Sorry to hear that, makes you realise what's really important! Very true and it's so relentless, there's a new temptation around the corner every few weeks. Easy to get hooked. These companies are spending millions on getting us hooked. Just like us, they're never satisfied either. It's like in home audio... Eventually you will end up with an end-game, which is perhaps 5 or 10% better than what you had mid-way through the spending spree. I am going to review the E-M10 III next. $500 camera. I'm going to use that instead of the Pocket 4K, forget raw. I'm going to go out, have fun with strange Russian lenses, and appreciate how short life is and how the time is better spent with family than with disposable consumer goods.3 points -

If high mirrorless video specs hurt pro cinema range, why does Sony do it?
webrunner5 and 2 others reacted to newfoundmass for a topic
It's probably a mix of both, honestly. They haven't innovated in the DSLR/Mirrorless market in a long, long time. DPAF is the exception, but they've been falling behind tech wise for so long. They have hardly even improved their 1080p over the last 8 or so years; its still a soft, muddy image even as cameras a fraction of their price produced very good 4k video. Between not wanting to hurt their C-line and being comfortable coasting along/not devoting resources to the DSLR/Mirrorless market, they've now found themselves behind technologically I think. I dare say that might even be the reason they ended up giving the EOS R C-Log and external 10 bit 4:2:2, because the rest of their offering was essentially dated tech based on a dated sensor that apparently isn't capable of performing at the same standards as their competitors.3 points -

Why the camera press need to grow a pair of balls
Fredrik Lyhne and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It isn't the logo that's the problem really, it's the relationship which put it there. As soon as you have a personal friendship or a business relationship, you have inherent bias. I don't expect these relationships not to exist, it would be very unrealistic. However the internet is clearly evolving in a worrisome direction, where the sites with the most followers have the prime positions in our research via search engines and on YouTube, are the sites MOST under the influence of the manufacturers. I think the influence of the content with 'lifestyle aspirations' is eroding credibility as well. There's a reason so many hands-on sessions now happen under tightly controlled conditions organised by a PR company - so they can shape the editorial visually, and make it glossier. Again here there is a balance to be had. It is unrealistic to expect the DPReview team to post only pictures of ducks. When a camera company once reached out to me, they invited me to such an event and I said no. I told them I'd rather just have the camera on my desk, that's all I need. They said it "isn't something we do". I think that was Sony. Once, Canon reached out - after a more positive blog post - and gave me a 5D Mark IV to review for a few days. Honestly it was very nice of them, but because I didn't feel like trashing it and throwing their effort back in their face, I just decided to send them back the camera and say nothing. I think you all know my opinion of video on that camera anyway. It's not good. And I don't need any pressure on my to either say nothing, or only the positive stuff (that would have been a very short blog post). I think if negative reviews are to be extinct, customers less knowledgable (what's a 4K 1.8x crop?!), brands more powerful and marketing disguising itself as editorial to the point where it is absolutely normal and accepted, then the internet has basically been bought by the corporate world. And we cannot allow that to happen. By the way, the absolute worst site for corporate influence for cameras in my opinion, is Cinema5D.3 points -

Honestly? I don’t know why you bother. But let me explain... some of your videos have inspired me to be better than I naturally am. Your GH1 video in the Buddhist monastery is one of the nicest videos floating around since the dslr revolution. Your BMCC video at the abandoned amusement park is one of my favorite videos from that camera. Even your simple but fun video of the FZ1000 led me to eventually buy its successor, the FZ2500 (even though you disliked that upgrade) so why eff around with this nonsense when you can be out creating? If you were making money from this site... I’d get it, but why hang out with a bunch of know it alls (myself included) and armchair professionals when you could be working on a feature film and using your money to finance that? Just my opinion. I’d miss the site but I’d understand your reasoning.2 points

