  1. Here's a still from my first shoot with the Andromeda tonight, video will be forthcoming! For a camera this old, the results are incredible. The portable laptop rig worked like a dream, and better than I could have hoped for: ::Hackintoshed PC laptop with modular SSD bay for recording (2TB SSD for shockproof, fast performance, up to 18 hours continuous recording) ::External laptop battery pack, 70,000 mAh for 7-8 hours of power-up time Once I had my settings dialed in, I could just close the lid to the laptop, set it in my special backpack and focus on getting my shots. It's incredible, and I'm looking forward to all the things I'll be able to do in the future. Footage in motion is just awesome!! Video coming soon, but in the meantime enjoy this still! 000001.tif

  6. The e2c (and the e2, to some extent) has features aimed at live streaming. They have ethernet ports on the back, and the e2c even supports POE. Much simpler to stream with than any dslr or cinema camera. No accessories required.

  7. Still getting the hang of this lut, I'm liking what I'm getting though! Nice, soft highlights and pleasant colors. Just have to make sure to remember to always custom white balance with my grey card, I tend to get lazy, especially when I'm running and gunning. Here are some shots from a recent shoot:

  8. It is not necessarily at Nikon's end of the HDMI cable. Atomos had a lawsuit with RED (which coincidentally, or not, was filed within weeks of Atomos announcing ProRes RAW recording) that was settled with them having to license RED's IP. Whether this license has created additional hurdles/costs is one potential reason for the delay as it is in the Atomos end (ie the recording of a compressed RAW signal) where any infringement would occur. Having said that, its also worth remembering I suppose that this will be the first camera that can record ProResRAW over HDMI rather than SDI so the delay could also be caused by the good old fashioned more prosaic reason of it needing a bit more work than was imagined Mind you, based on my personal experience of buying RED products in the past, that is so much a part of their brand DNA that it wouldn't surprise me if they'd patented that as well !

  9. Samsung was in the mirrorless business, but then left it at what is arguably the most disappointing timing possible for all of us here! ? Just after they had released the very excellent Samsung NX1 and NX500 Plenty of Pros used MFT as either their main or secondary system. (especially in the videography world! Tonnes of videography shooters with a GH series cameras) And I'd argue that for many amateurs then MFT is an excellent choice to consider, as most people don't want to carry around a whole backpack of photography gear! A very small bag for the camera and a couple of extra lenses is perfect to go with instead. And MFT has already far exceeded past APS-C DSLR performance (even on par with older FF DSLRs). For instance 16MP or 20MP is already far more than most people need for sharing to social media, or even for printing out family/holiday snaps. I'd happily recommend say for instance an Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a zoom and a couple of MFT primes plus a couple more adapted lenses, could be a great starting kit and great value as well.

  11. Apparently xt3 has amazing 120p. If you can live with micro for thirds gh5 has fabulous 1080p. It is oversampled up to 60p and still very nice at 120p. Also at a very nice 10 bit codec and the best ibis you’ve ever used. Again, only Micro 4/3 and lowlight sucks C100 II is so nice if you don’t need 4K. Basically perfect with everything you want. Beautiful, detailed, organic image, c-log that a two year old can grade and get good results, canon color, built in ND filter, dual xlr inputs with very high quality preamps, no overprocessing or over sharpening. If you don’t need 4K it is about as no compromising as it gets.

  12. It is referred to as sensor stack ... https://petapixel.com/2014/06/10/sensor-stack-thickness-matter/ It is why many Leica M wide angle lenses perform so poorly on Sony A7 cameras ... Here is a link to a video by Filippo Chiesa ... BMPCC4K and Speedbooster ... read his comments on AC and glow .... may be related to the stack thickness. I assume that if you use a SB it should be designed for the camera in question ... otherwise you lose the benefits of the great glass you have mounted ... the Metabones smart adapter without glass avoids the problem but you lose speed and boost in angle of view.

