I completely fail to see this. A GH4 is vastly preferable to use than a Canon DSLR. Strongly suspect that the massive majority of preferences for Canon's so called "ergonomics" is just to the *huge* number of ex (or current) Canon shooters, thus saying "ergonomics" is just a code word for "familiar". There is nothing truly great about Canon's DSLR ergonomics for filming with, it is just "what we are used to" (personally I'd rather take a Nikon for stills!).

  5. Super annoying! But it seams that I found a fix: You just need to open Terminal and paste the following line: defaults -currentHost write com.apple.ImageCapture disableHotPlug -bool YES To reverse it back to normal just paste: defaults -currentHost write com.apple.ImageCapture disableHotPlug -bool NO Source: http://petapixel.com/2015/12/21/stop-apple-photos-from-auto-launching-in-os-x-with-one-command/

I'm going to have to defend the DSLR and mirrorless cameras big time... ENG shoulder shooting is overrated. I personally don't want to lug around a big heavy camera with rails and a shoulder mount that can only be shot with in one position at one height. At least with a DSLR you have a choice whether you rig it up for ENG style shooting or something more minimal. When you have 5 axis stabilisation and a body that weighs less than 1kg, it really isn't that hard Indeed when you have an EVF (either built in or via loupe) you basically have the same shooting style as a Super 16mm camera and nobody is suggesting those aren't suitable for film work. Times change. The 18MP refers to 6000 x 3000 in 6K Photo Mode (the maths is 6000 * 3000 = 18 million pixels) If the final sensor is in that aspect ratio I will eat my hat There's no way it is going to be 18MP. It will be in region of 24-28MP if it supports 6K res

  16. Sorry to disappoint you, but none of the Canons are good replacement for Micro Cinema Camera. All Canons in HD mode are disappointing crap vs your mentioned GH4 or Micro Cinema Camera. C-log does not fix the muddy pixels. Only 5DmarkIV and 1DX mark II and 1DC produce video quality which can replace the Micro Cinema Camera. If you want Canon HD-video, you can as well buy used 5DmarkII and you lose about nothing vs your list (except for more moire than 5DmarkIII), Canon HD video has not improved at all since 5D mark II came. Even 1DX mark II produces crappy HD-video and is only usable in 4K mode. In fact you can buy used 5D2 for less than new Rebel and it is a good camera in still mode, much superior to Rebel in image quality. I had my 5D2 until 1DX2 came despite also owning BMCC and GH4. GH4 loses badly in still mode to the old 5D.I had Magic Lantern installed and the MLraw out of it was reasonable quality despite of the moire.

    Animation?

Don Hertzfeldt is probably my favorite animation director currently, his film World of Tomorrow was my favorite film of last year. I saw "The Animation Show" in theaters when I was younger, during "Rejected" in the theater was the first time I laughed until I couldn't breath. Cannot wait to see what the guy does next. On the topic of animation, I always say WALL-E is an underrated masterpiece.

    Animation?

wow i love animation what a fun topic!! so awesome this is some of my favorite stuff ever – btw im discussing all of this in a purely visual sense rn just gorgeous 2d design what a genius ive drawn a lot, and thought about drawing a lot more, but i just dont have the talent of these illustrators in any way shape or form – im good at copying. whenever i look at animators sketchbooks im just like wtf. they amaze me 99% of the drawing i do is based on photographic imagery that i create, not unlike whats going on below. classic disney animation is some of the most lyrical, beautiful work of its kind to me, just delightful so, since youre already a cinematographer, you could make that work for you in all kinds of ways. and im not saying start drawing like those disney dudes... i certainly cant... you can abstract photo derived imagery almost to oblivion as an animator with powerful results that retain the gestalt of what youve shot then again something completely different i was gonna make an analogy about dons work with the simplicity of the simpsons and then i was like OH SNAP MY FAVORITE COUCH GAG (simpsons intro) this is disturbing and beautiful STILL LOVE U HOMAR "When simplicity goes head to head with complexity, simplicity will win every time" ^ example the more iconic your work, the weirder you can get. i mean this is a dog and a cat..... a dog and a cat im working on my own take on animation... its coming along but unfortunately ive failed at inventing a technique thats easy lol anyway animation +/- + beloved by people of all ages, transcends race and culture + can be done by one person + easy to be unique - hard - time consuming and as always, the age old saying "if its not on the page its not on the stage" holds true – write something you love first! thatll get you through the long nights slaving over a hot computer ? also... this was way ahead of its time

