  1. I don't have an S1 but out of curiosity I downloaded the v1.2 and v1.1 bin files. I wasn't particularly surprised that they would be different sizes but hadn't expected the v1.2 file to be 4.5x bigger than v1.1.... Upon, erm, closer inspection, v1.2 contains multiple loaders and post boot references which might suggest that there is more to come in terms of additional functionality via additional license fees. Let the RAW speculation commence

    Have an out take from your 10 minute custom test shoot in 2:1 with a bit more of a mute palette then Some blended diffusion to tone the sharpness down a bit as well.

    Right, I'm back with the results. The bad news is that in a photo aspect ratio its, erm, quite noticeable The good news (aside from the fact it is sharp) is that in 2.35:1 you can get away with the worst of it if you go for a centre crop And when you aren't shooting white(ish) walls, it makes reasonably OK pictures.

    The speedbooster is really more of a money saver for me as generally wider fast lenses are more expensive. I could probably get away with doing 17mm, 50mm, and 100mm in regards to full frame. With more complicated lighting setups its sometimes nice to have a longer lens so you can get the shots you want without becoming a shadow on your subject. 17mm is also nice to get a wide shot in tight spaces.

    Thanks for the link. Honestly, I found it to be a wash with no clear winner between the two. If I had to pick one, I think I preferred the Canon. So far on Flickr, there’s hundreds of pages and I’m only a dozen in, Canon is clearly better in my opinion. With that being said, I don’t know if I can justify the cost of the Canon when the f/2 is half the price and affords me IS. Thw Sigma is interesting me. I recently contacted the fella that made that ML Raw video I posted a while back... the one at the WW2 re-enactment and he said the lion share of that video was shot with the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4. So, I am contemplating trying the older EX version and then possibly getting the 30mm 1.4... or testing the 30mm 1.4 first and then later on picking up the 50mm. Also, I paid so little for the Nikkor 35mm 1.4, it doesn’t make much sense for me to sell it... especially since I like it so much...

  8. Resolve 16 beta is fantastic - they are on the 5th 16 beta update. So far the Resolve Studio updates have been free with no update fees - which is unheard of for the amount of time this product has been out. Getting this type of power included with the camera is a huge benefit because they are designed to complement each other. I think of the Blackmagic cameras and Resolve as part of an eco-system where the sum is greater than the parts. In the camera comparison above the I think that glass, gaffing, and grading will make a bigger difference regarding which camera appears to have the better image than the actual camera it self - except for green screen work where all things being relatively equal, the better, sharper, higher resolution codec will make a significant difference. Blackmagic will eventual release a relatively affordable 8k camera, so investing in the Blackmagic eco-system is a pretty good business decision for the long run.

  9. I suspect its more political than technical. With the MC11 they only had to satisfy themselves whereas with the MC21 they have to satisfy their other two partners in the L alliance, both of whom want to sell their own lenses. Leica threw their toys out of the pram completely and won't entertain the MC21 being on their cameras at all and I would suspect the compromise with Panasonic is that Sigma favour compatibility with the SA mount version of it rather than the EF version. Sigma always maintained that the MC11 would only work with their own EF lenses rather than Canon or other manufacturers yet we all know that to be quite a conservative stance! In the case of the MC21 perhaps that stipulation has to be seen to be more literal. When Sigma release the L mount versions of the SD Quattros it will be interesting to see how much better the compatibility of the MC21s are on those.

  14. Yeah it takes about 3x amount more mbps on All-I to get the same output from my experiences. So it really is no better. So Andrew is correct. They will be close.

  16. Didn't seeing any post yet here on the Moment Air lens. Wanted to maybe get a discussion going about it. Link to it kickstarter below. Essentially Its a Anamorphic lens adapter for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Its got me very interested. Wasn't too impressed with the color grading in their promotion video but I could see the potential. Love to here everybody's thoughts here.

Or less exposure if you buy the NDs as well Are they going to do a version for the original Mavic Pro as well, as I get the feeling that sales of the newer version may have slowed a lot since more restrictions have come into place about where you can fly drones so the original would be a bigger market? Not that it looks like they're having problems selling this one !

