  1. Love mine so far... It's all about the stabiliser, leave the tripod at home... It's basically an Olympus E-M5 II with 4K video, none of the Sony menu troubles, decent physical control layout, good EVF and tilt screen.

  2. Crappy lighting and limited movement, this may be nominated for worst initial footage, but it's all I have at this point. Shot with the kit lens.

  3. Sounds good! Ooh, well, the kit just got In Stock for 699 now here. I guess I'm heading out facing the rain!

  4. Charging the camera... via USB! Nice. 5 axis IBIS works well with the EF Speed Booster with primes.... Not much luck with zooms or IS lenses yet, maybe Metabones needs to update firmware. Loving the 4K image so far.

  5. Picked up a GX85 today at Best Buy- they've had them in stock all week! I saw it on their website a few days ago, but assumed it was an error until I called the store and they told me they had two in stock; their website just gave me an error when I tried to order online for pickup. I'm liking it so far, I think I'm going to return my X-Pro2 I got the other week, I need a proper video camera. I haven't had much of a chance to shoot yet, but I'll post the clips that I have in a bit.

  6. I have a Zoom H1 which I stick into a Rode shockmount, and that does a pretty good job to isolate handling noise. I also have a couple of VideoMic Micros which are great for getting very good reference audio, or ambiance, and possibly a viable backup if everything goes to hell. But really, you need to get a wireless lav system (I have the Rode wireless kit, it works great) if you're going to have people speaking in non-controlled situations. The H1 might be ok if you can put it on a stand and place it close to the subject, but unless you can stick close to the speaker every time they say something you're not going to get consistent sound. One thing I like to do is to run the wireless receiver into the H1, then the H1 into the camera, and just leave the H1 recording all the time. It's an awful lot of audio to comb through later, but you never know when they'll say something interesting when they're off camera. Tell them what you're doing though! Or get a sound person. They're worth their weight in gold.

  7. Stabilization looks good! Mine's charging away (yeah I'm one of those; first charge, then play (on initial run)). -- Gotta say, it's a pretty little thing and actually rather comparable to the LX100; hardly any bigger. It has the tilty screen the LX100 should've had in the first place and then of course the interchangeable lens mount (the 12-32mm is a little smaller than the integral unit of the LX100). Dual dial action opposed to the top dedicated top dials on the LX100. For a moment I forgot the ring on the kitlens was for the zoom and doesn't do much focussing on rotation, lol xD. I've been using too many primes lately, so focus solely relies on the AF with it, which actually does a fair job. And even using the EVF you can touch to focus on the screen which works quite nice. On this rather gloomy rainy day, at this time of day, weather and light doesn't really lend to go out. Fingers crossed tomorrow is a little better. Some messing around already showed decent stabilization; looks a tad bit nervous, might be partially the autofocus, the fact electronic stabilization is off or just my excitement having a new camera that it's hard to control physical exertion. Just one clip though. Image and noise profile looks a lot like the G7 with in the darkest areas hardly any noise, just to come in with some organic grains in the somewhat darker mids. So far, so good.

  8. Stoked! Ordering as soon as the kit becomes available in the UK. Im going to use it as a walk-around/family/friends camera. Keeping the kit lens for the wide angle and probably gonna acquire the 20mm f1.7. I've been using the 17mm f1.8 for far too long Two pancake lenses means i can always keep one in a jean pocket. Thank god for micro four thirds!

  9. Jpr

    FS5 2.0 released.

Ver2.00 1. The ND filter density can now be adjusted automatically. 2. Shooting and recording in RAW mode is now supported. (“CBKZ-FS5RIF” (sold separately) is required) 3. The zebra function has been enhanced, allowing you to select two types of setting. Also, the level settings can now be adjusted in 1% increments. 4. You can now select the audio that is output in the headphones. 5. You can now acquire and record position information when shooting using the GPS function. The long awaited auto ND feature is pretty amazing. It is very smooth and assignable so you can easily turn it off and on. When you turn it off the ND stays on the previous setting so no awkward blips. Very happy with this feature as an event/documentary shooter. Can't wait to test the raw feature when its out. This video I found shows the feature in action. Being able to change the depth of field on the fly without exposure changing is pretty neat - I can see lots of uses for this again as an event shooter.

