  1. Hey Everyone, Here’s a bunch of stuff I’ve shot, graded and edited for music videos between 2012-2018. The shots in the reel not done by me are the drone shots. For you camera nerds, I used...... Sony FS700, FS5, FS7, F55, A7SII, A6500. Panasonic GH3, GH5. DJI X3, X5R.

  2. I am certainly not bigger than a camera company, or more important than Blackmagic and I think people may have seen the hysterics as a bit silly. I accept that yes, possibly I have shot myself in the foot. Having said that, EOSHD is bigger than me as well and is a real community. I was standing up for the community and not just for myself. This was a perfect storm for me. A combination of several factors which caused me to get upset enough to write that article... First the Canon EOS R launch and the new levels of invasive of PR offensive we are seeing from the camera companies to quell dissent and turn even Caleb Pike into a "it's not perfect but WOW what a great camera" kind of guy. Rather than the person he should be, a "1.8x crop sucks" kind of reviewer. Secondly the overwhelming feeling of shithead sycophants climbing above my site, in the VIP lane, completely undeservedly. Thirdly the geographical positioning of the Blackmagic event, it being on my doorstep. Next the fact Cinema5D were paid to fly in. I could have walked in. Finally, the John Brawley factor on here and the lack of support from most of my own readers, honestly all this is enough to give someone a nervous breakdown. It's hard to really get across how I feel, because it is a weird situation and I think the internet is a bit weird as well. In real life, people don't say the things I say or say the things to me that I have had to put up with. People need to calm down, myself included. It's only a camera. But I do feel the future of camera and tech journalism is at stake. In fact it may already be absolutely dead. And the most depressing thing of all is that the reader is fine, unawares, and on the most part notices no issue. No, that wasn't my intention. Yes I have dug myself into a very silly hole. I'll be the first to admit that. Yes Johnnie at Cinema5D is laughing his business head off as we speak.

  5. A dignified and reflective response Andrew. We all act small too often. Acting big is what we need more of. My unsolicited advice: Delete the anti BM article - it doesn't reflect your intellect but, as you say above, it's the result of a perfect emotional storm. I'd offer JB an olive branch privately - he's a good man and a valuable voice for any creative community. A lot of your members look up to you and it's a good opportunity to show them the value of thoughtfulness. IMHO.

  8. Really? Most cameras today are absolutely superb. Compromises, yes but there is so much choice out there that one can find the compromise which suits every need.

  9. 1st - people not happy with this site should go elsewhere. 2nd - this site produces valuable article on cameras and also a nice exchange place in the forum 3 - andrew gets less invites to event not because he shoots not as good as Dpreview, but because he is critical. So companies don’t want to hear their camera is shit. But they are. Most cameras are shit for various reasons and there is abyssimal margin for improvement, and it’s hard to find à cameras that does most things right. When things are right he says it too. We need critical people especially when all other reviews have their rating scale between 4/5 and 5/5. 4 - I canceled the BM preorder not because of the joker who produced the answer shown in Andrew’s article but because I realized I am not gonna pay for a camera bigger and heavier than a GH5 FF / A7S3 that has a sensor smaller than a nail and can’t focus. Appreciate he said we are clowns nonetheless ?

  10. My post did not have malicious intent. I've been following the blog for years, since the 5D Mark II & Magic Lantern craze. I've used a lot of your tips and they've been very helpful. I only just recently joined the forum. I know you shoot, I think anybody with any degree of familiarity with the site knows that you shoot. You have many haters, why I don't know. I'm sure you know why. That hasn't stopped me from visiting the site because I don't know you and I don't know the people who don't like you. I just know that you're an alternative source of information for the products that I'm interested in. The forum members are most likely the same people that are on bmcusers, the blackmagic forum, nofilmschool, cinema5d, etc. My point was simply that making a public scene because you didn't get what you wanted isn't going to make them send you the blackmagic pocket 8k when it's comes out. It's only going to put you further down the black list. This is Life 101. I understand your frustration, you've done a lot of good work over the years and helped a lot of people, but this is industry bullshit. It's in every industry. If you want to be a part of the "in-crowd" of the industry you have to play the game. If not, just say fuck em and do your own thing. Remain independent. Or... Buy the camera like everybody else because you love it and show them LOOK I've gotten 1,000,000 impressions on my review, you need to pay attention to what I'm doing over here. Anyway, best of luck to you in the future. I'll be looking forward to your unbiased review.

