  3. I really don't want to start a debate about Samsung so I am going to just say that that is your opinion and my opinion is that samsung makes many fantastic products with leading edge technology. I also believe your statement about "Most of what they do is pretty shite or a sneaky copy of X" could be said about almost every company that has ever existed including apple, Cannon, Panasonic, Black Magic, etc. They all copy each other and they all make alot of shity products that is what competition is all about.

  4. The Mini 4.6k looks more modern to me. Whether that's good or bad is subjective. The Terra has many benefits over the Ursa Mini 4.6k too - such as higher resolutions, higher FPS, much smaller, much lighter, much more modular, switchable shutter (the irony!), can be speed boosted, mount changeable, can be powered with smaller Sony batteries, SSD's...... If the image quality is up there with the Ursa Mini 4.6k, which I believe it will be (seeing previous footage from other models) - it's almost a no-brainer for many cinematic shooters.

    The CMCC?

Here is my response to all the usual hate that everything gets at Nofilmschool. "When will Canon understand that the only type of camera user is the artsy narrative movie maker? Why do they think that there are people out there taking stills, collecting news, surveilance, special things like remote controled robots, live broadcast, regular home users? That doesnt exist. Just look through the comments. Artsy narrative movies with no lighting in high frame rates and razor thin dof. That is the only type of content created anywhere in the world. And the people that makes them are broke, so it cant cost as much as it needs for profit. News, sports, porn, childrens TV, docs, reality, event, concerts.... Nope all gone. In fact, all of those things are illegal to even discuss online. Anyone who makes or even discuss such productions will be killed by the "Bitter Online Film Looking Video Makers Movement"."

I'm still laughing at the tombstone piledriver... It actually sounds like a camera or tool... Made me think of other stupid names like the RED 16K StoneCold Stunner

  9. Think your right. Panasonic has the potential but it doesnt feel like we are there yet. I guess BMD is the most likely but Im not counting out others like Bolex , Craft, etc. BTW, many of us get serious G.A.S during NAB. This year I might have a cure. Instead of following the "Wait until NAB", Im unboxing my very own LS300 today EDIT: That reminds me, for the first NAB, JVC is under the loupe. Hopefully they release the 120p to be able to promote it as current. And who knows, maybe something new.

