  1. Wow... a couple of the most helpful and talented members (squig and kidzrevil) banned within a few days of one another for having an opinion... that’s a shame.

  2. Hello! I'd like to share with you my setup. It is very simple to do, nevertheless I've spent about a $1000 to try different ways and ideas. I end up with a setup which costs about $200-300. It is a fully electronic dual follow focus system, controlled by Arduino Nano with two servos and powered by 2 3.7 Li-ion 4800 mAh batteries. The price very much depends on motors and potentiometers you choose. You can calibrate it with any lens. Still it is a bit noisy and I'd like to make a wireless version as well plus add a monitor and a possibility to store more than one lens in its memory. VIDEO

  3. I don't think Panasonic should jump on the FF bandwagon. I think their smaller sensor is their unique selling point. The GH5s sensor has proven you can squeeze high iso/low noise performance out of a smaller sensor and this is only the beginning really. I think the smaller sensor allows them to push video tech faster - like the GH5 have 4k60p, who knows what is capable in the GH6 but I think the FF cameras will always be playing catch up to the smaller sensors cameras in that regard simply because they can process that information faster. Chuck a speedbooster on and problem solved. I'm shooting with a GH5/speedbooster XL and a new A7iii with mc-11 - both using my canon L glass. Much prefer the GH5 for video. that 10bit is amazing. What Panasonic should be doing is keeping their m43 mount cause there is some amazing compact glass for it but do what JVC did and chuck a Super 35 sensor in there. Imagine that with a speedbooster. All the benefits of a faster, smaller sensor but full frame look.

  4. So let me get this straight....... you're all up in arms over free speech and the trigger happy trial by words, yet you ban a couple of solid members for their opinions?!?! Opinions that were expressed with conviction, but politely?! Certainly more politely than any of your retorts. My god the hypocrisy is mind boggling. Infuriating even. THAT'S more offensive to me than anything in this thread. I've seen this time and time again with internet debates. Come in all spitting fire. Rebutals ensue. Make up some twisted justification about "respect" and then ban them rather than engage in conversation? Frankly, that is a level of wimpiness that I cannot comprehend. Stand by your words, man. I mean, they're only words right? Or am I banned now?

  7. @Andrew Reid see the personal attack was unneccessary cause I guess both me & disney couldn’t separate the art from the artist. I will never stoop as low as you have shown you are willing to go in this thread nor do you personal attacks on myself and others change my opinion about myself or the other posters in the forum. You would think you’re on trial w/ Gunn the way you are acting right now. You don’t have to be a dick to get your point across you know ? Especially since no one called YOU a pedo sympathizer we’re just saying those kind of jokes aren’t worth defending because they are tasteless and offensive. You speak about the bar being lowered but look at your responses *shrug* peace

  8. I must take it at face value I am afraid!! Kids R Evil! You think kids are evil. Clearly. I am OuTRAGEd. You BETTER delete your past tweets!! ? Is there? Edgy jokes don't violate criminal law. Fact. Do you think I am in a Larry David sitcom or something? I do understand social etiquette.... in real life. On the internet it doesn't work the same way. In real life, we don't do things like we do on Twitter. Twitter isn't a real life dinner date - do you think it is?! You have laws that protect people from jokes? Name one. And finally a reminder for late comers to the topic... I am not defending the content of his jokes at all. Easy to confuse, as I said from the beginning. No - I am defending James Gunn, the human being... and the artistic license we have to make jokes, sometimes shit ones, free speech, a huge filmmaking talent, the concept of edgy humour, jokes on twitter, and most of all the ability to grow as a person in the course of 10 years and not to have past errors hung around your neck for all eternity with no ability to move on from the past... Gunn stopped making stupid tasteless jokes a long, long time ago. Stephen Fry articulates it far better than I ever could... Go to 10m:00sec "Self pity is the ugliest emotion"

  9. New topic, as this is quite a separate take and subject, to the original thread (which crashed and burned in so much shock / horror) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/firing-james-gunn-disney-hurts-all-hollywood-1129691 Says the respected journal: "A creative industry requires artists like the 'Guardians' director who push boundaries, make (offensive) mistakes and evolve, writes Hollywood Reporter columnist Marc Bernardin...“To demand that every artist who works for you to have never had a past...is asking for people who will make boring art.” Hopefully we can have a sensible debate this time...But please do read that article first. It's GOOD.

