    R.I.P. João Gilberto

One of the most influences of the contemporary arts, mainly in the realm of the sounds but also to the world of the pictures, in these last 60 years, left us Yesterday July 6 in Rio de Janeiro. His legacy stays fortunately alive... Master of whisper and variations of a single note (E : -) https://variety.com/2019/music/news/joao-gilberto-father-of-bassa-nova-dies-at-88-1203260543/ https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/brazilian-bossa-nova-pioneer-joao-gilberto-dies-at-88 https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/06/arts/music/joao-gilberto-dead-bossa-nova.html This is where everything started:

  2. Grant Petty has nothing to do with the decisions made in PR in Knutsford. And to be fair to Blackmagic, said PR team were apologetic afterwards and in favour of reaching out. I believe it would be a very constructive relationship if they genuinely put some effort in. JB's rudeness on here is legendary, but it's in the past as far as I'm concerned, we as a community moved on from him. Hook contributed straight forward answers and good info. There are far more viewers than contributors in this post. How about some more constructive contributors to satisfy that audience of 1 million who have tuned in? Those people who are posting good info is what this thread and indeed whole forum are about. The bitching should always take a backseat.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Hey guys, just back from a trip - Thanks RCV! Yes - but it'll be an approximation for ~4000k fluorescents/leds. For daylight, you'll want to use an accurate WB (from a white card), with the Daylight variation Fantastic video; exposure and WB were on point Yes, though Vegas is a complete black box for me. Perhaps one day I'll give it a try. The same principles and order of operations for Resolve/Premiere apply to Vegas (granted the particulars of the NLE) With NDs, its quite important to WB accurately. They very often give a green cast (also the case with the reference Firecrests) Working towards it; P4K is next, then S thereafter I would like to do an S1 variation, but it'll be a while yet. In either scenario, the exposure target of 45 middle gray will remain the same. With the current variation, one would lower the highlights in the NLE in advance of the conversion (rather than expose darkly in camera) It was learn as I went; I had no idea how to code in C++ when I started. It was a daunting task, but I did used to code in ti-basic a long time ago. The challenge was about learning the particulars of C++, getting back into that mode, getting my head around the idea of 3d color manipulations, and coding with modern full computer potential. On the calculator, efficiency was everything.

    S1 Anyone?

I'm with you, I find the m43 format to be just outstanding for video work and really enjoy the smaller form factor, so I'd love to see some of the imaging mojo of the S1 compressed into a new m43 product. I just realized the 10-25mm zoom is possibly releasing this month which may be too soon for a GH6 announcement. Maybe we'll hear more this fall. Here's a link to a video where the director of Panasonic's imaging department discusses the possibility of new m43 models. (It's at the 2 minute mark.) He doesn't come out and confirm anything, but he reaffirms Panasonic's commitment to m43 and stats that they are looking into products based on the format. So, I can only assume a GH6 is in the mix... Not to derail an S1 thread though, he does have some interesting thoughts regarding DFD vs phase detect focusing in all panasonic cameras toward the end. From what he says, he seems open to considering other focusing solutions if that will give Panasonic better performance in the future, but he believes contrast AF is the most accurate and that is why it is the system they currently use.

  6. So would I. Good job I make my films primarily for me, not for some sucker who can't be arsed to watch them properly I'd also say that the kind of compression and mush we see in the otherwise lovely lake scene, isn't what any of us go into this passion for. I'd go as far as to say everyone here loves the look of film and cinema. We all have our favourite movies and cinematographers. If someone on YouTube, or some client, or some audience members can't get off their smartphone to appreciate our art, why do we owe it to them to dumb down our love of images? Why should we start believing that none of what we love matters any more? Why should we stop demanding more from our equipment and dumb down our craft? Why should we think that none of this technological progress matters, just because of a lazy audience, or a clueless clientele? In the end we all had fun with this test and it reveals something very interesting, but I'll continue to revel in image quality for sake of my own interests and art, even if it doesn't matter to a smartphone viewer on YouTube.

  7. Of course! I don't mean scaling by changing the native resolution, I mean using Windows scale feature to scale the UI. You get the full benefits of working with native 4k screen while not having to use a magnifying glass to see the UI.

  8. And it has happened like that : ) Who accepts bitching over here...?! The point is when people take positive criticism as anything negative and start to biasedly counterattack... Pure nonsense. What for BTW?! Truth should universally be at the ship's command column, this doesn't rule out a diversity of angles over the same subject in respect of fairness though. B&W portraits can variably shine but only in 100% under required circumstances ; ) The idea 'who's not with me is against me' is proper of a totalitarian mindset, not suitable to any healthy discussion and progress. Nothing valid comes from facts distortion. From egos either. Let alone ad hominem attacks! Perspective is always useful and welcome, I always want and tend to believe : -) That said, to ignore or undervalue this capture device (my fav cam ever as so many times written) is absolutely unfair. As much as the most fanatic opposite side.

