    RED's new toy?!

hmmm.... i've got some bad news for you bud

  2. I've received exclusive info from a trusted source to exactly what this new gizmo does: 1. VR, Holographic, 3D and some other cool sounding stuff that actually does sound cool but we have to use our imagination into exactly how it will work. 2. New Module - RED Car Control. Simply control your actual car in a VR Google map. Pretend it has guns to shoot other cars in your way. (Bluetooth and Cruise Control vehicles only). 3. New Module - RED Nightmare Grenade. Record and play your worst nightmares in REDs r3d codec at up to 8k 120fps and share your experience online in VR. 4. New Module - RED Weapon Tank. Convert your RED Weapon into a tank so you can film it blow up stuff at 1000fps. 5. New Module - RED Blast Radius. Use your Hydrogen radar module to identify Google, Apple and Samsung phones around you. Detonate them with a single touch. 6. New Module - RED Interrogator. Use your phone's A.I assistant (like Siri but angry and military like) to question other peoples camera choices as they are inferior to RED. 7. Camera Expansion - RED MAX. Combine your phone with RED's new RED MAX projector that can predict the future of all other camera brand resolutions and frame rates. Comes with canned laughter. (the projector comes at up to IMAX size and can also be combined with helicopter propellors for RED SKY IMAX. 8. Camera Expansion - RED Chain Bomb. You can "daisy chain" all RED Hydrogen phones together by Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to create a holographic RED logo in the sky which explodes into red fireworks. Doing this increases your RED Weapons ISO temporarily to ISO 3000,400,700,201. 33. It's so sensitive that you can actually film through objects. 9. Firmware Update - RED Handed. This is sort of like Apple's "Find Your iPhone" app, but this actually detects if someone has stolen the phone and activates an electric shock so the robber drops your phone. It then has wings that come out the sides and flies back to you. 10. Firmware Update - Code RED. Write your own code and add features to your RED Weapon camera, such as a Disney film app or even better, a library of War genre films to watch while you judge exposure on your shoot. The trusted source also said the price for the phone is just for the actual shell of the phone, and you will have to buy all the separate components and modules to make it work. Each module is rumoured to be priced around $47,500 and there will be 437 to choose from by 2019. Text messaging will be added as firmware update in 2020 and it will cost a cut-price of $23,000. Ok, ok....it's Friday, I've finished for the day and I fancied have a mess around. But of course, this is all true!

  3. It's done! Really happy with it especially when compared to the Sankor 16-S I had a couple years ago. It's pretty heavy but not too bad. The RAFCamera clamps are absolutely perfect and excellent quality. The posted shot was literally me running out into the alley and snapping a shot on auto. Thanks for everyone's help on this!

  4. Its more like, we don't care. My apple keyboard does what it should. Never felt the need to change it. I of course know there are "better" stuff around, its the same with everything and all products. I'm sure there are better keyboard, TV, Toilet, Car, Etc than the one you use as well. But that doesn't mean that its because "you assume yours is the best"...

  5. I actually had a brief go of my friends GH5 with my Sigma glass using the IBIS. Although I'm used to it with the Sony cameras, the Panasonic version is different. It's actually much smoother, whereas the Sony IBIS is more sensitive to robotic jolts in movement. Yep, the client felt very comfortable with the camera and love the fact they could see the footage with a LUT applied via the Shogun Inferno. On professional basis, you can't ignore the value that this brings to a set. Making the client happy is always No.1 - even if you disagree with them. I think 98% of video shooters suffer from GAS, as do musicians and other gadget geeks..... The FS5 was a great asset on this particular shoot and I did enjoy using it. The only thing is that my shoots are getting much increased camera movement, and this is where the FS5 gets put down in favour of the A6500 or A7S II. You could argue that i could put the FS5 on a quick release and fly it on a Ronin-M - however I've actually done that and I would come away from the shoot in absolute agony form operating. I don't enjoy being in agony, hence why i got the A6500 and Zhiyun Crane for gimbal work. Much easier and enjoyable.

  7. Wish there were more posts like these. With all of the arguing over specs and brands, I think we can learn a lot from this post. With a humble AF100, which can be bought for less than $700 on the used market, a great looking film can be made. With a couple grand more, an amazing looking film can be made. In the end, I didn't care what camera those movies were shot with. I was engaged with the story. I want to see both finished films now.

    RED's new toy?!