  10. A petition is something with significant public backing that you're going to present to someone to get your way and not theirs. Hacking is more of a community and collaborative effort. I don't see how a petition helps there. Besides, hacks are created out of limitations in a certain line-up. You weren't happy with the GH2 quality? Well tough luck, there wasn't anything better. Want a better Canon? Well, there's the 1D C... btw CHDK goes way back before all of that (it was already happening on general consumer level)! Want a better Nikon? Well, there wasn't much better than the D5300... now there seems to be. NX1 is already representing the Samsung flagship and there's no chance of anything better within the system: hack away! But if you want something better than the G7, we take present day Panasonic and we can get the GH4, soon GH5, an upgrade at reasonable costs. That's segmentation that just works! Besides Panasonic likes to hear out people and implement features they agree they'd like the users to have, rather than having the users tinkering around with their cameras. By now I think it's pretty much air tight to get into, but who knows, with the remote app you could unlock V-LOG L, what's to say there aren't more exploits? Well, judging the userbase I'd say if it was possible, we'd already know about it. I just don't think it's worth forcing time and energy, maybe even funds into it, when you can just buy a better Panasonic camera??! I also generally think the need for better quality is way less than back in the 5DmkII/550D/T2i ML and GH2 days (and you'd have a significant jump up in quality back then as to marginal improvements you could make now).

  12. Thanks to @Cinegain for the heads-up. Tons just arrived in Berlin at the Alexanderplatz Media Markt store for anyone interested. 799 with the kit 12-32. However they also had one body-only at the other Media Markt for.... 599. Total bargain. These however are in very short supply, so it may be easier just to get the kit and sell the lens. Remember it's GX85 in the US, GX80 in UK and Europe... not a big fan of those model name changes! UPDATE: WEX in the UK have the body only in stock for £509 http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-panasonic-lumix-dmc-gx80-digital-camera-body/p1595526

  13. Regarding why it makes sense to do business or not do business with a company, I/my company has been doing biz with B&H since we started over 20 years ago. I'm as agnostic regarding businesses as I am regarding a higher power. That said, while I/we certainly do a good deal of business with other companies for various reasons - I've done far more with B&H than with any other entity for our film and audio post studios as well as film and audio prodution. It would be fair to say I've spent a reasonable house mortgage with them over these years. I've never been treated with anything but respect and never experienced anything but great service. I've never had a single issue with their policies, products or staff. They're probably the best stocked and informed company in the world, all things considered. I say this as a pretty dogmatic non-dogmatic person, who believes that the world is a better place when we respect each others differences (as long as they do no harm) and as someone who regularly needs an item for a deadline a day or so before it arrives. I've learned to work with B&H's occasionally "unorthodox" (I know) schedule because of the quality of the business relationship we've had over the years. It's hard, in any field, to say you've never had a bad experience with someone or some business when operating at demanding levels over many instances. I can say that about B&H.

  15. Was there any previous case where they actually added something after they had finalized and presented the camera? I can see In Stock here as well: http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/panasonic-lumix-gx80-body-black.html . According local Cyberport they are expected here on the mainland for tomorrow. Another CEU store claims delivery in 1-2 days, meaning it's probably In Stock with the distributor. Seems Austrian prices for the kit undercut some of the German market ones (like Amazon and Saturn) by 100 EUR. Same happened with the LX100 during the launch period and then rose back up again, might want to be in for one after all. I'm so weak, lol, it's just that I have so many non-IS lenses you know, that it's kinda tempty to already jump on it and not wait out for the GH5, which perhaps will be shipping around Christmas or something (seems so lightyears away right now). I'd kinda rather be outside shooting away with that little thing in summer.

  16. My list would be shorter. I'd be like... try: 1. selling your A6300 There's just no way I'm going to put up with a camera that gives me such hassle, even if it shits rainbows. I'd rather use a G7 and just deal with it. Respect if you go above and beyond to make it work for you with fans 'n schtuff though.

  17. I shooted my hand with an LX100 and an X-Rite Passport color-checker. I used the auto-match of Resolve to color the clips. Three different Led lights, one costed me 300€, one nealy 100€ and one less than 50€. Which is A, B and C??

  18. From today's shoot with the Micro in bright california sun. Still amazes me how much detail is retained, especially with all that white in the frame. This is for a client so I can't leave them up indefinitely, but for now...