  20. These kind of videos are... useless. A nice fellow, but he just rehash what we read on the net and did not even bother going to Photokina (not that expensive), as a real journalist should do, and talk to the people from Panasonic there to get all the details and bring something that was not yet said or confirmed. Waist of time, just click bait. He could even had taken his own videos and photos of the beast instead of relying on other's work... Sorry if I sound rude, but I have (now sold) ran a modest tech website in English and French from Japan on Japanese tech and being on the go to cover press event or show like these where our first priority to get something that others were too lazy to get.

  23. Just wanted to share my anamorphic experiences on the forum in one topic for simplicity. For now I have been using : - 50D (MLRAW in 1280 x 1058 for 1.2:1 aspect ratio) - ISCO UltraStar (gold one with 1.5m minimum focus) w/ RafCamera Clamp - Helios 44-2 58/2 - Practika 135/2.8 (Industar-9 and Mir-1B are coming soon) Next items to buy IMO are : - New clamps (front and rear) as I don't like the tiny tiny screws that come with the RAF adapter and would like my clamps to be tool-less - SLR Magic rangefinder for rack-focusing ability Workflow is the following (whilst I don't find a more efficient way) : - MLVFS -> AfterEffects (CameraRaw & VisionLog) -> Premiere (dynamic link) & Lumetri -> DNxHD 4:4:4 10bit Export As I have no front clamp (yet), everything is shot without ND filter. Which is not a problem atm as I love the super16 look you get in sunny days The second video was the first time I really got to shoot at night, I have to say I enjoyed it a lot A few shots are misaligned and I saw it on the computer :s The screen of the 50D is just too tiny shooting 1.2:1 with in camera desqueeze to notice it whilst shooting) If you have advices, please do not hesitate to tell me, I'd love to hear them

  25. I was one of the very first who bought the original a99; still my most regretted camera choice ever and I've owned many. Video quiality was "VHS-like" and the lens was stuck in video mode in AF @ F/3.5 or whatever the next fastest stop the lens would offer. I got ran out of town on DPreview for mentioning this; I was happy Chris came in later on and provided actual samples that backed up my claims. Anyway I'll guarantee you stick an F/1.4 lens on this it'll only AF @ F/3.5 in video mode. For fun I put tape on the excellent Zeiss F/2 / 24 holding it wide open and the AF still worked just fine. I would avoid this like the plague - still same crappy menus and colors, and the worst mount EVER.

  27. Really, I thought the same until few days ago: I started in 2011 with Canon always in "Neutral" profile and I liked the colors but not the files. I had the 600D and then the 70D, but I used for some videos some 60D, 7D, 5D MkII and MkIII that I had from friends or rented. As soon as I "discovered" the Panasonic G6 on EOSHD.COM I sold the Canon (I had the 70D in that moment) and went for Panasonic mirrorless: G6, then GH4, and G7 replacing the G6 as second body some weeks ago. I love them, I use them every days with "Natural" Andy Lee's setting (great profile) but sometimes I need a flatter look. I've bought the Micro Cinema Camera and I like the file a lot, but I prefer the easiness of control of DSLM/DSLR, so if the EOSHD Log-C could substitute the BlackMagic flat I'm more then happy I have to run a test side by side (BlackMagic / Canon with EOSHD Log-C), but in the meantime I ask here for advices, since I did not use the Canons in the last 2 years and to me, with Andrew's profile, they are brand new cameras.