The GH5S 400Mbit is ALL-I, and you need that higher bitrate to maintain the quality in ALL-I, with each frame needing to be compressed independently. 150Mbit V-LOG (with V-Gamut colour science from Cinema Varicam) is Long GOP so you do not need 400Mbit. The compression method is more efficient, so you can use lower data rates. Will be interesting to compare them nevertheless.

Its a different structure with the S1R but along similar lines and yes the point I was (badly) making was that there is possibly more than one upgrade in this firmware that may become available later. Of course, the additional loaders and post boot pointers could equally be to activate the bricking of the camera routine when people have attempted to hack dodgy serial numbers in to it

  20. The 2016 E-M1 ii just became the ultimate Youtube/vlogging camera (full stop) and literally no one (except this thread) is talking about it. Even if the E-M5 iii coming in August gets PDAF it probably won't have the flippy screen...

  22. Or more likely, Firmwares are Common Across systems, like how you found that the GX85 had Cinelike profiles hidden within the menu (which wad probably common for the G85). The S1, S1R and S1H probably have similar menus, and the additional functionality and other fee regarding the same, may be a hidden RAW within the S1H somewhere. Panasonic is waiting to pounce on Sony this time. ?

    Nah, I'm just an infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of 35mm lenses. Law of averages says that I'll eventually get something in focus and composed properly. Thanks to the wonders of the MC21 SA>L adapter and some electrical tape over the contacts I can actually try that for you on the SL just to see how much it covers. Be right back

    Sigma lenses tend to be wonderfully perfect. I think color rendering also plays a role in how pleasing a lens is. I do miss my 18-35 but now being able to get a full frame look with my XT3, vintage Nikons were simply way more affordable.

  25. The DR comparison with the a73 is impressive, I really like the S1's image. Still waiting for the a7s3 and full specs on the S1h before dipping a toe into the L-mount. Chris

    It's Official. The S1 has more dynamic range than the EVA1. And it handles highlights better than anything out there. One could probably shoot someone dancing on the sun, and we would be able to see it.

  28. Well Im hoping on a new sigma line, a true ART line. Not sure why sigma called it the ART line in the first place, you get almost the opposite of ART images out of them. I wish they will bring out a new line, also sharp wide open maybe less sharp then the sigma ART line now, with the same achromatic abboration, which is pretty good on the ART, the coating of the lens Is also great, but with more interesting bokeh. The current ART line is great for corporate, event stuff and all but I feel the current image is quite bland for narrative stuff.

    I had a quick look at the group for it and once I'd got past the 28294 B&W images one contributor has submitted of his girlfriend I've got to say this particular image might have had me looking on eBay if I didn't already own enough 35mm lenses to start my own travelling exhibition.

    As Towd said, the autofocus improvements in the S1 are a combination of new algorithms, dedicated AF chip, and new lens motor designs in the L series lenses. They are working together to try to eliminate or at least dampen the pulsing effect (its seems to be way less noticeable in firmware v1.2) in Panasonics DfD. I'm in the same boat. I prefer lighter and smaller kit with good features. I think they need to nail a few key areas for the GH6 to be a hit. 1. Improve upon the IBIS; 7.5 stops minimum with an OIS lens. 2. Improve high ISO performance. 3. More megapixels for stills photography. 4. 14 stops minimum for dynamic range 5. A L-mount to MFT adapter with a built in ND of some sort, electronic or otherwise to increase the synergy with their L-Mount. Anyway, the S1 seems to becoming a compelling camera. Hope its not too late...

    Nice. It will be North West coast and is very similar to your edge of shore shots actually. It will likely be on the mystery camera as I will be in desperate need to pad out my entry! It varies so its best doing an "x vs y" google search for the specific lenses. In general, a lot of them do share the same optics but the further complication is the vintage of them and the variance that can bring in terms of the life they've led. The only sure way I suppose is to buy mint versions of both, test them and sell the loser!

    It was around £200 so yeah you got quite the bargain there! Nice shot. I do like an old school boardwalk. I might shoot a UK one when I go back in a few weeks for comparison! Could be a bluff though and the "mystery" element is how on earth I made a RED look that cheap!

    Here’s a frame from one of the cheapest lenses around... Nikkor 50mm f/2. The lens is fairly sharp and contrasty wide open but since this is was a wide angle shot, I stopped it down to f/2.8...

