  1. Thanks. IBIS really works well with the 20mm. This was shot using the Standard profile; in post I slightly tweaked the WB in some shots and altered luminance and some curves. I do not know what ISO was used; in this light aperture is wide open, shutter speed is fixed and thus all my exposure control was via ISO, and I exposed based on matching what I saw in the scene to what the viewfinder was showing.

    Sell my 1DC for GH5?

I've been a Panasonic user since the GH2 and each upgrade has been fantastic. They've successfully delivered worthwhile improvements in every area of function and image and seem to really listen to their user base. It's an exciting yet reliable system to be a part of. The GH5 looks certain it will continue this trend and two areas of promising improvement seem to be low light and colour given the current videos (an area where Canon has historically had the edge). However, like @Flynn says, a lot of Canon users love the colour science and can't let it go despite the cameras lacking functionality and features. If that specific mojo inspires you to make films then you may struggle with a switch to Panasonic. How do you use your cameras? For earning money, for filmmaking on the side, or a mixture of both? I use them for both so the practicality and features of the Panasonics win the day. I think I would feel like I had one arm tied behind my back if I tried making a living as videographer with a 1DC now. My other thought, was that if your dream is to clear your debts and get to LA (not far off mine!) then I would be making all my decisions based on what would get me there faster. At the end of the day, mojo, lowlight, codecs, and all the jazz we are all guilty of getting sucked into on this forum, are secondary to having a great idea, writing it and shooting it. If you've got something dynamite, it can be shot on anything and other factors such as writing, lighting, acting and editing will be what get your piece noticed. Final thought, networking in LA will probably advance your career more than any camera ;-)

  3. My point exactly! Accept for the last part. Your knowledge can definitely protect you from hardware flaws in the same way it protects you from the horrible consequences of using camera A over camera B. My point is: The shooter is the key. Learn how to shoot and use light and almost any camera will do. But learn your cameras pros and cons so you can work with and around them. Get the camera that suits your needs. Every camera out there, every single one, has huge deal breaking flaws. You just have to pick the once you can live with

  5. That's a complicated question. At the highest setting there's a benefit. Whether you'll see it or not is an entirely different question. At high ISOs it makes a difference and with some very high detail scenes it can, too. Below 422 HQ I think AVCHD is better. It's cleaner than the lower prores flavors, that's how good it is, or how bad Atomos' prores implementation is.

  6. @kidzrevil that video above sums up for me how I feel about the XC10. In good light, like the outdoors shots, the camera gives a lovely image which can be pushed quite hard in grading. But when light is low, the image is not good - it's mushy, falls apart in the grade, colour rendition suffers and ghosting is a PITA. For what kidzrevil needs to do - fashion, music vids, etc. - image quality is paramount and the XC10 doesn't cut the mustard. For more casual stuff like travel vids and documentation it's absolutely fine. I promised to post a few frame grabs to show off what the camera can do when conditions are right. The weather was great the other day so we went for a walk. I brought along the XC10 as I wanted to check out how an X-Rite Colorchecker might improve colour separation using MBR Color Corrector 2 plugin for AE (it did help). No look LUTs here. Everything is EOS Standard, corrected for colour using the X-Rite, and a simple white balance, contrast and saturation adjustment.

  8. I often come across deals that I think are really good. Both used and new. Often Im not in the market to buy at the time or its not what Im looking for. So, why not a thread where we tip each other about good deals and discounts. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation, connection or any other reason than feeling like it to why I share this. Recently I tipped the forum about Cyberphoto who are selling a Samsung NX1 + S Zoom + Battery Grip with warranty for a good price. Now its about them again. Yesterday they had an "Evening Deal" for just a few hours. It was 10% off on the E-M1ii. Today its an a6000. My guess this will be a reappearing type of deal. This is the same store that sent out 20% off on the NX1 and GX80 when they where brand new. The G7 was almost down to€200 at one point. So, it could be worth keeping an eye on. www.cyberphoto.se Both times the Evening Deal has been at the very top. To make it easier to spot in the future just look for the word "Kvällskampanj".

