Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

What a shame. Who are these "deep state" BMD insiders that are here pushing an agenda ? Myself and Hook. Who else ? What do you guys think, there's a plot and conspiracy ? You guys don't wat these contributions I guess ? I'm here because I've been a member here for years and I'm on many camera forums and this is just another one I like to read and contribute to where I can. I want to know where all the clowns that were saying on this thread that the world was going to end because BMD didn't have any footage out yet and that definitely meant something was very wrong and the shipping date would be missed. All I've seen so far is that a planned marketing campaign by BMD that has gone off the way they intended. They commissioned some actual filmmakers (not bloggers or camera reviewers) that make certain types of film (natural history, action sports, nature) to make some films and then they released them and the camera originals. Then they gave some cameras, complete with some boxes as if they were new to some secondary users, and whilst having them also under NDA, got them to shoot some test footage and allowed some of them to release that footage. Again. Not reviewers. Not bloggers. About a thousand reviewers and camera jockeys have done a bunch of made up comparisons and VLOGS based on existing footage. (hey I love seeing my footage being butchered by grading nerds) Think about it. No blogger or reviewer ANYWHERE has gotten a functioning camera to shoot with as far as I can tell. Because that's not what BMD want to do with their marketing of this camera. This isjust marketing 101. They need people using the cameras in the many difference specific sectors of the market will use the camera. Camera reviews aren't part of that plan. (though it hasn't stopped people doing it based on existing footage) Until it's shipping, it's their choice to give it to whomever they want. I'm tired of this entitled bullshit. I recently left a few facebook groups I was on for this camera, and I'm doing the same here. Frankly it's juvenile and I don't need the agro I sure hate explaining what should be obvious. There's no slight. BMD have a marketing department and they have a plan and it doesn't involve forums, bloggers or camera reviewers. That's not a snub, that's just them marketing the product in the way that they see fit. JB22 points -

Andrew, the comments about grading weren’t intended for you specifically. Read the post. I was talking in generalities about recent facebook groups I’d left and a similar entitled tone here. It was not a personal attack but you chose to take it that way. Cmon, I shoot these shots for BMD for exactly this purpose. To be downloaded and graded. If I was truly precious about it I wouldn’t do it again and again would I ? You’re throwing a tantrum, publicly, because you dind’t get an invite to a BMD event that is seems like few even knew about. Somehow you think that’s got something to do with me so you went and wrote a post about me. A really lovely piece too. I’ve said it already a thousand times. I don’t work for them. I don’t have that much to do with them day to day. Last contact I had with anyone at BMD was weeks ago. It’s not my job to make sure YOU get some attention from them. That’s on you to make that case. And by the way, this kind of childish unprofessional behaviour is exactly the kind of reason any company would think twice about working with you. Instead, you launch a highly personal assasination blog post as well as numerous personal attacks because I dared to try and explain that to you in a way that you thought wasn’t deferential enough ? You don’t do this for free. You sell something. I don’t but you actually do. Having traffic come to this site means you have a greater chance of selling something. You sell LUT’s and you sell guides and you use the traffic here to do so. So don’t pretend all this free traffic is somehow a favour to BMD and free publicity. I didn’t even see the post you made about the BMD footage till your personal attack on me, but I noticed when I read your BMD post you’re mixing in a bunch of references to LUT’s you’re trying to flog. How about this... Delete every single post of mine. All the IP that I’ve posted and shared on this forum? All those posts where I’ve shared my knowledge and experience. Go ahead and put your money where your mouth is. JB12 points -

I don’t actually work for Blackmagic. It’s not my job to make you happy or smooth anything over when you have an issue with them not inviting you to an event. It’s not my job to pander to anyone. I don’t answer to BMD. Just like you I’m an independent opinion and my opinion doesn’t reflect Blackmagic’s views. I think you’re misunderstand why I’m here. Nice job on the personal attack Andrew. Sorry to hear that, makes you realise what's really important! Very true and it's so relentless, there's a new temptation around the corner every few weeks. Easy to get hooked. These companies are spending millions on getting us hooked. Just like us, they're never satisfied either. It's like in home audio... Eventually you will end up with an end-game, which is perhaps 5 or 10% better than what you had mid-way through the spending spree. I am going to review the E-M10 III next. $500 camera. I'm going to use that instead of the Pocket 4K, forget raw. I'm going to go out, have fun with strange Russian lenses, and appreciate how short life is and how the time is better spent with family than with disposable consumer goods.8 points -

