    GoPro Karma

Well...it kind of was to be expected that the Karma wouldn't be as stable in the air or have all the flying features DJI has developed over the years. But the point where GoPro totally dropped the ball imo is by not having improved the codec and overall IQ over the 2 year old GoPro 4... That was the one thing they had going for themselves and they chose to leave it completely untouched..shame.

I looked at the video's thumbnail and saw the Karma fully extended sitting next to the Mavic completely folded so I can already guess which one the author is biased towards.

  4. My 2 cents OIS on the 16-50 is good, nothing really to write home about but on par with what you would expect from a "professional" lens. For photos you can easily get sharp photos 1/30 at 16mm and 1/50 at 50mm but I wouldn't really push it much further than that. I have never really notice the effects of lens stabilization in video most likely because I never shoot below 1/50. DIS I found to be quite useful when I was using a makeshift dolly and sliding a tripod across a table lol. OIS combined with DIS seams to work really well with a glidecam. But I cant really speak to how it compares to real 5 axis IBIS witch from what I have heard is amazing for steadycam shots.

Yeah, the DVX100 def got a mojo to it. Remember being so angry I never got to try it, only had a consumer canon mini-DV. Used some Panasonic eng camera first year in film school (don't remember the model name), but it too had something, even if it was 50i only: Second year we had the RED One, everyone was fighting for it except me. I prefered the Sony HDCam we had, despite the small sensor, upsampled 3:1:1 image. My DP hated me for choosing that camera everytime haha.

  6. I like pond5. Can't compare them to musicbed as I haven't used that site. But I've found a range of good stuff on pond5 after a little bit of clever searching. I like to search for a specific artist that I want something to sound like, rather than general tags which are overused. For example, I've searched for "Bon Iver" rather than "folk", with good results. Also, has anyone checked out this: http://www.dvinfo.net/article/post/first-look-music-vine-a-fresh-new-music-licensing-platform-for-filmmakers.html

  7. Hey Luca, finally received email due to end of fundraising directing me to profile page to enter address (https://www.produzionidalbasso.com/account/edit-profile) I entered my phone number in the same line as the street address. I will be going for vacation on December 15th, so if it arrives between the Dec. 15th and January 20th or so then I will not be able to receive it and they will probably ship it back to you. If it is without the phone number they will also ship it back to you as they will not be able to reach me so that I can collect the package. ... I have been waiting until the start of the next year to get a PO box to receive with them because they charge for a whole calender year regardless of when you get it (e.g. so if I got it now it would be only for 2 months and I would pay for the entire year). This is if your are sending via normal mail that arrives at the post office, some others through FedEx and DHL can deliver to the home depending on the class/type of mail service requested. Sorry for the complicated shipping situation. Kisaha, I'm looking forward to it as well.

  8. I don't find Phantom 4 any better than Mavic. I find Mavic better than the phantom 4, gopro, etc with their oversharpened settings. I agree with Pavel.

  9. in my opinion, Phantom 5 or 4 pro will move onto such camera tech, which then leaves room for mavic 2 to take the place (in terms of image quality) of current Phantom 4. i think DJI wants certain image quality differentiation between mavic and phantom. im hoping DJI is moving towards modular design for all their lines, for example. you can choose different body (payload) to fit your budget/weight requirement then based on that, you can choose certain camera head. e.g. let say there is a X1 camera, then mavic cna take x1 and x3, then phantom can x1, x3 and the lighter x5. then inpsire 1 can take x1, x3, x5 and x5r etc.

  10. I just hope that DJI will upgrade their cameras/sensor in Mavic/Phantom. There is no way to upgrade camera on Mavic so (according my opinion) its camera should be better than 2 years old GoPro 4 sensor with just 60Mbps. I do not understand why DJI can still use quite old technology if sensors in smartphones are still better and better every year (and they can handle higher bitrate than 60Mbps). I just wish that there will be Phantom or bigger Mavic one day with similar technology which can be seen in Sony FDR X3000: 4K with 100Mbps + just 8Mpx sensor with "big" pixels + OIS (we can see little shakiness sometimes on Mavic's footage, so why there cannot be OIS if it is in smartphones (?)). These specs together with 1,5x or 2x zoom lens.... that would be my dream drone. Mavic is really great but I will rather wait ;-)

I've always loved lo-fi video and music. This is a re-edit of a short I shot in 2005 with a Canon GL2 (my first prosumer camera): And of course I shot my first feature on the DVX100. I still kinda like the look of it. This was the movie-within-the-movie of my first feature, shot on the Panasonic GS90:

  14. From new buyers with their fresh videos (the first ones, as for instance, plainly shows where the footage can shine and where not mainly because of a limited codec with such low bitrate : ) Two clips with Bloom's settings: I find it even funny when people complain about sharpness. With this last one, for example, I am using a laptop display 1366 pixels wide. I need to go from 1080p file to 720p file if I want avoid aliasing. To those who haven't seen yet the Cinema5D review, still from Lisbon DJI event: And the next ones to those who have wondered about its narrative use. Tagged as Mavic Pro aerial footage: :-)

last new topic for the day, I promise. Sometimes I’m just a sucker for a small sensor and oversharpening... I think Shameless (UK) looks amazing (no idea what it’s filmed on). Same with It’s Always Sunny (dvx100). Any suggestions for cameras with this charm? Just out of curiosity? Possibly some mini-dv... Or are there other flavors of charming digital you want to make me or anyone aware of? Maybe just workflow tips - digital noise overlays, low DR curves, etc? If anyone else even shares the opinion that crappy digital can be sexy

Soft soft soft soft always looks good. the closer and bigger the diffusion, the softer. Shot on the F65 with a zeiss standard speed lens 100mm.

