I am certainly not bigger than a camera company, or more important than Blackmagic and I think people may have seen the hysterics as a bit silly. I accept that yes, possibly I have shot myself in the foot. Having said that, EOSHD is bigger than me as well and is a real community. I was standing up for the community and not just for myself. This was a perfect storm for me. A combination of several factors which caused me to get upset enough to write that article... First the Canon EOS R launch and the new levels of invasive of PR offensive we are seeing from the camera companies to quell dissent and turn even Caleb Pike into a "it's not perfect but WOW what a great camera" kind of guy. Rather than the person he should be, a "1.8x crop sucks" kind of reviewer. Secondly the overwhelming feeling of shithead sycophants climbing above my site, in the VIP lane, completely undeservedly. Thirdly the geographical positioning of the Blackmagic event, it being on my doorstep. Next the fact Cinema5D were paid to fly in. I could have walked in. Finally, the John Brawley factor on here and the lack of support from most of my own readers, honestly all this is enough to give someone a nervous breakdown. It's hard to really get across how I feel, because it is a weird situation and I think the internet is a bit weird as well. In real life, people don't say the things I say or say the things to me that I have had to put up with. People need to calm down, myself included. It's only a camera. But I do feel the future of camera and tech journalism is at stake. In fact it may already be absolutely dead. And the most depressing thing of all is that the reader is fine, unawares, and on the most part notices no issue. No, that wasn't my intention. Yes I have dug myself into a very silly hole. I'll be the first to admit that. Yes Johnnie at Cinema5D is laughing his business head off as we speak.6 points -

Let's finally put this on track please. Topic related as much as possible. Respecting who hosts us only fits it, as well. I am done to come here to read personal attacks addressed to each other. People must learn to respect the difference. All are entitled to take a respectful tone towards our own side included -- aka the boomerang effect. This is a camera forum. Not a battle field. No one earns anything to hurt anyone or someone as target. When we don't appreciate something or someone, the best is to save to ourselves. Keep it civil. No freedom of speech can justify that. Only common sense will overcome to extract a pretty decent overview as fair conclusion, whether serves us and our side whether not.4 points

The problem I am having with all of the negative nancy’s around here is that they live in such a bubble. As said ad nauseum, sure nobody WANTS the crop, but the camera has it. If it isn’t your cup of tea, COOL! But nobody has said the image looks bad. Because so far, everything I’ve seen from the camera looks great. A thick image with great AF and great colors. People live in such bubbles here. If any of you were forced to shoot with it and forced to deal with the crop, I’m sure you guys would get amazing results.4 points

A dignified and reflective response Andrew. We all act small too often. Acting big is what we need more of. My unsolicited advice: Delete the anti BM article - it doesn't reflect your intellect but, as you say above, it's the result of a perfect emotional storm. I'd offer JB an olive branch privately - he's a good man and a valuable voice for any creative community. A lot of your members look up to you and it's a good opportunity to show them the value of thoughtfulness. IMHO.3 points -

Summary: Better sample footage at launch Better availability straight after launch Marketing to relevant audience online rather than biggest audience Not cannibalising A7S III sales with A7 III Canon full frame lenses and 1.8x crop shambles Keeping Cinema EOS "seed" from photographic business planted with good video in Canon EOS range Keeping people in a lens ecosystem with good bodies Knowing how your "well understood" market has changed in an instant Shift to high-end pricing is dangerous (China) Understanding apps Read the full article2 points -

I'd say that since you work in the same industry that you are colleagues, wouldn't you? My point is just that when we all respect each other and can work together (despite our personal feelings) the filmmaking community benefits. A rising tide benefits all the ships in the harbor! I'm a fan of yours who has benefited a lot from your blog so please don't take this as me being negative. I want you to succeed. It just seems like you're the only one doing the "clashing" and when you bring up Johnnie and Nino up constantly it stands out (especially when others, like myself, have had positive interactions with them). I'll back off on the topic since others want to move on. I'm looking forward to your pocket 4k review!2 points -

Why does it matter if they have covered it in the past? They are well respected working DPs who could bring the pocket 4k to the pro market. Which is likely what BMD wants. I am just perplexed about why you dislike cinema5d so much. It seems personal and is becoming sort of an internet joke on other youtube channels. It makes me sad because I've benefited so much from your work. I've also benefitted from Nino and Johnnie. The biggest difference though isn't that they are "conventional pros" (That matters very little to me. I owe some of my success to your knowledge, insight, and point of view). There's a stark contrast in the level of professionalism displayed towards colleagues. You probably should have been invited to those events. I would have loved seeing your take! But bad mouthing other people who were invited won't help change that.2 points -