I might stop the forum. In the end it's about you guys... I tried to set up a decent site for you to get information about cameras. Over the years I haven't wavered. Day in day out, I have spent thousands of pounds on equipment, kept shooting, kept blogging, even when I found it exhausting. For what? For some snide Napoleon remarks and shitty comments like that from Cinegain who has been a member and follower since as far back as 2014. What kind of gratitude level am I dealing with here. Sometimes I spend hours a day reading this forum, and I don't want to read comments like this, quite frankly. So closing it down would lighten my mood. It's not about ego. Would have been a simple courtesy for Blackmagic to keep me in the loop on the Pocket 4K camera, due to the amount of interest in it from you guys on my site, which yes I do appreciate but it goes both ways. They have had months to get in touch. It's not up to me to go chasing like a poodle. I can't support you with a site, if you don't support me. If I had gone to that event to interview Blackmagic and try the camera, It would be to the benefit of of you, you'd have more info about the camera. It would be to the benefit of you, if they got involved, however small, and helped me out here. I will now be the last to shoot with this camera, and I feel very much down and sad about that, after 5 years of buying Blackmagic cameras and all the articles, shoots, Speed Boosters, lenses, c-mount glass, Resolve tips, forum posts, music videos, Berlin stuff, and so on. The way I am thinking right now, in this rather down mood I am in, is why do I even bother, quite honestly. Hours and hours and hours of work is not even worth a message of support from my own followers.2 points -

Andrew, you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Blackmagic really don't owe you anything for any 'free publicity'. Their Pocket 4k has started a frenzy among the camera world stirring up conversation and leading people to discuss it on forums, maybe you owe Blackmagic for making your site and this thread so popular? Maybe you owe all of your forum members here for contributing all their content here and making this site popular. Maybe you owe John Brawley for his contributions, I know I read this thread mainly because of his input and presence here...... Silly, I know, but the tantrum you seem to be throwing could also be seen as a bit silly too. Seems like nothing really new came from the event and maybe BM didn't think you would want to do an unboxing video...? Your reaction here only serves to diminish your character and reputation and by snubbing the camera based on you not receiving a pre prod version for testing or not being invited to one event. It might also suggest that you can be easily bought which is not what most people want out of an online reviewer. Who knows, maybe a marketing person at BM didn't think it appropriate to invite someone who seems brand focused by being call EOSHD? There are so many reasons why you may have not received an invite.... Just my 2c.2 points -

Though honestly, maybe... be better at networking? Don't have to go as far as these self-proclaimed YouTube reviewers that are mostly asslickers. But for sure keep tabs, keep on the radar. I'm not gonna get upset if I'm not invited to Timmy's birthday party and refuse a treat when he does a round of treats in class because of it. That's a little petty. That's just the industry, I mean... must not be the only company not inviting you to these hands-on events. Seems Kai was in London for the Canon EOS-R event... were you there as well? Got invited at all? It's like skipping dinner as a protest because earlier on you weren't allowed to eat a cookie. A bit unnecessarily stubborn. If high mirrorless video specs hurt pro cinema range, why does Sony do it?
newfoundmass and one other reacted to IronFilm for a topic
That is true all the way down.... many people own a 5D when a 70D could serve their needs perfectly well. And plenty of 70D owners who don't do anything with it that a Canon Rebel couldn't do. And ditto many Rebel owners who might as well have just stuck with their smartphone! Or they could have rented a GH5, and put that spare money into renting lights etc and paying their crew Was DoP on a shoot earlier this year in which the director had already arranged renting a RED Weapon, am glad I talked him into instead using 2x Sony PMW-F3 and hiring lights + crew. I'm guilty of this too! Not just cameras, but buying more sound gear than I really truly "need" right now.2 points -
Sony 31MP APS-C sensor with GLOBAL SHUTTER might be coming to A6700
webrunner5 and one other reacted to Cinegain for a topic
Would an A6500 successor still make sense in this day and age? There hasn't been active development of dedicated compact APS-C lenses for years now, if you want new native lenses, you'll probably be adapting the fullframe Sony E-mounts. There's only been 1 model each generation, each significantly increasing in price. The A6300/A6500 has a lot of issues as a camera body due to the fact they're focusing on keeping the body tiny. Tiny battery/pretty bad battery life. Only one cardslot and it's co-located at the battery compartment. There's no headphone port. The screen doesn't face forwards. There's touchscreen sensitivity, but it's implementation is really limited. The screen dims because the camera suffers from overheating and that should keep it down somewhat. You can raise the threshold of overheat protection kicking in by enabling a tripod mode... 'tripod' because it renders the camera so uncomfortably hot you can't handhold it. Ergonomics are pretty poor. There's nauseating rolling shutter. Menus are awful. Colors are iffy. It's just not a very attractive camera. If they bring out say a $1699 A6700... wouldn't people rather spend the $1999 for an A7III? Just makes more sense. I can only imagine continuing their APS-C line-up making sense bringing a successor not to the A6500 but the A5100. A sub-$1000 entry level with a couple of new compact lenses dedicated to APS-C. Which they surely will not do.2 points -