  10. I need a cheap fluidhead that can handle a eos m with máx 70-200 lens and a nikon d800 with the same lens. Ideally it would be cheap (150€ ), light and small. I would like to be able to do precise movements. Years ago I bought a manfrotto 500 something and it would always ruin the shot if I let go of the handle.

  11. Superb director. But apparently people die "due to jokes" now https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44912175 It's pretty dangerous to defend Gunn though. given the current climate. Now I'm starting to realise why the buffoon wreaker Trump won the election. People are genuinely sick of the hysterical PC climate and the impact it has on real lives, yours and ours careers, and our art /freedom of expression.

  12. If Canikon knock it out of the park I don't see why anyone would consider m4/3 anymore. The Gh5 and Em1 II are already large cameras and there isn't so much to be gained in terms of size unless you are talking about telephoto lenses. The new nikon mirrorless looks to be diminutive in size so I don't think it will be too much of a consideration for people. I think panisonic and olympus either go full frame or die a slow death. Especially with full frame cameras dropping in price. We are seeing the same problem with the fuji and the xh1, being in practical terms more expensive than the a7iii. The thing with fuji is that their lenses are quite expensive, especially considering they are apsc lenses. For example, their 100-400 is priced equivalently to canon's superior and pro level 100-400. Their range at the long end isn't good either.

  13. The latest development with ML and the EOSM is that one can shoot raw with the full height of the sensor -- and it looks fairly clean (minimal moire/aliasing). The resolution is 1736x1120, and I think that the pixels are binned 3x3. Here's @Alpicat's test at 14-bit lossless raw: Here are the instructions on how to setup the EOSM in this new crop/resolution.

  14. This! I opted for the MFT system with the GH2 back in the day because I would be able to keep lenses small (which is the real thing that keeps a camera set-up compact). Of course you can frankenrig things up when the situation asks for it. Of course we haven't exactly been wow-ed by the sensor performance throughout the years. The GH4 you'd still have a hard time pushing past ISO800, but as you said, since we've seen leaps in improvement, mostly in terms of high ISO noise performance and color. Dynamic range with V-Log L and HLG has gained a slight advantage, but that's really the area where it still needs a bit of a way to go. I'm confident however that the next generation will leave little to complain about on a sensor performance level. You could argue that they need to change tactics when it comes to C-AF, but that's just not much of a dealbreaker to me personally. But it's of course a missed oppertunity getting people on board who do think it is. And Panasonic/Olympus just know how to make epic camera bodies. Both GH5 series cameras and the E-M1mkII have a weathersealed grippy camera body, vari-angle touchscreen, nice menus, tons of customization, dual cardslots, full audio interface, awesome batterylife etc, to me it honestly doesn't get much better than that. And again, great lens ecosystem to go with it with a wild range of lenses in all sorts of sizes and quality for all sorts of budgets (same actually for the camera models; in comparison: Sony has seen 2 generations of mirrorless APS-C where there was just the 1 body (and not without issues)). Back to the topic title. The DSLR market is dying. All they need to do is take their APS-C/FF line-up, drop the mirror and OVF and stick on a new mount. Of course, mirrorless is also greatly related to innovation, so IBIS, 4K60p, LOG, elaborate focus & exposure aids and overlays are definitely the way to go here. But in essence, they aren't really changing their game too much, it's just about ditching traditional DSLR for mirrorless. When it comes down to Panasonic/Olympus, they're already doing mirrorless and I'd even go to say that they do it well. I agree that the smaller sensor is a USP of the system and do not think them jumping FF as well needs to be a thing. But of course, the more options the better...

