  1. Hi everyone, I thought I share my first Project I shot with my new Canon C200. I used Cinema Raw Light, mostly at 50fps. I used a lot of available light , I had only one LED Light Panel with me and relied completely on the cameras autofocus. I really wanted to try what I can do with minimal crew. Tell me what you think! I am happy to answer all questions about the camera and my experiences with it. Max

The other aspect to the GH5 that's more rarely discussed but very relevant if you use the camera for production, is when you shoot in Prores HQ in 10bit 4:2:2 at 800mbps to SSDs you now have the image of a serious production camera IMO...yes...you add the mass off Vmounts, a rig, and an external recorder, but on sticks you now have a camera that still weighs far less than the big boys, but delivering IQ for any use, with large focus and exposure tools, and yet, can be stripped down to a small package rather quickly, for shooting in a location where say discretion is advisable...I love the modular nature of what many consider Frankenstein rigs...

  6. I'm coming from 5dmk3 magic lantern. One of the main reasons i want to switch is just because the GH5/GH5s have professional exposure and focussing tools. The waveform alone feels like a godsent. It surely feels like a production cam to where i come from

  7. 5 years ago i made a photo of the ISS with my GH3. I made it in photo mode with a old russian 1.000mm catadioptric lens. It was incredibly difficult to find the tiny point in the viewfinder and mantain the hight speed across the sky. I made a few dozens shots and one was sharp. It was pure luck at 1/125s. This is a 100% pixels crop.

  8. "What the faster sensor DOES allow is faster video AF in contrast-detect mode!" Thank god for this, if true. For the past week I've had an E-M1 mark II and a GH5 sitting in my bedroom, and as beautiful as the GH5's 400mbps footage is, I ended up going with the Olympus as I just couldn't accept the GH5's focusing, and this was with firmware 2.1. For stills it was ok (though still not as confident as the E-M1), but for video it was laughable, even just back-button-focusing before I started the shot took a good few seconds to slowly get to where it needed to be. Yes, I usually shoot MF, but I still think a $2k camera should have usable AF.

  13. Gotta thank you all for everything i could learn since i`ve found and started reading this site and this forum. I'm finishing film school right now, barely finished editing my first Doc, and today is a great day for me. Since i've started reading Andrew`s posts on the blog and following the discussions on this forum i started to fall in love with anamorphics. They're pretty hard to find around here and i wanted a small lens, that could fit well in my G7. 1.5x is what i aimed for, as the 4K photo on the G7 only does 30p, and i really preffer the 24p look. After some months monitoring the biggest used gear website around here i've finally came across an YashicaScope 8mm. Converting the price to dollars, it costed me only 100$ and got no scratches, fungus, os dust. It`s crystal clear. Loved that thing and it weights so low it doesn't even make a difference. Unfortunatelly i couldn't buy a clamp yet, as they're non existent around here and doing imports this time of the year in my country is know your gear is gonna fall into a black hole to never be seen again, so all the tests i've done are with me holding the lens with my hand in front of the camera, no good for alignment. But i wanted to share them with you guys, as without everything i've read here along those years it simply wouldn't be happening right now and it is time in wich i could be helping other people, just as you all helped me along those years. I've tested the lens with the 14-42mm kit lens, as it was my only lens wich the frontal element was small enough so i could press the anamorphic against the lens without risking to scratch it. I could go as wide as 25mm without major vigneting problems (theres a slight vignete at 25mm, but if you crop from 2.66 to 2.39 it should be gone). It is double focus and i'm still trying to figure out how to do it right, but as it is just a 1.5x lens the focus peaking still worked well enough on most of my shots and it's been easier than i thought it would be, with a clamp it should be better, as i won't have to be holding the lens with my hand. It seemed sharper than i thought it would be based on the few tests i could find on youtube. Here are some frame grabs. First one is 25mm, so you guys can see the slight vignetting. Shots 2, 3 and 4 are at 35mm, it seemed to me a good spot to shot, as it got no vignetting at all. The last image is at 42mm, the end of my zoom. I've shot all the images on f/5.6. Tried to bring my 85mm f/1.8 with speedbooster to test, but its frontal element was to big and the light leaking made the image a total mess. I did just some quick grade using filmconvert and lumetri. Hope you guys like them and sorry about my english, writing and speaking aren't things i fully domain.