I like the design of the handset, it looks like RED will build an ecosystem around it but will just put out the handset first and the rest is still far off. The start of something I think.

I expect Reduser will be collectively moist and greeting it like the invention of fire but I have to confess that I've no idea what it even is. I read the press release twice and still don't know. I felt like this fella.

  16. It is good to see that I am not the only one thinking that Apple's both Magic Mouse and Keyboard are invitation to disaster in terms of ergonomics. I've recently purchased a 2017 iMac. Both wireless keyboard and magic trackpad 2 are still in the box, which I plan to sell them. If you are interested, send me a PM Recently, while awaiting the iMac to arrive, I had to use an 2011 MacBook Pro 13". I couldn't believe how comfortable the keys were on that machine compared to my previous Retina MacBook Pro. It was as if I had typed on a flat surface for so long that I'd forgotten what it is like to type comfortably. I've recently purchased a boxed Apple Wireless Keyboard from 2003 from Ebay. It is a temporary solution until I find a good mechanical keyboard. Also, if you are using a USB keyboard or mouse, especially those with extra buttons and keys, make sure you check out USBOverdrive or similar applications to modify certain keys to your preferences. You can create custom profiles if you like. For example, when you are in Final Cut, you may choose to use certain macro keys to perform certain actions. You can create a dedicated editor keyboard

  17. Well here are some facts for you @Michal Gajdoš ... of your last 14 comments on eosHD, spanning over a year, 13 of them were a negative response to a positive or negative review, article or comment about Canon. In most of these responses you were either 1. sophomoric 2. rude or 3. outright insulting. So I believe you are the definition of a troll. To the matter at hand, your entire argument is based on two things that you reiterate over and over and over and over again. If someone shows you proof against those two things, you declare it is old data or ignore it completely. Just so I am not lumped into the 3 other arguments you've created in this post, let's break down our discussion... 1. You claim that cell phone cameras will kill the entire camera market. ~ I agreed it is having an effect on the consumer market. ~ I also stated that you aren't taking into consideration how much middle aged enthusiasts will spend on a hobby. ~ I furthered my point that cell phones cannot completely destroy the entire camera market because of the professional photographer. Are you following the progression of events, or should I make my argument simpler for you? 2. Your biggest "evidence" for the future demise of Canon is Kodak and Nokia ~ This argument has been repeated and refuted over the years, ad nauseum, and I'm unsure how many times Kodak and Nokia can illogically be used in this discussion? ~ Kodak and Nokia made one product... film/film services and cell phones, respectively ~ Canon is a multi-national conglomerate with divisions that span cameras, lenses, medical imaging, medical leasing, printing... they have money to lose and money to spend, so your Kodak and Nokia analogy is not an accurate analogy. That was our discussion and I am unsure why you decided to get so hostile and insulting? I'm unsure how many times I need to say that I don't completely disagree with this article. In fact... ~ I have agreed on multiple occasions that Canon needs more innovation. ~ But I refuse to say that Canon hasn't innovated at all in the past 10 years or even 5 years because that would either be a lie or an ignorant statement. ~ I would like to see Canon do more with video in the DSLR/DSLM form factor. It is absolutely ridiculous that the 6D2, a $2000 camera, doesn't have better video. I don't understand it... but I bet you Canon does. ~ Do I agree with their strategy? NO. ~ Has their strategy been working for them? YES. So what does that tell you? Please I would love to know your market analysis on why Canon, the laziest, least innovative company in the world, still is the top earner in camera and lens sales? While you're at it, could you explain to me why in their home market does Canon beat Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and Fuji in mirrorless sales and are only second to Olympus? How is that possible? I mean... they have horrible 1080p video? And you are correct, I am not a professional, but I have never claimed to be... hell some may say I am a pretty mediocre amateur. And you are also correct that I do have too much time on my hands, but I choose to spend my free time attempting to learn, yet you solely come here to bash Canon and insult any person who disagrees with you. So let me ask you one more question... is that really a productive use of your spare time? I mean, did Canon steal your girlfriend from you? Did they bully you on the playground and take your lunch money? Did Canon get drunk and smack around you and your mom when you were a kid? No...? Then why are you so angry at Canon and anyone who disagrees with you about Canon? In conclusion, I really don't care about this topic. I made a few comments throughout, but I didn't realize we were following some kind of sanctioned, debate rules. If you want to believe that Canon will go out of business because Kodak and Nokia did... I really don't care. If you want to believe the camera market will be destroyed by the cell phone market... okay whatever. Have fun.

