  1. Wow. Canon EF lenses working WITH IS on an NX1.... THAT would be some large jar of awesome sauce. As for the hack - It's fine if it doesn't go any further because it already has added so much. I say "let it be finished". One less thing to always be updating, right? As for it only adding "ten-percent better image quality", well that's HUGE. That's a lot. Especially if it's doing it right where it's needed. For critical images it has been worth the effort. I can get footage to work when cut in with higher-grade cameras now that that grunge in the shadows has been cleaned up. That was enough. Heck, it's everything really. If not for that one factor, I probably would have had to let my NX1 go in exchange for something a lot more expensive.

  4. In my opinion, NX1 is a much better experience. Best ergonomics, best battery, heat management, 120fps, no 4K crop (all the rest have some kind of crop, even X1.1), best menu system, Operating System, and all these best in class. If you can find for really cheap (less than 899euros, or less than 1399 including any of the S lenses) and you have some NX lenses already, then it is worth it. I don't see any competitive camera for less than double that price soon. Probably the next Sonies will be better (I am talking about overall quality, not a thing or two per camera), but they will be expensive, and they are not going to be here any time soon (the APS-Cs, I expect the next full frame models to be awesome, if based on the new A99 hardware).

  5. The NX1 is has quite a few features that the NX500 doesn't have mainly the EVF and no 4k crop. However I would suggest you don't upgrade and save your money to buy into a new system. Not because the samsung system is not good but because you will have to eventually so mine as well save as much money as you can to fully leap into a new system when the time comes. This is exactly what I am doing.

  7. Not completely sure if it is legit, even though, I'd dare to say we might find a Mavic touch there -- tap to focus will surely be pretty useful for a skyline: On the discussion, it is plainly natural there are much more number of work pieces shot on Phantom or GoPro than Mavic to conclude anything on topic. Straight out of the box, Mavic footage is a way more cinematic because of manual focus and a softer outcome. I concur that some artificial edges are not welcome at all. My perspective too.

  8. "I agree however like I mentioned we are all going to need to change systems eventually and if not buying a NX1 now is the difference between getting a one "pro" lens(24-70) or two "pro" lens(24-70 & 70-200) when you do switch systems in one or two years I would suggest you save your money. Or if you have money now that is burning a hole in your pocket and you are the type of person who needs to constantly be buying new gear. Invest in gear support like a mono pod or gimbal. Hell even get a drone all of these will improve your film making more than upgrading to an NX1 from an NX500." Not really, let's take a serious APS-C camera (a proper one, not the Sony gimmicks). The new Fuji is 1599$ and 329$ with the grip (without, it isn't even close to the NX1), and the similar to the S lens being 1199$/ if found a NX1 and 16-50S for less than 1399 as I suggested, then it is 1399 against 3127, and in some specific things NX1 is still better (to much better). Honestly, the only thing I can see the Fuji being truly better is one f-stop on video, and maybe the EVF(?), also more battery life, but only with the grip, and the more batteries (that have to be added to the price of 68$ each battery). So, when the next Fuji will be out, and it will truly be better than the NX1, then you will need around 1599-1899$ more dollars, so 5000$ for a little better camera. People forget that it is not only the cost of the camera you are buying, but the cost of the equipment, to reach that quality/features. People that started with the a6000, have now moved to a6500, with one stop to a6300 in between, and still this camera is not much better than the NX1 (overall quality, ergonomics, battery, heat management, less megapixels, menus, lack of great/some native APS-C lenses, etc), so they are near the 4000$, while they could have the NX1 for 1500$ with the kit lens. What I do, is really enjoying my 3 NX cameras with my set of lenses, and they still will be competitive in a couple of years, it isn't like they will suddenly vaporize. When I decide it is time to move on, I will reconsider my options, and I will have more money, as my cameras and lenses are all bought in very competitive prices already. Everyone has a drone these days, and I prefer to rent an Inspire one, with a pro user (it is between 150-200$ here, for a one full day of shooting, much cheaper if you only need a Phantom one) than do that as well (and spend more money), and gimbals are going to have their revolution this and the next year, I wouldn't consider it a must buy right now, and good monopods with a head can be found new from 150 - 300$. NX500 is good too. But is my second camera.

