The issue is logistics. The show I’m on now shoots in Atlanta but editorial is in LA. Dailies needs to be available next morning synced and ready to edit. We shoot three cameras on almost every scene. We shoot about two hours per camera per day of footage. Ar least once per episode we shoot 2 units so you can double that again. That’s a lot of footage that has to be graded, transcoded to DNX (Avid) and stored safely in three locations (archives). Every day. For weeks and weeks. RAW data rates would swamp a production. The network I currently shoot for AIRS in 720 and masters at 1080. They don’t need RAW. There’s ZERO advantage, especially if you’re shooting a nice 12bit file like ProRes 444. JB3 points -
Did you actaully ban Damphousse from this forum based on this discussion? Gunns tweets were completely out of line. Sorry, but 'fucking little boys' is not comedy and talk like that should not be normalised. The number of Paedophilia 'jokes' he makes is also quite alarming.3 points

Pretty epic teaser! Looks like NR was accurate with the scheduled announcement info, big budget marketing campaign etc. Here is the recap: We are one week away from the rumored new Nikon full-frame mirrorless camera announcement. I have received some new pricing information, this time from Europe (I assume the prices are for a lens kit): Nikon 45MP full frame mirrorless camera: €4,000 (around $4,670, 20% VAT included in price) Nikon 24MP full frame mirrorless camera: €2,500 (around $2,900) One possible (rumored) scenario is that 45MP Nikon mirrorless full-frame camera will be announced first (at the end of July) while the second 24MP Nikon mirrorless full-frame camera could be announced at Photokina. The shipping of at least one of the new Nikon mirrorless full-frame cameras is rumored to start at the end of August or in early September. The upcoming mirrorless full-frame camera is rumored to be the most expensive Nikon marketing campaign ever with bloggers meetups in exotic locations and maybe even some celebrities involvement. Here is a recap of the already rumored Nikon mirrorless full-frame camera details: Two Nikon full-frame mirrorless cameras expected: one with 24-25MP and one with 45MP (48MP is also a possibility) - I reported the two sensors configurations in October last year. BSI sensors (supposed to be a new tech with advanced AF). Similar body size to the Sony a7 camera but with better ergonomics and a better grip. Nikon is putting a lot of emphasis and effort into the shooting experience of the new mirrorless camera. The camera was designed with ergonomics in mind. 5-axis in-body stabilization 9fps New mirrorless mount. We already knew that, but the number I was given this time is 55mm. The Z-mount dimensions I reported a few months ago were 49mm for the actual opening and 65.4mm for the entire mount diameter. The new mirrorless mount will allow for f/0.95 lenses - remember the NOCT trademark and f/0.9 lens patents? Memory cards: XQD and CF Express - now this is a surprise for me, but it is what I have heard (ProGrade is coming with a CF Express card). EVF resolution: 3.6MP (update: I am not sure if this is MP or million dots, the translation could be wrong since the specs originally came from Asia) Initially, three lenses will be announced: 24-70mm f/4, 35mm and 50mm (I think the 35 and 50mm will be f/1.4). There is also talk about a 24mm, but it may come later. What system do you cut on? That Synology Nas is a good unit. Fill it with 8 drives in a raid 10 config and it will be plenty fast as long as you install a 10gbe card in it and use a 10gbe to thunderbolt adaptor. Using the 1gbe connections will not give you the speed you need. Do you need to share the data on it with other users?2 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
kye and one other reacted to Savannah Miller for a topic
John Brawley said that and it's true. 90% of American TV shows seem to be shot on the Alexa in 1080p Prores 4:4:4. Very few people do RAW or 4K, and if they do 4K it's usually Sony cameras shooting XAVC. Only times you see raw are very high-end TV shows and RED shows for Netflix. With now the Alexa LF, I'm sure a lot of shows will switch back to Arri. It's not because of storage either because a lot of productions are fine with shooting even prores XQ, it's the extra costs of shooting RAW which people don't like. I work in VFX where you occasionally will have shots where you push the Prores files harder than you ever would in grading and I generally see no issues. Even when I do greenscreen stuff, the Alexa does 4:2:2 HQ during slow motion shots, and even then, those files are pretty robust too.2 points -
Maybe he was guilty of it himself and figured 'less talking, more doing'. Et voilá, the result! That in turn of course should motivate and inspire us to pick up our cameras and do the same! If I had a location and model as such, I certainly would. ?2 points

