  1. Well, I haven't posted on EOSHD for ages, but when I saw this competition I thought that sounds fun. I dropped by on Bexhill-on-Sea on the South Coast yesterday on my way to somewhere else, and shot this footage over an hour or two. No grading, straight out of camera. Manual settings (although fairly limited choice that's all I'll say). Edited on my laptop this evening. I bought the used camera on ebay for £133. I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for Andrew. As long as I don't come last.

  3. The Osmo Pocket is also an epic achievement, just a totally different thing. I still would encourage a thread about it. Might start one myself. The image comes off very well in the Japanese video that's for sure.

  4. I got quite nostalgic there seeing those vintage cars as I regularly went on Sunday trips to the beach in one of those as a child. Sadly, it was the Ford Anglia and not the E Type Jag ! Got to admire a man with the self assurance to still be able to dole out a suspicious "what on earth are you up to?" look at someone else when he's the one casually taking his Dalek for a walk.

  5. Judging by the discounts and cash back incentives on virtually all of the brands, I don't think any of them are having a particularly bumper time sales wise. The problem for Nikon is that the L mount is building momentum through the upgrade of the S1, the announcement of the FP, the availability of the new Sigma lenses, the release of the S1H, the upcoming Sigma FF Foveon announcement and I suspect the new Leica SL isn't far off being announced now either. None of that makes the Z6 a bad camera of course but Nikon need to wrestle some of that momentum back and a statement on when the upgrade is actually going to happen would be a start. There's probably never been a better time NOT to buy a full frame camera though as within a few months Sony might be along with something that could blow everything out of the water, the Sigma FP might just be the full frame version of the original Pocket Cinema camera or the S1H might tick every box of being a full frame GH5s, or... if none of those things come to pass then the deflating prices of the S1 and Z6 etc will have no doubt continued anyway and they will become fantastic bargains, particularly used.

Wide Angle lenses rule in Cinema. Pretty good video about their usage.

  8. The hardware is pretty robust, the software is only so-so, Lumafusion lacks color wheels and scopes among other things. Its a fine editor, its a poor color solution and there's really noting else in iOS at the moment. For fast turnaround stuff with just basic shadow/highlight adjustments and a LUT I really like it though. As far as being on topic, the footage is really nice, I actually tinkered with it on my XS Max in Lumafusion. If the a7s3 wasn't on the horizon I'd probably shoot from Sony and get the S1 along with the new Sigma lenses, its a cracking camera. Editing 10-bit on a phone, good times. Chris

Product segmentation is unavoidable. Sony really isn't that bad. Unlocked FS5 with a recorder can do up to 240fps RAW 4K which is pretty wild. A7III is what imo sent A7S3 back to the drawing boards. Codec wise yeah I wouldn't dream. XDCam managers won't let an A7 line get 10-bit XAVC-I. A7S3 will have a crazy sensor that'll choke everyone, 6K/8K support and a killer new body design with a flip out screen. That is my prediction. Getting back to the FS7, thanks to those for suggesting that Venice LUT. It's an excellent starting point for SLog3:

  11. Image quality is definitely above average for the size. I can see quite a few uses for one. Ages ago, back in 2015 when I still lived in Berlin, I took the original OSMO out for a ride and had a hoot with it. Seems to have come a long way since then. https://www.eoshd.com/2015/12/my-dji-osmo-fairground-shoot-plus-a-mini-review/ No idea what the bigger, newer OSMOs are like but the small Pocket seems to be a lot more popular. So called source is talking about the production costs / R&D expense of making the camera, not the market pricing of it. Then again I wouldn't expect a rumours site to let the truth get in the way of a good headline.

  13. I've got one and I have to say its pretty nice. I don't have a fancy phone so it acts in lieu of that for holiday stuff and although the video is the main story, the quality of the stills are actually quite good. One complaint I have with it is that it seems to have a habit of reverting its settings out of the Pro mode which is a pain in the arse. I never use it with a phone so maybe that has something to do with it in terms of sync or something but its intermittent. I've just got some magnetic ND filters for it as it definitely becomes a bit too camcordery in bright light. The hyperlapse stuff is fun and the stabilisation is good in terms of being a tripod substitute and some slider type moves but walking with it is definitely going to give you some bumping unless you are disciplined in doing the silly walk. As I use it on holiday, the fact I'm wearing shorts is enough to make me look ridiculous without doing that as well. It struggles a lot in quite low light of course but these grabs are from footage I did in less than broad light and its does an alright enough job for what I'm using it for, especially considering the convenience factor and the tricks it can do. 1

I agree with your post 100%. Is the Sony Venice relevant and the future? If so how does the glass issue come into play? The A7SIII seems to be painted in the corner.

  20. Indeed, it's Apple's to Watermelons sort of comparo, but no worse than GH5 vs Arri Alexa Mini. The Fuji is an epic achievement. But strangely enough we are apparently living in the time of epic achievements. Can't wait to see what Sony annonces tomorrow ??