  16. So that guy claiming to shoot at 400 ISO gives you a cleaner more malleable image. Yes, although he doesn't do a good job of explaining WHY it gives you a cleaner and more malleable image. The Ursa Mini Pro is always running at 800 ISO and that's the only real ISO setting. Period. All of the other ISO settings are "fake" similar to the extended ISO ranges found on a lot of dslr cameras. So, when you expose for 400 ISO it's the equivalent of overexposing by 1 stop at 800 ISO and pushing it down in the grade. If you convert your prores film gamut into xyz linear (bypassing the bias of the log curve) and gain the image, you get the same result as changing exposure/iso in the raw controls. When you do that, you get 1 extra stop of shadow detail due to overexposing and you lose one in the highlights. Also one of the side effects of exposing for 400 ISO is that you can push the image up to 1 stop in post and still get the no significant increase in noise level because you would now be back at the native ISO of 800. So in run/gun scenarios, 400ISO gives you a safety net to accidentally underexpose by up to 1 stop with no consequences. It's a lot harder to tell if an image is underexposed rather than overexposed and clearly clipped.

  17. Nikon have a rare opportunity here to sway hybrid video users with no video line to protect. If they manage to get decent (PDAF) video autofocus, a beefy (10-bit) codec or better yet raw with something like N-Log, i think a lot of heads may be tempted to switch. I kind of doubt we'll get all that cuz Nikon seems to always lag behind in video dept but who knows they might pull a Fuji and all of a sudden pack video centric specs. The new sub F/1 primes is also pretty enticing imo and could give an edge over Sony/Nikon offerings, especially if priced smartly..

  18. I prefer the a7III for stills as well, the AF is better in every situation I've encountered - especially fast action and low light. For stills - in terms of detail - there's very little difference, but the a7III has a significant edge in terms of DR and noise (it has the same advantage over the NX1 and every other smaller sensor). At base ISO the Sony will have a lot more information in the shadows/highlights - about 1.5 stops. At 6400 the files are so clean its amazing. Face/eye detection are next level, as is the 93% sensor PDAF coverage - once it locks on to something it can track it across the entire frame, the Fuji can only track reliably in the middle portion of the frame. The three smaller primes are gems - the 28/2 (sharp in the center, a little field curvature - at faster apertures keep your subject in the center), 55/1.8 (super sharp, great bokeh, lots of CA) and 85/1.8 (cheap, sharp and nicer bokeh than the Batis IMO). The new Tamron zooms looks great as well. I have the f/4 zooms, the 16-35 is a stellar UWA - its my most used E-mount lens, the 24-70 ranges from ok to good depending on the FL you're shooting and the 70-200 is a workhorse. I'm going to swap my 24-70 for the Tamron as soon as I can find one, its the hottest lens around right now. The Samyang 35/1.4 looks like a winner too and its just $500. I have one on the way, the 35/1.4 is my workhorse for event shooting. The number of 3rd party lenses will expand much faster now that CaNikon are getting into mirrorless since they can build them for multiple mounts. Fuji's lenses have slowed to a crawl since they're focusing on the GFX, only 3 new lenses between now and 2020. There have been about two-dozen E-mount lenses released in the last couple years and that pace isn't slowing. The new Sony body fixes a lot of the ergo issues compared to earlier models. Its not without flaws, Sony went cheap with the LCD and single UHS-II card, they stripped out app functions like time-lapse and have not replaced them - with Fuji that and focus stacking is built-in. People complain about menus, but once you get it set up you rarely need to go menu diving anymore. You can assign custom functions for both stills and video modes, along with the Fn menu - everything else you frequently use can be added to a "My Menu" so you don't have to search dozens of menu pages. I like shooting with Fuji except its IBIS still has that jerky-ness in video that Fuji hasn't fixed, its AF is a generation behind Sony's, and the DR with stills can never catch the larger FF sensor in the a7III. The ISO dial fell off one of my XT2's as well, a lightly used body with less than 5k clicks, had to replace the entire $210 top plate. Grrr... I was all set to get the XH1, but after using one for a short time it just didn't offer enough over my XT2 to upgrade. After using the new Z battery with the a7III, I'm not spending top dollar for another small battery camera, Fuji really shot themselves in the foot not putting the GFX battery in the XH1, that and the XT100's tilt LCD were major blunders that made it a no buy for me. If you use Adobe to edit stills, Sony's color got a real shot in the arm with the new color profile from the update earlier this year. Plus you can now easily apply LUT's to stills, Eterna with Sony's raws. Love it. I've been a faithful Fuji shooter for awhile now, but the future for enthusiast cameras is clearly FF, especially if you shoot a lot of stills since CaNikon is entering that space in the next few months. Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, Samyang and Zeiss are all making AF lenses for the E-mount and many others are doing MF lenses. Plus you can adapt Canon glass. Its just a more versatile system with all the adapter options and such. Smaller sensors can't compete with the DR or the resolution. With Fuji you have one sensor and nothing else for years until the next update. With Sony you have options, APS-c/FF, absolute speed, high resolution and so on. Personally I'm going to be moving on from my Fuji system, the a7III and recent Sony lenses like the 85/1.8, 24-105, 12-24, and 100-400 has all but killed Fuji for me. Cheers Chris

