The shots above are not actually "blown out", so there's nothing to recover.  It's just that the highlights are mapped into the super-white regions in the debayered .dng.  But the data is intact, it just has to be brought down.  You'll see the same thing on the original Pocket.

exactly , these firts shots are just DNGs without metadata. Once you blow out the lights in the camera, there's no way back. (Zebra 100%)

Good luck with the noise with the old BMPCC, once graded.

provided DNG BMPCC was underexposed! And ,yes BMPCC has more noise in the shadows, but with the right exposure it is far better.

P.S. .....do not take it wrong, someone has to keep up with the great enthusiasm of BMP4K 😄

The Pocket 2K was exposed to the right, not underexposed at all.
The Pocket 4K was slightly overexposed, some slight clipping.

The Pocket 4K is way cleaner in the shadows but I guess once properly exposed the dynamic range between these two is pretty much the same but you'll get a cleaner image with way less moire and aliasing on the new Pocket.

So the Pocket 4K fares 11.6 stops by Cinema 5D's strict methodology, almost half a stop more than the old Pocket. That's pretty awesome.

Didn't expect that.. Yes, the shadows on the Pocket 4K are way cleaner (almost no FPN either) but it seems to clip earlier as well.
So basically if you're doing ETTR you can't go wrong and make use of some great DR actually, just brighten up the shadows in post.

I'd say that's the way to go with this camera, yes.

Where did this come from?  They tested the original Pocket tested at around 12.5, which was consistent with other third party results, and the P4K hasn't been tested at all.  Or has it?

I don't know why, but shots from the og pocket looks better vs some of the P4K stuff online and other current cameras

That's because there's a whole lot more of it. More people have (or had) it than the new one, and they've been using it for quite a few years longer.

I see it anyway, we can also get great pictures with the new pocket. But my old pocket keeps me going.

OT Pocket has 12,5 ,  it's about 1 stop more 🙂

According to their more strict tests (1/SNR=0.5, number in bold on the right) the OG pocket has 11.2 and P4K has 11.6. The pocket 4K has about half a stop more of dynamic range.

That looks excellent.

I thought I'd quote the post again right under to make people scroll through 6 huge images instead of 2.

Watch the video.  They rate the original BMPCC at 11.2 and the BMPCC 4K at 11.6.  They appear to be using the lower more conservative set of values (SNR=.5) in the chart reproduced above.

In any event, they state plainly that by their measurements, the P4K has more dynamic range.  This is consistent with what most shooters, including this one, have discovered.
