Yeah, the GH5 is a beast. Used it alongside the EVA1 and it’s no slouch! EVA1 has smoother highlights, nicer noise and motion cadence - not that most other people would notice. Have you tried @Sage‘s Alexa conversion yet? It’s absolutely nuts!! It makes the GH5 into a different camera (better!).2 points -

For Panasonic? Because it exists and is a known entity for them so they can get it out quickly and I imagine their lets just say ''close" relationship with Leica in terms of developing the existing cameras that currently sit behind it means that it will be license free as well. Plus, its already been proven through 3rd parties to be AF adaptable with EF and newer Nikon E lenses so it isn't a dead end from that point of view which will be appealing to early adopters. The potential immediate additional market for them for lenses is not just SL owners though but also owners of T/TL/TL2 and CL which shares the mount, all of whom would welcome some alternatives to a similarly limited (in terms of range not necessarily quality) and price restrictive lens line up for APS-C. For Leica, it would also act as a gateway drug for those owners to step up to an SL and ditto for SL owners to pick up a TL2 or CL as a backup camera. And also, of course, for the Leica clad versions of these new FF cameras that will follow a few months behind. For Sigma, it also means their next generation of cameras can benefit from having a mount that is less restrictive than their current SA one. Its a big win for all three of them in my view and, as I say, for early adopters of the Panasonic it takes away a lot of the concern about investing in 'yet another new mount'.2 points

I've noticed a few times this happening already, announcing but without prices. I'll deliberately mess with this plan then ? I HOPE IT IS UNDER THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS!! AS I WOULD NEVER EVER PAY MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A LENS LIKE THIS IS WHICH IS SLOWER THAN T2.8 AND ISN'T WIDER THAN 24mm!!!!2 points

A lot will hinge on the AF capabilities, rumors have Panasonic still pretending PDAF doesn't exist. A 48mp body can make waves on the stills side, but DFD is not the path to be competitive with CaNikon and Sony. IBIS, 4k60p, FF, we're getting closer to the magical "one body for everything" - but DFD means the S will still have a nasty wart. Chris1 point -

And nikon did a sony... (but sony, those clever sausages, stagger the release of A7r/ A7 to minimise the likelihood of canibalising their own sales). The same reason i suspect that nikon is keeping shtum about the z6. They dont want people to wait for the cheaper camera, they want to canibalise sony's sales, not their own) The downside there is Panasonic S. I was planning on waiting for the z6, but if I have to wait another 3 months for a hybrid camera with beefier video specs (assuming it's stills specs are on a par with my current 5-year old DSLR), then I'll have some thinking to do ) Leica has cachet in the stills world. Panasonic has tiny mind-share. Say "panasonic" and people still most likely think radios and air conditioners. This camera is taking on the big boys of stills. Therefore Having a leica mount makes the marketing folk very happy. Even if technically it's not the best move (which I dont think is true), in every other way it's a no-brainer.1 point -

Comparing the diameter of the mount is mealiness by itself, as you don't know where the sensor sits in relation to it. You need to remember we aren't talking about a cylinder of light hitting the sensor, but a cone of light, so depending on the position of the sensor the, the diameter of the circle projected on it can have different diameters. Not to mention the aspect ratio of the sensor will play a big part in the equation as well.1 point -

Also from a marketing perspective it is a brilliant move, as they get to join an "established" mount system and get some of the golden shine of the Leica fame to rub off on their budget version cameras. Exactly. Creating a "new" mount for the market will carry a lot of risks as to if consumers will accept it, so if it is even just a little established already that can help reduce fears in buyers that this new mount might not last (like NX....) because this is a mount which has already been around for a few years.1 point