Well as an old turd that has done a lot more stuff than I have deserved, or ought to have, and when I look back at it 75% of it was a total F ing waste of time family wise, stress wise, money wise, on and on. A persons life goes fast as hell, and you never know when you are going to die, or one of your family dies, like my first wife at a young age of cancer did. Hey it happens, but to go thorough all the stress, the shit you put up with in doing it, for really no real gain is pretty disheartening when you look back on it I can tell you that. You might as well live on a sailboat out on a river or the ocean, in a cabin in the woods and just sit back and enjoy life with not a lot of commitments. All those accomplishments don't amount to shit when you get divorced, have a heart attack, or wake up one day and your kids are all grown, and it's like man did I waste half my life for What! I know some of you people make a living doing this stuff, and a hell of a lot as just a hobby. I can see a trend here now in the Video industry that there is NEVER going to be an end to a better toy next year. It is like Smartphones now, You have to have the latest and greatest, and man in the video industry that amounts to a Hell of a lot of money. Tons of money. Is it really worth it. It all goes back to my first sentence. Is it worth all the bullshit? I bet it's not. I am not going to buy anything! I will use what I got, good or bad. A new camera won't make me that much better.8 points -

This honestly doesn't reflect well on anybody, least of all yourself. Freezing the thread for a cool-off was a good idea. My advice (unsolicited I know!) would be to take that down for a similar period and then consider if you really want it out there. It comes off as sour grapes, and just isn't a smart response.6 points -

Thanks Karim And Dan, yes webrunner is right. It's a cultish following around the Pocket camera. For example, I understand that Facebook targets each post to a subset of my followers on the EOSHD Facebook Page, depending on the subject. It's automatic, I don't have any control over it. But a lot of pitchforks came out for me today on Facebook which confused me because EOSHD supporters, followers and friends don't usually behave like that.... I know why this time was different, because Facebook had targeted a Blackmagic article at the Blackmagic hardcore fanatics and they didn't like what I had to say. As for typical BM roll out, yes it is. Trade shows have less meaning to everybody outside the bubble. Most customers don't want to be teased for half a year or even more before they can get the damn camera in their hands. Blackmagic should stop syncing their announcements to NAB and instead put the announcement out a week before they start shipping. The irony is, here I am feeling upset about being passed over for a camera in my hands... with a hardcore of Blackmagic users saying "what a crybaby EOSHD is" when at the last few camera launches, those very same people were moaning about not having a camera in their hands, because it's late or whatever. At the end of the day, I reflect on the course this thread just took and I regret it. I stand by my hurt over the camera and snub, but I regret what's happened. Take what you read from everyone on forums with a pinch of salt including even yourself whilst saying it! And including me. I am not myself on the internet sometimes, nobody is. The internet is a weird simulation which is causing issues in real society across the globe all the time. It's not real life, it's a machine-assisted facsimile of it. John Brawley and I would not have behaved the same in real life. The internet is an argument generator and a distorted mirror and I might indeed have to shortly go to the pub and have a stiff drink.5 points -

I am finding this thread terribly juvenile and just an overreaction by all parties concerned. It was fine till we were discussing the camera. Let's stick to the camera and keep other things out of it.5 points -
Mr. Reid, I don't know you and I won't pretend to understand what you are going through, so please do not take this statement the wrong way. However, when you say you are 'feeling really quite down', do you think that your current mental wellbeing is served by continuing to have this discussion? By arguing (no matter how justified) with people on these forums, your blog and Facebook page (all three of which you seem to hold very dear and personal, something which I understand). In my opinion you absolutely did the right thing by locking up this thread temporarily, and my advice to you would be to do it again. Why revel in this energy-consuming discussion? I get that you're dissapointed and feel sleighted by Blackmagic's decision no to hand you the camera for early review, something only exacerbated by the fact that the event was in your own home-time. That must have honestly felt like shit. Nonetheless, scratching the wound left by this event (by returning to the discussion over and over again on these forums) might feel satisfying in the short-term, but it is absolutely not conducive to it healing. I suspect you are not gaining any longterm insight or satisfaction by having this discussion in this manner, and even worse, you might be worsening you're already crummy mood because you are now infecting this website with a discussion that 1) will make it harder to take back anything you say in anger because it is now done in a very public way, and 2) taints your very personal project with a negativity that you probably don't want in your life. Finally, in your anger you might end up taking actions or saying things that will end up doing damage to this project (eoshd.com) which you obviously hold so dear to you. My advice (but hey, who am I) to you would be to give yourself a break - delete the blogpost you made, lock this thread and go for a walk/watch a movie/have a nice dinner with friends. Seriously do anything else for a while instead of having this situation drag you down. When you come back, delete this entire tangent and have this thread be about the Pocket 4K again. If you find Blackmagic's answer to your emails not satisfactory in the future, just don't cover them anymore if it makes you feel better. I just don't believe it is conducive to your wellbeing by dragging the argument into the public (and very ill-informed) sphere. Hope that all makes sense. Thank you for your passion and thanks for hosting this site.5 points

