  1. The results are in. Some are a little funny, others kinda expected but still interesting. When I counted the first time a few days ago the funny part was that J wasn't to far behind I. But I didn't expect this. (BTW, this morning J was still in the lead between the two.)

    Lenses

I have had a LOT of prime lenses in the range 85-150 as well as many old zooms. I would strongly suggest you save jut a little for a more recent lens in that range (some of them are getting old too but will hold up for year to come). Something like a Canon EF 85 1.8 or EF 100 f2 (I have not had the 85 but loved the EF 100). The 100 can be found for a couple of hundred dollars and I well worth it and Is not huge. I was spoilt by the Sony FE 85 1.8 which is about the biggest bargain going in photography (though still not dirt cheap) as it Is relatively small and light while being as good as many more expensive lenses. The EF 85 1.8 still seems quite good though and there is a Chinese knock off that is even cheaper (there is one for the 100 f2 as well. I also loved the EF 135 f2 L but that is a bit larger and heavier (but a very nice lens if you can afford it. I do still have a FD 85 1.2 L and that IS pretty heavy and large (for an 85) as well as being a bit expensive still (has come down in price a bit in the last few years now that there are many more 85s available in many mounts and even the MF Mitakon 1.2's. I had to sell the EF 135 f2 L and EF 100 f2 and FE 85 1.8 (wish I hadn't) but I do not have a camera to use them on now. I have kept a sigma 150 2.8 APO macro that I had at the same time as the 135 and when deciding which to keep, I thought the Sigma was a bit more versatile while being as good (an ok middle distance tele, a great portrait lens and an excellent macro lens). I have had an old Nikon 85 1.8 and an old Minolta 85 1.7 and they were not bad, just not as good as many more modern lenses. I hardly use the old FD 85 1.2 L (it does need a fix due to dissolved bearings though works for now) and I have an ancient Promura 135 1.8 I almost never use as the more modern lenses are so much better. I think I will get an older Sony E mount APSC camera this week to use with some of my remaining lenses but I also will not have any focal reducers for a while and my 85 "needs" will be met by using a Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 on APSC....Maybe look for some shorter lenses without a focal reducer? Will till be quite fast (I usually use 85s stopped down a bit no matter how good they are wide open with just a few uses wide open). My kit has pretty much stabilised now and will be 17mm tilt shift lens (EF), 24 1.4 (FD), 20-35 2.8 (EF), 55 1.8 (FE), 85 1.2 (FD), 150 2.8 (EF), 300 2.8 (adaptall) with a few other odd and ends but I will need to add a couple of focal reducers. These are from the Sigma 150 2.8 on an old Canon 450D 1.6x crop sensor camera.

Just pointing out that the instructions were as an illustration for the, erm, low cost "tribute" edition of the Hydrophobia that Kye has got rather than recommending the using the actual class A drug containing bag pictured

This is how its done on a ThinkTank Hydrophobia so you will need to replicate this. At its most basic level then, you can do this in a DIY fashion by removing the EVF cup and cutting a hole in the plastic cover to snugly fit around the EVF that the removal of the cup has exposed but keeping the mounting rails for the cup exposed. Then when you want to use it, you remove the EVF cup, press the cover onto the camera and slide the EVF cup back on and the overhang from the cup will hold it in place. As I'm being extra helpful this morning, I have just produced this handy guide illustrating that poorly described process via the medium of a Fuji X-T2, a plastic bag and some scissors

    RED Mini-Mag Exposed

Dayam.... Oh ? I was reading the comments on YouTube... Now their reputation is really on the line - someone started questioning if their 8K cameras are really 8K? Or upscaled internally from another lower resolution... “how low can you go????” let’s do the limbo!!!

  7. Despite the issues I am going to be getting the camera soon. The price/value ratio is just incredibly high no matter how you look at it. BM is now really the only one competing against RED with a compressed RAW format. The Pocket is of course cheaper than even the RED one and probably performs better. I of course hope they solve these current issues but even if not its still a solid camera.

    S1 Anyone?

I'm not sure the GH5 has the hardware to pull all the tricks the S1 can for autofocus, but it would be nice to see at least some of the S1 features trickle down into a GH5 update. Personally, I'm less interested in purchasing a full frame camera, but I think what we're seeing in the S1 may be a good indication of what to expect in a GH6. Would love to see some kind of Varicam color engine with 10 bit color and full V-Log in all of it's shooting modes. Hopefully we'll hear something about it when Panasonic releases the 10-25mm lens into the wild. I know I heard somewhere that Panasonic has begun work on it.

  9. One problem is that computers don't go through the same punishment as cameras. An overclocker can test their aftermarket cooling and know that if it works in a benchmark on their desk, it will work indefinitely. A camera needs to work in a benchmark, in the rain, 8 hours in direct sunlight, or on top of a mountain after jostling around for a 5 hour climb. Compounding that, the people overclocking computers are computer geeks. If you are out there buying individual parts for a custom computer build, you can probably be trusted with overclocking capabilities since you necessarily know a little bit about how the components work. On the other hand, the guy who knows enough about photography to want to push their camera to the limit doesn't necessarily have any knowledge of the computer components inside the camera. The people who could be trusted to overclock a camera are still the computer geeks, not the photographers (though there is a small segment of the market that is both).

