  2. My eyes are watering just imagining what such a contraption would do. Auto correct obviously decided you wanted to literally have a balls up situation instead of avoiding a balls up of the audio variety.

  4. Have you been digging through my camera bag? ? I do shoot with 2 cameras, and my second camera is a G7. I bought the G7 back in early 2016 for my honeymoon, it's what got me into M43. I purchased it specifically because I could shoot amazing stills and UHD video. My set up is as follows: GH5 is the A camera G7 is the B camera (hacked so i don't have the 30min record limit) RodeLink for my dialogue/explanations Azden SMX-30 for machine/room noises Saramonic sr-pax2 pre-amp to combine the RodeLink & SMX-30 signals as well provide enough clean gain so the gH5 is always set to -12 Besides a tripod, I've also got some cheap custom wall mounts I made so I could get shots where a tripod isn't feasible. Two of them are cheap articulated TV wall mounts, and the other is a wall mounted 4' light boom pole, that doesn't bat an eye at the G7 being mounted to it. Just today I purchased a Zoom F4 because B&H had them on sale for $420. I eventually want to get some testicle syncs as I hate manually syncing clips. I have two much light in the shop if you ask my wife, shes says it's like an ER. When everything is on, I'm dumping 86,400 Lumens out at 6500k.

  5. @wolf33d interesting information - thanks. The internet isn't keen to tell you the weaknesses of various products! In terms of the size, I'm sure that lots of accessories are (or will be) available for making the camera bigger - if only there were accessories available for making a camera smaller and lighter!! Then I might buy a C700 and as many accessories as it takes to make it the size of an RX100 ???

A few test shots from a recent location scout. I've been using my Canon 28mm f/1.8 lens a lot lately. It is just so versatile. I originally thought it would be too wide for my tastes as I usually prefer the 35mm-60mm focal lengths, but the ability to get a shallow depth, close up or a fairly, wide establishing shot has been great.

  7. What I recall is 99% of people that complained about media issues didn’t use cards from BMD’s list. I know that they also struggled to keep up with the SSD list because it takes a while to certify media and the manufacturers were constantly changing the performance. I vaguely recall one of the SSD drives that WAS recommended wouldn’t work when they went to the next generartion of the same branded media. That’s not on BMD. It is why they changed to CFAST though even though everyone seems to think SSD are the perfect solution and always work. Go look on BMD’s forums at the number of complaints over SSD’s with the original BMCC. I personally worry about USB-C as a port for reliable use. I would hope someon comes out with a cage or mount that locks that plug down. I’ll be sticking to CFAST. JB

  8. I don't know much, but the read/write speeds seem to suggest it'll work just fine. SanDisk is 500MB/s write and Samsung is 515MB/s write. I can't imagine the difference being enough to worry about I like the little loop in the corner, make's for a nice place to connect the drive to the camera, minimising risk of losing a connection.

  9. I bought the Lilliput A5 since my Sony's and Fuji's don't have a forward facing LCD. Only tinkered with it in test shots, but so far I like it. With the skinny Sony battery its not unwieldy on top of the camera. The bigger Sony batteries will run it all day. Found a seller on Ebay that had it ad $149 shipped obo. I offered $135 and they accepted, three days later it was in my hands. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lilliput-A5-5-1920x1200-8bit-4K-HDMI-DSLR-Camera-field-monitor-F970-LP-E6-Plate/263676993363?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 Chris

  10. No specific issues with BM and SD cards. The issue was that the Pocket cam required fast write speeds that very few cards had at the time. Card manufacturers were labeling cards with max read speed which confused users when they wouldn't work in the Pocket. BM's only fault was not clarifying this for users. Ultimately, it wasn't their fault, but they could have helped educate users to alleviate the frustrations. Whether BM's intention or not, the Pocket was eaten up by consumers who had little to no knowledge of card speeds.

  11. Yes, it is the drive that BM has been showing on their website and live at trade shows.

  12. I have the G9 and sold my GH5. I do primarily wildlife photography/videography but occasionally do promotional videos. Things I love about the camera: Although it doesn't have Vlog-L, Cine-D is fine for what I do. I usually record in 60p, 4k. The colors right out of the camera are very Canon-like. Need very little post-tweaking if any. The image stabilization is amazing with this camera. Better than the GH5 IMO. I have a gimbal but rarely use it as the footage is usually stable enough w/o one. The viewfinder does have a bit of pin cushion, but doesn't bother me. I've gotten use to it and don't even notice it. Love the ergonomics of the camera. The grip is perfect. Autofocus in video mode is great. Don't really have any complaints at all. Very close to Canon/Sony. Things I don't like: Limited to 10 min when using 60p, 4k. (If I'm staking out a peregrine nest and just want to leave the camera run, I have to monitor the camera.) Highlight roll-off is the same as the GH5. You really need to be careful not to overexpose. Autofocus in stills mode for BIF (birds-in-flight) is not the best, especially when attempting to focus on birds in the foreground with busy backgrounds. It always locks focus on the background and can't focus on foreground subjects. Since I do a combination of both stills and video, this is a real good fit for me. I also have the A7III but don't like the fact that I still need to schlepp around large, heavy telephoto lenses. The G9 with the 100-400mm for video/stills is liberating!