  30. There's a company that makes something called a DJ cage...I have one for a GH2 but bought a much tighter cage by a company called Viewfactor and that's where the ergonomics on the GH4 shines...1 quickmenu button above the trackpad gives you access to all exposure settings via the front and rear wheels, allowing for blind touch control once you familiarize yourself with them...one wheel for different settings and another to adjust values within the accessed setting..could not be simpler...ideally suited for a cage, and reading about even SDI connectors failing on small hd monitors on the monitor side, clamping your HDMI connector is always a must IMHO therefore a cage or at least a tripod mount HDMI clamp is a must if you're going to use a monitor/viewfinder with any of these cams...I think the DJ cage was around $249...if I can find a link I'll PM it to you Mattias

  37. Nice post, @Cinegain. Very true. It's very tough in this consumer world where we are all gearheads-cum-filmmakers not to get pushed and pulled by marketing at every turn (especially these last 5 crazy years), researching until our eyes are bleeding, when we could be jotting down some ideas for a short film or practising our lighting/camera work/grading etc. instead. I am constantly having to slap myself out of it, remind myself to stay on target, and ask myself these questions when I've been scrolling and refreshing all day and working out how I can possibly afford something: - What's my long term goal with this work? - Will this time/money spent on researching/changing gear help my long term goal? Now, if you are just here for fun and have no money problems then hell, enjoy the ride! If you are like me, making a small living with my work and trying to carve as much time as possible for speculative, creative work then I have to keep a keen eye on my time/money. Therefore, getting around to the OP. @dvcrn, I would suggest stick to your Canon for now, especially if DPAF either gives you great enjoyment or helps you achieve the results you want the fastest. There is nothing comparable to this tech yet. However, given you mentioned the EM5II, I think medium term you should keep your eyes on the EM1 Mark II, because you know full well someone will do a comparison (probably against the 80D specifically) regarding autofocus. If you like what you see, then in your position I would be super tempted to hop fully into the Olympus world and have 2 cameras that hopefully play well together in terms of colour/usability/lenses if two camera setup is useful to you. Top priorities for me when choosing cameras 5 years ago when I started my business were small, reliable cameras with lots of features so it's been GH series all the way. They've never let me down, incredible battery life and I can adapt pretty much any lens on the planet on them meaning I can prioritise investment in lenses. Also, I know Panasonic are really in touch with users so the upgrade path has been fantastic! This has given me more confidence to invest in m43 lenses and suitable rigging for these size cameras and have really enjoyed the progress through GH2-3-4 and undoubtedly 5. I feel sorry for Canon users who really love the DSLR form factor and have invested in loads of Canon glass. DPAF aside, they have not been looked after well from my perspective.

No real concrete info is out about it yet. Not sure exactly where I'd place it in terms of priorities, depends on price too, perhaps in the first half of the list.

  39. The new Olympus E-M1 mark II sounds sweet as fuck. Hope it's any good, but who knows. We all know that Canon's DualPixel AF and Sony's 4D AF is up top. A lot of AF systems still progressively focus to the back and then discover 'ah, that was one step too many' and go back to lock the focus in place just before that. That looks so silly. In the end you can make anything work, these are just tools. But it's either the budget, features, process or results that pushes you in a certain direction. A choice is the result of eliminating the other options, so pick your poison... what's worth to you the most? If you say you love mirrorless and use an E-M5II right now... I'd say, stick around for the E-M1 mark II. They've got some stuff up at https://www.youtube.com/user/getolympus/videos and sure does look impressive. Nothing wrong with Canon either. Although, usually it's the people that stick to Canon that have been using it for years and years. Not sure that many people make it their top pick these days. But, it gets the job done... if the job is to tell a story with visual imaging. If you tell your story right, it shouldn't matter what it was shot on, you can just use a potato. But what do you enjoy using the most to get it done? What gives you the best possibilities? For some it's a high frame rate, so they can do better slowmo. For some it's a bigger sensor with low megapixel count for light gathering and bokeh. For some it's color and ease of use. For some it's having something compact yet powerful. It all depends. Don't think you need to be all too worried about the glass. You can buy second hand and it will probably sell for roughly the same if you've got a change of heart...