I didn't need to read it all to recognize the "Nigerian-style" And I can only agree and repeat my arguments : "Hmmm, If I was only mailing to potential buyer-groups, I do not want ANY speculation about my business ! They surely must know this would happen and COULD have provided some photographs or more specs ... OK to keep secretive, but this is an exaggeration and a VERY "shady" sign ! Also I checked jcs' link : http://petapixel.com/2013/02/25/craft-camera-a-diy-digital-camera-made-with-cardboard-and-arduino/ and it leads to an interesting web-address http://craft-camera.com/ ... much like http://www.craftcamera.com/" We want to believe in the CHEAP RED (even RED knows to use this !) & the PROMISED BLACKMAGIC ! 15. For a laugh, i'll break down this email from a salesman's/ executive producer's point of view. "Greetings! - denotes all times of day and suggests something festive is entailed. Yes, we actually exist and have a voice. - you don't know who we are but you did at some point, but you have forgotten. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by all the support. - OK, even if you don't remember us, everyone else does. (Classic 'humblebrag'). And because of that, we are only sharing the following email to you—our early adopter email list. - FYI, you are special and unique and part of a private club who got in first. Aren't you lucky? We have looked forward to sending this email for months. You should know that we will not publish this anywhere else. That means you are the first to know. - you owe us your attention because we have invested a lot of time on this product exclusively for your benefit, and you have such a unique opportunity here because we haven't told the world about it yet because you are our favorite person. When we tell everyone, we can't make any promises on your VIP status. I bet many of you have wondered, “What’s the deal with Craft?" There has been an outpouring of interest for Craft from all over the world and from all walks of life—from Hollywood, indies, corporate marketing departments, agencies, and amateurs. They have reached out by the thousands trying to figure out what we are working on. - (more humblebrag) My lord, have you been missing out! For over a year, we have been developing the Craft Camera—a new system that we believe will help users tell better stories. - we have developed a system to make you a creative genius, you are a craftsman and we are called Craft, geddit? On April 18th around 12pm EST, we will announce Craft Camera on craftcamera.com. This announcement will include initial information, a first glimpse of the Craft Camera, and we will start taking initial reservations. - Sshhh, listen, here are some hard facts. We are committing to a time and place for one time only. We will blow you away with a few seconds of footage and allow you to give us your credit card details, BUT only if you are on time and in the right place. Since Craft Camera is still in development, we won’t be releasing every single detail because we hope to get feedback from reservation holders before we publish final details. - in case you aren't impressed, don't worry, you haven't been given all the information and glimpses yet, be patient and get in line anyways. We will figure this spec stuff out eventually once we receive enough complaints to warrant changes. A reservation will require a $500 deposit, your name, email, and phone number. Reservations will only be available on craftcamea.com and will be 100% refundable. Your deposit will be deducted from the total price once you place an order at a later date. - (classic close) Absolutely no risk involved. But wait there's more... As a reservation holder, you will also receive a 10% discount off your final order along with some additional perks like first looks, priority reservations on future products and a few other surprises. - (classic time sensitive bonuses) Please note we are offering a limited number of reservations which is why we wanted you to know about this first. This means when we hit our limit we will stop taking reservations. No exceptions. The reservations are first come first serve and when the cameras ship, we will do so in the order that the reservation was placed. - remember, this deal is exclusive to you and time sensitive. This is urgent! The Craft Camera comes in 2 models. There are 4K and HD models with a price range between $699 and $2899 depending on the configuration. Initial units will ship late 2016. - (actual information, vague, but actual information). Comforting because facts make you feel good, right? But not to many or you will commit from informed deliberation rather than impulse, which is not cool for us. I will leave you with this—we believe there is a huge need for Craft Camera. We believe it is a revolutionary product that will give production alums a great tool to do things they couldn’t do before while opening up storytelling through motion pictures to a whole new generation. - (rehash of making you a creative genius theme) You will have an advantage amongst your peers. You will be Spielberg, or maybe Jim Jarmusch... at the very least. With that said, we understand Craft Camera might not be for you and...we are fine with that! We will still treat you with respect and we hope the same from you. - seriously, no pressure. I am truly humbled by all the support, and I hope you become a part of the Craft family. - (humblebrag,) we have heritage and will be around forever. Keep telling beautiful stories. - we are on your side, you artist you *pinches cheek*. Monies? What's that? Scott Brag(g) - Mr. S. Humble... Founder of Craft Digital Systems Inc. " - the absolute boss and the ducks nuts. That was fun (for me). Having sold stuff from Kirby vacuum cleaners to tvc airtime, its a trip down memory lane. I wouldn't touch this kit with a ten foot pole. A bit too sleazy for me. If it's a young company then I would ditch the bullet-benefit-close-bonus approach and just talk about the things you are trying to solve for your target demographic. Visuals, ergonomics, mobility, compatibility... etc. (even if its just your intentions, with no hard specs to announce)

  16. OK, some advancements - namely a way to speed up applying mods as soon as the camera wakes up from sleep. See more here https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/doc/Boot_Process_and_Speeding_up_Mods.md Also, a small poll and explanation: If you don't want to do it from telnet, wait a few days, there will be a nicer, more automated way to do it. If you are starting other things (bitrate hacks, whatever) - please do check if they are running already. You can use keyscan as test as it will return 0 only if it's not already running, like this /opt/usr/devel/bin/keyscan /dev/event0 /dev/event1 /opt/usr/devel/bin/ && my_program Just to make things clear - it's not modifying the firmware.I have no intention to mess with firmware as I have no easy way to repair my camera. We slightly tweak the "read only" rootfs (like we already do for BT hack - we just change a single line in script) and move our scripts from SD card to internal filesystem - the one mounted under /opt as "read write" by default. It's not going to brick a camera, I have even put a swap file to extend RAM on that filesystem and everything worked. NB, I have been using and testing this for two days now - no side effects. The main difference is that right now, when you pop out the SD card with mods and put in a clean one - your camera acts as if it was neved modded. With this it would be modded even without a SD card (ie, it would be modded with every SD card). All modifications are fully reversible and would be reversible from aforementioned utility. So, a small poll - do you want me to make an installer that will install mods to the camera internally in order to work faster?