  13. I find the peaking on the GH5 to be quite disappointing overall. I've been in situations where the lens was focused on someones face but because I had soft lighting the peaking didn't show there, but the background had some high contrast (but blurred areas) and at the blurred transitions pixel X was quite different to pixel X+1 it did show peaking. So basically wrong on both counts. I have figured out some things though: The peaking works on the resolution of the screen, so if you use the viewfinder it works better than the screen Because it works on the resolution of the screen, the ETC punch-in mode makes a huge difference, so if you have time to set up shots then use that to set focus, then disable the mode to get back to normal framing Softer lenses can make it not show peaking, so stopping down can help If you have flare then that can reduce contrast and defeat peaking I find that the less-picky setting (can't remember if it's high or low) shows peaking on far too much so you can't tell what is in focus, unless you have crazy shallow DOF, so I use the more picky setting I map peaking to a button so that if the current setting isn't showing anything I can cycle it around to the other one In terms of focusing, for the football season I'm filming my kid and doing manual focus with crazy long lenses most weekends (280-840mm equivalent), and it can be easier to turn peaking off, open up the aperture and just use the shallower DOF to make it obvious what is in focus.

  17. This camera reminds me of a RED or an older Blackmagic camera. You get drawn in by the amazing specs and the low price considering those specs but then you end up having to buy a bunch of accessories just to make the camera usable. Yes a used gh5 would be similar priced to the total amount of the e2c with accessories, but the gh5 is overall superior. Who wants to use a gh4 sensor in 2019? Not me! apparently I accidentally quoted the previous post. Whoops!

  18. I use the GH5, GH5s, & P4Ks to livestream (multicam) many times per week and have produced literally hundreds of episodes of content with them. I used to livestream with the JVC LS300s, until I sold them all, due to poor dynamic range and poor low light performance. I am admittedly biased as I get paid to do this professionally. You can live stream with all sorts of equipment, if you know what you are doing. You can even livestream with many of the action cams if you wanted to do so. I wonder how successful they will be if they intend the camera be used for live streaming. I suspect that low-end streamers will use their phones and people who are doing this more professionally will go right past this camera for something better. For example, a low-end streamer could use a Canon M50 + encoder and have about the same amount of money invested. (not apples-to-apples, but similar $) When I am selecting a camera to use on paying live broadcasts, a *lot* more goes into the decision that just the cost of the camera. I am certainly open to looking into the camera further. Perhaps it would be great for that purpose. For me, though, I think I would just purchase the regular E2 (which I believe also streams) to get the better image quality.

  19. I actually think the peaking in my GH5 is very good. Maybe it is a personal thing. I find the peaking in the Sony cameras too pronounce. If you shot at a higher f-stop, more than likely the peaking is going to be all over the image. Using monochrome definitely helps. When I am using my SmallHD monitor, I always have a page where it is monochrome and has only peaking. So much easier to see the lines.

  20. S1 super35 looks gorgeous in VLog. It's a 1:1 4k readout and deBayer so you don't get the 6k oversample but the dynamic range is off the charts and the low light noise is still superb. I feel the S1 Super35 mode STILL matches or beats other Super35 cameras. (EVA-1 and FS7, Canon C series and Ursa) The S1 sensor is a really.....really,...I mean, REALLY damn good sensor. (This wasn't fully known until they gave us VLog last week....now it's true DR is unlocked and on display for all to see)

  22. With the very short tests I performed, with the 24-105, so DUAL IS enabled, it appeared to me on par with the G9. But I only tried very short stuffs... like static "tripod like" ones at 24 and 105, and I got the same feeling as with the G9. I found it less jerky than the Z6, but it would be logical, given the greater room for movement ! I also watched a couple of videos were it seemed to be more jerky, but it was with canon adapted lenses. I will try it more as soon as I receive my new kit !