  19. 100% agree. AS LONG AS having 24mp allows for better video features. It seems difficult in today's tech to have 24MP + 4K60P ... ... If Canikon releases an A7III copy (same video feature and quality, AF on par, stills on par, IBIS) I will buy it. In fact the Canon will have better AF for sure and probably worst video feature and still quality. Nikon will have better still quality (Dynamic Range as always) but AF is a question. THEN I will buy it to replace my A7III. Why? Because in the past for DSLRs Sony was always behind and always the brand releasing good specs on paper but worst in real use. Honestly they did not change much when you see all the ergonomic cons of the A7. BUT NOW Sony will release an A7SIII with 4K60p, which for sure the Canikon won't do. So I will need this one for video and will be stuck with either having an A7SIII and the Nikon FF or stay completely with Sony. Ideally for me, as Andrew said I would love a 24mp camera with best video features 4K60p and so on from Nikon and one 46mp D850 like mirrorless. Best in class codec and profile, best in class ergonomics... Would be perfect. But A7S sales are very low in comparison to A7r and A7 so for sure Canikon will not do an A7s competitor. Frustrating to see that 1DX II is old today, yet it is the only FF with 4K60p and best FHD120p...

  21. Well when Nikon and Canon do they will win over a lot of users in a instant. As the colour science is one of the most important aspects, and sony is surely not a competitor on that department. As well as lenses, as a lot of users are using EF glass. Because there are a lot of camera's using the EF camera mount not just canon.

  23. Indeed, The Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 is probably optically my best lens but it is far from my dearest. I have a Canon EF 20-35 2.8 L lens that is almost 30 years old. These have been updated FOUR times since (17-35 2.8 and three 16-35 2.8 since) and yet they still sell for only about $100 to $200 less than a second hand Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 I have a almost forty year old Canon FD 24 1.4 and these still sell for MORE than the Sony 55 can be found new! I strongly recommend the FE 85 1.8 for anyone even remotely interested in an 85mm lens (unless wanting the much more expensive Batis 1.8 or the great 1.4)