It doesn't matter who led the online attack that took down Gunn. The point is that whatever you do, you gonna have people (Trump, anti-trump, SJW, alt-right, liberals, conservatism, ultra-religious, atheist, etc.) launching personal Vendetta against you. In this case, it may have been Trump supporters but tomorrow it will be someone else. Trump supporters helped to put the guy in the office so there is a relation. However I agree with you, I don't think that all the Trump' voters are dumb. Sure, there are a bunch of KKK guys and rednecks in the mix but many people are just regular folks who were tired of the endless political hypocrisy of Washington and decided to "kick the hornet nest" by supporting Trump or Sanders. That's the problem, the debate is completely polarized, there is no middle ground and reasonable discussion. Now it's all about extreme positions, taking offense, and online hysteria spread on internet by some keyboard warriors, calling for “murder” and other festivity to whoever falls under the outrage of the day. It seems that the era of Roman games and public stoning is not so far behind us after all. I think that this is a dangerous trend for our society. I'm out. Cheers2 points

Difference between original Speed booster and the Ultra 0.71x
Emanuel and one other reacted to Brian Caldwell for a topic
The Ultra uses a significantly better optical design, with very high MTF and insignificant corner falloff. As a result, the Ultra will sharpen up any lens that is attached to it, including the Zeiss Otus series. Below is a very detailed MTF comparison of the original M43 Speed Booster, the Ultra, and the XL. The XL is also very sharp, but is a little more specialized than the Ultra.2 points -

I dont agree with the first point at all - in fact I havent bothered reading his 'jokes' because whether they are funny or not I think is irrelevant. And I definitely dont think you should sack a film director because his jokes arent funny. The second point is far more salient. What it comes down to is this. There are many things we say to our friends - call it pub talk - which can be enjoyed between us because we are friends and we know each other. But it is ill-advised/stupid/problematic to transfer your 'pub talk' to the internet because it is both bound to be taken out of context and likely to cause offense. Afterall, there are some things that you say to your mates that you dont say to your grandmother. And if your response to that is 'not really, you dont know my grandmother' - I would say 'exactly'.1 point -

Andrew, I'm not American, have lived both in the UK and Australia and from a multicultural background but this is not about people not having a sense of humour. Let's say a person you didn't know all that well kept joking about 'fucking young boys', while the jokes aren't all that funny he concluded with 'just joking yeah!'. A few years later it's found that those jokes were based on something more real. Do you look back and think 'well the writing was on the wall'. Could something have been done to prevent the outcome? Are Gunns jokes still jokes if we find out that he himself is a paedophile in a few years time? If Gunn's jokes were about a third party like Machael Jackson or the Catholic church, it becomes a different kettle of fish as it's not a direct reflection of a person's character. Joking about committing disgraceful acts yourself though, should be used to judge character. At what point do we start showing concern if everything is 'just a joke'? Is joking about raping women ok in your eyes? Should women just 'lighten up' and accept jokes about rape? By making this acceptable 'banter', you you dilute the issue socially and over time, make this behaviour the norm making it hard to decider when concern should be raised. There are plenty of comedians who are able to be funny without relying on poor taste punch lines like Gunn's. His reliance is on shock value to get a reaction and it's pretty pathetic to be honest.1 point -

That would be a very sad thing, kidzrevil. I always enjoy looking at your work, but I've gotta agree, I'm finding it increasingly uncomfortable to come here and read these opinion pieces. It's not a one-off either. There have been an increasing amount of posts here (not Andrew's, but on this forum) that I've found pretty reprehensible – there was a topic a few months ago where posters made fun of an initiative to encourage more female filmmakers in pretty vulgar terms. I have learned so much from a lot of very talented posters here over the years but I really think discussion with a more political bent should be taken elsewhere. I think it's important to encourage open discourse wherever possible, and that's a hugely important role that films do very well, but when it quickly turns into ugly insults being thrown around I think it's clear these forums are not the place. I feel like this is a trend and I hope Andrew finds a way to reverse it.1 point -

As we're discussing travel videos, I'm curious about your feelings about duration. I think that the "parties involved" tend to go towards too much length due to having an emotional connection while an un-involved viewer might be better served with a short clip of only 1 or maybe maximum 2 minutes? Maybe split a longer clip up into multiple shorter ones with a specific theme? Obviously if it is to be posted via Social Media, attention span of most viewers is more like 10 to 30 seconds.1 point -