    Smart Adapter

I have reflected on the possibility of building a smart adapter, But before working on this project I would like to ask you friends of the forum, which would you prefer: 1) Aputure Dec 2) Techart Pro Aputure Dec has the advantage of remote manual control, no mechanism on the adapter, built-in battery, open the iris and the display showing the iris aperture values. Disadvantages, it works only with Canon EF lenses. Techart Pro has the extraordinary advantage of transforming all manual lenses with auto focus lenses, and since the thickness can mount almost all existing lenses. Disadvantages, can not adjust the aperture of the iris of Canon EF lenses, no remote control. This question is not an official communication to work on Autofocus system to Samsung, this depends on the time and money that I can spend, I just want to do a survey to see what you prefer. I look forward to hearing your opinions. - write 1) for Apture Dec; - write 2) for Techart Pro. Thank you

  12. Yeah, there was a whole thread on here: Pretty much specifically catered towards he BMPCC, but you get the idea. I personally quite dig the Kiev 16U set as seen on: Check out: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Objektive/3323/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ssn=artemstore&_ipg=200&_dmd=2&_sop=16 , Artem usually rocks very nice sets and lenses like it. At one point I was thinking about getting a Russian friend to organize me one of these to try out: http://shop.zenit-foto.ru/kinoob-ektivy (the 'cheap' originals, not the http://www.lumatechinc.com ones), maybe buy the whole bunch if I liked it. But I haven't really been using the BMPCCs that much these days. They should really do a BMPCC Mark II.

    Smart Adapter

"there was a guy who managed to make the Samsung communicate with Canon lenses with a conversion board." I think it's the same guy who made the Rocky Mountains Movie Converter. Looking at his site and videos it seems he can control both EF and NX lenses via Arduino. To me it seems he could be very close in making an active adapter if he has time and motivation.

    Smart Adapter

Is it impossible at this stage to make an electronic adapter? Techart Pro with electric connection to lens for stabiliser would be amazing, its no point if the electronic lens is not activated and it just adjusted it as if was a manual lens, there was a guy who managed to make the Samsung communicate with Canon lenses with a conversion board.

  24. @andrgl Sure...Some of it, at least...Shot last weekend with the 5dm3 and the stellar 300mm F2.8 at the WorldCup Grand Prix in LElPZlG (Germany) - only altered ownership and serial number in EXIF because of privacy... And now one with the phantastic 17-40mm F4 USM lens...That's me in a composition (shooting against light and exposing ETTR) visualizing the flaws of the 5D mX: ZERO dynamic range (compared with Nikon / Sony sensors), no shadows can be recovered in post, because dark tones getting noisy as hell, etc....OK, when carrying reflectors and wireless HSS + strobes with you, it should work...But at this time our Sherpas were on vacation... ;-) Shooting more than 1.000.000 stills and more than 800 hours of film, I could say to have some experience...Even considering that I still go to school and do digital imaging as "professional hobby"....So, it's not necessary to enlighten me about Canon DSLRs advantages and flaws... @andrgl & @hmcindie If you would have seriously shooted video with the D750 (1.700 Euro) and the D8xx (about 2.500 Euro), you would have to admit, that even these two DSLRs offer by far more 1080p quality than any much more expensive Canon DSLR...So, no reason to advocate Canons mushy 720p packed in 1080p marketing bla bla... ;-) BTW: Put the 300mm 2.8 or the 400mm 2.8 with a cheap 20 Euro adapter on the 1.300 Euro NX1, shoot (stills & 1080p video) and compare with the 5d m3 (up to 300 ISO)...You will be shocked, how the NX1 (APS-C) blows the 5d m3 away...A cheap APS-C camera blowing a expensive FF flagship away...In stills and 1080p video (again: in stills up to 300 ISO)... @kidzrevil Well said, and so true...It's all about content and an impeccable IQ, corresponding to todays "industrial" standards...When doing serious work, it's about delivering best possible quality...For your clients, for your targeted audience and/or for your own eyes. Though, you should consider, that the XC10 is a 1" device. Pushing too far (means also in low light and high ISO) is not the strength of a 1" sensor.... @jonpais My mom bought now the A6500, we got a very convenient and cheap deal from a guy selling it with receipt and German warranty, just 4 weeks after buying it. He had huge hands and the camera was not a good device for this guy...But a good deal for us...First I will take it to a buddy of mine (electronics and hardware programming freak) to make some changes - making the cam to not overheat at all...After that, I will begin shooting with it and sending the footage to a professional colorist, who promised me to help in fundamental Sony colour grading/correction (mainly skin tones, greens and sky gradations to avoid banding and other artifacts with a 4:2:0 8bit footage). After that, I can discuss on this topic...