  14. I am buying a SmallHD Focus myself. I want a 5" small and light, but other monitors ain't very bright on sunny days (and we got a lot of those here!), so I assume this one for a very good company will be sufficient. Another good, cheaper one, is the Ikan 5" 1080p (Focus is 720p), that accepts 4K and has touch screen functionalities too, and is like 299$ in US, but it seems flimsy. I have mixed feelings about monitors/recorders. I would take the monitor for monitoring, but I am not very experienced with those. The Blackmagic 5" seems a worst option than the Focus, so I would get the SmallHD.

  15. Everyone is focusing on the red buttons, but look at these hard angles on the left rear of the camera. These lines do not conform to any current Panasonic camera. Not GH5 or G9. And the angles are no optical illusion, as they are clearly present in both images, even though the pictures are taken at different angles. It’s clearly a brand new model, not merely software.

  16. Yeah maybe with the new sensor you’ll be able to shoot VLog at ISO 100... which could be the significance of the close up robot sky shot that Luke shared. Which will also probably mean that you will be able to bake in LUTS.

  17. That’s true and I guess VLog will be free instead of an add on. Since we’re speculating, I would love for Panasonic to release a GH5b that only offers 10bit 1080p 200mbps all-i up to 72fps, and IBIS. I don’t need VLog or any AF, I’ll take the waveform and the shutter angle feature all in a metal body the size of the G85. Make it a 12MP sensor for $1000 to $1200 and I’m a buyer. I assume I’ll see a Canon Rebel with 4K before I’ll see that camera... so probably never. And I guess I wouldn’t mind some anamorphic too. May as well.

  18. Very interesting info about the organic sensor here. I didn't realize it would have that sort of capability. Short of that though, I do think an electronically-charged, internal ND would be awesome in this little camera. For me that is the last step needed for a GH camera to be considered a full feature video camera, at least as such could be defined today. I do agree that a electronic shutter is not without downsides for still shooting, but this camera is {rumored} to be *very* video-centric. I believe many video shooters would gladly trade a mechanical shutter for internal ND... if this were the actual situation. We'll see soon. I think the new sensor {rumor} will open up a few new possibilities: -Better low light performance -Better color rendition -Better DR? -Faster sensor readout for higher fps -and maybe even elimination of rolling shutter

  19. It would be a heck of a trumpingly tremendeous:) campaign to have Casey Neistat show off their new revolutionary AF of this new camera. The perfect vlogging camera, all these vlogging vips of the utubs universe have been bragging about. People would go nuts and buy it for 2799, just for the best in class AF, Casey Neistat proven. It will be a great time to buy used GH5 cameras very soon.:)

  20. I can say, several pieces of software in chain. However, I will be coding something that will fine tune the process, and simplify it to one. Thank you austinchimp. I hear you about the luts; I bought many of the Alexa-like luts in my quest. Support for Hybrid Log-Gamma was just added, and something *may be released next year that will be more budget and hobbyist oriented. No one will pay more for the conversion to be a reality than me. It was a huge savings for me though, because the used Alexa package that I almost bought last year was over $20K for everything that I needed to get it to work (and the GH5 moves a lot better) I am preparing a series of Gif comparisons to demonstrate the difference between native GH5 color and the unmodified main GHa conversions.   22. That would be a step in the wrong direction from my point of view. The organic sensor that Panasonic has been developing has the ability to selectively change the sensitivity of individual pixels. This is a much better approach than merely cutting down light for the entire sensor by using an ND filter. I would like to see some real innovation. I have NDs, as do I would wager most of the GH5 owners here. The assumption seems to be inferred that removing the mechanical shutter has no downsides. Well if the Sony A9 and A7RIII are examples, I can tell you that many have reported rolling shutter problems when using electronic shutter in place of mechanical. Also those cameras seem to suffer from defocus issues when using electronic shutter.

