  1. When this thing was announced it totally blew my mind. And I have been wanting one ever since the first time I read about it. If you don’t know what this is all about just think of it as a Speedbooster. But instead of turning an APS-C into Full Frame it turns a Full Frame into a Medium Format Camera. And as you may know, medium format in digital is pricy to say the least. I will have more info and go deeper into this later on, this is just my first impressions. Opened the box literally just a few hours ago. Its very sturdy and all metal. It balances well after putting on a hefty lens. The lens I tested tonight was a 80mm f4 Macro. I have others but wanted to see some closeups to check sharpness. Its much sharper than I expected. Sharp enough I guess... Also Ive seen no excessive vignette. Any vignette in the samples are added in post. I also added grain. Portrait of GP Closeup Selfie Closest Focus With vignette and grain. Without vignette, still grain.

  2. I use two vintage 1959 mk 1 eyeballs and a (faulty) brain. Why what do you use?

  3. I think this scene has too much added contrast. I hope TCS can make the raw footage available, so we can actually see what the camera can do / has done.

  4. Well I use a HP ZR30w. 30" IPS screen. It is a 2K monitor. I am too old to use a 4k one. It was over 1200 bucks back in the day. First great monitor I ever had that was big money, so nothing similar to compare too. But it was a unbelievable upgrade to what I had I can tell you that. It was a pretty good 1080p Nec monitor at the time. And I had cataract surgery a few years ago, so I might see stuff better than some people in their late 40's 50's. It is a Incredible difference after they do it. Especially colors.

  5. I was sure the price of NX stuff would tank completely by now... I hunted down a perfect NX 50-150 (no box) for $800 about a month ago... and was kicking myself thinking by now on the eve of the "ALL MIGHTY" GH5 it would be like $700-$650 today... But nope the price of NX gear is Spiking again!? I could sell for a $150-$250+ profit right now... Crazy... I got my NX-1 body used from BH photo over a year and a half ago and I could sell it for the same or a little more... If anybody is in a NX dumping/Selling mood the time is now... seems to be a sellers market.... may be the last peak before it falls of a cliff... Im still on the fence... Looking at Blackmagic Cameras with rose colored glasses at the moment. I need to watch this every day till it becomes my mantra. (this only applies if your not losing gigs because you don't have the right gear)

  6. If you cant tell, I'll take your F65. Who wants that heavy, expensive old thing anyway. In trade, I'll take you out to Walmart and let ya pick out whatever camera ya want and then I'll buy ya dinner at Applebees.

  7. Personally, I can't stand OS X. I've never understood why most creatives seem to prefer it as an operating system. Why?! Granted, I grew up using Windows and worked in IT for a couple years, so I'd venture to guess I'm probably more of a power-user than the average, everyday person, but still, just in things like ease-of-use, customization, more advanced program management and multi-tasking, I'd take windows every time, hands down. In fact, the only reason I can possibly think of using an apple computer or their OS -- ever -- is if you're a fcpx user, since hackintosh is such a pain to get reliably running. Maybe there is some special secret to loving OS X, but if there is, I certainly haven't discovered it yet.

  8. As a user of the a6300 I have to vote against that camera if you can't afford multiple. The image is great and the lackluster usability can be worked around but the overheating is real. Just had it again today shooting in a moderately warm kitchen. If you use an external field monitor, the camera doesn't go to sleep and will overheat before you manage to empty a single battery. I wish Sony would bring a professional APS-C camera but I don't think that will happen. Semi regretting getting native lenses right now after missing a shot today, wish I would have gone for the BMMCC (but then I'd probably regret moire right now).

  9. Here are some screen grabs. I did not bother to cut it to cinemascope, you get the feel. Note the bokeh on the last picture. All shot with Sigma 18-35, Lens Turbo 0,72x and GH4. I tried to cut a vertical line in to the front filter but it did not work as expected, than I tried to sandpaper it, but it was visible on this short focal length. I thought that faking anamorphic will be easier, but it is not

  10. Though question since I don't agree with your assessment of the advantages of Medium Format. I still shoot film, both medium format and full frame (small picture). And I definitely don't use medium format to get faster films. If anything I use the opposite. Thats why I kickstarter backed the modified Kodak Vison 50D from Cinestill. A 56mm is till going to be a 56mm and nothing else. And if one likes the look of a 100mm one needs to use a 100mm. The DOF is identical on all formats but on the medium format you get more in the frame. A good example is when I use a 17mm on APS-C. Its great for street photography with the deep DOF of a 17mm (on any format). But I can fill the frame with a person without going as close as I would have had to do with FF. More like the distance of a 35mm on FF. The problem is if I try to shoot a closeup of someone, then I dont get a look of a 35mm at all. The person is all distorted with a huge head. This is why medium and large format is nice and can't be simulated with equivalent lenses. But I will test all this and this discussion is a never ending story so lets leave it for now. If one only care about SDOF and firmly believe that a focal length can be changed with different sensor sizes. Then he/she can just settle with a 1" sensor like the RX100. Because with the "equivalent" theory thats just as good as FF, MF or large format. No difference at all. But if one can see a difference between for example m4/3 and FF. Then he/she will see the same advantages and disadvantages between FF and MF. And of course MF and LF.