I don't know. When a Full frame camera comes out that does what the Pocket 4k does there won't be much a place for APSC and M43 anymore. One of the reasons I haven't got a full frame camera is none of them are where they need to be yet. The Panasonic S1 comes close but auto focus isn't there. Lenses are also way too expensive to make it worth it to switch.

  22. Now we're talking ! I didn't realise you wanted the precision option Simplest would probably be a velcro cable tie behind the clip on the transmitter to strap it to the mic then. Old minds think alike

  23. @webrunner5 the Osmo Pocket is great for what it is, but when viewed on a large screen with HDR the footage will definitely fall short of the GFX-100. I have the Pocket and the Action. I think the Action is even better than the Pocket as it has a HDR mode. But neither shoots as clean as any of my hybrids or dedicated cinema cameras. Where the Pocket and Action shine is in convenience. These days I almost always have one or the other on me. Also, real HDR is game changing and the Action has this. I am constantly annoyed that the Action can capture shadow detail while retaining bright highlights, while my larger cameras struggle, and usually warrant a compromise in post. The Sigma fp is the first hybrid that I’m aware of that sports this feature. I’m going to disagree. While the Fuji is more capable in many ways the Osmo is easily more versatile.

  24. Nope, going to continue defending the cutting edge Fuji in light of this new threat posed by the Osmo with it's smartphone sensor. It's just a fact that the Fuji can do a lot more. Not really controversial although facts in 2019 do seem to be. People rejecting them left right and centre. Camera movement versus quality of a locked down shot is a different topic and applies to all sorts of kit. There are not many cameras that float like an airborne slider, such as the Osmo is able to do, but comparing it to medium format just denies all sorts of technical and lens related FACTS

  25. My favorite stand ... just add holder and mic: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OrbitalPlate--triad-orbit-io-with-wallplate-desktop-mount Fast disconnect and very robust ... looks good enough that does not need to be hidden.

  26. So we are comparing 1/2.3" sensor to medium format now? The Osmo Pocket is a very cool little tool but we all know there is a massive difference in the look.

Same reason Magic Lantern also offer 8bit and 10bit raw... Reduces file size and reduces cost of media as it doesn't need such fast cards. It's a form of compression basically. Oh yes, it took 7 years for camera industry to deliver what Magic Lantern achieved on 2012 hardware Well done camera industry. Give them another few months and they will even do playback in-camera!! And not in monochrome only! I've wanted a small, affordable, uncompressed raw video shooting full frame camera forever.

The Sony Venice Is a FF Cine Camera. And s35 is going to be around longer than you think. Too many lenses for them, and not enough FF Cine lenses, let alone will you be able to afford them.. So I don't think it will hurt Cine sales no matter what they come out with. And I don't think Sony gives to much of a crap about Consumer APSC cameras down the road anymore. Probably one of the announcements next week will be a cheap FF camera to compete with the Canon RS. Nobody is going to buy a APSC camera for 50 dollars less than you can buy a FF one. There will be 800 dollar FF cameras or less down the road. Even Canon is probably going to have to give up on their cheap APSC cameras. Smartphones are now eating into them. And the M50 is doing well. No reason for them anymore. https://pro.sony/ue_US/products/digital-cinema-cameras/venice

  30. I just updated to Resolve 16 beta and the issue seems to be fixed. All Fujifilm files including HLG are interpreted with the correct matrix. The changelog mentions Fujifilm files but the fix seems to be general, it's seems that the matrix coefficients tag is now respected. The latest Premiere still has issues though.

  39. Thanks for the footage Andrew. The V-Log, 10-bit update definitely looks awesome. Seeing different shots both under and overexposed is very helpful as well - seems that the V-Log and the S1 in general has plenty of space to grade and bring down highlights or bring up shadows. Love this shot which I took down more than full stop (-1.2 in Lumetri), added the Eterna LUT and some contrast and tons of details in the highlights. Held up beautifully and looks great.

  43. yes ! I'm really no expert, but I would be surprised that Panasonic offer such an upgrade with no substantial benefits on dynamic range, while this particular point is advertised as a "plus" of the upgrade (I also try not be too naive with marketing though ? )

  44. Yes I am. And no the look is not. This is 2019, not 1999. We are not comparing SD to 8K. We are looking at 4K on each. And I would imagine the Vast majority of people would pick the Osmo, and a lot has to do with every shot Not being locked off like the Fuji is. Pretty boring ass footage in my view. The days of stuck up ass Leica, MF cameras are over. The GH5 proves that. The gap has narrowed so far in the last few years it is mind blowing. For video the Fuji is a waste of money and time. For Photos sure, but we Ain't talking about that. I don't understand why I am an old turd willing to experiment and explore, and a lot of younger people are just stuck in the past. What Nostalgia, Oh I missed the boat thing? They are just tools, you aren't married to them. Use every freaking thing out there. These new things are a gift from heaven compared to what I grew up with.