  13. You are holding it wrong @jonpais ? But yeah ergonomics with A7/9 line is not great. It might be fine with a pancake lens, but once you put something heavy you can feel the extra strain in your hand. The battery grip helps a bit, but still nothing close to the ergonomics of the Nikon Dx/Dxxx lines.

  16. I think BM will do well with ths box. Official support by both Apple for the OS and BM for Resolve should mean not only reliability but also a high degree of optimisation. Obviously with the emphasis on should. That, and being available to walk into an Apple store and take one home, will probably tip the balance for people over the better value available by rolling their own solution. And the value is all relative of course if you have to factor in your own time in the initial setup and configuration, potential conflicts and troubleshooting when either the OS or Resolve gets updated and the performance gap being narrowed anyway by optimisation. Realistically, most people want enough power to get the job done and anything above that is a bonus. If this bumps 13" Macbook Pro power enough to deal with Pocket 4K footage efficiently end to end then I think that is a large audience right there. In the same vein, I expect to perhaps see BM release a repackaged version of the Fairlight audio accelerator at IBC to do for audio what this is doing for video. If it's a similar price (and it will probably be less) then that will mean BM will have put the power of what were not that very much long ago absolute elite end tools on our desktops for about £1000. Increiblde really to think that when we would install Fairlight FAME consoles it was routine for a team of 3 of us to be on site to commission it for at least 3 days anywhere in the world and you can now just download it !

  20. I quite like the image quality in both these videos but the pacing is killing me.. in the first one with all the slow focus pulls from static background to a static foreground object (rock or piece of paper, etc.) are just too much of a snooze for me.. sorry, I couldn't finish. I feel like for shots like that to hold interest they need to have at least some interesting motion going on (camera or subject), or just phenomenal composition / framing / color / etc., like gallery-quality landscape photography. My suggestion would be to hold all the shots for way less time and try and tell a bit more of a story from the sequencing at least in terms of a progression between spaces or time frames. In the kid video I quite liked the tree climbing section at the beginning because it's all shot so tight and there's a huge 3D feel because of all the parallaxing of the branches and the body, but then it got pretty boring with just walking through fields and stuff so I couldn't finish it. I'm sure it's an awesome video for a parent though, since watching your kid play is endlessly entertaining. Sorry, don't mean to sound negative, I'm a total amateur here so not trying to come across as some kind of expert. And just so this post is not all critique I'll put some of my own vacation stuff out here to be cut up :). This video is from a trip to Granada, Spain a couple years back: There's lots of static backgrounds in this video too, which can be pretty boring, so I tried to keep the visual interest with a lot of camera motion, probably too much in fact (most of it is walking with the camera on a gimbal, hence the title), and trying to find some interesting people scenes in the environments. Tech specs: Sony A7R2, Zeiss 24mm f/1.8, Sony FE 55mm f/1.8, Sony 10-18mm f/4, PilotFly H2. In terms of making static landscape shots visually interesting, I'm a big fan of Camille Marotte's stuff (example below). He captures a lot of beautiful details in a travel context and often does a great job composing with very simple elements - e.g. the opening shots of this video with an out-of-focus arm resting on a boat, framing an ocean sunset or the sun flaring into the lens as it moves across the ripped edge of a tarp. And of course there's the people.. in travel videos I find we all yearn to see the people since so much of what defines the flavor of a location is the people themselves.

  21. Am thinking if you export to an OMF (how big is it?) then maaaaybe (no promises! I'm a total n00b at post audio, but willing to take a shot at it) I might do some audio tweaks for you? Clean up a little bit of some spots of dialogue. As I've been thinking AATranslator might be worthwhile for me to spend on.

  22. Nice video, especially the funny bits from Grandma! I did a bunch of research before I ended up with RVMP+ and the TAKSTAR SGC-598 and Pixel MC-50 seemed to get positive reviews, and at $40 or less are HUGELY cheaper than the Rode or the Azden. However the reason I went with the Rode was that those two mics are quite large and I'm trying to fly under the radar with my setup, so that matters to me. I'd watch a bunch of reviews to see if there's a reason to pay more than $40...

  23. Hahahaha! "Are you sure you're supposed to have that thing on?" (pointing at microphone) Love it when the grandma thinks she is more of an expert than you!