  23. You are sort of right. In Lumix Sync App It's possible to select 10-bit but if you connect to your S1 when it's in slow motion/VFR mode you can't seem to change frame rates from within the app which is a bit odd? Other than that it seems to be fairly similar to the Image App. EDIT: Seems to be no possibility to view fullscreen in landscape mode, that is a bit annoying as they had the same issue in the beginning with the Image App. I've only tested it once so no expert, but I've attached a few screenshots. Panasonic has actually been quite good in improving their app if you make your voice heard, I'm not sure if they actually read e-mails but if you make a forum post or post in the comment section on their facebook pages (on what you are feeling is left out and why it would benefit their app) they seem to have some coordinator that takes notes and routes them to the correct people within their organisation (which is good!). My biggest wish right now from Panasonic is that they seriously would take into consideration to add manual exposure in the VFR mode, it's really bugging me because other than that it's a really good camera. I would actually pay extra to get that limitation removed ? The last screenshots is how it looks when you connect to your camera when it's in VFR mode. All frame rate options disappears.

  25. Andrew,....IBC 2019 is next month. I'm certain that it's going to be a HUGE show this year for you guys on that side of the world. I think everybody is going to drop their bomb shell all at once there. A7S-III? IBC and NAB have always been the place for this model line. Lumix S1H - full launch with 6k raw over HDMI? Nikon Z6 - raw over HDMI firmware rollout. (Atomos has CLEARLY said they the are ready for HDMI raw protocol for ProResRAW recording,...they are saying that it's Nikon's developers that they are waiting on.) Sigma - Cine camera full launch with 4k or 6k raw announcement. Atomos Ninja V- Announcement of S1 and 4k raw (super35 frame) support for the Lumix S1 and Nikon Z6. Atomos Shogun 7 - Announcement of full frame 6k raw support for the S1H and maybe Sigma. CT

  26. My "knowledge" spans 35, 40 years of doing this stuff real time. Reading Tons of articles, working with Pro people for years at times for a living. Asking real questions at rental houses, repair techs, on and on. You don't learn this stuff in a year, even 10 years unless you are some gifted as hell person. You Have to go out and do it. Experience the wins and loses. Regret the dumb ass equipment you thought was good, remember the surprises on the good stuff you bought. You learn from all of it. That is gained knowledge. I am sure I am far, far from the smartest person on here, especially with the newer stuff. But I have been there done it for probably as long as you have been alive. That's why I know and why. Why don't you read, if you can read, this little article about what Red did to Sony. And see if Red doesn't have all the power in the world to stop little old Nikon dead in their tracks. http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/343675

  34. Not everyone wants raw. I work on tonnes of sets, and I very very very rarely see raw used. (as in almost never, I can't recall the last time! I guess the last shoot I did with a RED? Although those are often highly compressed raw, not too different overall quality than someone shooting ProRes XQ etc) The Z Cam E2C is unique as there is NOTHING ELSE on the market which can do 4K 10bit internally for sub $1K

  36. Done as much or knows as much are two different things. The photography side from sensor on DSLR and smaller cameras, Nikon does know very well. - The Z6 and S1 video footage looks almost identical. Until someone shows me footage to prove that's not true then it's just lip service. - Nikon knows enough to be the first full frame camera to do 10 bit 4K external. That's before Panasonic and Sony and Canon. - I'm all ears and eyes to see that the S1 is better then the Z6. - 12 bit RAW Pro Res is coming from Nikon. So not sure what your point is. Nikon stepped up and delivered not only great spec'd video but great looking video quality. Nikon knows video now don't they?

  39. Missing the point, much? All you can blabber on about is how entertained or not you are. The real issues is ethical. Embarrassing people in a coffee shop prank to further your egotistical little immature youtube channel, for instance, is an unintelligent psychotic thing to do and if you get a kick from it, if you laugh and you don't get a bitter taste in the mouth, you need to seriously look in the mirror, and not just at yourself but at your country and your culture. Oh that makes it ok then! Tell it to the girl who thought she was on the verge of a rape and will remember that particularly salty 'prank' for the rest of her life. But it's ok because Bradberry is failing his way to the top of the media world. It's ok, a glittering YouTube career awaits and massive influence over youth culture. Wonderful. I don't know what that has to do with YouTube or idiots like Bradberry at all. People from all social classes work hard. It doesn't come down to class, it comes down to how hard you work. Some are doing more positive work than others, that much is pretty fucking evident. And some people have much less tolerance for unethical bullshit than others as well.