    Canon 18-80mm f4

This is a really weird post Policar... I don't understand how you can dismiss this lens on the aesthetics of it's image when only a press release has been released. It's a Canon cine zoom so it will probably look and perform great. You act like people who are using it would be compromising their precious artistic integrity somehow and that all people who do video work without artistic motivations are hacks who are below the great minds of this forum. Then you assert that the person you are quoting shouldn't be so small-minded...

  25. The Z E1 isn't really a story telling cinema camera, now. Seems like the Craft cams will be more like a mini RED/Kinefinity/Axiom/BMMCC it seems, atleast somewhere along those lines. The Z E1 is more like a Chinese GoPro with interchangeable lens mount and bigger sensor. Either way, it's welcome to see more players entering the market. Pushes innovation and lowers prices (same for other parts of filmmaking, be it the Veydra and XEEN cine primes or Aputure light panels and monitors). Of course you're allowed to be very sceptical. I at first joked this was just a social experiment, to see how many people would jump on a newsletter without any big effort and promises, just a hip site... whereas the other cam had more to show for, but you couldn't possibly keep a straight face looking at their website and take them all that serious. If they're legit, they did a very 2016-job keeping it mysterious and interesting, creating some talk and speculations about it. And to see how fast you can fill a limited amount of perk-reservations will get you (as a company making these) some insight in how it will be received and perhaps adjust production plans accordingly as well as stabilizing a core base of enthusiastic folks and rewarding them with some perks like discounts for giving them their trust and interest. Indeed much like crowdfunding. Which is also a marketing strategy. People just love to jump on something they can support. Take for example the ridiculous Meyer lenses, I bet they would probably sell shit like I imagine the Handevision ones (must be a reason they keep returning as Amazon lightning deal), shouldn't there have been people looking for new exciting hipster stuff. People don't like corporate schtuff, they want a 'brand of the people'. It's basically clever free promotion, getting press, get people talking. PeakDesign probably doesn't need funds or support anymore, but I bet crowdfunding as a medium just sells easier. And putting down a refundable deposit? You know how many people put down 1000 bucks for the all new Tesla 3? A lot. Sure, Tesla is familliar and Craft Camera isn't, but I don't find it all that fishy. Hey, we'll know soon enough!

    Craft Camera is coming!

Craft Camera - cardboard and Arduino? http://petapixel.com/2013/02/25/craft-camera-a-diy-digital-camera-made-with-cardboard-and-arduino/ Cardboard is lighter than magnesium or carbon fiber... Take that BM and Red! On a serious note, cameras are now computers with sensors and lens mounts. In the future it will be very easy to buy modular components to build any kind of camera one desires, similar to the way we can build custom PCs today. With computational photography there won't be as much need to change lenses- DOF, 3D etc. can be computed from the multiple sensors. Compare to what happened in the audio world. Analog was thought to be never be matchable with digital by many purists (especially tube amps). Now just about everything is available as a plugin, simulating all major amps, preamps, and effects (even microphones to some extent). Some of it needs more work, but a lot of it is good enough to make even die-hard purists happy. Check out the Axe Fx for guitarists: http://www.fractalaudio.com/p-axe-fx-ii-preamp-fx-processor.php amazing sound!

    Predictions for NAB

My prediction: I think that this may be the first year that blackmagic will not introduce a new camera...
    1 point
  29. Yeah, the Shure sounds like a great mic/recorder and it seems like it would be great for foley, but I don't think it's exactly what I'm looking for as a possible audio solution for the GX85. Yeah, I think Martin Wallgren must have a pretty good relationship with Panasonic because he has tested preproduction models for the FZ300, the GX85 and I think maybe the GX8. In fact, his video with the FZ300... ... Helped me decide to buy one. I am really surprised that they included CineLikeD on the FZ300, but it won't be available with the GX85. As I tried to say in my last post, but wrote it in too much of a hurry... Even though I know I can get a cleaner image, with better skin tones with the Natural profile, there is just something I like about CineLikeD. And this is my dilemma. I would love to keep both the G7 and the GX85 (if I get it) but I'm not sure I can afford to have both and I'm not sure I would want an interchangeable lens, Panasonic camera without the CineLikeD profile. Decisions, decisions.