If high mirrorless video specs hurt pro cinema range, why does Sony do it?
webrunner5 and one other reacted to Cinegain for a topic
If I'm running a somewhat legit production... a small fiddly hybrid camera is the wrong tool for the job. I need a camera that's up to the task. A robust camera taking robust footage. A sensor in a box. With a bunch of ports to connect industry type power, monitors, XLRs, rosettes for extended grips with triggers and whatnot. Not too mention all the external factors such as lighting, audio and stuff, probably hiring a bunch of crew. Renting all the gear, including a solid camera and fancy lenses. Now... if you're a one man's band operator... you can't be arsed with all of that... not to mention the costs. That would be the wrong approach for the job. So here things focus more on the camera's capability and approachability for a single operator. I don't see either how these two necessarily threaten eachother. Canon's just being a scared little biatch... or maybe they are so high on power they enjoy to just spit in the little guys' face and find them begging for more.2 points -

I really hope this is true: "One anonymous source told me the Sept 18 event will indeed give us the A7sIII with fully articulated screen and 4k60p." -https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-will-have-a-big-e-mount-announcement-on-september-18-1-day-and-a-press-conference-on-september-25-too/ If the Sony a7SIII truly had a flip out screen with 4k 60fps in 10bit....there would be a huge stir in the market and seems like a Sony thing to do. They have a history of crapping on their competition when things get competitive, and specs like this would crush Canon and Nikon. Sony really has such a lead in the marked of FF Mirrorless and it seems as though the beast has been awakened. Not even a week ago Sony didn't plan on announcing anything at Photokina, and based on the excitement for Nikon and mostly Canon EOS R, it seems Sony has decided to pull the ultimate mic drop. If there really is a fully articulating screen on the a7siii what does that mean about the body? Is it totally redesigned? Is it just an a9 frame with a flip out screen stapled onto it? Did they finally bite the bullet and pay a licensing fee to Canon for the flip out technology? Sony seems to listen to their customers and 4k 60, 10bit, and flip out screen are literally the three most requested features they have had for their a7 lineup I'm sure. I know as a pro youtuber, if sony gave a fully articulating screen to the a7siii, they would dominate the market. I sure hope these rumors are true.1 point

The audio quality is good enough for someone that doesn't have a dedicated sound guy. Everything packs down nicely and the overall Kit isn't huge. I plan to upgrade the Manfrotto 502 because IMHO I don't think its a good head.. In the Coming future I would like to add an FS5 or even a FS7 if I can get it for a REALLY good price so I can get that super 35 goodness ? Well as an old turd that has done a lot more stuff than I have deserved, or ought to have, and when I look back at it 75% of it was a total F ing waste of time family wise, stress wise, money wise, on and on. A persons life goes fast as hell, and you never know when you are going to die, or one of your family dies, like my first wife at a young age of cancer did. Hey it happens, but to go thorough all the stress, the shit you put up with in doing it, for really no real gain is pretty disheartening when you look back on it I can tell you that. You might as well live on a sailboat out on a river or the ocean, in a cabin in the woods and just sit back and enjoy life with not a lot of commitments. All those accomplishments don't amount to shit when you get divorced, have a heart attack, or wake up one day and your kids are all grown, and it's like man did I waste half my life for What! I know some of you people make a living doing this stuff, and a hell of a lot as just a hobby. I can see a trend here now in the Video industry that there is NEVER going to be an end to a better toy next year. It is like Smartphones now, You have to have the latest and greatest, and man in the video industry that amounts to a Hell of a lot of money. Tons of money. Is it really worth it. It all goes back to my first sentence. Is it worth all the bullshit? I bet it's not. I am not going to buy anything! I will use what I got, good or bad. A new camera won't make me that much better.1 point -
Finally collected the full set of Nikon primes zooms. All have fantastic contrast, color and sharpness. They vignette, but I think that just makes the images pop even more. I've been moving away from low contrast looks. 24-70 17-35 70-200 I used the IS on the 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. Both had very smooth VR performance for me in video and a nice warm look. I do not know how well they perform on adapters.1 point