Here is Panasonic's UK HQ, and me second from right. Panasonic do it right. A tech related feedback session and a friendly meet-up. No wining and dining PR stunts in gin bars. On the table is a pre-production GH5S. Dave at Red Shark was also at the event and I met Holden, the main distributor for Blackmagic in the UK. All of them friendly people. Receptive to technical collaboration and supportive of the blog. All I expected from Blackmagic in the 5 months since NAB was a "hello". The Manchester event would have been nice to go to. I have not even seen the Pocket 4K in person yet, and Blackmagic's Patrick in PR knows this full well. John's response on here was COLD and dismissive. To him I'm just another idiot blogger. Just another blog. And you guys are just nerds to him, who cannot grade. I think it's disgraceful.5 points -

Andrew, you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Blackmagic really don't owe you anything for any 'free publicity'. Their Pocket 4k has started a frenzy among the camera world stirring up conversation and leading people to discuss it on forums, maybe you owe Blackmagic for making your site and this thread so popular? Maybe you owe all of your forum members here for contributing all their content here and making this site popular. Maybe you owe John Brawley for his contributions, I know I read this thread mainly because of his input and presence here...... Silly, I know, but the tantrum you seem to be throwing could also be seen as a bit silly too. Seems like nothing really new came from the event and maybe BM didn't think you would want to do an unboxing video...? Your reaction here only serves to diminish your character and reputation and by snubbing the camera based on you not receiving a pre prod version for testing or not being invited to one event. It might also suggest that you can be easily bought which is not what most people want out of an online reviewer. Who knows, maybe a marketing person at BM didn't think it appropriate to invite someone who seems brand focused by being call EOSHD? There are so many reasons why you may have not received an invite.... Just my 2c.5 points -

This is the post what clearly explains why you dont get invites to any brand anymore. Childish. John's post are perfectly reasonable, Blackmagic dont want comparisons against other cameras, they want to provide enjoyable images and emotions with the camera. Have you see the parachute footage from Eos R? It's all about smiling people enjoying the moment in the sunset. You want to capture the feeling, and we can provide you a tool for that, this is the message. Not low light noise comparisons.4 points -

It's not a good idea to judge banding by youtube footage. If I apply more contrast to the youtube frame to show banding, this is what I get: Now if I go to vimeo and download the original ungraded version, and apply about the same contrast, this is what I get: And the original ungraded version uploaded to vimeo is still 8bit! In 10bit you will have even less banding.4 points -
Think you're overreacting to all of this. Dunno mate, you're just seeing things that aren't there. I am afraid too that you're quite right. That's the way the game is played right now I'm afraid. But do you want to play ball and get in or do you want to shout from the sidelines? That's really up to you. Except... there was no such message. Companies are big... positions change... networks fade and re-establish. You want to be on the radar? You better make sure you're flying through their airspace making waves big enough to get picked up. It's a sea of content creators, filmmakers, blogs and forums out there. They can't keep tabs and stats on all and invite like the top 10 that come out of that. It's like a birthday party. I invite the people I've gotten to know well. Why would they go about it any differently? They're not mindreaders. You can't expect them to know what you want unless you make that clear to them. And how should they have known that you are back in the UK. I thought you were in Berlin as well, myself. Maybe if you shot them a message now making a case for yourself they'd be supercool to still give you one early. But instead you make up your mind about how they think about you and EOSHD and throw this unnecessary tantrum. Boycotting their products. Threatening to close the forum. Like... are you having a midlife crisis mate? Nobody is an enemy here. Why can't we just all get along, talk this over and sort this out like adults? This has nothing to do with not appreciating you or what you've done with the site and for the community. The GH2 Hack Vault and stuff back in the day got me hooked. The GH4 and anamorphic guides were great. Your blog posts... your forum comments. I might not agree with everything, but I've always respected what you did. This is a safe place for people of all kind of backgrounds and skill levels, it's great to see the comradery, playful banter and knowledge displayed. And I am in fact grateful for that and for you keeping that alive. But that's got zero to do with not being invited to a hands-on event. C'mon.4 points