Here you go. I think this guy is one F ing sick puppy to be honest. He is a creepy bastard, I don't give a crap how long ago it was. Normal people would NEVER think about this kind of stuff, never even say it to a friend, let alone the whole damn world. As a father with both sons and daughters that is some damn upsetting behavior. And no I don't think that kind of behavior does change. You can't go from some pervert mentality to being the wonderful guy living next door, and have him baby sit your young kids, Yea right. People really never change. You are what you are deep down inside, You can put on an act for a week or so, but you will always be what you are, especially in times of stress and anger. A super kind person is never going to be a cruel jackass, and some cruel person is Never going to be kind day in and day out. My brother and I are complete opposites. He is laid back as heck, kind, never cusses, doesn't really drink, never smoked, and I am a polar opposite of him, I do ALL the things I said he doesn't and more LoL. Haha love how big that mount looks! I think Nikon are desperately trying not to make the same mistake they did with the F-mount size Hoping they are going for a 5x7 ratio rather than the typical narrow 3 x 5. This demostrates one thing I realized years ago, which unfortunately many others didn't, that I will absolutely be teaching my daughter when she is old enough. Social media is dangerous,. When you put something out there, its out there. You can never take it back and the wrong thing can destroy your life, reputation and carreer. As for Gunn, I a haven't read them all. The ones I have read do appear to be jokes as he has said. I can see how many would find them offensive but the thing is these tweets as far as I know were from many years ago. People do change and it sucks that fact is not even a consideration, I am sure just about everyone here has done ore said something that could be used against them. I also don't know the context for these tweets, I believe they were from a time when he was not well known at all so these could have been tweets for his friends were he was intentially pushing the limits.1 point

As @buggz says, you can get all the versions new from http://www.digitalfilmtools.com/dft/ who originally developed it for Tiffen. They do some upgrade packages from the Tiffen version so you could buy the £5 one and upgrade to the latest version 4 for an additional $45. The plug in one for the NLE's is available as a $195 upgrade from the NLE version of the Tiffen but I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding that version, although eBay might throw one up occasionally. The standalone does batch processing so could be used in a dng workflow for video but it would be a bit painful. They do a fully functional 15 day trial though so its worth having a look and see if it does enough to be worth springing for the full version. And it does do a lot of very cool stuff aside from the filter emulation. http://www.digitalfilmtools.com/dft/index.php?tab=41 point

I'd be happy with your crappy old mirrorless... if your GH5 or A7III start cluttering up your place I'll let you store them at mine!! Charlies post got me thinking about this board and who is on here. I think it tends to be a place for a few situations: Contemplating upgrades Keeping up with technology Socialising I don't see a problem with any of these, as even for people who shoot all the time there are still these situations I don't think there should be less talk about gear, but I'd love if there was more talk about the artistic aspects of film-making as well. After all, once you buy a camera and learn the exposure triangle the rest is really working out what to point it at! ?1 point

Gervais on the Gunn situation. Right as always. Also see Humanity, on Netflix. It will be educational for quite a lot of people! Disney and even JK Rowling have no problem with Johnny Depp, who has been accused of worse things than making bad jokes or hugging in an office environment. None of them proven though, I might add. Do we really now have to go through our entire social media history dating back years and delete any jokes, for sake of our careers? Seems yes, we do, it's the new world we live in.1 point -
The difference between Nikkor AI and AI-S lenses seems to be primarily in the action of the rear aperture lever for auto-exposure. I think AI'd lenses are non-AI lenses that have been converted to AI, merely by changing the aperture ring. All of the lenses that you list are excellent, but the Nikkors have the longest flange-focal distance. Consequently, the Nikkors will work on more cameras, adapters and focal reducers. The speed of a Nikkor 50mm 1.4 could be helpful when shooting darkly lit dance performances, and you'll get an extra stop (and a full-frame look on your a6500) with the addition of a focal reducer. I have a non-AI Nikkor 50mm 1.4 and it has a lot of nice character.1 point