  18. If that's the case, the problem is the GX85 provides far superior stabilization for video.

  26. Personally I don't liken to use DIS as it can be unpredictable with its stabilization artifacts. I did a quick side by side comparison one time and I'm pretty sure the digital crop lowers image quality very slightly. But nice looking footage man! @kidzrevil I think the OIS is pretty good on the 16-50s all throughout the range. Not the absolute best ois I've used in a 24-70 equivalent zoom but it works good for nice natural looking shots.

  28. Well, I think it's an awesome camera, other than its lack of mic input, it's better than the G7, I am just starting over with video altogether. I have collected and tested a bunch of cameras and lenses over the past year and a half, and I want to simplify everything. I don't do any professional work, so I need less equipment. I do have some modest narrative goals I am working towards, but now that I have tested a lot of these consumer cameras, I am fairly certain what I need equipment wise to help me reach those goals... And it isn't much. Also, I have some small projects where I am kinda interested in using a point and shoot camera, so the LX10 is on my radar and even a consumer camcorder for another project I have in mind.

  29. Awesome! waiting for a payment from a sidejob so I will let you know! thank you. I shoot kids a lot and sometimes I need auto setting everything with a zoom/autofocus. (instead of drowning in technicals and missing a shot) I was trying to stay with the same manufacturer, but will look at Oly 12-40 again. As far as 15mm, pana leica 1.7. I do have manual focus lenses when I have extra time, but sometimes I need that autofocus indoors with kids.

@IronFilm Yeah, not many compositing tricks - other than the occasional split screen trick that you can do inside an NLE (to mix different takes into a single shot). So a considerable chunk of the budget on that video would have gone on the drum kits! Late 90's - early 00's there were a load of great music videos from Spike Jones and Michel Gondry as well as a load of great documentaries shot on DV or DVCAM. I think nowadays it is refreshing to see prosumer video from that time period - since everything now looks technically superior. But as with what happened with super 8 and 16mm - early video formats can now invoke a similar nostalgia or 'low-fi chic' if chosen for the right project. Back in the day people were starting to try to make video look more like film - with mini 35 DOF adaptors and magic bullet de-interlace plugin...but the reality is that the video can look more interesting nowadays, if it's left as crusty as it can be. I remember when this was number one in the music charts for many many weeks...I remember thinking that all the broadcasters must have hated showing such a rough looking video, but at the time is was mesmerising to see a music video presented this way...3 years before YouTube existed.

    Nikon Mystery Solved!

I just got a D500 to complement my other FF Nikons and it's a sweet little camera. I don't really notice that it's not full frame, and it matches my D750 so well that I have to check to see which files came from which camera. I'm mostly a stills guy, but I have shot video jobs with the D750 and I like the video I get from it, it's got a really efficient codec but there's still a little bit of room to grade, and once I get the loupe on the screen I don't miss peaking at all.

  34. The biggest advantage of FCP X is performance. I edit 4K clips like butter. Fearing Apple prices, I tried Da Vinci Resolve, but in my same Macbook it runs like shit with Full HD files. And price, I bought FCP X when it came out for 180€, I have been using it for five years. Not even 40€ a year for a pro program!!!

There is another topic here about issues of the Panasonic body and lens stabilizer. Have you not have your NX1 anymore Kidz? The S is an amazing lens, I haven't test it's stabilizing abilities yet (there is dual IS too but I have never used DIS, ever), but the optical qualities of the lens will probably please you. I still believe that a C100ii with the 18-135STM is the best run n gun system these days, but I am closely follow these small Canon cameras!

  41. This is controversial-ish, but I feel after looking at Premiere that in comparison to FCPX it's pretty "old-school". Not that old school is bad. FCPX is clearly a lot more modern with the way it's constructed and performs. More of the critical non-users are bashing it again. Ridiculous really. It's an ace editor, and in my opinion, the best.

The Sony Vx1000 is still extremely popular in the skate community. The 4:3 aspect fisheye is wider and the model built for that is a better than any other camera ever. Really nice audio and the color has a filmy kind of highlight roll. Nice looking warm colors. Here's a piece I did, mixed with S8 and 16mm.

  44. Indeed. It is not the first time this has been noticed. Because of manual focus? Lens design flaw/issue (remember that's not rare or it is even common to occur with anamorphic lenses, mostly affordable ones) or QC case to comprehend only a part of the production as same as seems to have occurred with Nokia Lumix 1020?

    TERRA 6K Footage

Thanks for sharing. It's incredible strong footage, you just have to look at the histogram. Even after torturing it doesn't fall apart. It's almost a punishment to get back to GH4 footage after playing what comes from the terra. Luckilly the BMPCC gives a bit of the terra feel

  47. It really depends. If your handholding technique is good and/or you use a cheap shoulder rig, you can get pretty usable handheld with no IS, provided you use a reasonable focal length. I do so regularly with my 12mm and 17mm lenses, and even got a few nice 25mm handheld shots on the BMPCC (although it takes on a little Paul Greengrass "nervousness" at that point). Narrative tends to be almost entirely on sticks, dollies, and cranes, so I don't see the lack of IS as a deal-breaker if I like the camera in every other regard. Building it up a bit will also give it a more "professional" handheld look, as the added inertia will resemble what you get with a larger cinema camera (think Breaking Bad).