  12. I think it’s also important to stress that 1 slot doesn’t necessarily equal 1 slot. 1 XQD is order of magnitude more reliable than 1 SD. The discussion right now is as if the Nikon Z and Canon R were equals with their 1 slot but they’re not at all. I also feel the lens line up Nikon starts with is much more practical and promising than Canons. Rather than the traditional high/low - a cheap not so good but small 1.8 OR a great, large and expensive 1.4/1.2 Nikon seems to deliver a larger than usual 1.8, priced in the middle with absolutely top class optical performance and weather sealing. I always preferred the way Leica did this. The Summilux aren’t necessarily better than the Summicron. They’re just faster and subsequently more expensive. The new Canon RF 35mm isn’t an L lens. It’s the same old ‘sell inferior slower glass at lower price’. In contrast, the 35mm 1.8 S is S-line, which is th Z counterpart to L lenses. It’s larger than a typical 35mm 1.8 suggesting more lenses and higher optical performance. It’s weather sealed. But it’s not huge and heavy, I’d say it’s a good compromise. Both price wise and size wise. Compare with a Sony 35mm f1.4. Same goes for the 24-70 f4 S. rumour has it it’s as sharp or better than the 24-70 f2.8 G Nikkor. Sure a 24-105 has a longer range but it’s bigger and heavier and importantly isn’t consistent with 2.8 zooms. Many have two zooms. A slower f4 is nice to have for travel and personal use. I for one am pretty happy about consistency, that way my visualisation isn’t fucked with. Nikons strategy doesn’t look as sexy on paper as Canons. But looks much much more intelligent to me. Like, who really wants to carry that f2 zoom? Who really wants to carry that 1.2 or spend over two grand on it? I sure do not. I think Nikon’s 0.95 is equally ridiculous - it’s to make headlines. Those fast lenses sell systems. They make people feel excited. They entertain a fantasy. The same reasons car makers are involved in racing. I think, I hope, that Nikon has a sleeper hit in its 24-70 f4 and it’s two f1.8 primes. Photography is coming home.

  15. Had it been an APSC camera the lenses would have been smaller and cheaper. The camera would have been smaller and cheaper too. I’m sure the video from the R looks fantastic but it doesn’t make sense as a hybrid camera to have that kind of crop. I mostly take stills and I always try to learn to visualise my focal lengths before raising the camera. That’s near impossible if my 50mm is no longer a 50mm when I switch to video. If I would buy the R I would use it as a 1080p camera only, for full sensor read out.

  16. I am almost 60 years old. Been shooting since I was 15. 45 years - holy crap that is almost 1/2 a century. I have seen many leaps in technology. Today I still work full-time creating videos using Sony RX10 IV's. Still shoot stills with Nikon. Been with Nikon since the beginning.I have tried Canon & Panasonic. I liked Canon to a point but always went back to the Nikon because of the lenses. However I had a brand new 10-24 Nikkor that needed warranty repair. That was a first for me. They just don't make them like they use too. Anyway I saw Andrews post about sticking a camera up an arse? That sounds painful. Point being - no camera will ever be the end all.....and especially now it will just keep getting crazier. You want to know what is crazy? My first BetaCam cost $35,000. Shot standard def video on tape. Man what I would not have gave back in 1985 to have a camera like the Sony RX10 IV. 4K video shot on memory card? The Sony is not perfect either. No camera is. For awhile I chased every new camera. First the RED - which I had on order but passed. Before that I was ready to purchase a $60,000 Panasonic VariCam that shot 720p. Whew - glad I did not go that route. In 2006 I finally got into HD (sort of) with the Panasonic HVX. It shot great 720p video but the 1080 sucked. I met Barry Green at some local show and in 2007 I worked the Panasonic Booth at NAB. It was a great experience but they never called me back. I did purchase the Panasonic GH2. Awesome video for the day. But the photo side sucked. Then I added the Blackmagic BMPC I think it was called? Again awesome video but the ergonomics sucked. I rushed to buy the Blackmagic pocket camera. Very disappointing. I sold the HVX, GH2 and the Blackmagics and settled on the Sony RX10. I used that camera for quite a while. All along I kept my eye on the trends and passed on the other Sony RX10 upgrades. Then I shut down my video business in 2015 and took a full time job which offered a great salary and healthcare. Something I could not afford anymore because of ObamaCare. At my new job I was able to set-up a video/photo department. We have 2 Sony RX10 IV's and we use Nikon D5600's for photo work. And the best part is I don't have to pay for anything any longer! It's a lot more fun to do video/photo work without worrying about where the next paycheck is coming from. As it so happens I was in Las Vegas in April on a family trip and managed to go to the NAB show on opening day. I have not been to one since I worked the 2007 show. It was the same except the technology has changed. Still crowded. Most of the people working the booths had no idea what they were talking about. Saw Barry Green doing a "live show" which was pretty bad. You would have thought that Panasonic would have had a better presentation by now? I could go on - but the point being - technology will always improve - maybe get cheaper and I wish I was 20 again! Ha