Ever since discovering Andrew's EOSHD, I pretty much check it everyday to see what he has to say about all the related stuff. I think the world needs more people like Andrew who expresses his own opinion and makes his own brand of videos/films and doesn't need to be validated by the typical factors that people look to. For what it's worth, what I love is that Andrew seeks to be a balanced blend of the technical and the artistic, which is the road I have taken. I am a Technical Instructor by day in a Photography department at a university, and use all the expertise I learn and instruct on to see where my own creative intuition takes me in my spare time. For me, it beats chasing after funding, and I get to make what I'm into, without executives chipping in...it's just right for me, not saying it's right for everyone else. Anyway, don't stop Andrew, and props for being open, honest and a massive thanks to all the advice, help (from guides) and personal perspective on all things camera/video related!2 points -

Depends on the "art" Dan. I like a lot of stuff out there. Check out Kendy Ty. This is so motivating. We are all in the same boat! Just trying to share what we know. There are people who just want to self-promote and glorify themselves by cozying up to camera companies and getting views. I am glad you've actually been HELPED by the blog and enjoy the technology. Remember that article about the Samsung NX1 "the glory of technology", I think that's my passion rather than fitting into public relations expectations. I am a nerd. Not a social climber.2 points -
I mean at this point you're just outright misrepresenting what Areia shot. Yes, he did shoot a video walking around a zoo. He also shot what I consider to be a well-shot, edited and graded video: ... ... as well as one comparing the Micro to the Pocket 4k, which is yet to come out (but he released the Pocket 4k footage already). I know you have seen these videos, mr. Reid, because you have commented on them on your own forums. Why are you downplaying the stuff he made? I mean the answer is obvious: it's because you weren't the one who got to make it. I really don't want to seem hostile to you on your own forums (which, don't get me wrong, I think is awesome for you to facilitate), but it's stuff like this that makes you come across as petty and vindictive, because by putting these little spins on the story you appear to be actively looking for reasons to feel slighted.2 points

I think I have to stand up now and shout “I’m Spartacus”. Without putting this too dramatically though, I owe my career in part to Andrew and EOSHD. I don’t post much as I’m not one of the more illuminated members of this forum. But I make films, albeit at a corporate level, and I have based my gear purchases over the years on Andrew’s reviews, and I’ve bought tutorials and his Pro Color video profiles too. That’s all good, but what I have learned over the years since I discovered EOSHD, and how I have grown in confidence as a filmmaker because of this technical knowledge that I had through Andrew’s expertise was invaluable. I could talk, read and understand so much more about the craft because I had the technical part too. I would always come here first when researching anything camera related, and would always leave having learned something new or been reminded of something I’d forgotten. And I enjoy reading everyone’s comments, having on so many occasions been close to posting mine, but then would think that I wasn’t necessarily adding to the debate - as might be the case now - so didn’t. But it made me think and helped put things into perspective. But in the end, I just want to say a massive thank you to you Andrew. You’re absolutely entitled to go off on a rant - particularly because we all should know that in the end, you’re big enough to put your hands up when you believe you’ve not done right by your own standards. It should be of no surprise that no person commenting on these last couple of articles would be able to change Andrew’s mind about how he felt. That would have been out of character - the character we know that will decimate some aspect of a camera if it merits it, or shout alleluia down a megaphone when a manufacturer knocks the ball outta the park with some feature. Andrew, well done. Dust may take a while to settle for some, but you deserve some respect for having the balls to speak your mind. Keep up the amazing work you do.2 points

Andrew, Jun could also view your comments about him as snide. All because he got a camera, and you did not... It feels like you're jumping to critique all video's uploaded by someone with a Pocket 4K in another attempt to support your stance that BMD is giving cameras to the wrong people. I remember a thread here, some time back where more than a few guys critiqued your color grade on one of your Canon videos, and you responded like you never thought you'd receive criticism. You have threatened to quit this whole thing more than once, and people have always begged you to keep at it. People are here because they appreciate what you've created, but you pay way too much attention to the negative... No one can argue the numbers your site gets, but your victim attitude isn't winning.2 points -