  23. This looks great and your demo footage is beautiful. I would be sending you my money right now but it's WAAAAAYYY too expensive for a lut. I think many of us have been burned before with Luts promising to transform this, or fix this, or make our lives easier, and the truth is I've never found any of them to completely live up to their promise, so it's hard to splurge this much money. If it were 50% cheaper I would try it out and reward you for what has obviously been a lot of work, but this is just too much right now without any way to test it myself on any footage. If there were more demonstrations on other people's footage in a variety of different circumstances then I might be persuaded. Your results do look fantastic though.

  25. GH5s - as in s35? JVC has already done a s35 sensor with a m43 mount - that's assuming the helicopter pic is the new camera (and not just a button add-on to a GH5 to make hitting rec easier) since it sporting what looks like the 8-18mm lens. I can't take credit for that one as it was mentioned earlier in one of these threads. Buuuuut Panasonic could be looking at recouping costs of developing that sensor by placing it in a hybrid body. Though the $2500 price speculation seems unlikely if that were the case. With a larger sensor you get more DR and the much loved multi aspect possibilities. What if the GH5s had the Varicam LT sensor and came in at say ... $4999? A C1/200/FS5 killa? Fun to speculate.

  26. Yes, you must underexpose. The moon has to be exposed as daylight. 1/125 f11 at ISO 100 or equivalents. Jupiter and other planets reflects lower light, but the exposure can be 1/60 or 1/30 aprox.

    Z Camera E1 for $200

    The comparison that is relevant is the video I posted above using the GH4 and the Z with the same lens under dim, not low light. The Z colors are more accurate and the shots are less noisy. Comment on that, especially after downloading the original I uploaded. I agree that the sensor is not the only thing that counts, obviously. And i am not arguing the Z is the better camera, but the comparison video suggests at a minium no worse image for the Z, if not better.

    Thanks Kaylee! It is a legacy piece for me, that I'd been meaning to do since before the GH5. I wanted to upstage the early work, and do something spectacular Thanks Mercer - it was a hacked GH2, set to Smooth -2. I also used a Speedbooster with Nikkor Series E lenses.

  38. Care to elaborate on the “well, yes and no?” Sometimes the issues can be seen as a liberation instead of a limitation. As proven dozens of times, by the many videos floating around, there isn’t a camera on the market incapable of creating amazing imagery in the right hands or circumstances, some tools just make it a lot easier. But there is something exciting about taking the bare minimum and working around its limitations... not that the X-T2 is the bare minimum, it’s obviously a professional piece of equipment. If only it had IBIS.

  39. There is surprisingly little talk about GH5. The new HLG profile makes it very interesting without paying additional cost of vlog-L. Most users have not figured it yet. HLG also helps with noise issues of GH5. The HDR is also difficult subject and makes too nervous conversations and confusions.

Andrew, the problem with a much larger sensor than the tiny video chips of yore is that you have to use a significant zoom lens on the camera (or a long FL prime) to couple to the scope eyepiece/TC train. I've tried my GH4 w/ the compact Panny 14-140, but just too bulky, with a relatively small circular image shown, or no focus-able image all. My next iteration was the Sony HC1 FHD camcorder, but never found suitable astronomic "seeing" to warrant the time and effort of setup with the 9.25" f/10 scope. What I have done with it is total solar eclipse recording of solar flares and detached prominences, but with a very compact and excellent 4" 1000mm f/10 reflex scope w/ tube length only 8" using an eyepiece coupled to the Sony lens, but no TC. First pic below with the VGA res. TRV-900 of the striking detached prominence - Africa '01; the second with the FHD Sony of the "hedgerow prominences" I've not seen imaged in this detail - Turkey '06. For the recent eclipse I viewed and imaged from Madras, Oregon, I used my GH5, Canon 100-400-II w/ 2X TC shooting 4K in ETC crop mode (2.7X crop factor), plus 2X dig zoom or this to 1080p res and 5.4X factor = 4320mm EFL. Tech. screwups on my part nixed any views of the pretty unimpressive flares at this mag.