    Nikon FF Mirrorless

The adapter is really important for me, I don't have much appetite to clear out all my existing Nikon glass. And I am sure that goes for a lot of Nikon shooters who are interested in mirrorless. I can use my Nikon stuff on Sony E-mount with AF, although to be honest the AF sucks - it might be that the data bus on Nikon's lenses is too slow to support PDAF on sensor, which is where that patent would help, with the traditional mirror box PDAF. A mirror inside the adapter would be really a shame though. They have PDAF on sensor (at least according to the leaks), and surely they can find a way to make it work well with Nikon F mount lenses, even if the bus is slower than Canon EF.... Maybe that patent was just covering their options from a while back before the final spec of the camera was developed. Not sure there is much customer demand to add a mirror to a mirrorless camera

actually that post does not fare well at all for Nikon (USA) as if you read carefully: the camera still has never been in stock at any of the major online camera stores. it's not about hot demand but simply Nikon USA never being able to distribute the camera to major retailers! lotta US folks cancelled their pre-order ages ago and moved to other systems as a result.. very strange as D850 has been well stocked here in the EU.

But the adapter has been officially announced..so legacy lens support is a given, and i doubt Nikon won't have it ready for launch, or near launch. i'm more interested however in details of this said adapter, the revealed patent with mirror inside doesn't sound like ideal solution as far as rendering (btw could anyone clue me in on why a mirror would be needed inside the adapter?! i've got nikon adapters for e-mount & fuji that don't require mirrors) . i've still got a few AI-S, AF-D & G primes i'm quite fond of so definitely curious about the adapter myself..

Hopefully they have two adapters: 1) for modern Nikon F lenses which is very good but relatively affordable 2) supports ALL Nikon F lenses ever made, but more pricey and complex? They should have shot the video with a Canon to hide what is in the shadows. Boom.... roasted

Until then visit my experimental project: http://colorizer.net/index.php?op=lut_contrast With this tool you can remove the contrast curve of a 3D LUT. With the method I use the curve of the Eterna LUT can't be removed without distortion of the RGB transformation, but you won't necessarily see it in real-life footage. Maybe try 50% strength or less.

I have one of those Manfrotto ones with a trigger on the shaft that you can change height in a heart beat. Not the newer one worth the feet on it. I am not sure I would ever trust a Monopod to stand there with 3 grand of stuff hanging on it LoL. But if I had to do it over again I would buy one with the feet. It came be a lot more stable like the bottom video shows. This video shows what you can do and this other one also. There is even more you can do. Just look up more videos on the subject.

That's not knowing Nikon and in its history. They take pride in there lens design and heritage and they consider them foremost as an optical company. They don't want you to adapt Sony or whatever company lens, they want their native lens on their camera. The worst thing is that they have already adapter for the Nikon fmount and you to use their lens or to a lesser extent Nikon mount compatible lens. If the adapter is good, it might be better in some way as you could adapt 50+ years of Nikon glass at worst for them all the zeiss, tamron, tokina sigma lens that can use their advance metering and auto focus. I have been a bit disappointed by Nikon video feature that I am a bit dubious. My benchmark would be a Nikon D850 level video spec. So no 10 bit and log profile. But I guess a very good autofocus, peaking etc will give a very good all rounder, with very good 4k and 1080p, with great low light (even better with the 24 megapixel model) and above all else Nikon colours. In overall a very very good photo/video hybrid camera but spec sheet wise not the top of the line.

  45. @tupp very interesting videos, thanks for sharing! If it were simply possible to swap out the UHS-I SD card interface inside the EOS M for a UHS-II one, that would make higher resolution recording feasible. But I imagine the amount of coding required to make it work might make it very difficult. In any case I doubt you'd be able to sell and make any money from a hardware hack like this - unless you get permission from Canon! I spoke to a Canon rep at the media production show in London recently where they were showing off their cinema EOS cameras, and he was aware of the EOS M 2.5k hack and seemed totally positive about it even saying he'd like to try it himself. I showed him the hack in operation. He also said he hoped that magic lantern would be available for the M50 one day!

Oh damn, wish Sony promoted that more in more markets! Ironically the C300mk2 has the best Autofocus out of all the higher end cinema cameras!