    S1 Anyone?

Just an info after having browse the manual and watch stuffs about it. The Ex. tele converter function that works on the gh5, g9 (and others I guess), which is, I believe, similar to Sony's "clear zoom", is present on the S1. This, combined with the really effective ibis ("the hybrid shooter" on YT says it is close to the G9, when using IS2 with a compatible lens), is really appealing to me. Even if autofocus appears to be "meh" with the sigma MC21 adapter, it is possible to use lenses like the Canon 200 f2.8, and make it a really versatile tool by using the crop mode + Ex teleconverter. Same for the sigma 100-400 etc. Some guys on YT post a lot of birding video + photo samples with the Sony A7iii + mc11 + sigma 150-600 + clear zoom, and the results are very good ; at least from a "poor man's" versatile wildlife kit. With the S1, you add on top of that a very effective ibis... Too bad, prices are quite high ?

  14. @Mattias Burling Gunpowder better have gotten a good pat and possibly a treat for all his hard work. Results where interesting indeed. I agree with the conclusions. Just get out and shoot with what you have it’s probably more than good enough unless you are doing some kind of special case of shooting (green screen) or extreme grades where you want to change one color to another. Also let it be known to @DBounce that I picked B and it happened to be an EOS R. He should be happy.

  15. Web the last time I heard of Hook on this site was when Emanuel accused Grant Petty of "using a kindergarten to get staff from" Do you actually know Grant Petty and his philosophy towards the industry he's turned upside down?...probably not. Grant couldn't give two hoots about you or Emanuel Whoezbuts or this site. If he knows 50 times more than me thats cool, because I've spent 35 years doing the same gig as you with Network TV. Most people on this site don't know what a line cross is? Call me a silly bastard is ok, but I read your previous comments towards BMD and you are very American. Actually I might reach out to JB, Hook, and Grant via Lemac in Melbourne, as I worked with John Bowring a lot in the 80'90's.

  18. Shocking how bad the DJI mics are, even more shocking the external one that should improve the sound and in my opinion (20 years of pro sound) it doesn't, just changes it but doesn't make it particular good. Saramonic is much better, I would choose it for scratch sound but for anything serious I would be looking for a much better solution. Maybe a Rode Go or the new cheap Sennheiser wireless for voice recording, or an external solution (DR-60/DR100mkii or iii with a real microphone) for anything/everything else. The Saramonic with the Go could be sufficient for a v-logger/serious amateur/good family videos.

Yeah, it does look nice. I also deliberately went for the genuine Canon TC because I wanted to keep a 'pure' optical path to get the best results, and it seems it doesn't disappoint either, which is a good thing as I paid more for the TC than for the lens!! I'll see how it handles when I take it to a game or two. I'm thinking the only remaining item is probably a lens hood - flare is a big deal in these situations.

Canon FD 70-210mm F4 zoom lens and Canon FD 2x teleconverter test shots.... all shots taken with base ISO and manual WB on GH5. Due to the large range of zoom (both with and without the 2x TC) I moved the tripod when I added the TC) so you can't compare the framing between the sets of shots. Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 70mm f4 (140mm FF equivalent): Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 210mm f4 (420mm FF equivalent): Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 70mm f4 with 2x TC (280mm FF equivalent): Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 70mm f8 with 2x TC (280mm FF equivalent): Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 210mm f4 with 2x TC (840mm FF equivalent): Canon FD 70-210 F4 at 210mm f8 with 2x TC (840mm FF equivalent): Edit: just realised I stuffed up the f8 shots without the TC, so I removed them from the above. Will have to re-do.

  28. How many ML Raw shooters use LUTs to correct/grade their footage? My process has always been to run the footage through Resolve as BM Film Log to ProRes which I grade and edit in FCPX. In FCPX inspector panel, there’s an option to use a “Camera LUT” so while I was looking at some clips this morning, I tried the Arri LogC Camera LUT and it seems to work okay on some footage but since the exposure wasn’t intended for the LUT, it went wonky sometimes. Here’s a frame where it seems to have worked... As a reference, here is another frame from the same clip that I did without any LUT. I probably could have boosted the image more in hindsight... I guess I’m just curious if there is a simple way to expose for a LUT without having a monitor LUT available while shooting?

    RED Mini-Mag Exposed

He doesn't deserve it? RED have accused him of all sorts in a court case that had been running for nearly 3 years that has now been dismissed. A company owned by a multi-billionaire trying to bully a tiny operation out of business based on absolutely bogus claims and he's had to keep his mouth shut about it? I think he deserves to be able to make it into a 5 part mini-series after all that. Not to mention be bought a drink by everyone who will benefit from what he has laid out there.

  32. These are the key mappings for the two joysticks (the 8Bitdo is the small one) As the 8Bitdo is mapped to be used in a vertical orientation, it will be as follows There is currently no option for re-mapping keys inside the application but it is something that could be incorporated into a future version. You might also want to keep an eye on our PBC controller as for gimbal use as although it is primarily designed as a Rec/Stop controller (plus one additional one shot function) and monitor, it will have an expansion option for additional hardware switches that you can map to aperture/iso etc. https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/06/22/cda-tek-pbc-pocket-bluetooth-controller-for-bmpcc-4k-ursa-mini-pro/