Do ALL LOG Profiles Require / Benefit From Significant Overexposure?
Mark Romero 2 reacted to seanzzxx for a topic
The reason I stopped shooting Slog was the fact that by overexposing by two stops the skin tones get really pasty and thin most of the times. I much rather have good skintones than some extra dynamic range, however I agree with you on the fact that the Cine curves have terrible highlight roll off.1 point -
Do ALL LOG Profiles Require / Benefit From Significant Overexposure?
kye reacted to Mark Romero 2 for a topic
Thank you for the input. I can understand your findings. I guess the sadness for me is that the highlight rolloff of Cine4 is... how should we say it... pretty bad... So having the hghlights clip is pretty upsetting to me. Your testing seems to confirm my (rather haphazard) comparisons between Cine4 and Slog 2. There is not a whole lot more DR in a SLOG2 shot that has been overexposed by two stops. It seems that the main benefit in this case is that SLOG2 gives a less harsh rolloff though. All other things being equal, in regards to skin tones, would you say that Cine4 at 0 EV gives better skin tones than SLOG2 at around +2 after grading? Or are they about equal? You said with regular grading they both look about equal, so i am assuming that also refers to skin tones being on par with each other when exposed optimally. (I haven't been able to test on skin tones really.) Yes, that is definitely a concern. Cine4 is much easier to use in the field (on an a6500) but the rolloff is nasty. Even using in-camera LUT (I don't know what sony calls it exactly... gamma assist???) when shooting SLOG2 the issue is that they recommend switching OUT of SLOG when doing your white balance, which is really difficult on a gimbal with the tiny buttons on an a6500. Thanks for your input. I think the "real question" for me, though, is maybe more along the lines of, "is it worth it to step up from a budget 8-bit camera if I want to shoot log / get more dynamic range"? Admittedly, I did only allude to prosumer cameras. Hopefully that won't dissuade people from sharing findings about some of the more affordable cine cameras though. Yes, wave forms or false color would make it a lot easier, I believe, as would just having a larger, brighter, more detailed screen. (The screen on the a6500 is pretty useless).1 point -

bsalisbury reacted to CyclingBen for a topic
Sorry sorry sorry sorry In my last post I missed a key bit of information. The 27mm pancake lens continuous auto focus is improved but still not good enough for video. The other lenses I tried in my quick hour with camera yesterday and this morning (35mm, 18-55, 18-135 and 55-200) are all improved from the X-T2 and X-H1 and have pretty smooth transitions without changing any of the sensitivity settings. Sorry for the confusion. @Brian Williams is absolutely correct I was only referring to the 27mm pancake lens On another note I shot some footage in 24p 4k and 120p this morning of some ducks on a lake at sunrise with the 18-55. The 120p looks very nice. Here is a quick snap from VLC player, hopefully it does it justice.1 point -

Log is forced under exposure. Thats how it works. Thats why it says iso800 when its really iso100. Its a lower iso pushed to a higher average brightness, but it says iso800 to make you expose lower. Thats how you get more highlight latitude. How else could you get it? It cant be magiced up from nowhere. So if three stops of extra latitude is too much and you'd rather have just two with cleaner shadows then, sure, over expose a stop in log. But if you're over exposing by two stops (definitely 3) you may as well just shoot in normal gamma because you are throwing away everything log gives you anyway.1 point

yeah thanks guys thats what im doing. i uprezzed the whole thing using Resolve's super scale from 1080p to UHD, and it look surrprisingly good _ awesome feature~! ill just experiment with uploading the problem scenes like u said @kye runnin it thru after effects with a 4% noise adjustment layer added in 32bit color seemed to help a lot... ill experiment lol1 point

I have my X-T3, and think the video AF is great, at least with my 18-55. I mean I wouldn't use it if I was shooting a short film, but for everyday use (chasing my kids around), I think it's excellent, better than my old A6300 and light years ahead of my GH5. I'm thinking maybe CyclingBen was referring specifically to that pancake lens in terms of inadequate video AF? Well bless you then, I absolutely look forward to the day when I have the self control to keep a camera more then 8 months, much less two years or one and a half years. Hopefully age will affect me the same way, because it's exhausting now. (Or I need to figure out a way to become wealthy enough to afford more than one camera at a time). ((Anyone looking to buy an excellent condition RX1Rm2 to help me pay off this X-T3?))1 point -