Here's a sort of uber-imaging setup with a 9.25" aperture/2350mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegraine compound scope with an afocal imaging setup about 15 years ago: Sony TRV-900 3-CCD VHF camcorder with full man. controls, SS down to 1/2 sec connected to a telescope eyepiece (this is the "afocal" setup) which is connected to a 3X TC (Barlow lens in astro lingo). The Jupiter images filled about 2/3 frame height with the Sony at about 10X zoom. This method makes finding the object pretty easy zoomed out, works well in spite of the huge # of optical elements involved, and zoomed-in gives enormous mag. - maybe ~ 20-25 meters EFL @ f/100? The film clips were processed in Registax, which selected the sharpest (due to brief reductions in atmospheric turbulence), stacked 400-600, which accentuated common detail features, than a complex multistage "wavelet" sharpening routine. The first Jupiter image was from the steadiest "seeing" conditions I've ever had - in the Florida Panhandle. The Mars image at it's historic closest approach in 9/3/03, from southern Mexico.

  42. Ok, I’m leaning towards a new camera as opposed to firmware. A second image has emerged that shows a red ring around the dial of the camera that Casey Neistat is using in the helicopter video. This would seem to confirm the earlier analysis of the frame grab from the video posted by @Neumann Films that seemed to show a red ring on the right dial. Since this red ring is Panasonics new design language to signify top tier cameras in the Lumix lineup this it stands to reason they would use it on this more expensive model. Also there is another image of the front of the camera that seems to show s red letter below the model designation. So why did the GH5 not get a red ring? Will future GH5 get the red ring?

  47. I think it compares very favorably to the E-M1mkii. At least in paper it offers better stabilization (6.5 stops even with unstabilized lenses) and it has a far better EVF. I find the top LCD very useful in general, one of the few things that I really miss with mirrorless cameras. The only real disadvantage that it might have is the lack of PDAF, but that remains to be tested of how much difference there is in tracking. I also believe the larger size is an advantage for sports photographers. Coupled with the new 200mm f/2.8 this will be a success in the market that e-m1mkii dominates. And as a bonus you get 4K 60p and far better audio preamps.

  49. Bro. I have found the best profile! I've shared it with so many people because they all want it it's so good. it's got a very "Canon" look to it and it grades so nicely. It really adds a ton of depth to the image that lacks in the normal Sony profiles. It's all about that "color depth". THE SONY PROFILE Black Level: 0 (it's disabled in s-log2 anyway) Gamma: S-log2 Black Gamma: Range- Narrow, Level -7 Knee: auto Color Mode: sgamut3.cine Saturation: +32 Color Phase: -2 (this is for a7sII and a6300, for original a7s use -5) Color Depth: +6 (all of them) Detail: -6 Expose 1.5 to 2 stops over. You may need to dial the green tint out in the white balance shift. Let me know how you like it. I found this profile somewhere on dvxuser and have fallen in love with it. Now all my friends shoot on it

  50. @Greg Block Thanks for sharing the image of your rig! I'm thinking about getting a 5" or 7" monitor myself. I'm having a hard time deciding between VS-2 Fine HD, Ikan DH5e or DH7... I didn't think of the HDMI cable positioning as a problem as it's on the left side on my GH4. Here's how my rig could look when I decide which monitor to get. That's a 5" smartphone on top mounted with Shoulder Pod S1 and a ballhead screwed on to a SmallRig handle. I need the handle on the GX85 because of the HDMI is on the left but on the GH4 I won't need it so it can actually be an even smaller setup.