    Craft Camera is coming!

I believe so too. It's reminiscent of RED (kinda). It just feels wrong to ask for money first, or I guess advertise the cost, before really announcing anything other than that it's a camera and there'll be an HD and 4k version. The pricing is pretty damn cheap, but who knows? It could have an EF mount, a PL mount, it could have an obscure mount we've never heard of. It could be raw, it could be a 2/3" sensor, it could be anything. Advertising the price first just feels wrong, and feels kinda shady. But we'll see Monday I guess! Will they be at NAB?

  31. on a not entirely unrelated note I love the way the walking dead uses color grading to set the mood When the characters are in a safe location like behind the walls in their compound everything is super bright and all the colors are really saturated then they will quickly transition to being super flat and de-saturated. I am not a huge fan of this show as a whole but think it is a perfect example how color grading can really make the viewer feel a certain way eg. safe and comfortable and unsafe and on edge.

  33. I think that most everything they did with this camera was for their TV's. Sharpening the image would be to give more of a WOW factor when watching home movies on their Samsung TV's. Being Samsung, I'm amazed that the NX1 is actually as good as it is. Most of what they do is pretty shite or else a sneaky copy of what Apple or some other company has already come up with. They are a shit company and they way they handle their camera business being a total failure is yet more proof. The image does look overly sharp to me but still ... I love the camera.

  38. I certainly wouldn't panic buy a Raven in fear of the prices going up... RED have halved prices in the past, based on their competitors actions and this is NAB week... Give it a week and see how the land lies. If RED put up their prices, you will doubtless have a bunch of other stuff to choose from.

  42. I think max. bitrate (according my tests) is 110Mbps to have full 120fps. Thanks to latest hack version by Vasile I could set this value to HQ mode and 180Mbps to PRO mode - if need 120fps I just change PRO to HQ. Yes, more significant improvement than for 4K: I can use full available bitrate (180Mbps with Lexar 2000x), image is very nice (I will start it much more than 120fps now), only (yes, heavy) line skipping, no macroblocking.

  43. Thanks mate, I cannot wait for the 60mbps replacement for 25fps 1080p as it seems 1080p is the only one substantially benefiting from bitrate increase at least to the eye. Nice work non the less, you deserve many shekels and gratitudes! EDIT: I am a fool, I should have looked in the zip before making haste posting a comment, 60mbps pro added for both NX1 and NX500 also HQ.

This is not very far from a magic lantern sw. as to the nr, there is the option to enable or disable it, but I never understood if it affect also video or only jpg stills. It should be investigated and seen if it stores the variable of 'nr on' somewhere, like it happens for bitrate.

  45. I was packing up the loaner thats shipping back to JVC when I thought I would do one last thing. Some experimenting with the Cine Gamma. The J-Log is really great. It has a nice roll of and I love using it specially on bright days with a high dynamic range. But in dim light, specially low contrast, it doesn’t withstand grading very well. The noise can turn very ugly and FPN if not careful. So far my fix for it has been to expose down. If its dark, let it be dark. This isn’t a night for day camera. Today I tested something else. Anybody that uses Sony and S-Log knows that in many low contrast situations its better to switch to "Cine Gamma”. Specially to preserve skin tones. And it seems JVC is no different. I shot some clips of myself in a mirror. There is no direct light hitting me, its pretty dim. If you look at my sweater, on the right arm, you can see how the J-Log has a nicer roll of, while the Cine Gamma has a harsher clip. But you can probably also see how much nicer the skin gets, specially on the shadow side. There where less banding on the wall as well. And the J-Log is just about to fall apart after the grade and a WB correction. The Cine Gamma had correct WB in camera but still feels like there is some more leverage there. J-Log Ungraded J-Log Graded Cine Gamma Ungraded Cine Gamma Light grade Cine Gamma Graded to my liking So a quick unscientific conclusion is, J-Log in bright and HDR light. Cine Gamma when uncertain. Now I can’t wait until my own LS300 gets here, because I need to give the Gamma settings and Picture Profiles a thorough run through. There is for example a WDR setting that I want to fool around with. Cine Gamma WDR Ungraded Cine Gamma WDR Light Grade