  10. Smartphones are the worst thing that have ever happened to cinema... And 40% our audience! But I do recognise what this test was primarily about... The overall colours and look of the lens. These can be judged from a smartphone. But if the camera sensor and codec is levelled out by YouTube and tiny smartphones, it doesn't mean to say they don't matter! I think the Pocket 4K's advantages were levelled flat, raised to the ground in fact, by YouTube compression & smartphone viewers voting... But does that mean I will stop using it for the incredible images vs something less capable? Nah.

  11. We don't. The point is that you can't dictate what "dumbing down" means. It's subjective. There are no end all feature that means nicer image according to everyones taste and workflow. I choose the best tool with the best specs in order to get the best possible results. In no way am I dumbing down anything. It just happens to be that tool is recording HD.

    New Monitor 32" 4K

Yeah, I know, I am using Premiere since the SCSI era and windows since DOS 3.0 having a degree in multimedia computing and programming (another one in sound engineering and a BA Hons in Film and Video). So if you are using it on 150%, don't you have it 50% more than the original 100%? And what if I want it differently on different occassions or even different sites? Just stay with your workflow, I will stay with mine..

  15. "The other adapter I will be trying in the full review is the Sony A mount range, both for full frame Alpha glass – of which there are some rather nice ones, indeed some of my favourite of all time, and the superbly cinematic Minolta AF range." I also think they have a distinctly cinematic quality. It's nice to hear I'm not the only one who thinks that. Ya know, when you mention the word "Minolta" some cinematographers are like, "What are you crazy?" Fuck them. LOL.

  16. But think of the kudos! And it’s better than coming first because it’s a useful way of having a clear out (yes, I did use that rusted bent quick release plate on that custom bipod...) I’m shooting today if everything goes to plan.

  17. Wait.. what? I don't think you understand. No, you don't zoom in the whole image (that's what changing resolution would do), you only scale up the UI (by changing DPI), without touching anything else. You don't have to zoom in and out constantly lol, you just set it to 150% and forget it. You can even individually scale different monitors, so that the UI size remains the same no matter if you're on a 4k or 1440p screen. Just try it yourself man

  20. Well good for them. Now they might want to put those sensors into actual freaking cameras so it can be good for us! Time has been long. A7SIII and A6700 are way overdue. There is an event with new Sony camera announcement confirmed for July 17, let’s see. Also on July 11 sigma will announce some specific Sony FE lens including a 35mm 1.2 and a 14-24 2.8. Exciting.

  21. whert? theres only 5 reasons, and none of them are that interesting. I only own the 14-30 f4. It's really handy, but it's not great, soft at 14, and farking expensive for a plastic focus by wire lens. And on that - what in gods name is good about it? They are a pain in the arse to fcus manually, let alone focus pull. The 14-30 is soft enough that even zoomed all the way in focussing by wire is a nightmare. Nikon touted it's lens mount as enabling super-duper lens design, then brought out f1.8 primes and f4 zooms aimed at a consumer market. Totally batso strategy and SNAFU for nikon. The only native z lenses I'm going to consider buying are wide, or light lenses, Because once you get over a certain size and weight, you may as well buy f-mount and keep your mounting options open (ie you can adapt them to everything else, whereas z-mount lenses are for z-cameres only). My lens research over the last few months has been on the zhongyi 85mm f1.2, 50mm f0.95 laowa 10-18. 12mm zero d, 105 f2. sigma and nikon 105 f1.4, even if z versions are released, I still might consider buying e or F mount versions of these lenses because it leaves my future options open. If nikon had released z versions of a 12-24 f4, 16-40 f2.8, 50 f1.2 that is a similar size to it's existing f1.2 lens (with similar rendering), and 20, 35, 85 f1.4 primes I would've looked hard at all of those. And why not have a focus by wire option that keeps the travel of the lens ring locked to how much the focus changes? how hard can that be?

  24. Despite the issues I am going to be getting the camera soon. The price/value ratio is just incredibly high no matter how you look at it. BM is now really the only one competing against RED with a compressed RAW format. The Pocket is of course cheaper than even the RED one and probably performs better. I of course hope they solve these current issues but even if not its still a solid camera.

  25. Interesting results! I certainly disagree with the majority here haha. Though, I suppose in an uncontrolled test, people are going to be judging different things. I tried to ignore DOF, compression, and focus, and really just looked at colors to the best of my ability. It would be interesting to know why people voted the way they did.

  26. The results are in. Some are a little funny, others kinda expected but still interesting. When I counted the first time a few days ago the funny part was that J wasn't to far behind I. But I didn't expect this. (BTW, this morning J was still in the lead between the two.)