  40. The Internet provides a ton of solutions to many problems for many people. You can choose to focus on the bad part of it. YouTube is also a very useful tool. Entertainment is really meant to appease our more animalistic senses. We could all just be monks but where is the fun in that. Of course some amount of balance is the key. You can be very intelligent and still enjoy stupid comedy. What you enjoy laughing at isn't really a choice. Ethan doesn't only pick on big channels. Ethan Bradberry's channel is nothing in comparison to H3H3. We are talking 35 thousand views compared to over a billion on H3H3, and that doesn't include there podcast and vlog channel. Ethan from H3H3 has said his videos are mostly entertainment and not meant to be malicious and that can be seen when he has people on his podcast. I'd say this is true for most people with the exception of a couple people like Jake Paul which he clearly strongly dislikes. Its a fail your way to the top world on youtube. Do something stupid, people give it attention, and you get more views. Regardless the world has always been a terrible place. We have more resources now to live in comfort and peace than ever before. That's only a good thing in my book. Its pretty easy to forget about the internet when you unplug and spend time with working class people. Most people are just working working working to get by like its always been.

  44. Abuse pure and simple. If it's abuse and anti social behaviour dressed up as experimental comedy on YouTube, and even if idiots like @thebrothersthre3 think it's 'funny tho'... Still abuse. He's a level of psychopath up from Jake Paul. There's a line between abuse and a prank. Ask the woman in the first video believing she was about to be gang raped. And any so-called-entertainment with this level of ethics doesn't deserve our attention anyway. Even if the whole thing's faked (it's probably not, more like a mixture), I am surprised he hasn't been sued several times or even jailed. There are way too many people in this world making light of gutter behaviour, thinking it's entertainment... Reinforced my point 10x what I was making in the original topic.

  45. I agree with Andrew on this. VLog on the S1 is friggin' spectacular. It destroys the A7S, A7S-II, GH5, GH5-S and beats the FS7 with no trouble. Showdows are clean in VLog, even with noise reduction turned down to zero, there is so little noise even at 2000 ISO...even in pitch black night! (Thank you Panny for giving us actual noise reduction control!!!...I doubt Sony will ever allow that) My A7S-II used to be my "go to" low light camera but this S1 destroys it. The A7S-II's 8bit readout was always "splotchy" as Hell in the shadows and would clip the blue channel WAY to easily in SLog-3. The S1? No way,...its shadows are smooth as silk. Just super clean and highly detailed in VLog. V-Gamut protects each RGB channel beautifully too! Tell me: WHO'S SENSOR IS IN THIS THING??? CT P.s......4k raw over HDMI is coming. I have a good source on this.

  50. I loved the XT3. My only gripe was the lack of IBIS. I've managed to MacGyver my way into fitting the Ronin S on my backpack but unless I shoot higher frame rate and slow it down in post, all 24fps footage are almost unusable with my run and gun style. Even a simple pan reveal shot. I had to part ways with it in favour of S1's better low light, great IBIS, and equally great IQ. I will still use the gimbal for more planned shots. The 4k60 on the XT3 has a slight crop but otherwise it was great IQ. The thing with Fuji was their lenses breathed so heavily and their pricing really did not make sense. For example, my Panasonic 24-105 is only $200 more than the Fuji 16-55. Their not that much different in size and weight, but the Panny has OIS, longer reach, and macro capabilities. I will return to the Fuji once sort out my Panny system though. I would get the XT30 + 35mm 1.4 for street photography but in terms of video I am fully invested in the Panny S series. EDIT: To stay on topic - I am still waiting for my VLOG key in Toronto. I don't understand why they don't just email us the key. It's been 2 weeks now. I mean it was hard getting over the fact that people from Europe was getting the upgrade for free while I had to pay for it, but for it to take this long is just annoying. I would love for @Sage to make a GHA LUT optimized for the S1