  9. Here's another example where we can see the strengths (e.g. almost 1-stop faster + manual focus towards to shallower DOF as handy narrative tool and previously written in this thread):

  11. Thanks for the complement. I too like the look I got in that video. Yeah I actually loved the D750/nikon images, usability wise it was an issue with me before because I was doing a lot of Run & Gun. Now that I shoot mainly sticks, I'm considering picking one up. I don't know what nikon does, but I do think they have better motion cadence than Canon. I do also miss my D800, just something about it's image. It's weakness was it's horrific moire.

  13. Other than the focus and smoother UHD route avoiding such artificial edges for a much pleasant cinematic tool, I concur that's still soon to compare videos made by one and other options. There are only a few samples available out there yet on Mavic side against the older solutions for aerial acquisition with these small "toys". Even though and basically, as bird, we surely have a game changer :-) And finally, here's an interesting review to also focus on the capture device: http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/10/18/dji-mavic-pro-review-is-it-the-perfect-drone-for-the-occasional-flyer/

  15. The worst that can happen in my experience with a 5Dmkiii is nothing. If you ask me the old talk about reliability on the mkiii is outdated. Not once has there been any sort of issue for me that wasnt 100% my fault. I sometimes get contacted by people who has had issues and it always turns out to be a cheap CF card or that they aren't using a 5Dmkiii.

  16. Some of your Nikon work put these cameras on the radar for me. That winter beach video you did with the Tokina/Angenieux zoom was a real eye opener to me as to what these Nikons can do. Yeah, the 750 is a way better camera, I'm just unsure if it's worth the upgrade this far in the product cycle. With the D7200, I'd get a lot of the video features for half the cost. And then if I get along well with her, I can get the 760, or whatever it will be named. Who knows, their AF may be up to Camon's DPAF with the next generation.

  19. 1. The m4/3 mount is way better IMO to adapt many lenses 2. Magic Lantern is not that reliable, I would not use it for sensitive work were you just "need to get the shot" But you won't shoot raw anyway in that case. So that's a couple of reasons, but they are not that relevant depending on what you do I guess :D I just ordered a KB 64Gb 1066x, I have to say, it is way more reliable than my Lexar card ! (but My lexar must be a very bad unit :s)

    cheap rig

Yup, definitely do the cowboy studios rig. It's very nice being able to let go of both hands, and the thing just works. It's got some quirks too, for example, your breathing can affect it more than a traditional shoulder rig because of the front pad that rests pretty low on your torso. Having said that, you can't do better in the cheap range, and the thing is indestructible and folds up nice and small - can throw it in a backpack.

I am gonna third what everyone is saying about the Cowboy Studio rig. you can find it on amazon cheap and it does the job. It just lets you put the cam in a good spot, holds on to your shoulder. I have used this rig so much, definitely a good place to start.

  32. There is no live histogram with the D5500. What I do is shoot a few seconds of a representative view of my shot, and then quickly review it -- no need to play it, just see the (default) first frame. By enabling histograms (in the menus) you can have three colour or a single luminosity histogram display of that first frame to check your current exposure is not clipping. Use the up/down joystick buttons to toggle through display of histograms or no histograms. This is obviously less elegant than having a live histogram active all the time, but after a while it only takes a short delay to make the check. Of course, there will be a further delay if you actually need to adjust your aperture with an auto lens in response to what you learned from the histogram! You have to go out of live view to make the aperture change and then perhaps shoot another short video clip to again preview with the histogram in order to confirm that your new exposure is going where you want it. With a manual aperture lens you do not need to leave live view to see an aperture change, and I've got the FN button assigned to ISO changes to help speed that up, but you still have the delay of shooting another clip to check the new histogram. I put up with all this because it's important enough to me to want to know where my exposure is technically. And I've come to prefer the Nikon video image over my previous experience with Canon DSLR video: I've been using a D5200 since 2013 and got a D5500 early this year.