I don’t know, the facts are this... James Gunn made some off color jokes on Twitter 10 years ago. When Disney was forced to deal with the situation today, they chose his jokes and him weren’t right for their brand. Going forward, another production company may be fine with it, that is also their right. I don’t believe James Gunn is a pedophile. I believe he was trying way too hard to be edgy and now he has to deal with the consequences of his actions. I have a very early preorder on the Pocket 4k but what I still like about the FS700 w/ odyssey is the internal ND's, two proper XLR inputs, a great quality monitor, S35mm sensor, 4k 50p and even 4K 100p in burst (I'm in a PAL country). Yes, its a bigger/more cumbersome rig than the pocket4k, but then sometimes that's a benefit. I also shoot a fair bit on Red and that's no less cumbersome than the FS700 w/odyssey. I'm not going to pretend the FS700 is ergonomic but it depends what your use to I suppose. Also, I can't really see myself using the Pocket 4k in its basic form all that often anyway. I would need another monitor mounted to it as the non tilting built in one is unusable when using a cinesaddle or any position you can't see the screen straight on. I would also probably want a mattebox for ND's (not a fan of VariNds). Battery life May also be an issue on longer shoots and then I'd brobably want some sort of small cage with top handle for handling. Are these issues for everyone? Of course not, but for my use, the FS700 may still be the better camera of the two but I'll evaluate that when I have the Pocket 4k in hand. Some of the work I do uses the Sony F5 and f55 as an A Cam so the FS700 cuts in perfectly with them. While the c300 does shoot lovely images, it's frame rate limitations made it a non starter for the work I do. Please don't get on here making it sound like I'm bashing on any particular camera, I'm just outlining why one camera may be better for certain people. For me, the FS700 is still a perfectly great camera today just as the FS7, f5 and f55 are. The FS700 w/odyssey punches far far above its weight and judging it on its age or current second hand price is just wrong. I'm seeing FS700's w/ Odyssey's including 5+ batteries, 4x512GB CD SSD's, full cage etc going for $3500 AUD. I can't see the Pocket4k being any cheaper once I add a second monitor, batteries, the equivalent 4x500GB Cfast cards, ND's etc...but right now I can't be bothered doing the math. What I am looking forward to with the Pocket4k is the colour science and the compressed RAW options.1 point
-
The problem is if we just wave our hands and say "but it creates great images" then we could say the same about a BMPCC or even a GH2. Where does it end? Thus I try to be objective as well and look at their features/specs/value. Of course the C300 can still make nice images! And if a person handed one to me and told me to shoot with it then I'd happily do that. And heck, I'd even buy one if offered at the right price. (probably a sub US$1K price?) However at the current prices the C300mk1 has zero appeal to me, would I want *one* C300mk1 vs two FS700? Easy choice! Better than internal FS700?? Of course! But better than external 4K raw? Nope! Not as extensive HFR as the FS700 Exactly. The C500 body is more expensive and the whole set up with a recorder is more expensive as Atomos isn't as viable an option. If the total cost of ownership of a C500 with 4K was the same as a FS700 with 4K then I might maybe be able to overlook the negatives of the C500 and choose it over the FS700. However at the moment there is a massive price gulf in the difference between a C500 and a FS700 when you sum it up. Would probably go for a FS7 or F5 instead for only an extra grand ish more in total than a complete C500 4K package. I meant in terms of audible noise. You just can't record great usable sound with the C500 in 4K after a certain point in time. However there are DIY hack work arounds, but it still is a strike against the C500. Exactly. Are we talking AUD or USD? As if AUD that is less than 2x Pocket 4K cameras Plus add in external NDs, that will spread out the gap further. (ignoring the whole hassle factor.... plenty of reasons to prefer the camcorder/cinema form factor vs a DSLR/mirrorless/pocket approach)1 point

A lot of progress has been made on the EOS M in the last two days and it looks like they've been able to make the camera shoot in mv1080 mode using the full aps-c sensor (no crop) for the first time ever (as opposed to the mv720 mode that the camera was always stuck in). This means that the EOS M will now be as capable as the other digic 5 cameras.... so what I said before about anamorphic shooting changes completely - this will now be a great camera for anamorphic as it can record max 1736x1120 (3:2 aspect ratio) which I think uses the whole sensor height and width. Will do my first test soon - liveview preview isn't working fully yet though. Can't wait for the Viltrox speed booster to be released soon and shoot full frame raw video with this £100 camera! Here's the forum post and first footage: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9741.msg203530#msg2035301 point

@tupp very interesting videos, thanks for sharing! If it were simply possible to swap out the UHS-I SD card interface inside the EOS M for a UHS-II one, that would make higher resolution recording feasible. But I imagine the amount of coding required to make it work might make it very difficult. In any case I doubt you'd be able to sell and make any money from a hardware hack like this - unless you get permission from Canon! I spoke to a Canon rep at the media production show in London recently where they were showing off their cinema EOS cameras, and he was aware of the EOS M 2.5k hack and seemed totally positive about it even saying he'd like to try it himself. I showed him the hack in operation. He also said he hoped that magic lantern would be available for the M50 one day!1 point

I think that they tapped into the signal coming out of the A-to-D converter. Doing so is a little tricky as one must: find the part of the circuit to tap; bring that raw digital signal up to line level/voltage for a recorder; work with extremely miniaturized components. Over the last year, I have considered trying such a hardware hack with my EOSM, but the skills required for steps #1 and #3 are beyond me. Here are two videos showing the EOSM innards: Don't know if it would be feasible to start a business making such hardware mods on EOSMs, as I can only guess at the demand/quantities involved. However, such a hardware hack could work just as easily on the EOSM-5, EOSM-6 and EOSM-50 as it would on the original EOSM, which could transform these more recent models into raw, mirrorless monsters.1 point