  19. I have both and I've only grabbed the Pocket to do side by side comparisons since the Micro arrived. Battery life is the main reason. Even with a Canon LP-E6 battery plate attached to it, that LCD screen (I assume) limits battery life to about an hour. On the Micro I get twice that with the same battery. Headed out this morning to the Santa Monica Airport for another gig that I'm shooting with it.

  23. I have realized that it also proves also somehow limited computing capability on NX1 with high bitrates (what we see in 120fps and max 100Mbit is seen also in 4K with bitrate above 200Mbps)... I have made lot clips with 180Mbps and there were no dropped frames what I have seen so far (I have check it via PotPlayer). I think that 24p200Mbps should be without issues if 30p180Mbps is fine (lower framerate -> higher bitrate)... I think even 220Mbit should be fine. I have not use Kino Seed's version yet but it should be same or better (according experience of Outerbeat and others), I will wait a little while to test it (morerover it seems that Otto K just found the way how to make it built-in which is great http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4000563?page=5 )

  24. You've said this really well. I think it depends most on "implementation", how the codec and image has been designed to create the data for the image. For example, the FS5 is 10 bit but the codec is a shoddy XAVC-L. The FS7 10bit is astonishingly superior (XAVC-I). Meanwhile, the C100 with it's shitty AVCHD is an advanced implementation of wonderful engineering. That said, many people don't understand that 10bit, 12 bit etc isn't an "instant" image quality improvement. It's just more data. What you do with that data, and done correctly, see's the boost that everyone craves. So if you are crap at grading but want 10bit, forget it. Learn to grade first.

  25. It's pick-up only there. Another Viennese: Sobotka might ship though, but they only show stock for body, which is just as expensive in Germany. See Geizhals.eu-link earlier for availability. 27. Nice! Saw one store just reporting stock on the body only here as well now. Waiting for the kit though, as it's only 100 EUR more than just the body around here. For that I'm eager to see what that usually GM-paired lens is about. The small form factor is cool, probably will lack a bit performance/character, but you know, an effectively 100 EUR lens, what's there to complain? Might even put those 14mm and 20mm pancakes to good use again. That's just one side of it: having a microsized option to shoot with. Doesn't attract much attention either I'd say; nice and low profile. Although the real cool thing of course is pairing the BIS with cinema primes and boosted adapted glass. It's no GH5, but I gotta assume it's fun. If you're looking for EU availlability, I usually just check http://geizhals.eu/?fs=gx80&in= .

  30. Thanks for the challenge Lintelfilm- sorry that's not something I can do right now. Why not try it yourself? You can guide the thread you start away from chaos ;). I did something similar recently when shooting the 8-bit 420 4K A7S II (downsampled to 1080p) against that 10-bit 422 C300 II and 8-bit 422 1DX II. For that studio environment, nobody could really tell which camera was which.

  31. Well, the lack of a tiltable screen on the X-Pro2 has been more of an annoyance than I'd hoped, especially for video. 4k, while not huge to me (or my 2011 Macbook Pro, which is choking on 4k files at the moment) is a plus, and mostly, of course, the stabilization. I've loved the photos I've gotten from the X-Pro2, as well as the excitement I get from using it, but the video has been average looking to me, nothing special- and with my only lens, the Fuji 35 2.0, not particularly steady. Maybe if Fuji were to unlock 4k in the camera to fix all the moire I'd reconsider, but I just have a feeling they won't; there's probably more than they've let on, like heat issues.

  33. Dave's video is fine. 4K 8-bit 422 becomes pseudo 10-bit Luma 8-bit Chroma 444 1080p. 'pseudo' as the 4 8-bit sample's variation summed to 10-bit is helped by noise/dither. Everything seen everywhere by consumers except in the theater is 8-bit 420. Only filmmakers/hobbyists/specialists will ever see > 8-bit (first need a 10+ bit display, graphics card, and OS/app support). Dithering/noise helps reduce banding, and downsampling 4K to 1080p helps reduce noise. Regardless of the math/tech, the A7x II hang well against the FS5 in the real world, and that's what really matters. The FS5 is a dedicated video camera, so it has other advantages beyond image quality.

  34. You can catch some dropped frames with any bitrate, but this number increases with increased bitrates, yes. It's not about sdcard I presume, it's mostly of the camera settings which can affect codec itself and it goes wild. I can tell that even with standart 80 mbps bitrate, before the hack FHD@120 have dropped frames. It's heavily affected by camera settings and enviroment of the record. Me too with sandisk 95MB\s But you need to test your footages, it easy to do in any video editor or player, you just need to find file properties and see is there variable or constant frame rate. It will tell you about dropped frames during the record of this file.