  33. There is a difference: first. At 0:27, the RX100 IV wobbles like a jelly fish and the RX100 V does not. Second, look at this comparison I have made:

  34. Hear ye, hear ye! I love the sensoric results of the D5300... but man, I come from an interchangeable lens background that started with the GH2. I just don't get OVFs and I like to work in liveview. That makes the D5300 just a horrid experience to be quite honest. That slapping around of the mirror. Geez. I mean, especially when shooting stills in liveview; I like the spirit, applauding yourself and all, but just 'no'... atleast the higher-end bodies have some tripod mode or something, that only uses contrast based AF detection and keep the mirror from slapping around. And indeed, with EVFs and liveview you get that what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience and all the aids that we're used to from all these mirrorless cameras making shooting a breeze. Why can't they include that? Why do DSLRs remain to be so traditional? Ideally, I'd be shooting a mirrorless D5500, because that 24MP APS-C sensor and those colors right off the bat... ooh la la. That's where it's at. I don't need fullframe. Big bodies, big lenses. No chance of keeping things small and light. But APS-C... a great combination of compact and performance (& price). And closest to S35. Yet, when needed with mirrorless systems, you could boost it towards fullframe if so desired. With a mirrorless APS-C Nikon, finally people would give fighting over the Samsung NX1 a rest already. I've been wanting to go mirrorless APS-C from the M4/3 system now... but Sony's not going to be it. Fujifilm is kinda close, but things like no vari-angle display and no sensor stabilization, still put some of the M4/3 cameras in front for me personally. Samsung NX1 and EOS M5 are not going to work for me. It would just be great if Nikon made some efforts there. Tell you what, they could give Sony and Panasonic a real challenge, 'cause I'd be all over it like *finger snap* that. But you know... it is what it is. Purely based on quality of the results... it's pretty spectacular; I guess that's why we just put up with quirks like that...

    BMMCC handle/evf.

I feel I've incrementally thrown way too much money at the BMMCC to get it functioning - vintage super16 lenses, SmallHD 502, Small Rig cage, rods, Mattebox, IRND - and now looking at shouldermount/lanc trigger options. Still most of this stuff can/will be used for other rigs in future so if you look at it as brain only, it still works out to be good value..

  37. Very good quality! I only see some jerky movements here and there with slow motion, especially when the camera is pointed down (but maybe it is the compression from youtube) and some strange reflections when backlight, for the rest it is really impressive!

  38. X5/X5R are another league... Let's not mix up apples to oranges ;-) Phantom 4 or Karma have nothing to do with. The reception theory ; ) can fit but people are still stuck on the wrong variables, obsessed with definition when this doesn't necessarily mean better IQ, on the contrary, more often than we could aspire to.

  39. Mio caro, exactly my POV! We both share the same cinematic perspective on motion pictures, let it alone the aerial footage. Unfortunately, people are too uneducated with their small displays. We live in a sad age where artifacts are the king. Sawtooth borders (when not aliasing) are taken for sharp content... What else can we say? *Phew* To me, this is the first small drone to focus my attention on it. For the same reasons you mention. Still from the European press presentation in Lisbon (I know very well those locations and how curious is to me to see them to be shot like that with so tiny capture device -- DJI should/could/can slash the GoPro business with that toy/cam beyond the drone industry) take a look from 3:48 minute on:

  40. To me it is pretty good! The shot on the roof shows that moire is not too severe... so it is already a good point in my opinion. Two days ago I shot a music video and there was also an operator with his Phantom 3 Pro, it seems more "digital" to me from the shots I have from it.

  41. Canon have the colour-path and codec nailed to perfection on the XC10. I am also impressed with the dynamic range of the sensor, even in the most contrasty picture profile it rarely struggles no matter the light thrown at it. I have also been enjoying the stabilisation, very impressive. Shot for 3 weeks in Italy with it and editing now.

  42. Thank you very much for your input on this matter. While I understand that all sensor designs have their aliasling limitations, real-world testing of a C300 (large format single sensor) vs. XF305 (3-chip design) a while back showed that the C300, even though utilizing oversampling via a 4K sensor for HD recording, was way more sensible towards moiré and aliasing than the XF305. In regards the XC10, I can only tell you and the rest of the community that it has been the most versatile addition to my image gathering tools in a long time. The footage, no matter if 4K or FullHD, is easier to work with than whatever comes out of my GH4 and color-wise (especially in regards to reds) it's also more forgiving than my F55 (which, on the other hand, is 10 bit footage which is undoubtedly an advantage). One could argue all night whether it's "true" 4K or not, but in the end, it's a magnificent little camera that makes my work easier.