I inserted myself into the discussion last night when I probably shouldn’t have, but I do stand by my opinion that Andrew should have been invited to the Manchester event. I, for one, never felt that John Brawley was to blame for this and feel that most people on this site have been very thankful for his contributions, not just about info on the upcoming camera but his openness about the inner workings of a Hollywood set and his methods of shooting. But the disdain displayed to Andrew in this thread is mind boggling. I don’t always agree with him, but the man has wholeheartedly opened his craft and home to a countless amount of strangers for free. There is not one other site in the video community that is completely ad free and he rarely asks for a thank you. I can only imagine the cost it is to upkeep this site. I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit that I find him infuriating at times, but I would never question his devotion to his craft and his readers. With that being said, I feel JB’s reply to the events was unnecessarily rude. Perhaps there was a breakdown in communication as Andrew has already stated but for every person that felt Andrew could have handled the snub differently, they should equally admit that JB could have handled his response differently as well. BM was born on the backs of hobbyists and enthusiasts. We paid for the R&D of the Ursa Pro with every Pocket or Micro we bought. As much as we appreciate their inexpensive cinema cameras, they are only available because we decide to purchase them... it’s like a television show, it only exists at the behest of its viewers. But in the end, they are both artists and artists are passionate, honest and sensitive people... they must be to put themselves and their work out into the world for scrutiny.3 points

@John Brawley, I've been very grateful for your posts and have watched and enjoyed quite a bit of your work before even realizing that you were the DP (Lake Mungo is genuinely one of my favorite movies of the last decade). With that said, that post really bummed me out and felt pretty condescending. If you disagree with Andrew that's fine, discuss it with him. As I said, I personally wouldn't feel the way he does. But he's entitled to feel disappointed that BMD didn't invite him to check out the camera, especially when they held the event just minutes away. Heck, the fact that he's so interested in the camera should be seen by BMD as a good thing! Are they obligated to invite him, or anyone? No. But would it be a nice gesture and courtesy to give someone that gave BMD their time and energy when BMD was just starting out with their camera lines an opportunity to check it out? Especially when their ambassadors / employee use the forum? Even if you do feel like he is overreacting, surely you can put yourself in his shoes?3 points -