  17. HALLELUJAH!! Thank you, and I mean it. Finally there is someone here who has not just arrived in the past month or so and skim-read the blog for less than 5 minutes!!! Did you know Johnnie / Nino at Cinema5D go around saying I can't shoot!!? Unbelievable. I find the pro video community SO FULL of arseholes sometimes, it's unreal. No wonder choose to be outside it rather than be chummy with such egotists and their naked self-interest. I would like this thread to get back on the topic of the overrated Blackmagic Pocket Camera so this will be the last post for a while from me, unless attacked again. See you in the other threads about other cameras.

  18. Andrew, the comments about grading weren’t intended for you specifically. Read the post. I was talking in generalities about recent facebook groups I’d left and a similar entitled tone here. It was not a personal attack but you chose to take it that way. Cmon, I shoot these shots for BMD for exactly this purpose. To be downloaded and graded. If I was truly precious about it I wouldn’t do it again and again would I ? You’re throwing a tantrum, publicly, because you dind’t get an invite to a BMD event that is seems like few even knew about. Somehow you think that’s got something to do with me so you went and wrote a post about me. A really lovely piece too. I’ve said it already a thousand times. I don’t work for them. I don’t have that much to do with them day to day. Last contact I had with anyone at BMD was weeks ago. It’s not my job to make sure YOU get some attention from them. That’s on you to make that case. And by the way, this kind of childish unprofessional behaviour is exactly the kind of reason any company would think twice about working with you. Instead, you launch a highly personal assasination blog post as well as numerous personal attacks because I dared to try and explain that to you in a way that you thought wasn’t deferential enough ? You don’t do this for free. You sell something. I don’t but you actually do. Having traffic come to this site means you have a greater chance of selling something. You sell LUT’s and you sell guides and you use the traffic here to do so. So don’t pretend all this free traffic is somehow a favour to BMD and free publicity. I didn’t even see the post you made about the BMD footage till your personal attack on me, but I noticed when I read your BMD post you’re mixing in a bunch of references to LUT’s you’re trying to flog. How about this... Delete every single post of mine. All the IP that I’ve posted and shared on this forum? All those posts where I’ve shared my knowledge and experience. Go ahead and put your money where your mouth is. JB

  19. I don’t actually work for Blackmagic. It’s not my job to make you happy or smooth anything over when you have an issue with them not inviting you to an event. It’s not my job to pander to anyone. I don’t answer to BMD. Just like you I’m an independent opinion and my opinion doesn’t reflect Blackmagic’s views. I think you’re misunderstand why I’m here. Nice job on the personal attack Andrew. JB

  20. What a shame. Who are these "deep state" BMD insiders that are here pushing an agenda ? Myself and Hook. Who else ? What do you guys think, there's a plot and conspiracy ? You guys don't wat these contributions I guess ? I'm here because I've been a member here for years and I'm on many camera forums and this is just another one I like to read and contribute to where I can. I want to know where all the clowns that were saying on this thread that the world was going to end because BMD didn't have any footage out yet and that definitely meant something was very wrong and the shipping date would be missed. All I've seen so far is that a planned marketing campaign by BMD that has gone off the way they intended. They commissioned some actual filmmakers (not bloggers or camera reviewers) that make certain types of film (natural history, action sports, nature) to make some films and then they released them and the camera originals. Then they gave some cameras, complete with some boxes as if they were new to some secondary users, and whilst having them also under NDA, got them to shoot some test footage and allowed some of them to release that footage. Again. Not reviewers. Not bloggers. About a thousand reviewers and camera jockeys have done a bunch of made up comparisons and VLOGS based on existing footage. (hey I love seeing my footage being butchered by grading nerds) Think about it. No blogger or reviewer ANYWHERE has gotten a functioning camera to shoot with as far as I can tell. Because that's not what BMD want to do with their marketing of this camera. This isjust marketing 101. They need people using the cameras in the many difference specific sectors of the market will use the camera. Camera reviews aren't part of that plan. (though it hasn't stopped people doing it based on existing footage) Until it's shipping, it's their choice to give it to whomever they want. I'm tired of this entitled bullshit. I recently left a few facebook groups I was on for this camera, and I'm doing the same here. Frankly it's juvenile and I don't need the agro I sure hate explaining what should be obvious. There's no slight. BMD have a marketing department and they have a plan and it doesn't involve forums, bloggers or camera reviewers. That's not a snub, that's just them marketing the product in the way that they see fit. JB

An oldie but a goodie... Takumar 55mm wide open. Frame grab from ML Raw but I shot this in 720p Raw on my 5D3 out of curiosity. I am also messing around with DaVinci Resolve's RGB Mixer in B&W. It seems so intuitive to pull a dramatic B&W look.