  28. Does a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 FE (adapted) focus as quickly/smoothly on the Nikon as the native 24-70 f4? I have to say the Tamron f2.8 zooms are a big attraction, budget-wise, of the E mount system, but if they can be adapted well, or Tamron produce a native Z version, then Nikon looks much more attractive. Maybe Tamron needs to get someone from Techart to work on their AF protocols?

    New Monitor 32" 4K

Even on my 27" 1440 monitors I zoom in on occasion! Seriously people, try the 4K resolution on a 27" before you buy. Usually these are gaming monitors, for the best of the best of GPU's (4 digit prices) which is great, but try using Premiere/Resolve on these and it can drive you mad! The opposite is true also, a 27" 1080 monitor is not worth it at all. Also, good for gamers because they can have no lag and too much frames for lesser GPU's. Anyways, it is your choice. I wanted another 27" 18 months ago and after a lot of research I got another 1440 but with USB C and all the connections as a hub, waiting for 4K tech to catch up. Now I am going 31-34" for a 4K one, throwing out my old PLS one (amazing Samsung panel, by the way) and keeping the newer 27" as a hub and whatnot. Checking this one also, maybe out of my price range and weird-everything. https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/34wk95u-w

  30. So I had a quick go with the £28 CCD camera yesterday and managed to get a film look out of it. Unfortunately the particular film it looks like is the Zapruder one Yeah, after looking at stuff I shot yesterday even on the lesser of the two evil cameras, I'm now regretting not giving in to my darker side and "buying" that 4K camera I'm also regretting not noticing the auto ISO was set to ON which as I had a vari-ND on was merrily ramping up the ISO to counteract every reduction I was doing. Every shot before I noticed it (which was about 70% of the total) has a swarm of angry red and green mosquitos buzzing around in it.

  32. Hi Andrew, 6.1 is the last version that has Cinema DNG. 6.2 adds BRAW and Removes Cinema DNG for the Pocket 4k, it can still be rolled back as it is only compatible with the Old LCD version. 6.2.1 is for compatibility with the new LCD and can not be rolled back if you have the new LCD. In this thread someone said that they could roll back from 6.2.1 to 6.1 https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=90870 so I they must have the Old LCD. The 6.2.1 firmware identifies if you have the Old or New LCD and allows or disallows rollback based on the hardware identification. It makes sense to keep a copy if the installers for 6.1 and 6.2 so you can upgrade and rollback depending on the functionality you desire.

Wanted to try out my new Simmod variable nd for times I dont want to keep changing my firecrest Nd's. Seems to work pretty well after messing with the WB shift in camera to get rid of the green tint. Im starting to love using the GH5 with this Lut. I'v never had a camera produce such great colours with minimal effort.

  34. I think a lot of people base their dislike about Smartphones if they have an older one., and by older I mean even a 2 year old one. My iPhone XS just kills my iPhone X I had and the X killed the iPhone 8 I had before it. They have been improving at a amazing rate. So unfortunately unless you keep up with the latest and great phone you are Way behind compared to say your friends 40D, because Canon has made nearly Zero gains on their lower end cameras. They used the same sensor for years and years. The Canon 80D my son had was a big let down output wise. Soft photos and soft videos. The DPAF was nice, but that was about it. A big, fat clunky body to boot. The EOS M I have has a better output than the 80D had, or no worse I think. Even the CS is better on the EOS M. Not a fan of the modern look they have now on their DSLRs. But sure if I was going on a vacation of a lifetime a Phone would not be my top choice. Probably a 1" mirrorless camera of some sort, or a m4/3, even the Canon M50. But in some places you probably are Only going to get away shooting with a phone.

  35. On a recent trip my wife took pictures with her iPhone and I took video with the GH5. We often took images from the same vantage points one after the other so there was ample room for comparison. One thing I noticed when I started grading the images was how lovely the iPhone photos were in terms of colour and processing. I've got it on my list to try and break down the iPhone colour science to learn some stuff. It's an interesting thing, the debate about convenience vs output. A friend of mine who is into stills photography still uses his Canon 40D (or maybe it's even a 30D) because although he's done several major trips (eg, weeks going through Europe) and really tried to use his iPhone, he says that "the only photos I give the slightest f@#$ about came from the DSLR". For him the matter is closed - no smartphone picture has ever done it for him so taking a picture with a smartphone is basically like throwing the moment away. It's not like it's about anything other than the image either: he's a minimalist, hates the size and weight of the DSLR, he prints the odd picture but mostly they go out in a regular email update to friends and family, and he part owns and runs a tech company doing programming and virtualisation of services in the cloud. He's the perfect person for a smartphone, a parent who values convenience, is completely connected online and has disposable income to buy whatever smartphone he'd like, but nope! Do you think it's the shutter delay that gets in the way? or something else specific that you can think of? I've done street photography with both and apart from stealth, the real camera wins in every other department IMHO.