  11. Yes, the youtube click bait vultures are all over the place. That is Martin Wallgren's video. He uploaded that to Vimeo a little over 3 weeks ago, he also had another GH5 video titled ( Winters Grip ) that was linked here a week or so ago. Who ever it was that re-posted Martins video used every GH5 tag one could think of for a stolen video. I guess people have decided to start stealing content to get views.

  12. I made one from black cardboard and used a fishing line. Obviously, the oval shape could be nicer, but at least I know that this anafake does not worth 50 bucks. You get the fishing line in your bokeh, the lights will be clearly divided in to two and the "waterfall bokeh" will have a fishing line like horizontal line. You can get rid of this by using a thiner line, but it will kill the flares. Check the cinemorphs characteristics, it's the same, anyway, the cardboard will definatelywork with your speedbooster

  13. What lens do you have in mind? I had a Moller 19/1.5x and the AF worked flawlessly on the 70D.

  14. Of course, that's good for interviews as well. Allows a better report and interaction with the subject. So often film making is not about the visuals.

  15. Saw that footage weeks ago - it looks like it has been stolen, borrowed, doctored, changed. Just check the guy's YouTube description for that video. Anybody doing that is just looking for short term views. Utterly ridiculous.

  16. @tupp in India(I guess) and "strange" markets (like mine) around the world, working "under budget" is the normal, you do not try to bring it under budget, you are seriously under budget and try to survive in a continuous "under-budgeting" market!

  17. I 2nd this! @Mattias Burling Also, could you do a DOF "equivalence" test between this set-up and your Digi-Bolex with a prime lens? Thanks for showing these photos. They look spectacular!

  19. Yes it does look nice indeed. Though, there is a huge variability in quality between all these low light samples. Can't really figure out why. Maybe the 4:3 anamorphic mode? I want to trust this sample of course but it would be great if he threw a face in there as well

  20. Yup. As a doc filmmaker, I could work with that. ;-) 10KISO and a f.095 lens? That's handy for dark scenes. I might actually be able to make a film or something now!

  21. They sell versions for both Leica and Sony. The lens mounts so far if Im not mistaken is Hasselblad, Pentax 645, Pentax 67 and Mamiya 645.

  22. Yes definitely the result of grading. You can see the difference at 11:42 with the LUT applied. It was by choice, but I also believe the should ease a bit the contrast on the shadows. Pretty funny that he went in all the trouble not to crush the blacks and then they used an LUT that crushed everything up to midtones Yes but still very good. Maybe one of the best skintones out of GH5 that I have seen.

  23. I've never really been interested in Dual ISO because of the aliasing and moire.

  24. Very impressive. The acting was so good that I forgot to look for any issues with the camera. I guess that if the story is good enough, the vast majority of people will not care one jot for anything else.

  25. yes, this is exactly the wrong settings, high -3 (without iDynamic) with the adjusted contrast -5 !! and very inconvenient LED lighting the room with a narrow light spectrum radiation then everyone look as waxy :-) -------- This printscreen 1080p is setting: natural +1,-5,-5,-2 , iDynamic standard ,WB auto ISO 1600 skin tone is perfect

  26. I use a GenusTech variable ND. Get the f-stop you want, and then make stronger or lighter depending on what you want your exposure to be. For me, that's always either +1.7 or +2.0 on the Sony A7SII with SLOG2. Unfortunately, it's not quite enough on a very sunny day with a really wide aperture. I wish it went to 10 stops of ND, but oh well.

  27. Exactly.... I dont really care how they do it, if it looks good, it looks good. Good IS, amazing AF and 1080p raw would be amazing... at this price point.

  28. To be fair, images that I have shot look worlds apart on my mid 2011 iMac, Note 4, late 2015 5k iMac, 37" LG television, the wife's Galaxy and the kids' iPads. I much prefer the originals that existed before I hit the record button - never over saturated, over sharpened, perfectly exposed, no chromatic aberration. I just wish we could reteieve the data directly from our memories. Without compression artifacts, of course. The closest we get to that is when we replay those images in dreams.