  28. Well, I didn't say he said it was horrid. I said he said something like that. In his recent review of the G85 he said this: "I didn’t expect to like it when it came out. On paper and on the shelf it looks a bit boring. There’s Panasonic’s colour science, which is dreadful and a bit like what Sony do. Nothing like a Canon." So, there you have it. He called Panasonic's color science "dreadful." Now, we can debate the weight of these words, but neither "horrid" nor "dreadful" are what anyone would call complementary. Nicht Wahr?

    Canon XC10 4K camcorder

I see your point and respect it. I enjoy testing cameras and attempting to find one that fits perfectly with my style and plans. So far, I have not found the perfect match. But I really hope people do not listen to a word I say about anything, even if I knew everything... which I obviously don't. Look at specs, look at samples and then if they are still unsure, rent one or purchase from somewhere that has a good return policy. All I can say about the XC10 is that I really enjoyed the camera and had to push it to a high ISO to see the ghosting. Or it's very possible you guys have better eyes and standards than I do. For what it is, a native ISO point and shoot cinema camera, I think a lot of filmmakers could do worse.

  32. I've used the Zhiyun Crane on 2 shoots now with the A6500 - and it's the first time ever that I've been really pleased with a camera / gimbal combo. The Zhiyun is a beast and operates brilliantly. Works very well with the A6500 autofocus. The only real downside is that the A6500 doesn't have 4k60p, the 1080 60p is just ok, so I'd say it really depends on the GH5's autofocusing capability. I'm covered for cameras, the GH5 would be a treat if anything. How long until we see 4K 60p in Sony cameras? (But it likely won't be 10 bit in a firmware upgrade!)

  39. You kidding, same sports noise score like the Nikon D500, impressive, impossible. Well, maybe I shouldnt believe DXOs sensor measuring with 100% but only with 90% of belief Looks promising regarding the GH5 sensor. Combined with Panasonics clever processing this is gonna give us indeed some nice video quality, even moreso in 10bit AVC Intra. Thanks a lot, Luke, for providing such great contributions, knowledge, footage and friendliness to this forum. Last week the DOP of Laconia, a well received BBC TV mini (not the German voiced over talking heads edit!!:) gave us the honour and pleasure to stop by at our school. One of the things he told us how much of a pain shooting on 35mm was and how modern cameras allow you to get away with so much. He also said, that a lot of what we remember regarding the 35mm look is due to its scanning process and digital projection and distribution. With the GH5, just don´t go higher than 1250 or 1600 and you will be in wonderland:)

  40. I had no intentions of getting another one - long story short one was offered to me with 4 batteries, a 18-135 STM, the box and all accessories for $1950 cash. All legit with receipts. I couldn't jump on it fast enough - it was the Mark II and the seller was a professional photog - just needed rid of it. I have felt somewhat guilty, but he told me he priced it half off just to move it. Twice in my camera buying career I've gotten very, very lucky - last year was a XC-10 with 2 256 GB CFast cards for $1200. Otherwise, I normally take a bloodbath / beating buying and selling gear.

