  1. It was actually pretty easy, following subjects with AF-c and the joystick is cake. They were hanging out in this area for about an hour, milling around, calling out to each other when one would go into the brush and disappear, cleaning each other and so on. I was there before sunrise. I missed them going into the water thanks to a trip to the toilet. But I got them swimming out to sea, they were incredibly cool to watch, a true bucket list experience, just amazing. AF is really, really good, even when you're moving the camera, only takes a second to snap into focus (I wish Fuji would let us adjust focus speed in video, but I usually just use that as an edit point anyway). Here's a frame (compressed a bit to make uploading easier, its not SOOC), shot handheld at 200mm with the 55-200. EDIT: side note since this is a X-T20 thread, for me the joystick works better than a touchscreen to pull focus, most of the time I shoot through the EVF (easier to see in daylight) and my right hand is adjusting the shutter speed while the left holds the lens. Another edit, I have a bunch of XT2 travel video from the last month that I'm working on getting uploaded, there will be a flood of footage from me soon from Australia, New Zealand and now Malaysia - then more throughout the year from countries around the world.

  2. Thought I would show some new footage that was recently posted in our user group by Olan Collardy. Processed in Resolve with Bolex Log. User demand (lots) and time. And of course, no guarantees of anything until it comes from the head honchos.

  3. And what would you call an iPhone and DJI OSMO? Expensive gear and an 'elaborate' set-up too. And smartphones are the new compact camera, exactly what that has always been: 'good enough'. Just tourists, or just Asians without a interchangeable lens camera, seem to always use their tablets to take shots... which are not exactly known to rival compact cameras. They fall more in the webcam category, I'd say and well, frankly, it just looks so wrong to do. xD

  5. Lots of the not so heavily graded shots in this imo. And its always fun to try and pick out the $$$$$$ lenses vs the very affordable Kish Primes in this.

  6. BMPCC, BMPC and UM4,6k ProRes in log. Apply the official rec_709 LUT, some minor adjustments (CC, not grading) - e voilá! : really, really great skintones, many nuances. This isn't raw, it's ProRes (pre-production footage): Is it the codec? I don't think so. It's the color science of the camera. I dare say with the 400mbps Intra update the codec will be on par with ProRes. Did you know? ProRes422 is 400mbps @ 2160 25p - and it's a less efficient codec!

  7. I think the reason people are asking for 10 bit in the next A7 series is just because Pana gave it In GH5. It is the "take that" factor of the prosumer market. That doesn't necessarily means that A7S need absolutely 10 bit to be a fine all around camera. No one asked for it before gh5's announcement. But people asked for other thinks, like better economics, usable screen and better autofocus for gimbal work. As Axel said XAVC codec is badass and the only reason for a prosumer camera to have 10 bit codec is to have room in post for correcting color issues. You can easily correct the "zombie" effect on the skin tones that a7 series give in post, but good luck with orange flat skin tones of a g7 ( this is exactly where a 10 bit codec shines). Overall I think that in this specific market it is wiser to provide a nice 8bit codec with pleasing skin tones than a 10 bit codec to save your camera's bad rendition of color. How many of the Pana fanboys out there have actually tried to work on a 10bit file really? I wouldn't be so excited, especially after trying to work with Luke's files on an IMac.....(dude THANKS for these...). Don't get me wrong, I am really considering gh5, but dear Pana...fix those colors please, cause everything else is perfect....

  8. I really liked his point of view and couldn't agree more. Yes, cameras have evolved since then and high noise issues gradually get off our way. But it's not always a matter of perspective or philosophy. From my point of view, A7S has raised the bar so much and opened new creative possibilities that are hard to ignore when an m43 camera with a good lens is getting really close to it´s price...I really liked "The Rock" by the way, but it is not that simple as "it was good for them back then, so stop asking for better SN ratio and do your job", because I personally have not a lighting crew with a van full of lighting gear to save my shot every time my camera tends to screw it...So if you ask me, yes the A7S has more than enough DR and low light capabilities, at least for me, but gh4 would ruin my day. And as for gh5 I am hoping for a usable 3200 iso, which I consider as "a very BASIC feature" for a camera which is 2x the price of a6300.

