  1. lol at pixel peeping license plates from a mile away. these kinda tests always crack me up.. do a skin tone test in mixed lighting and we'll see who comes up on top!

@Oliver Daniel Thanks Oliver. Looking at his previous posts, I think he might be referring to luts for LogC, and was confused about what you meant I hope people will find it worth it, and consider my own personal investment to get it to where it is today. I believe in doing free updates and personal service because I want people to have the best, and to do right by the people who put their faith in me (no matter what or how long it takes)

  11. What kind of joke is this? Another reason I am very happy I left Europe a few years ago for the US. I make more money, everything is more simple and this freaking law does not exist. People don't do strikes every day, and are nicer too. There are many things wrong in the US especially in politics and craziness (guns,...). But on a daily basis in the real world, it's far better than Europe. At least until I get shot . And I have traveled to tons of countries and lived multiple years each on 4 different continents.

  12. In camera corrections do not fix edge softness and infact due to the correction warping of the image they often make it worse. This is simply a physical phenomenon of lens exit pupil position in relation to the sensor, a difference in sensor filter thickness and the larger sensor of the P4k. Also some lenses are very good at their widest setting and wide open - my OL12-40 2.8 is sharper at the edges and corners than my 12-35 2.8 and 12-60 2.8-4 even when these are stopped down to optimum apertures. I do however worry that these lenses when used on the P4k where they are not corrected for distortion and CA will not look great. I'll find out tomorrow when my camera arrives ( or Monday...)

  13. Pixel peeping is alive and well I see! Nikon Z7 is fine. It is a miracle in full frame from 8.2K down to 4K. Very nice detail level. Very good dynamic range and colour, which Max's test doesn't even touch on. Z7 in APS-C is similar but less aliasing / stair stepping - but we are talking 4K here, so at normal viewing distances you don't even see the aliasing in full frame mode, let alone in the oversampled Super 35 mode. The EOS R is soft. So what. It's 4K. You have more detail than you'll ever need unless cropping 4x into the image. You wanna know why I don't do tests like this very much anymore? 1. Nobody views your film or music video at 400% crop. The absolute sharpness level in 4K means JACK SHIT. What you want is a soft stable cinematic image - not hard digital sharpness. In fact it's an *advantage* to have a softer image for YouTube, when the player is scaling it down to fit any number of screen resolutions - especially a 1080p screen. It looks more natural when people view it downscaled or even on a 4K TV from normal viewing distances. In the first case the downscaling works badly with a digitally sharper, harder image vs a softer, more cinematic one. In the second case the natural downscaling from the human eye at a longer viewing distance makes a less hard 4K image at 1:1 look more natural and less fatiguing than a "harder" image which shows more emphasised detail. We have plenty enough detail in 4K as it is, even on the EOS R and to overemphasise it, like in Max's video, is a BAD THING. 2. The test by Max claims to be about image quality when he's only testing one small aspect of it and not even very well. He's actually looking 90% at the sharpening levels in the menus, rather than outright performance of the image. All the cameras apply a different level of sharpening to bring out extra detail. You can dial it down or up. So what? How natural and cinematic does that fine detail look to the real viewer? That is the real question. 3. Max's video tests just one aspect of the camera and seems to imply it's 90% of what makes a good image. A wide shot of a building with constantly shifting light at dusk so that not even the lighting conditions are matched on each comparison shot. It says nothing of colour, dynamic range, skin-tones, lenses, sensor size, rolling shutter, motion cadence, codec performance, macro blocking, mud, compression, grading, bit-depth, LOG profile performance and how easy or not it is to grade. These are the things that determine the final result. These are the important things and not ONE in isolation but ALL together. Go back and do a proper test Max that takes you longer than half an hour... But no, he's got subscriber numbers and viewers to chase so it must be done quick! Why the Z7 is singled out for criticism because of Max's test is beyond my understanding. It justifies the pricing over the A7R III because it is a flat out better camera in every aspect of image quality and handling. It justifies the pricing over the D850 because it adds video AF which actually works, gets rid of the mirror, fixes the ergonomics in live-view, shaves the pounds off and at the same time maintains the incredible video quality.

  14. All of the IBIS systems I have seen to date seem to occasionally introduce a weird warping effect into the footage. It is unpredictable and can often times ruin otherwise great shots. I just prefer to have more control. If something it going to go wrong when I'm filming, I want it to be my fault... that way I have the power to fix it.

  15. OK. Fair point about the price. I do agree that the Z7 was mispriced. Hard to see how they could justify pricing it above the D850 or A7riii. I still think it is a promising first effort though. I do also think you are right about Canon. There is something about Canon's 'non-professional body' and 'fancy mirrorless lenses' that smells of trying to persuade you to avoid mirrorless altogether at the moment..... ...I mean who thought that producing the largest and heaviest 50m lens and 28-70 zoom was a good idea to match with the inherent advantages of a lighter and smaller mirrorless camera?