I am not slating the guy. K-pop videos are just not my artistic bent. I know it is the Trump-era and people are a little sensitive about criticism just like him. You can't seem to critique the work of someone these days without it coming across as you hating the living daylights of the person who made it. I certainly don't hate. I just like to think objectively, that something like this from me, aimed at 800,000 camera users, would have been more useful and Blackmagic would have sold more units. But what the fuck do I know? Maybe it needs more arses?2 points -

What's the point of giving the first cameras to pros then? Everyone will have their own personal opinion but I think the footage just shows that lacking IBIS hurts handheld shooting. Until I have shot a great variety of Cinema DNG clips to grade, I am not able to judge the camera. In this video, the footage looks no better or worse than a GH5S, A7 III, etc. LOL. Was that not already obvious to you from any everyday shoot with any camera? You suddenly learnt that useful info from this clip did you... Oh.. Ok. The rolling shutter should be ok as it is the same sensor as the GH5S, 13ms readout. Yes, important not to be personal. One can critique a video, without being personal about the artist. I am just saying he did not put his best foot forward with this work, and it's a very primitive test video shot like stills. I think, if you're going to have the privilege of one of the first demo cameras you should be doing a lot better stuff than that, that's all. So this is his best work, a load of tits and ass. 3m views though, which gives you an idea of why he has a demo camera!2 points -
I don't understand why you have to be so asinine about this - he explains in the description of the video that he is aware of the fact that the footage is rocky, what the reason for it is, and then goes on to explain why he choose to include the footage anyway. What more do you want?2 points

I am pretty unimpressed with the footage as well, it's not a good showcase for the camera. First problem is it seems to be shot like a stills shoot. I am sure in isolation some of the frames make nice photographs but as a video it doesn't hold up at all, there are no ideas or mood to it, or any purposeful camera moves or edits to support the content. Several shots underexpose the skin tones 2 or 3ev making her look about 20 years older, the handheld shots are wobbly and add nothing to the aesthetic, the tripod sections are shot like a stills shoot with the model trying to pose for stills, but the only difference is that the photographer has pressed the video button instead of the shutter release. Is this supposed to be an example of the "pro" approach to filmmaking? Is this supposed to be Blackmagic's strategy to put the camera ONLY in the hands of actual PROS rather than just reviewers? Because it's not speaking well for either their capabilities or the camera's capabilities.2 points -

@Andrew Reid I agree. Based on the footage shown so far it has finally caught up with the NX1 in terms of codec and overall performance. Fuji is still in the camera business and Samsung isn’t, so I would call this the NX1 successor. With the amount of support Fuji puts behind cameras and their lens fab capabilities this and the X-H2 could finally dethrone Samsung after ~4 years. in the next 3 months we will know for sure if this is a contender or pretender. My bet is on contender.1 point -

60P adds a documentary-like realism to the footage but it isn't in the least bit cinematic. 24p all the way for me. Camera is looking like a great buy BUT let's not get TOO carried away and hype it to death. It is not THAT much better than a NX1. Maybe in low light and for 4K slow-mo from that 60p. It will be superseded quite soon by an X-H2. Maybe as soon as in 6 months. Something to be aware of, for those who need IBIS and superior ergonomics.1 point -

Full FOV 4K is actually 2.7K upscaled, as the IMX183 sensor can either do full 5.5K readout or 2.7K readout, the Ambarella chip obviously cannot handle 5.5K supersampling. See Table 3 Readout mode: https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/products_en/new_pro/may_2014/imx183_e.html1 point -
FYI both lenses share an 11 element 9 group design. Canon's RF35mm is said to have "remarkably similar MTF characteristics to those of the excellent EF35mm f/1.4L lens" in a smaller, lighter package. It can focus closer than Nikons and also has IS, Macro & extra control ring. All that for $300 cheaper.1 point

Had it been an APSC camera the lenses would have been smaller and cheaper. The camera would have been smaller and cheaper too. I’m sure the video from the R looks fantastic but it doesn’t make sense as a hybrid camera to have that kind of crop. I mostly take stills and I always try to learn to visualise my focal lengths before raising the camera. That’s near impossible if my 50mm is no longer a 50mm when I switch to video. If I would buy the R I would use it as a 1080p camera only, for full sensor read out.1 point