  42. I haven't done a direct comparison (I should), but I prefer the wind noise isolation (I live somewhere really windy) and the smaller size of the Rode Micro when using my G7/E-M5II cameras and I have the ability to record internally. The Shure is an excellent solution (others have noted its sensitivity, but lack of directionality), and I can also connect the Shure output to a camera that has an input to give be a backup recording (on both the VP83F and camera). It just has a few more steps involved (and to forget) then popping on the Rode Micro and plugging it in. I was thinking of the getting a couple of the Little DARlings as I can use them with lav mics as well as use them to record from any other type of mic (on or off camera). I use a couple of E-M5II due to the IBIS but I'm thinking of selling them (and my G7) for the GX80 so I will need some sort of external recording solution. I'll be left with GX80 and LX100 as my two cameras and neither of them has a mic input. I really want to focus on the smallest and quickest audio solution that will give me much better sound than the camera built-in mics. That is why I'm patiently waiting for the Instamic to ship.

  43. That is slog2/3. Color gamuts affect just the color response. Try the cine modes with the cinema/pro color mode if you want to avoid noise but still have a gradable image.

  44. Well, i usually do speeches, lectures, events and whatever pay me well haha Never got the chance to put the a6300 on one of these jobs, as i'm still geting used to it and seeing if i can really trust it for that kind of stuff, but its doing fine so far. I also do some short films, which is what i really like to do, and i am using it for an art video that a friend of mine is directing, first serious stuff where i decided to use it. I wasn't recording all the time, but the camera was always on in video mode with the screen turned on (what is usually enough for it to start overheating) for 3 hours with 30m of recorded footage. Overheating warning didnt even showned up, the camera was still in a "not so warm" stage and the cheap $15 (R$50) powerbank i've bought for tests only droped from 89% to 68%) Well, its pretty unbalanced for run n gun if you use the powerbank+fan setup. The cage may help in make it better to handle, but ergonomically its not the better choice. Without this setup the batery life sucks and you got overheating, so no good too. The worst part for the fan setup for run n gun its that the fan makes any audio from the camera unusable. The audio may come from an external recorder. But the image quality it gives speaks for itself and you can't find anything in its price point that beats it, especially in low light. Rolling shutter is bad but can be worked out planing your shoots and avoiding whip pans. Just keep in mind that the camera its just a tool and that you may have to choose the best tool for each job and work around the limitations of the tool you choose. The a6300 is about pure image quality, not ergonomics, ease of use and all that kind of stuff. For that stuff i still keep my G7, which fells way better than the sony and which i enjoy using far more than the sony. But if i need the best image quality i can get, low light or slow mo, i'll take the sony any day. Its a pain to use it, it fells wrong when you put a powerbank and a fan in it, but damn the images it makes...

  46. The NX1 video frames do look a lot like still photographs, heres a few shots I took from 4k video - http://imgur.com/a/CCBXl - it is so outstanding how sharp the image is (please note this image has grading, still WIP, but its not raw image). What I've realised too is, the camera handles bokeh differently between 4k video and 1080p video (or even photography), making it look like FF almost when in 4k. You can make the footage look as filmic or digital as you want. **The reason why theres very few actual good footage of the NX1 is due to the marketing structure. Many people bought it and use the kit lens and are amazed at the "out of focus background", this is a pro-sumer camera, that was marketed as a "bigger" higher end point n' shoot, besides its a very very new camera and system, very ew people actually risk going for it, considering lens selection and completely new system. Let me share with you a few great examples of how amazing this camera is :

  47. NX1 has less dynamic range + poor iso performance. These cameras are very different, NX1 definitely has more detail, GH4 probably even more, the thing is this doesn't translate to a "nice" image..... GH4 razor sharp, which makes it look like artificial "sharpened" video that's great for News broadcast, I would say the NX1 is in the same vein as the GH4. A7 cameras by Sony are more in vein with Canon 5D's, more sharper than 5D but not as "cynical" sharp as NX1 and GH4. Personally I still like the 5D Mark III, great colors and a well accepted image everyone likes. Truth be told I worked on a project shot on RED and the client liked the shots of a 5D Mark III better...... Sharpness/Detail is not always your friend........