Despite you continuing to delete my comments I'll continue...... Because although you may not be able to see it, in the mood you are in, I am trying to help you. I work as a freelancer in the broadcast industry as well as film industry. When it comes to Broadcast... while I'm not the best out there at what I do, I know plenty of freelancers that get work over me despite producers preferring my work. Do you know why they get work over me? It's because they do send those emails (the one you wrote in the childish voice) and it's because they do actively hound the bookings people in the office. I've never been one to do that and it sounds like you haven't either. Sometimes it's not about who's the best but who's been the most persistent at forming relationships with others in the industry. I've never been good at marketing myself or ringing up the people doing the hiring asking for work in the same way that it sounds like you don't do that with camera manufacturers. It means that even though producers tell me I might do a better job of something than the next person, I don't always get the call for work because the communication between producers and those booking crew is not always there. In the same way that while you may have relationships with technical people at BM, the PR people might not get the info. Do what you do bacause you enjoy it. If you hate this forum, then yes, stop it or pass it on to someone else. If you still enjoy this forum, if you still enjoy doing reviews, then don't let this one instance ruin everything else.1 point

Think you're overreacting to all of this. Dunno mate, you're just seeing things that aren't there. I am afraid too that you're quite right. That's the way the game is played right now I'm afraid. But do you want to play ball and get in or do you want to shout from the sidelines? That's really up to you. Except... there was no such message. Companies are big... positions change... networks fade and re-establish. You want to be on the radar? You better make sure you're flying through their airspace making waves big enough to get picked up. It's a sea of content creators, filmmakers, blogs and forums out there. They can't keep tabs and stats on all and invite like the top 10 that come out of that. It's like a birthday party. I invite the people I've gotten to know well. Why would they go about it any differently? They're not mindreaders. You can't expect them to know what you want unless you make that clear to them. And how should they have known that you are back in the UK. I thought you were in Berlin as well, myself. Maybe if you shot them a message now making a case for yourself they'd be supercool to still give you one early. But instead you make up your mind about how they think about you and EOSHD and throw this unnecessary tantrum. Boycotting their products. Threatening to close the forum. Like... are you having a midlife crisis mate? Nobody is an enemy here. Why can't we just all get along, talk this over and sort this out like adults? This has nothing to do with not appreciating you or what you've done with the site and for the community. The GH2 Hack Vault and stuff back in the day got me hooked. The GH4 and anamorphic guides were great. Your blog posts... your forum comments. I might not agree with everything, but I've always respected what you did. This is a safe place for people of all kind of backgrounds and skill levels, it's great to see the comradery, playful banter and knowledge displayed. And I am in fact grateful for that and for you keeping that alive. But that's got zero to do with not being invited to a hands-on event. C'mon.1 point

I have been back in the UK for almost a year, but yes, still visit Berlin occasionally. Not that it makes a difference where I am based in this case - at the event were Italians and all sorts from around the continent. I don't want lavish dinners. I don't want fancy events in Hawaii. I can’t stand fully articulated screens. They’re pretty much a deal breaker for me. Reason? Takes much longer time to flip out and needs tuning. I need to twist the the thing out and the turn the screen to the right position. With a simple flip out screen it’s one movement, just like opening the finder on my 500CM. I can’t deal with vloggers who act as if their very specific selfie needs are a general thing. I almost never point the camera at myself and if I would the smartphone app is better since it now only shows me the cameras view but also offers remote exposure control. The Fujifilm mechanism for the X-H1 is the best I’ve handled. I also do not understand why many vloggers advocate for the full articulation in all the cameras. It’s not like I jump into GH5 threads and whine and scream about the screen and how I hope they remove it in the GH6 or “I will never buy one”. The speed and convenience of a flip out is superior and I bet benefit many more photographers than an articulated does. 2 moves vs 1. Adds up over time.1 point