  41. Yeah, you made me look into Scandinavian prices some time ago and I noticed funnily enough electronics can be had quite cheap there (just about everything else is pretty much expensive). Even managed to pick up a G7 on the cheap in person just before store closure at FotoKungen, Stockholm (quite late in the day, folks at Rajala didn't have stock but were nice enough to point me in their direction). Over the last few years I must've been in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo countless times... unfortunately those days seem over. I posted about a sick deal on Rajala around Black Friday/Cyber Monday: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/21128-last-minute-deal-for-swedes-upd-extended/ , but talking to them, they referred me to the Finnish site instead; which of course didn't have any good deals going on, in fact it was more expensive than here locally. fml Not sure, but I think all these stores have a policy not to ship anything elsewhere? See, Cyberphoto seems the same... https://www.cyberphoto.se/leveransvillkor#leveransinformation-utom-sverige . Btw, for fun you should follow the links to the .no and .fi domains and see what happens. See, I am now in the market for a Huawei Mate 9 Pro which has the dual Leica cam set-up. It sells in Central/Western Europe under Porsche Design licence at 1395,- EUR. Yup. That's right, your eyes aren't deceiving you. Luckily you guys up north don't give in to such foolishness, so I've noticed on YouTube that Huawei Denmark, Norway, Sweden & Finland are promoting the Huawei version (earlier it was thought to be China released only). I made accounts at multiple Scandinavian shops... yet all won't allow it to be shipped to your address in e.g. Austria. I mean, I know a guy from Norway and another from Denmark that are bound visit home at some point this or next month and could probably organize me one. But otherwise it's pretty tough luck it seems. For someone who wants to undertake ordering something from abroad, but shops don't send items to your country... there are some forwarding services. I'll name a few: https://www.shipito.com (US -> ..) | http://www.borderlinx.com (US -> ..) | https://www.bpm-lux.com (US/UK/BE/LX/DE/IT/ES -> ..) | https://mailboxde.com (DE -> ..) | http://www.logoix.com (DE -> EU) | http://www.huifkarverzendservice.nl (DE -> NL) | http://www.cssbuy.com (CN -> ..) | http://www.mistertao.com (CN -> ..) | http://www.tenso.com/en/ (JP -> ..) | http://global.rakuten.com/en/ (JP -> ..) | etc. There's also some other type of new and upcoming way to get your deliveries. It's a sort of UBER/Lyft model, so more like a p2p kinda of thing, but instead of being with driver and passenger it's sender and receiver... try it own risk: https://www.parcl.com & http://airnshop.com . Of course sites like Idealo and Kelkoo. Don't forget your local Google Shopping site (e.g. https://www.google.com/shopping | https://www.google.de/shopping | https://www.google.nl/shopping | .. ) either. There are some shops that import stuff from all over the world for cheap and might be able to give you a fair deal, like http://www.eglobalcentral.com . There's also stores in Hong Kong that export stuff, some stores offer customers from certain countries a tax free guarantee, for example: http://www.onestop-digital.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=8&currency=EUR&sl=en ('At the moment, this VAT Free guarantee only applies to orders shipped to Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States'). My Nikon AI-s 28mm f/2.8 MF came from http://www.aclub.com , initially found them on eBay. You can e-mail them and negotiate a little on the price. No guarantees, but it did fly under the radar with customs. For accessories, a good place to check is always http://www.linkdelight.com , http://www.camfere.com or one of the many other China webshops . Many of which, btw, are behind some eBay stores. So, eBay, right!? It's a great place to roam around (sure many of you have bought something from http://stores.ebay.com/roxsen at some point in time), for example if you need lens adapters, I highly recommend the ones from K&F (Kent & Faith) Concept (listings on eBay usually have the black box with orange accents in them, there's another brand 'Leinox' which is pretty good as well, they're shown with thumbnails of the adapter and a black box with brownish/copper accents). One of my best kept secrets I'll share with you today: http://www.ebay.com/usr/artemstore . If you want a Russian vintage lens, he will hook you up. Somehow he always manages to find NOS (New Old Stock) or special series lenses as well. Such a great source. Btw. I just want to highlight something I found out about eBay. E.g. take a look at this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=zedigital&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=lens+adapter&_sacat=0 VS http://www.ebay.at/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=zedigital&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=lens+adapter&_sacat=0 . Same link, just changed the domain extension. The one gets 475 results, the other a mere 175. I usually use http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=putthethingyouwanttofindhere&LH_PrefLoc=2&_sop=15 to increase my chances of finding something, over time I've learned that gets me the best and most understandable results. In this case it comes up with 477 results and... it's English so you understand it: http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ssn=zedigital&_armrs=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=lens+adapter&_sacat=0 . Also try http://aliexpress.com , home of a lot of manufacturers as well (there's an app in your smartphone's app store, a lot can be had with a discount buying through the app). Did you know Aputure runs an offical store there for example? https://aputure.aliexpress.com . Need stuff for your GoPro? Have a look at TELESIN: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/630476 for example. A lot of brands have official stores on Amazon too (which always is a nice place to check, as some of the lightning deals involve camera gear and could get interesting from time to time). Or like Lilliput and Zhong Yi they might even have their own distribution channels, e.g.: http://lilliputdirect.com | http://www.zyoptics.net/purchase-online/ . Also. Don't forget, sometimes just subscribing to a newsletter gets you a nice welcome bonus. Also make sure to hit up a site like https://www.retailmenot.com before you purchase anything, there might be a good discount in it for you. So. Yeah! I'm all for good deals. But we just need to make sure we are able to get it somehow! I'm always keeping my eyes open, I'm a sucker for good deals as my G.A.S. history would show. DISCLAIMER: if you import something from abroad, make sure you know your national regulations and be aware that import duties might apply to your shipment