  40. You missed the page titles under the "camera" tab. You got 12 pages because a) Sony put most of the items on the first menu level instead of a multi-level menu and b) there is no scrolling required. I have used Nikon for a while before and their menu isn't really better. And Olympus' menu also has 11 pages which are organized as vertical tabs (vs Sony horizontal tabs where you can use the left-right button to quickly move between pages). As I said before, the current grouping in Sony menu is not very intuitive and if this is fixed then there is nothing much to complain anymore.

  41. Yup, of course the Oktava MK-012 is for indoors. When I first used it... WOW! But of course I'd only had experience with low grade equipment, and/or shotguns. Yes you do need to be careful with handling noise, but using the Rycote Lyre Shockmount in the new Rode Blimp helps heaps. Currently the Oktava MK-012 (and the Sennheiser G3 units, but they're only extras for when I need a *LOT* of wireless) is the only item in that gear list which I don't own myself. But it is from a very good mate who lives just around the corner, isn't a specialist soundie himself (so it probably would be available at short notice), and has been happy to lend it to me for a free/low rate Thus I included it in my own gear list! My short term gear upgrades are (in roughly this order): Saramonic UwMic10 (I'll start with one, test it out in use thoroughly, then likely order more if it passes with flying colors) Saramonic UwMic9 + TX-XLR9 Oscar SoundTech lavs (heaps! Want more than one per wireless unit) + lav accessories Aputure D3 Extra boom pole (my current pole is a carbon fibre one that is "only" 3m long, I want a 5m one for when I need the extra reach, plus as a backup pole) Audix SCX1-HC or Audio-Technica AT4053b as the upgrade from the Oktava (need to do more research on this to decide which one of the two, ideally get my hands on them personally to try out first) Zoom F4 or F8 (although the F4 is "underneath" the F8, it is also in some ways a subtle improvement upon the F8, plus it is cheaper! So tricky to say which of the F4 or F8 I'll pick) Sanken CS-3e or I dunno.. some similar-ish high end one to replace/supplement my NTG2/D3/ME66 (but I've been suitably impressed by what I've heard with tests done with the Sanken CS-3e). Rycote Cyclone Windshield. Am not counting the various little minor accessories (such as hush heels, or top stick), the many many batteries, and various assortment of extra cables, that I'll also be always picking up along the way and buying! By this point in time it will be late 2017 or even 2018 (or later! Depends on how my fledging sound career goes), and I'll be looking into getting a smart slate, Tentacle Sync, Lectrosonics (and then my Sony UWD-P etc will be downgraded to IFBs), sound cart, Sound Devices 633, etc etc

    No HFR on new cameras?

Don't get me wrong. All the new cameras announced have unreal specs. But I'm just surprised that none of them are going beyond 60fps. It seems like a pretty big omission to me. I kind of expected that to be the next feature for this generation of cameras. Especially since we already saw some limited HFR modes in the newest rx100. Maybe the GH5 will have 120fps or higher. But I haven't seen anything mentioned about it. And none of the other new cameras seem to have any high frame rates either. I think that's the only big thing missing, and if any of them included it, it would really set it apart.

  43. We know it. 4k is a catch 22. On the one hand we love the cinematic look which tries to remove detail which would pull us out of the fairy tail into reality. On the other hand we love detail. Up to now, I don't really need 4k and I sample down to HD. For pixel peepers I provide a 4k still, which has been grabbed from Resolve. But I can tell you, the downsampled HD does almost have the same amount of detail. The following still is out of 4k footage where I just pulled the highlights a bit and applied my FilmConvert lut. No other correction was made (not even WB). The camera settings are the same as the once I posted already. If you ignore the dandruff you can see the detailed texture of the shirt.

Exactly but you forgot some A7 series has the FF and noise control GH5 the recording specs.. canon the ergonomics.. We need Olympus stab, GH5 video specs (4k60fps and 10b422), Canon colours and DPAF and ergonomics, with an A7R2 sensor and with canon lenses. Now imagine that camera ? Fully stabilized with amazing AF, amazing sensor for stills, great DoF, great everything actually. now one needs two lens system and two cameras to get 95% of this.