  16. This is such a bad argument. First of all Nikon and Canon are supposed to know how to make a camera already. It’s not their first camera at all. Secondly, it’s not about the generation number, it’s about which generation year it is. So if Olympus releases in 2025 a FF camera when everyone is doing 8K60p, because it’s their first generation you expect It to be what, a 2015 competitor ? Non sense. All those company have been doing cameras for years and have access to the same things. So no, there is no reason at all that because they did not have a FF mirrorless before, that it should not match competition. It’s even easier for them because they can analyse easy where Sony failed and won, and can develop the camera accordingly. They can see people yelled at Sony for 1 SD port, so they can just put 2 (well they didn’t). NO EXCUSE, especially for Canon. I agree the Z7 is a great camera I was just disappointed at the test from Max. But the camera in general is great, unlike the EOS R joke.

  18. I’ve had 3 copies of the iscomorphot 8/1.5x over the years, two with optics in fair to heavily used condition that I took apart to re-grease the helicoids...one lens that I owned was totally pristine. All lenses were soft unless taking lens is fairly heavily closed down with better performance on smaller sensors. I found that the characteristic ‘bloom’ softness that the lens has is a limitation of the front focusing optic. It is of not of a sufficient design that was intended to resolve sharpness at wide apertures on sensors with an equivalent gate size that is larger than for 8mm film, and the relatively thin edged optic can easily create a bloom on highlights that infect the whole image...as well as some CA on high contrast edges. On used copies of the lens, it is common for the edge blackening of that front optic to loose its black and accumulate micro scratches...resulting in even more contrast drop and apparent softening of the image. Overall, I really don’t think the lens is worthy of the ‘Baby Iscorama’ name...IMHO the smallest lens that exhibits the most comparible optic quality to an Iscorama (pre-36) - is the iscomorphot s8/2x (fixed focus). Same golden coating, zero CA and lovely balance of sharpness and defocus render. The iscomorphot (and it’s bigger non-MC brother 16/2x) are of course 2x, but they have enough of a complimentary look to the Iscorama 36/42/54 family, footage can be easily intercut when mixing lenses. The ‘baby Iscorama’ 8/1.5x however would stick out like a sore thumb in a lot of scenarios if wanting to match the look of the Iscorama clan...the sharpness and edge performance is just is not there, unless using a small aperture on the taking lens.

  19. The current used price of one is about £3200 but Sony have just cut the price of new ones so expect the price of the used ones to dip under your £3K budget. With regard to the FS700, it might be 5 years old but I can't think of anything thats come along in that time that gives you the same performance options from a Super35 sensor and certainly not for anywhere near the £1200-1400 price that you can buy a used FS700 for. In this instance, I'd take the 5 years as a positive as everyone moving on to new and shiny things has chipped away at the price of the FS700 in a disproportionate way compared to its actual performance. There is an interesting retrospective of it here : https://www.redsharknews.com/production/item/4604-sony-fs700-camera

  20. Because we live in age of Sensor stabilization, good battery life and good video autofocus. That convenience over raw quality output. I had a ursa mini 4.6k and when I got a a7rii initially for photo... well I sold the 4.6k. I think you are right about the pocket 4k as B/crash cam for URSA pro users, but very few production run that setup, I always see canon C series or FS series for small/mid sized jobs, I only saw a handfull of blackmagic on production and is usually a random single guy run and gunning , not a small crew. I see the pocket the same way I see people speaking about LOG profiles, sounds cool on paper, but most user will have no clue how to use it properly, will end up blaming the camera because it s relatively cheap. Personally I think RAW is overkill for the majority of work I do ( prores-raw sound much more workable) so I always end up in prores LT or standard. I had seriously considered the pocket 4k as well , but then I got a a7iii + ninja V, Being able to focus track faces, with a steady shoulder rigged 135mm at 2.8 in full frame, without a focus puller is priceless IMO. In the end I have a much higher production value for a single operator with this kind of equipement than any traditional cinema camera .

  22. Mattias, I get you just like the Canon image, but I feel it’s because of people like you that Canon get away with the absurdity they do. In this day and age with the technological advancements made in the field, Canon should be doing more but deliberately choose not to. We could/should have a much richer and detailed image full frame 4K (downsampled 6k) WITH the choice to to turn down sharpening for a less detailed image at the very least! Canon with all their money and R&D should be able to acquire the best chips and sensors to fit the purpose. With their large market share and projected sales should be able to negotiate all this at better cost than some of their rivals. They choose to do none of this but screw us and sell us outdated tech for even more money increasing their margins all the while. Yes I too like the canon image because it was easy to get good colour but today that advantage is minimal to non existent. Canon really needs to be forced to step up and deliver. I feel they are now feeling the pressure but as we can clearly see with the Eos R, they are still trying to resist. There’s so much wrong with that camera that colour science just can’t cover up but when people like you keep spewing that mantra, or ‘soft is actually better’ nonsense, there is no progression. I love magic lantern and what they did for the community and us canon faithful, but I can’t help feel that if it had never happened Canon would have been forced to deliver much earlier.