  18. I tried the updated app on my iphone 6. It works fine for viewing or downloading photos. As a remote control for the camera though, it's useless. You can see what the camera is seeing and touch focus. That's it, nothing else works. There's no onscreen button for taking a photo!

  21. Its a decent combination and value thats for sure. I don't know whether the subject separation on that 300mm with it being on an M43 would be ideal and its really hard to judge any long lens on M43 because flickr pools which are my normal gauge only ever have pictures of birds, planes or the moon for anything over 150mm on an M43 ! They also weren't on my radar because APS-C was the limit for me regarding low light but 6400 would generally be OK but you'd be surprised how poor the lighting is at some major stadiums. Its improved a lot in the UK since BT got the rights funnily enough and insisted on additional lighting. They obviously wanted to shoot on M43! I've actually used M43 cameras as remotes behind the goal a few times (the OMD-10) but the battery life just couldn't hack the amount of exposures it was having to do. My faith in Fuji being serious about getting into the game is dwindling unfortunately so I think its going to end up being a system I only use for covering stuff like cycling and boxing etc where you don't need the longer stuff.

  22. Good stuff. I always thought the Olympus E-M1 II would make quite a nice compact telephoto choice for sports, with it's blazing speeds and nice 300mm F4 pro lens. Pair that with the 40-150mm F2.8 pro lens and it's quite versatile even in low light at ISO 6400. Wouldn't go much above that though.

  24. Use a small Bluetooth earpiece and you can monitor it live with those two bits I linked to Jon. You don't have to wear it all the time (unless you wanted the 'And now over to our correspondent in Vietnam' effect!) but just pop it on as you go into record for a quick confidence check.

  25. @BTM_Pix C'mon BTM_Pix, "banding" is some kind of hater speak...In my eyes, this is a new kind of artistic effect invented by Sony - ES-SST (Electronic Shutter - Sony Striping Technology)...As it works only sporadically at the moment (and only when using ES) on the A9, Sony is working on a firmware upgrade to insure the functionality of this revolutionary striping effect in almost every lighting situation possible...So please consider, that's not a bug ("phenomenon" in manufaturer speak), but a feature... Rumors say, they work on an app for their Sony MemoryApp Collection too, as many other users of A7X and A6X00 cameras want to get this famous "striping effect" too...This SST-App will cost 10 USD, but hey, it's cheap for such an useful feature...

  27. I'd have struggled to understand a fair amount of the answers without the subtitles if it was a podcast to be honest I was actually considering at one point if maybe they shot it on 5Ds because the cameras themselves would've been provided by the hosts. If this was the 'old' days of the Soviet Union (which I think Putin wishes it was), security concerns would've meant them not allowing new fangled technology in. Mind you, it was also a pride thing then too where they'd use their own versions of the western technology that they'd copied and often enhanced. MIghtn't have been a bad thing these days, imagine it : "You use our new Canonski Shest MK DVA. It is like your Canon 6D Mark 2. But made of cast iron. And has 4K" Putin's personal photographer also uses Canon so perhaps he felt more at ease seeing those cameras around him. Looking at his personal photographer, I'm sure I'd feel at ease too if she was around.... If I was into conspiracies (which of course I am!!!) then maybe the look was also a deliberate bit of propaganda done to not beautify the subject and his surroundings. You could take that one way - which was to make Putin more relatable - or the other way to make him and his surroundings all look a bit shabby and low end. Its like whenever the BBC have a news item or documentary that includes TV adverts they always seem to get the advert, record it onto VHS, put it by a huge magnet, dub it onto another VHS where the tracking is fucked and then get a VHS camera to record it off a TV that they found in a skip. The message obviously being 'Look and behold how horrendous and grubby TV advertisements are compared to our beautiful images. Please keep giving us your license money so we don't have to sully your screen with this garbage'. Whatever the reason though, after just starting to watch the first episode, I think the content trumps the technical for me.

  28. I did give them some feedback and they passed it on down the chain, so that's good of them... and yes - I think there are people at Canon who would like great video as much as we would do, and I am sure some Canon staff are actual enthusiasts and film for a hobby outside the main job. I will always carry on the crusade to get them to listen, and I will always be in the market for a Canon that does interesting stuff. Just bought an EOS M for Magic Lantern raw video with c-mount lenses. Canon Japan owe Magic Lantern a big thank you for the way they have kept the flame of passion alive somewhat for us in the absent of official video features.