I can't help but feel a bit of a chill in the air. These are your customers you're talking to John and fellow filmmakers. You've basically just labelled me a non-shooter/blogger and the rest of us a bunch of grading nerds who butcher your footage. Call me "entitled" all you like but I've worked fucking hard on this blog and building a community, at the same time as being a freelance cinematographer in Berlin making my OWN stuff happen rather than working for clients. I have an artistic eye and technical expertise, I do shoot, I am not just a "camera reviewer" pedant who tests and verifies a specs sheet. What's more, I am (or was) a loyal Blackmagic customer. I don't see much appreciation for that or for EOSHD in what you've posted above. You basically imply I'm an entitled nerd who should be glad I've even got a REAL DP on the forum. Hardly much support from you either then. Since I started EOSHD, I've had just very occasional encouragement from people in the film industry. Doesn't happen very much. Reflects badly on the industry. But not everyone is like this. Speaking of the more positive responses I've had from people in the film industry, there's Rodney Charters. Bought my GH2 book. He sent me an email and we talked about the camera. A small thing but he had a genuine need for the book and we helped each-other out. Made a young filmmaker and anamorphic shooter feel good about all the long hours he was putting into EOSHD and all the Berlin projects at that time. It shows a generosity of spirit. You should just be honest. You are here to sell a Pocket 4K camera. You don't give a shit about what I shoot, or what I write. I am just a guy hosting your posts.3 points -
Though honestly, maybe... be better at networking? Don't have to go as far as these self-proclaimed YouTube reviewers that are mostly asslickers. But for sure keep tabs, keep on the radar. I'm not gonna get upset if I'm not invited to Timmy's birthday party and refuse a treat when he does a round of treats in class because of it. That's a little petty. That's just the industry, I mean... must not be the only company not inviting you to these hands-on events. Seems Kai was in London for the Canon EOS-R event... were you there as well? Got invited at all? It's like skipping dinner as a protest because earlier on you weren't allowed to eat a cookie. A bit unnecessarily stubborn. Was only 500 euros but will be interesting to compare to the GH5 considering the big price difference. If it helps out those searching for something really good in the midst of an era of pushing prices up and going high-end, then job done. Unlike the GX9 it doesn't have any extra crop in 4K. Full width M43 2x crop and 1.28x crop with Speed Booster XL. Wow....everybody got a BMP4K except Andrew, I do understand Andrew´s feelings, they were morally forced to invite him to the Manchester event after all the propaganda Andrew has made during the years for BM products......and BY FREE!!!!!! Really a bad move from BM, well, but anyway this is probably a great oppotunity, may be now Andrew could get a Canon-R instead and give us the review we are all waiting for that new baby... At the end, I think Andrew should stop promoting some times with so much passion some Brands that never recognise all his hard work, I remember BM sitting with NFS to explain their Camera in a very promotional Video, if they had the time to do that, at least they should have invited Andrew to Manchester event.....well, it is what it is, let´s just continue with this forum which is by far the best out there....and the only one honest!!!!!2 points -
So we're now publicly shaming people and companies because the host of one of our favorite internet forums didn't get invited to a camera test event that he had no natural entitlement to be at (besides it being a good publicity opportunity for BMD)? While I can understand the disappointment of Andrew, I think the behavior displayed here will probably reduce future chances regarding any brands' involvements even more. Not exactly professional at all. Why is this forum always so god damn hostile?! I can't judge if John Brawley is a nice person or not because I don't know him, but I found it rather surprising he was even willing to fight it out with some of us arm chair experts. People here compare his behavior to how Roger Deakins behaves on his forum. Well, I have never seen the people on Deakins' forum question what he says all the time so I think it is not too surprising that eventually there might be rash answers. I find this really disappointing all in all. This is a forum I really enjoy(ed) to read a lot but the tone is often so negative, aggressive and absolute. I already took some time off the forum a while ago and now I often starting writing posts/replies but then stop and decide not to post at all because the internet tough guy behavior here. Like in all controversial threads, I guess it's again only a question of time for people who disagree to get banned?2 points

I'd recommend Andrew you just write them a polite note saying "hey, I'd like to get a hands on demo of the BMPCC4K soon in the near future for a preview on my site EOSHD", I'm bet they're very likely to reply back with "sure!" and let you come down to have a play around with it for a couple of hours at their HQ. You never know until you just ask. As it very likely was just an honest mistake to exclude you. Probably the event was organized by clueless marketing folks who wouldn't recognise an appropriate filmmaking expert if it was thrown at them, and instead invited portrait photographers and smartphone reviewers. Because they're all the same to them. Edit: ah never mind, I caught up and read the other posts which came later on.2 points

Do people go around commenting on other things they wont buy, like a particular dishwasher that doesn't tick all their boxes? Or is it just a camera thing?2 points -

Despite you continuing to delete my comments I'll continue...... Because although you may not be able to see it, in the mood you are in, I am trying to help you. I work as a freelancer in the broadcast industry as well as film industry. When it comes to Broadcast... while I'm not the best out there at what I do, I know plenty of freelancers that get work over me despite producers preferring my work. Do you know why they get work over me? It's because they do send those emails (the one you wrote in the childish voice) and it's because they do actively hound the bookings people in the office. I've never been one to do that and it sounds like you haven't either. Sometimes it's not about who's the best but who's been the most persistent at forming relationships with others in the industry. I've never been good at marketing myself or ringing up the people doing the hiring asking for work in the same way that it sounds like you don't do that with camera manufacturers. It means that even though producers tell me I might do a better job of something than the next person, I don't always get the call for work because the communication between producers and those booking crew is not always there. In the same way that while you may have relationships with technical people at BM, the PR people might not get the info. Do what you do bacause you enjoy it. If you hate this forum, then yes, stop it or pass it on to someone else. If you still enjoy this forum, if you still enjoy doing reviews, then don't let this one instance ruin everything else.2 points

Maybe you could "share what you know" in the manner a real DP like Roger Deakins does on his forum... without belittling people. Was just thinking it would have been a lot nicer to get a reply like "hello Andrew. We appreciate your work...BMD is sorry for not inviting you to the meet-up in your home town". The end. In fact, would be your first "hello" to me in all 2 years you have been posting your Blackmagic propaganda on my forum. No empathy, and zero appreciation.1 point -