  42. We were recording live events for decades. I do that so many times every year and I have never use a A7s for such a job, usually these venues have some kind of lighting anyway, or else they do not want the crowds to see anything. I am just amazed that people these days believe that with no IBIS, and no A7s, you are doomed to oblivion. I face every day a market that expects from one person to do lights, camera, sound, edit, sound editing, grading, driving, droning, everything. It is not right.

  43. If anyone is interested in learning the hows and whys of grading then the Alexis Hurkman book is very good. Here's a sample chapter: https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://ptgmedia.pearsoncmg.com/images/9780321929662/samplepages/0321929667.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjlgrruyq_RAhWCWhQKHUB2DhIQFghXMAk&usg=AFQjCNHuTeG-lmowcqdfRUZ8zworMOaAkw&sig2=YNPI28RQXi8sbr7FeOp61g As with so many creative endeavours, for people starting out, learning how to hold back can be valuable. Usually, a grade should not call attention to itself. In the past, I've found it useful to download frame grabs of iconic movies from (not a porn site, although it sounds like one): http://www.blubeaver.ca Bring a few of these into your grading software and check them out on the scopes. Will give you a concrete idea of what to aim for. Some of the examples in this thread are very poor, as has already been pointed out - the visual equivalent of the "music" generated by someone who has never played an instrument picking up an electric guitar and thrashing around like a madman. Yes, it's fun and that's good. But don't expect your neighbours to like it! So if you are a "tone deaf" fledgling colourist making a lot of noise, it might be possible to improve with careful study.

  45. You're not wrong about Oly. And I shoot Fuji as well, so all these things are part of the mixed bag. The thing is, when we're talking price, when we're looking at cameras within similar classes, the difference is typically a few hundred bucks. At a certain point, determining my camera purchase can turn into a "penny wise and pound foolish," decision. A few hundred, or even a grand, is a small price to pay to own and use a camera that I'm comfortable with and does the things I need it to do. You know how it is. You balance liabilities of the gear with the needs of your work and one's own biases. For instance, I just did 6 30-min documentaries in 6 months. I did it with the GX85 and EM5II. I'm not lying when I say that I'm glad I did the job on these consumer cameras rather than something like an Arri. One would look INCREDIBLY better than the other, and I would love to use that camera for many many many things, but I wouldn't have been able to do half the work load (nor the radically informal work that yielded a lot of good results) without the flexibility of these goofy, small, hybrid, IBIS, 8-bit, cams. I know it's hard to fathom among a forum like this, but having the best IQ is not always a priority. My favorite industry idioms comes from the National Geographic guys. It's simply, "f8 and be there." And I think you can understand the sentiment of that saying. That's why I can't get caught up to much in the IQ debate. My factors for my particular work rely on a lot more than just IQ. You'll have other needs. Someone else will have other requirements as well. For instance, I'm doing a cinematic doc/narrative in 2017, and I plan on using a Sony F5 and 100% static shots, so it's always always an "it depends" sort of answer with tools one decides to use for a project.

Tried this on my Canon 60D w/ Sigma 18-35, and I didn't check for focus. Sorry please forgive my rookie mistake. Shot internally and it held up quite better than I imagined. Remember using CineStyle when it first came out and never got the look I wanted consistently.