  29. Jon, keep your old keyboard safe It's surprising how many big companies worth many billions don't have a guy sat in a small office like Jobs obsessing over 'feel'. It sounds so hippy, just that word 'feelings'. Every time I pick up a camera or electronic device I want to it to feel nice, simple as that. Keys should have travel. They should be silent. I mean this is basic shit for Jobs and he left nobody at Apple in his place, it seems, with the sensitivity to 'get it' and the ruthlessness to enforce these things... So tappy-cheapo keys we get. The weight shaved off is good. The secret to USB C is not to buy dongles but to replace all your old USB cables with the right ones Any old USB device with a detachable cable can have one single USB C cable going from it to the Mac with no converter or USB dongle in sight!

  32. These days I wanted to test the maximum bitrates with hack NX/KS. I've found that to get the maximum bitrates you need to turn off all the functions that require memory and cpu: So if I turn off bluetooth, all the automatic functions, and close the display by going on EVF can go up to 220Mbit/s without interruption and up to 240Mbit/s for about a minute. The benefit that is obtained is that the macroblochin is reduced in size, transforming itself from small squares into a noise-like grain. What I think is that if the hack could turn off the display and the EVF being recorded, the NX1 could go over 250Mbit/s without any recording time limit.

  34. @DBounceNever owned them, but I think they would be amazing on the GH5...If you could rent a combo as a tryout, that would of course be ideal...a pro-shooter at DVXUser owns the combo and he's very satisfied...as you know though, these are pricey but you get true Cinema Primes...really nothing to equal them for the price though...like you I was keeping my eye on the Terra 6K too...completely underwhelmed in the end by the footage...IMO the GH5 blows past it....I bought the Leica 12-60 to use purely as a lens, to use with the GH5 auto rack focus..to my surprise (I don't buy Panny Native Lenses) this has not come off the GH5....I love this thing...In combo with your DX1, a GH5 and Veydra Primes you'd have a "shoot anything" production package IMO...especially narrative...personally I would opt for the 12, 25 & 50 kit at around 2800 including a 6 lens Pelican case...then shoot 4K ETC so the 12 also becomes 18, the 25 a 35, and the 50 a 70...you land up with 6 focal lengths and if Vedra developes their Anamorphic primes, you have room in the case.

  35. @Michal Gajdoš Both are dead now... Obviously - from your own examples - NOT. Further...Yahoo, Altavista, first mover - and dust now....Google was NOT first mover. But it's a successful company. It's not important to be first mover, it's much more important to have a successful & sustainable business strategy. Economy is NOT about dreaming around or beeing "first mover". It's survival of the fittest...At long term... GM? Just saying to lower their sales expectations for 2017...Just another patient in coma... Personally I don't like this idea at all, but nowadays general economic power and market share sometimes just kill innovations / an innovative attitude....

  37. I shot a short film for the Rode contest recently here (vote for it too please if you liked it!): https://www.rode.com/myrodereel/watch/entry/4364 I used my GX85 with the Cine-D mod by @BTM_Pix and it worked great! Lenses used were the Voigtlander 17.5mm, SLR Magic 35mm f/0.95 and (mostly) the Rokinon 85 with Metabones XL Speedbooster. I was really happy with the look and how everything turned out. I did accidentally shoot on Portrait for a couple clips (not sure how, but I may have subconsciously switched it to "movie mode" instead of "C" where my Cine-D mode was saved on). I loved being able to shoot with such a small camera, and I intentionally tried to bring as little gear as possible to just keep things simple and not have to worry about which lens I should be using all the time! I was definitely pleasantly surprised at how well the audio turned out too. I used Rode Lavaliers and was surprised at how I did not get any wind noise and barely any rustling sounds from clothing. Let me know what your thoughts are and if you had any questions for me. I'll be happy to answer them!

  38. Here is some crappy test footage I've made using my B&H mod. The first test uses a 14mm helicoid, with the original polyurethane/prototype housing: The second test uses a 30mm helicoid (which allows focus down to about 8-9 inches) and a custom-fit aluminum housing that replaces the polyurethane: All footage was shot using my beloved silver Helios-44. Except for a few underexposed shots where I boosted the brightness, all footage is straight out of the camera & unaltered (I'm far too new at this to attempt color grading, anyways).