  36. Thank you for your interest. actually the 30mm electric motor is powerful enough, I use it with anamorphot lens that weighs over 300 grams without problems, but more than 600 grams could start giving problems, which is why I want to build a system with guides in linear bearings, for reduce friction and facilitate sliding of the lens. No, NXL-A is the best full frame Canon lens control system for directors and film makers who shoot with Samsung nx1 camera. It also keeps them alive yet these cameras ... It will be ready in about two weeks and I'll build a dumb NXL version with the predisposition for the hardware and an already modified version.

  37. Buy a used 1DC. Has the best image of any camera in that price range I've ever used. https://www.ebay.com/itm/142284537672

  38. What I can do is an AF Adapter like Techart Pro but with opening control function and stabilizer for Canon EF lenses. Autofocus S Samsung lenses in M mode (for instance the one with the center pane), is not much different as speed and accuracy than 30mm lens. With Canon lens aperture control would be directly from the camera (without external control). You can not have conversion data from Samsung camera in Canon lenses. This would involve major compatibility problems, errors and continuous crash. This system is 100% safe, with 100% lenses compatibility, including M42 and old manual lenses. Only fault, you can not merge with NXL due to the bulkiness of the motherboard. you have other questions?

  39. There are so many good cameras with great images on all sides of the price spectrum... but if I had to choose based upon your criteria at 3000 bucks... I would say either a BlackMagic camera or a C100ii. Now if you were to say $1500, I would say the a6500. At 1000, BMPCC. At 800, the G80/85. 500... D5500.

  40. Probably a Canon of some description. Never used one but their images are the best I have seen for flattering people - and it is people that I tend to film more than, say, aardvarks or buildings.

  41. As I understand the Samsung cameras are extremely sought after right now including their hardware that is why prices keep rising, because they are becoming rarer and rarer and its mostly because of this forum right now and the great guys behind the bitrate hack and Luca's adapter and work in progress smart adapter. Not to mention Samsung NX1 and NX500 imao are still amazing cameras and they are cheap well used to be anyway. Its a good sign because now that dirty "&()!"%)¤ acting president of Samsung aka Son of Samsung's actual president, is in jail and that means there will be a brighter future for Samsung now that the corrupt bastards are removed.

  42. Get a 70D then Already has DPAF and Magic Lantern raw. As of nearly 2 years ago. http://www.eoshd.com/2015/04/magic-lantern-now-working-on-canon-70d-both-versions/ I'd rather they cracked the EOS M5 or M6 anyway, as the mirrorless form factor is better suited to video.

  43. To be clear, I am not trying dissuade you from getting a GH5 and native lenses. One can do a lot with that camera, but the easiest look will be a little clinical. If you are a good colorist, you can make any camera look "filmic" or "cinematic." If you're looking for an easier path to that, then get a BlackMagic Camera and shoot in Raw or ProRes. If you're looking for great AF and nice skin tones go with a Canon. If you want 4K, go with a Mk iv. If you want a more cinematic look go with a C100 mkii. Take a look at Kendy Ty's videos on Vimeo and see what he did with an old Canon DSLR... The important thing is to do your research, know your abilities and know how much time you're willing to put into the final product. That is all... good luck!!!

  45. It isn't something you say, it's something you do; if you are not sure what you are bringing to a production, maybe you are not ready for such a prominent role, yet. To be exposed on a big set it can be the worst thing ever happen in your life! Start humble, and step by step build your arsenal (skills, knowledge, experience). Maybe you should ask to these Bollywood producers if they have a smaller part for you on a big production, or a bigger part on a smaller production. There are sets with tens, or even hundreds of people, in front and behind the camera, you have to be ready to solve swiftly and adequate any problem arise and always perform at maximum level.

  47. Tell them that you have the expertise to fulfill the director's vision and that you have extensive experience in using the language of the camera to tell the story. Of course, you must be able to follow through from such statements, and it certainly helps to have a reel that demonstrates such ability.

  48. Well you should have a certain style to add to the overall look, and hopefully know the cameras being used. Not going to be as good as the operators, but knowledgeable about their strength and weakness. Be a leader, or things go down hill quick. Hopefully you get paid because you have a needed skill, you are good at it, and you are quick to see what the writer, producer has in mind. And be better than the last guy he had or he would still have him or her LoL. You are the person that makes it happen, the scrape goat if not. Ain't for the weak at heart. Best have some damn thick skin. Operators will throw you under the bus if they smell blood!! And every grip you have will bother the shit out of you. Other than that it is a very rewarding job. Basiclly you have to be honest about your skills with the head person, and just make shit happen. Nobody knows it all. Could be a ton of FX on it, not many people great at shooting that. Green Screen you have to have a hell of a imagination to do that well. And give women actors a Lot of Pee breaks. They will love you for it.