If it is only 2.2x vs 2x crop, I don't see much point in being able to switch between the two. But if it has a 20MP sensor, then a pixel-to-pixel 4K crop would be a significantly higher than 2.2x final crop? Which could be worthwhile, as if it then makes your lenses a wider range of focal lengths. Handy for events for instance! If I want do shoot 4K from the back of the room and need a little bit of extra reach. 100% agree! Ideally it would have full size HDMI + full size SDI But even mini HDMI + mini SDI together would be nice. Doubt any sort of SDI would happen... but even so, double outputs would be very nice! Maybe full size HDMI + mini SDI? You could have full size HDMI going out to your external recorder, plus your EVF hooked up to the mini SDI with a LUT applied (ha, if the GH5 can have LUT support! :-D ). In such cases a GH4/G7 with a fast lens will still be sufficient. We're not talking about a national level brand here! But a garage band doing a live performance, a GH4/G7 is totally fine for that. If you can't do that then: 1) you're having unrealistic expectations for a zero budget (or a few hundred bucks, same same thing) production which doesn't have to be perfectly 100% clean 2) you're not using an appropriately fast lens / focal reducer 3) you're not picking the right shots / angles for the edit Yes I would like the GH4 a stop or two faster in lowlight, but would I trade that for the higher price and limitations of a Sony? Nope, but at least that option does exist if you want to go Sony instead! Should Panasonic focus on this aspect first next above everything else? Nope, small things like crop aspect ratio markers or 4K 10bit 422 @ 60fps, or 4K DCI 24fps raw onto CFast / XQD cards, or full size HDMI, or movable EVF, keeping a low price, built in ND filters, multi aspect ratio sensor, etc etc etc.... all matter more than pushing the lowlight performance even further.

Some of my colleagues watched Hertzfeldt's stuff and just didn't get it. Personally, I love it. The way he can animate little nuances into his work is impressive. I really like his writing too, but the way he crafts it into motion pictures is the most enjoyable part.

    EOSHD C-LOG

I just bought it and what I can say... I tried for some minutes it on my father's Canon 6D and it is just AWESOME! I went far to ISO 3200 without problems! I tried only C-Log, Cinema 4 and Scarlet, in the next days I will try all the other profiles. For the moment: - C-Log is awesome, great DR no problem with shadows as I have with V-Log L recorded internally on the GH4. It's really a GIFT for any Canon user! You have to buy if you need a log profile! I'm going to try close to BlackMagic Micro Camera as soon as possible just to see differences and similarities. - Cinema 4 is a "neutral" with better colors and a slightly better DR. Great! I really like it for a 90% ready look. - Scarlet is a Fuji Velvia-like profile, with raised blacks, hyper saturated look (red blinks to my eyes) and less DR in order to have a great contrast. I think that just C-Log could cost at least more then V-Log L (it works wonders at 8 bit, instead with GH4 you have to record externally 10 bit to appreciate it), you have a lot of other great profiles, so don't wait that Andrew changes mind and buy it now! Thank you Andrew! And Canon has to thank you, because I'm really thinking to buy again a Canon just to use your profiles!

I think the scene was a little dark as her face falls into shadow from time to time. I probably could have bumped up exposure and just avoided the window blown out in the background, but it gives you an idea of the limitations in terms of dynamic range. For me, the colors are quite nice and pleasing after applying Filmconvert… before that, not so much as white balance was off due to keeping blue channel from going too low- I guess many cameras need to be tweaked. Notes: This is a video of my daughter trying to set-up a Canon Powershot A410 that I gave her. She practices from time to time and enjoys shooting. Capturing moments like this is one of the main reasons I bought the GX80 for family. Please excuse her coughing as she’s getting over the flu. Also, note that she’s constantly switching from English to French. Good luck trying to understand, but you still have an idea of the audio quality. Of the video I cut out was a portion that was probably unusable as I wasn’t holding the camera steady enough as I moved to another position. Yes, it’s prone to jitters if the IBIS goes past its limitations, but I could easily have avoided this hadn’t it been to user error (movements were simply too fast). Feel free to make comments on any of the above as I’m trying to improve everything! By the way, here’s a photo she took of me looking serious during this shoot.