  13. I often come across deals that I think are really good. Both used and new. Often Im not in the market to buy at the time or its not what Im looking for. So, why not a thread where we tip each other about good deals and discounts. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation, connection or any other reason than feeling like it to why I share this. Recently I tipped the forum about Cyberphoto who are selling a Samsung NX1 + S Zoom + Battery Grip with warranty for a good price. Now its about them again. Yesterday they had an "Evening Deal" for just a few hours. It was 10% off on the E-M1ii. Today its an a6000. My guess this will be a reappearing type of deal. This is the same store that sent out 20% off on the NX1 and GX80 when they where brand new. The G7 was almost down to€200 at one point. So, it could be worth keeping an eye on. www.cyberphoto.se Both times the Evening Deal has been at the very top. To make it easier to spot in the future just look for the word "Kvällskampanj".

  14. Hey guys, I film an online food series called Flour City Foodcore with a good friend of mine who is a chef. Rochester NY was once called the Flour city because of Flour production, now it uses the name Flower city for our annual Lilac festival. Flour City Foodcore is a project designed to highlight interesting techniques as well as the food scence out here. We had filmed this back in August but it got lost in the editing pipeline, finally got around to it. GH4, 18-35 1.8, nikon 50 1.4. Graded with film convert. Enjoy!

  15. Hey guys, I recently moved from my Canon (EOS 5D MKII) to Sony (A7R2), and I got quite upset, that I could not use the VisionLOG profiles on my RAW files in ACR/Lightroom anymore to grade my stills in Photoshop by using LUTs. I couldn't find a alternative on Google - so I found a way to modify the original VisionLOG files to go with the SONY A7RII. I'd happy to share that with you guys: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6gul128sjkqozc0/VisionLOG_A7RII.dcp?dl=0 I am very curious how many people there are who were waiting for that. I can't be the only one who grades stills via LUTs. All the best, Calvin

  17. Yeah that looks great. I love the sloppy zooms and focus. It feels like genuine 8mm or 16mm newsreel and home movies. You should be getting some nice footage out of that mk iii of yours. Any footage to share?

  18. We were recording live events for decades. I do that so many times every year and I have never use a A7s for such a job, usually these venues have some kind of lighting anyway, or else they do not want the crowds to see anything. I am just amazed that people these days believe that with no IBIS, and no A7s, you are doomed to oblivion. I face every day a market that expects from one person to do lights, camera, sound, edit, sound editing, grading, driving, droning, everything. It is not right.

  19. I think people are prone to think like that initially, but realize the error of their ways. That said, provided ratios are maintained, high iso does at least let you use less powerful lights, which can be handy at times.

    RODE VideoMic Pro+

It has the dual output because it has the jack and plus the multipin plug (just below the jack) you can see it on the video at 4:00, but not sure if they work both at the same time and the jack processed and the other not and what kind of device you would need for the b-format. On Rode website they have no info yet....

  23. Thanks jon. I definitely would love this lens...actually, I don't think a day hasn't gone by where I haven't thought about getting one but there have been some patent filings for a Leica 25mm 1.2....so I'm going to hold out for a year or two. I know it really makes no sense image quality wise but I gotta build some anticipation in my life somehow.

The 4K Fuji X-T2 is here

Huh? The X-T2 shows clearly much more detail, where the Olympus looks muddy while oversharpened with lot's of halos. The Fuji wins hands down.

  26. Ending up in around the same price ballpark, but... the E-M1 Mark II w/ 12-40mm f/2.8?! Almost negligible rolling shutter effect. Amazing stabilization. Fast! Great camera for a bunch of stuff. All the buttons and options are quite overwhelming, but you can just stick to the basics. Get a Leica 15mm f/1.7 and maybe a Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7 instead if you prefer small primes?

  30. Hey, I hope you don't cruzify me for trolling but I am spending my time at a fair at the moment and there are video crews shooting all the time at our stand and it is quite interesting to see what they are shooting with and how. All the standarts have been here but I just wanted to share this one that blew me away... Flatpack all-in-one video rig. There is a mic plugged in which a lady is holding interviewing the bearded gentleman, LED light on top and mic holder, too. sorry for the poor photo quality

  32. I honestly dont understand whats going on with these mirrorless manufacturer's strategies regarding lenses. Fuji has actually probably got it best so far with large aperture, small size primes. But theres still plenty room for more pancakes, other cheaper alternatives, more OIS. Like the new 50 is mind bogglingly expensive compared to a 50 on other systems. Sony's FE lenses are big and expensive. Some of MFT's lenses are silly too (the oly 25 1.2). Im always tempted to go FF with Canikon because of the lens options (not to mention the nice manual focus rings).