  24. I concur Jon's comments. Kudos to Vasha : ) Not only night footage (to prove with the right settings, this camera can be a low light killer : P) but also daily footage. To those used to bash this wonderful piece of technology to infer it as too videoish, here you have what a pilot or competent shooter means. Coupled to the proper glass under control to know the limits of your acquisition tool, why do we need another capture device BTW? ; ) @webrunner5 you are on the spot, Don... my 8 years of Montenegro can only confirm you that : -)

  25. I only watched on my phone without headphones, but it doesn't sound... Terrible... But it doesn't sound great either, ha ha. The micro is really great for Sony and Panasonic cameras, but not so much for Canon. You're going to want to get a mic that can add +20 dB so that you can turn your camera audio levels down as far as possible. I've been using my friend's Azden SMX-15 and I really, really like it.

    Sony a7 III discussion

Been using the A7 III with the new Tamron 28-75 for a couple of day. Great camera overall. Lots of improvement compared with my older A7RII. Much better than the GH5 for the same price. In fact a totally different league for stills. For video the AF is so unusable on the GH5 and so good on the A7 that it's also a kill for me. The cons are still the shitty menus even though I could set up my own ones. There are still some frustrating shits from Sony. For exemple I set up the dial "1" for 4K and the dial "2" for 120p with specific settings. Great. Now I can only set once and forever what shooting mode (aperture priority, manual...) for those otherwise I have to completely start over. What it means is in "1" and "2" mode that you use with the dial, you cannot choose even in the menus your shooting mode. This is ridiculous. Many frustrating and ridiculous ergonomic stuff like this. Also the camera is way too short. The grip is fine for a kid or small woman hand but not a man, what were they thinking? But much overall better than before. And IQ is great, 120p is great, AF is great, IBIS is fine, S35 mode is fantastic ... Definitely the best camera on the market for 2K and that Tamron 28-75mm is fantastic. 800 bucks and 550g for a 28-75mm f/2.8 is killing it. Combo works well on my Crane Plus. Until the A7SIII is out there is nothing better at that price. EDIT: this might fix the grip too short problem https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1334069-REG/really_right_stuff_ba9_base_plate_base_plate_for_sony.html?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwyrvaBRACEiwAcyuzRCIVpadM8fw7qzuDhV_PDMbeD_m0_IQY1m06fG9E_t2KTAqy-MEt-xoCn-wQAvD_BwE&smp=y

  27. That is not entirely true... I imagine the FS RAW out of the FS700 is very similar to the FS RAW out of the FS5 (both 12bit linear and from very similar if not the same sensor). I can tell you that both the raw to CDNG and the raw to Prores HQ 422 recorded to an Atomos Shogun Inferno are considerably better/more flexible than the original Slog 2/3 10 bit files, both from an FS5 or even an FS7. It could be that Slog files -which are not as flat as Slog 2&3- are "less strained" and can handle pushing in post better (can't know for sure because I haven't used an F3), but I doubt it. FS RAW out of the FS5 is only SLog2, so in practical terms most of the times I end up recording a Prores HQ 422 Slog2 file that is slightly better than the clean uncompressed 10bit 422 file out of the SDI without the raw license. If I need an extra headroom, I always have Cinema DNG. Plus, am I wrong assuming the FS700 raw license also unlocks framerates and resolutions not available before such as UHD/4K 60p? I know it's still far from the 16 bit raw of an F5 or F55, but I wouldn't consider it a step down from an F3.

My problem with looking for things to adapt to M mount was that I started looking at real M mount lenses and well one thing led to another.... In my defence it was a bargain. In Leica terms at least

  29. I, too, switched from 7" to 5" because the large screen was unwieldy. However, the size was not an issue for locked off tripod shots. It was just a problem for handheld or those occasional really tight spaces. I could see 7" being perfect for a one man show, where I assume you'll be using a tripod most of the time. However, if you ever do another project with a crew or handheld shots, I think the 5" will be more useful. Either way, what about using a long HDMI cable and bringing the monitor with you, rather than leaving it on the camera? You can just set it down out of frame when you're ready to roll.

  30. As I said it depends on your requirements & none of the shots in that video were over a couple of seconds.

  31. Seems like they are not focussed on the camera (similar performance as other top of the line smartphones). That would be the only reason I would have bought this. Too bad, would have loved a camera that shoots cinematic images that I always have with me.

  34. Also worth mentioning, the new MBP are really fast. The high end model as better single core CPU performance than the best IMAC PRO. The overall performance jump both in CPU and GPU vs 2017 models is enormous. The new DDR4 memory is very fast. And the faster SSD are out of this world. In fact PC manufacturer should feel ashamed, as seen in the attached picture.

    DJI Ronin S

Finally got our Ronin-S review finished! Really loving this gimbal. Although....at the end of the day, if you have an extra operator, the MoVI with all the FIZ control is going to be better. The Ronin-S is a Z Crane killer.