  23. Downsampling ( if properly implemented) will always result in better resolution than a 1:1 crop so I'm not surprised the P4k isn't as good in resolution terms. However Resolution is probably the least most important factor of cinematic image quality.

  25. This is the video I wanted @Andrew Reid to make. I have to say the Z7 is quite disappointing. I am also disappointed by XT3 120p cause it does not look really better than the Sony. The Canon I fully expected that. But man, what a disaster! This is so embarrassing for Canon. This company should go bankrupt. No one should pay that much for getting such disgusting results. And thanks god he did not do rolling shutter tests! 2.5K for worst rolling shutter, worst 4K, worst 1080p, worst slowmo, and insane crop? Thanks, but no thanks. This company is a joke.

  31. It is all about censorship and control. I am in the US. It is definitely happening here. Some companies are banned from Youtube, Twitter, etc. The terms of use, by these companies are very vague. They define what they mean, but don't have to tell us. They just send an email. You broke the rules. We've banned you. Hateful speech, nudity, unpopular views, copyright, right of privacy. Now in Europe, they are adding the treat of lawsuits from the public, advertisers, property owners. Of course the result will be that the government has the right to view, censor and stop any content that they don't like. As a small business owner, I am scared of lawsuits. I have friends who have gone out of business because of nuisance lawsuits. Even if you are right and win (years later), the costs of attorneys, time spent and the worry can drive you out of business.

Likewise - and when it comes time to shoot, it'll be the GH5 (and P4K @Téodor Spencer) for me. Your feature will be amazing, I have no doubt. Ah, I can't wait to see it! Yea Linear adds that bit of flexibility, which I think was a needed option. I'll be shooting trees in the sun today, just for fun lol (first chance to breathe) Indeed, that is that the higher ceiling really 'clicks' with film, I think due to the nature of the color sci, and the halation. Whereas the Sicario ceiling plays to the GH5's strengths, so to speak (btw, try linear )

  38. Just a note that the 'soft edges' discussion on BMC user has moved forward significantly. Kin869 has uploaded loads more examples. The upshot is that (unless his camera is an exception) if you are using a non telecentric wide angle lens (native or speed boosted) and you shoot a wide shot you will probably see an edge softness issue at any aperture wider than f5.6.
    1 point
  39. yeah I said Im not sure what benefits there are, thx for listing them though. Not for mocking me... From this list i'm not sure the color science is better then the pocket 4K though. I always like the fuji colours while shooting stills, but I have not seen any great fuji video's yet.

  40. What about turning sharpening down or off on the nikon? He probably also forgot to turn off "clarity" setting in the picture style which adds a lot of false micro-contrast. In fact all the nikon videos I see keep doing these begginer errors. I would have liked a comparison between the DX mode and the rest, because that one will be indicative of how the z6 will look.

  42. The CEO of Z Cam told me in the FB forum yesterday that ProRes 10 bit 4:2:2 internal is "100% happening" and when I asked him on a timeline he said "weeks". Not sure if that mean 40 weeks or 4, but that is what he said. They released this yesterday too. He said the triple native ISO (which seems like bad marketing) is that the native ISO is 200 and 800, but when they do wide dynamic range (which does look promising for static shots like interviews in front of windows) the native is iso 80. If E2 really gets ProRes 422 internally and starts to lower their price closer to GH5 levels, I think it could be a real rival to the Pocket. Lots of people like me just don't really need or want RAW, but they do want ProRes 422. And 5 inch 1080 monitors are so cheap now, having an articulating one is just such a huge advantage. I've said many times I'd actually pay more money for a Pocket 4k camera that doesn't have a screen (battery would last probably 2x as long)!

  46. Vimeo sucks a big one, always has. For the base upgrade of $84 a year, you get a whopping 5GB a week. Someone has to break it to them that YouTube has been offering unlimited uploads since...forever, and was like 2-3 years ahead of Vimeo in offering basic things like 4K, again, always free. Vimeo video search is beyond terrible, with very limited filter options. And they do all the most annoying tricks where, rather than add value to premium options, they strip away very basic functionality from the free product, like having to wait in an arbitrarily long queue to get to see your uploaded video, and only 500MB per week, a pathetic sum. Vimeo has the best encoding, but for everything else it's a total scam.