  33. @Arikhan Mattias already replied, and I do agree with him. Some other thoughts, as I am working on some snowy vineyards and I won't have much time the following days to reply 1) I never do AF, except gimbal work (and the NX1 on a Ronin is brilliant) 2) Metabones is just perfect, does it all (I am not sure that there are other active adapters anyway..), always used on tripod, not a big friend of handheld work 3) 99% use with EF and EF-S, everything works like an m4/3 adapted camera by a metabones active adapter (I guess, only m4/3 camera I have used, is GH4) 4) we haven't achieved great log footage so far, something is always off, and it doesn't help that you can not find any information on the net. So far we are avoiding using log, until further tests, maybe it is better to protect the highlights? Lifting up the shadows creates some unwanted noise. Anyways, not sure, we have to test more, but the camera works most of the time since june 5) image is no black magic stuff, it is a bit video-y, NX1 has better ISO, for sure, this camera (and NX, but especially this) needs proper light, NO A7S stuff either(!), I guess is on par, or even a bit worst than GH4 (up to 800iso for these, 1600 for NX, at least for me). 6) hfr is broken, crops heavily, unusable (if anyone knows different please tell, it drives us crazy!) 7) excellent prime zoom(!) function, if you are humble, you can slightly zoom-in and it is a great feat. to have. Great. 8) the handle in the top is great, no cables (I hate the cables on the C line) 9) working with LS300 yesterday, and with C100mkII today, I dedinitely prefer the C100 ergonomically. The JVC is built like a typical video camcorder, which does not really help ergonomically and it is very front heavy with most L lenses, and even EF-S ones; with m4/3 is better. 10) EVF and monitor are terrible, but I wouldn't expect anything better with this price point. 11) have you checked the price point? It's low, and there were some instant rebates on B&H a month ago. 12) it is a video camera, I love hybrid cameras, but for video work, you need a video camera!

  34. Silly Asians, always taking footage with their tablet. I'm interested in the Rollei cage though. Fits a bunch of cameras. Nice expandability. I've seen projects like the one above on crowdfunding campaigns (Kickstarter/Indiegogo). Though I guess they're more for smartphones and GoPros.

  36. Its your computer. NOT the card or the camera. Put the card back in the camera and play the files via the HDMI cord to a tv. I guarantee you wont see any problems. The problem is your computer is not decoding the files correctly. Update your codecs.

  38. Hey Adam and welcome to the club I think that first, you have to understand your sensor. GH4 has a 4 by 3 sensor, that's why it is a micro four thirds. When filming in 16:9, you got a 16:9 crop image from the 4:3 sensor. When filming in 4:3 anamorphic mode, your GH4 uses the whole sensor. Also, shooting on 16:9 with 2x anamorphics gives you 3.55:1, very wide aspect ratio, see the attached dog. Shooting on 4:3 gives you 2.66:1 aspect ratio, see the attached drumset. There are no rules, you have to know what you're aiming for. Shooting with the GH4 on 4:3 has it's own advantages and if 2.66:1 is still too wide, you can crop in to 2.39:1 cinema standard aspec ratio. Due 4K you won't loose resolution if exporting to 1080p.

  49. MAN. No FPN on real global shutter, rich colour depth, 14.8 stops DR and ability to crank to 60fps? Seriously Eddie, how do we make this happen?!!!!
    1 point
  50. I developed the color science and did all my tests with the camera on Windows. There's the free HFS explorer tool, or you can buy HFS drivers for Windows for 20 USD. If we were to make other cameras, I think a D35 and a D16 mk II based on EMCCDs would be my preference. The D16 mk II would hopefully be based on the KAE-02150. So 30fps, 14+ EV of DR without any of the highlight reconstruction. That's without any noise reduction in the circuitry of the sensor or in the software, so it'd keep the same mojo of the D16. The D35 is more of a dream camera for me. Nothing like it currently exists. I actually made a list a while ago and posted on our user group that Joe was actually on board with had the funding been there to pursue it. It'd basically be an EMCCD version of our sensor, but double the dimensions and resolution horizontally and increase the dimension vertically enough to achieve 16:9.
