ( in the US I think Alex Webb among others) who shot a series about the music scene in Hamburg on the camera and did a little exhibition along with a workshop for I think something along the line of 20 young photographers who needless to say got a free a camera and some lenses in exchange for posting a bunch of pictures in a visual diary created as a marketing tool by the agency doing the promotional work for the camera. I am not a photographer but a filmmaker and found the video specs of the camera to be quiet exciting. So I asked the agency wether I could have one as well. To my surprise they agreed and loaned me a free camera, plus a whole set of lenses six month for free, with the option for another additional three month if required. Surprised about the generous offer, the agency explained to me, that Samsung had such a high degree of vertical integration, meaning they were able to build the whole camera in-house, that for them cameras were much cheaper to produce than for most competitors. So they did not really thinks twice, when it came to giving away free cameras or loaning them for longer periods of time. Plus they aggressively were pursuing marketshare and had deep pockets. I got the camera and the lenses, shot some stuff on it and got an invitation to lunch from the agency, around late August 2015. The meeting was among other things about a new Samsung full frame camera that was supposed to come out in early 2016. Originally the plan was to release the camera for x-mas 2015 and according to the agency people it was completely ready and in existence, they just had it delayed to devise a better way to market it. The camera, in the words of agency reps, was targeted at the A7 / A7S market and having had a good response from filmmakers for the NX1, they planned on focusing much more on its filmshooting abilities for marketing. So I was asked wether I`d be interested to be among the people to shoot something on the camera before its scheduled release in early 2016. I said sure and we agreed to meet again later that year. Anyway about a month or so after our last meeting, Samsung decided to cut its loses and I had to return the NX1 and the lenses and never heard again from the agency. Since Samsung already had working prototypes for FF cameras with a strong focus on video featuresin 2015, I would not be surprised if those would now see the light of day under a different brand.1 point