  24. ...a 10mm lens with the 4x crop and a XL speed booster would come out to about 24mm (1.9 base crop multiplied by .64 by the speed booster multiplied by 10 for.the lens and multiplied by 2 for the 120fps crop.)
    1 point
  25. Its the same as the Production camera and if I remember correctly my Red. Raw is always what the sensor gives you uncompressed (or lossless). So to be able to give you 1080p it has to cut that out for you. Or give it to you downsampled (prores). The good part is that BMDs in body downsample is better than what for example Adobe gives you in post. Thats one of the reasons why 4K isn't always sharper and clearer on youtube than HD. There is HD and HD as well as 4K and 4K. So even if you don't get raw 1080p I suspect you will get one helluva HD file.

  27. Yes, it is highly subjective, people shoot differently and already have some of that stuff. As far as batteries go, I use those Canon batteries all of the time, and although the Wasabi are decent alternatives, they do not last as long as the original Canon batteries which are $60 a pop. With the Micro, I was getting less than 45 minutes a battery, but the Micro didn’t have a screen, so even if the camera offers better battery life, there is still a screen to power, so I would expect 45 minutes or less... just something to think about. As far as ISOs, yes there is an entire range of ISO, but the hit in DR is the issue. If you’re losing a stop or two between the native ISOs... this has been true for the Pocket and the Micro as well. So for me, this is a two ISO camera. Granted having that 3200 ISO is an amazing option. Obviously there is a fair amount of assumption going on here on my part but based on previous BM cameras in the same price point, I think these are fair assumptions to make. Right, I can live with the 120p 4X crop in ProRes, but a 4X crop in 1080p Raw... IDK. For me, this camera was going to be mostly a ProRes camera for both 1080p and 4K. And then if I wanted to shoot Raw, it would be 1080p, which I always did with the Pocket and Micro, it was so refreshing to be able to shoot it with SDXC cards.
    1 point
  28. I think he meant shooting 120fps is also 4x crop. But yes, all 1080 raw options will be 4x as well as 120fps Prores options.

Some of these look like shot on a phone in terms of aliasing, overprocessing, bad dynamic range, lack of texture etc... I would rather get the Fuji X-T3 or BM Pocket 4K which look way more organic/filmic or even wait for the Panasonic full-frame offering.

  34. Is that a jab at BMD? Announcing it exactly 6 months ahead of release? Unfortunetely, I was thinking of waiting to see what this camera is all about, but having heldback on upgrading for a few months already, I can't afford another 6 months. By then, someone else will announce their next camera and the waiting game will start again. Reminds me of 'Oh The Places You'll Go'. You can get so confused that you'll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place. The Waiting Place... ...for people just waiting. Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or the waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow. Everyone is just waiting. Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for the wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting. NO! That's not for you! Somehow you'll escape all that waiting and staying You'll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing.

  36. This is the post what clearly explains why you dont get invites to any brand anymore. Childish. John's post are perfectly reasonable, Blackmagic dont want comparisons against other cameras, they want to provide enjoyable images and emotions with the camera. Have you see the parachute footage from Eos R? It's all about smiling people enjoying the moment in the sunset. You want to capture the feeling, and we can provide you a tool for that, this is the message. Not low light noise comparisons.

Thanks, yes all are frames from the D750 in Standard with very little adjustment. Haven't regretted going back at all from Sony. If I ever need 4K I'll rent, otherwise this is plenty good for personal projects. Going to put my money into lighting at this point. Also, having the focal range covered from 17mm to 200mm is a relief in a way, I know I wont be missing any range I could want to shoot with for a narrative.

Finally collected the full set of Nikon primes zooms. All have fantastic contrast, color and sharpness. They vignette, but I think that just makes the images pop even more. I've been moving away from low contrast looks. 24-70 17-35 70-200 I used the IS on the 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. Both had very smooth VR performance for me in video and a nice warm look. I do not know how well they perform on adapters.

A few from the Minolta MD 35-70mm f3.5 zoom adapted to M and then T/L mount. I was going to buy this lens in its Leica R guise but it was a bit too a rough condition even for me so got this one instead for 15% of the price and 200% of the condition. I'm going to A/B it against the Contax Zeiss 35-70mm that was another one of my robbery spree finds in Japan.