  38. To be honest, thinking about it it shows how excellent the GF lenses are. The panasonic not only is a 188MP image, it's a a 188MP RGB image with every pixel having all the information for red, green and blue. That the Fuji is as close as it is, is a statement to it's quality. If the rumors are true and the GFX gets multi shot as well, I can't imagine what the quality will be like. Dpreview probably has to reprint it's target at a higher resolution ?

  43. Loved the NX1 AF, in good light it was almost flawless. Fell apart in low light. The Z6 is on par with it I would say. Far better in low light. Even though the expense of the new lenses are very high, the old 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 still focus very well.

  45. Follow this advice first @kaylee! It is spot on. The initial aim isn't money, and I would argue the aim is never ever about just money. The aim is good content. Money just "happens" if you get that bit right. I think Dave's advice about the affiliates is good as well, but none of that will apply initially as you build your audience and following. My advice is this: Sheer passion. You have to create the videos based on your passion, your enthusiasm and interest and sheer enjoying in making them. Once it becomes a chore or like work, the content gets lifeless and repetitive. This goes for everything. It goes for filmmakers, as much as it does for dog videos and cute stuff, everything has to have some inspiration or passion behind it to succeed, and you need to be almost obsessive about the subject over long periods of time. You have to love it. If you love dogs, like I do, go for it. You don't even need to think about it initially, just have fun and do what you do. If it's fun for you it's fun for me to watch and I will subscribe and join in the fun. My girlfriend watches guinea pig videos on YouTube, and has a riot. When she's stressed or upset she watches rabbit being washed in bubble bath There is massive demand for this sort of content on YouTube but quite a lot of it about. If you are unique, and I think you are, you'll succeed if you stick with it and build that following. Don't even look at the balance sheet though, for at least 2 months, and obviously don't spend more than you have to creating the videos at first, until you have a following and merchandise (or affiliate income) that can support it. Build a niche and a brand and they will come! Sell t-shirts, sell merchandise to your fans. It sounds like you have an absolute gem of a setting, the forest, the awesome dogs... So go for it and don't look back. When I started EOSHD I was just a forum poster at DVXUser giving out all this info for free on someone else's site and the site admins were horrible to me one day, so I thought - right - enough of this, I'm going to set up my own camera blog, my own forum, and that was EOSHD. I hope my passion showed through! GOOD LUCK!

  46. I'd agree with that. The EM1X is a great camera but a bit heavy for Vlogging. I was really surprised E-M1 II got such a big firmware update, so long after release. If the AF is as good as you say it is, then you can pick one up used cheaper than a boring old A6400 and have much more fun with it, with much better colour, ergonomics, not to mention that incredible IBIS. I am glad you have a 1D C again. I'd love to see a comparison of images between the 1D C and everything else. I still feel like the hefty MJPEG codec has the most CCD/film like colour going on of all the modern 4K stuff, especially in Canon LOG with a good LUT. Even though the E-M1 II has taken a leap, I am keeping my EM1X though. I don't currently do any vlogging, and having a smaller, lighter pro Canon 1D style camera with great colour and IBIS is really nice. The feel of the body is superb, like a mini 1D C or 1D X II.

  47. I just did a few jobs for independent candidates running for parliament. Besides some gopro adventure footage at the beginning of the first film, it's all 5D MK3 14bit lossless. 99% shot with an old Leica 35mm summicron-r, a few shots with the 90mm summicron and 135mm elmarit-r. Almost all of it shot from the shoulder. Also used a B+W Käsemann polariser and a cheap Hoya ND. Cut and graded in Resolve 16 with filmconvert and http://www.colorghear.com/ , upscaled to UHD.

    Anyone looking to learn new software like this, I would advise you to just make yourself a sweet ass new showreel, and if possible do it from the original camera files so you also have to re-grade everything. That way have to learn how to use the tools to match a grade, or make it even better. There's no deadlines so you can take your time and get to know every inch of the software that's relevant to you, and since the showreel's job is to promote yourself, then you'll want to put the time in to get every little detail right. It's always worked for me. As for the organisation of projects, I just let DaVinci use it's database while I"m working on it, and then when it's finished, you can go to the little Home icon in bottom left, right click on a thumbnail and go 'Export Project' This gives you a .dpr file that you can save next to all your media for archiving.
