Don't underestimate Nikon's flat profile. Mattias Burling had estimated 2014's D750 Flat profile DR at +13 stops: These 2018 Z series BSI sensors should push out the same if not better DR internally..

  6. I think in support of that, if you look at the G9 flickr pool then you can see a big difference from what I imagine is a very similar camera to the GH5 but just in the hands of more predominantly still image creators. The first page of the GH5 pool that I looked at was nothing to write home about. Unless you were writing home to say that you weren't going to buy it.

Jesus, Don watch the video. Maybe BM was exaggerating their claim with the BMCC. Who the hell knows? But Mattias’ video clearly shows how great the Nikon Flat Profile is. Check out his 5 reasons to Buy a D750... in the woods shot, with Gunpowder backlit by the setting sun, on most cameras, he would have been entirely silhouetted but the detail he pulled out on Gunpowder’s face just proves the DR capabilities of Nikon’s Flat Profile.

  13. Pretty sweet 10-bit 4:2:2 colors demonstrated here. Slow-mo seems pretty sharp / alias free & AF face tracking does good job on the gimbal (ibis?) shot. My Fuji system might be getting the axe soon..

Actually if Nikon claims the cameras have 12 stops in video, I would guess it's a little less than 12 stops.

Cheers. I'm not sure the stall selling the "Here I am with General Franco" framed picture was doing much trade though.

  17. I have the GH5 and the Sony RX1RII and in my opinion the level of details and dynamic range on the RX1RII is on a completely different level. With the GH5 I have to nail the shot to get it right, with the RX1RII I can miss the exposure completely, mess up the framing and shoot straight into the sun and still get decent results in post. It's hard to have fun shooting pictures with the GH5 when I'm using to something better. The strength of the GH5 is that it's able to put all of it's picture quality into it's video, which means that the "6K" video mode is very close to it's capabilities in photo mode. The great advantage of the GH5 is therefore if you need high framerate photography. It's also nice to have a non-intrusive telephoto lens with stabilization.

  18. Yeah, whoever that guy is he sounds like a right dick Its promising actually that they've enabled it in the GX9 as it will need to be selectable from the app which makes it possible. I won't be anywhere near one of these cameras for a while but I'll certainly be interested in checking it when I see one.

  20. Because the Z6 and Z7 have PDAF on sensor, D850 uses CDAF with video - with the crappy results that we all know. And imagine that for the APS-C ones Nikon releases a second version of the F mount adapter with a speedbooster integrated on it. Would be awesome and probably a major selling point. Never will happen, though.

  21. "One thing I did not mention is battery life. The battery read 44% at the end of our shooting which included 500 or so photos, setting up the menus as well as filming for close to 20 minutes in full frame 4k. Not sure if that is good or bad just yet but a grip is something I will def be using with two batteries." That is a massive improvement over the US Nikon site ratings info. Looks like the Japanese site rating (85 minutes of video) is more accurate. That is quite excellent news as battery life was a massive blow in the announced specs..

I'm on a bit of an M mount acquisition exercise at the moment and picked up a used Voigtlander 15mm Super Wide Heliar III f4.5 a couple of weeks ago. I've only used it for stills thus far but I'm going to mount it put it on my A6500 and see what happens, though there is a native E mount version as well. First impressions are that its a good performer and its an especially decent focal length on APS-C (these are from a Leica T) if you are using it for street or run and gun stuff as you can set it to f8 and have everything in focus from 1m. The hood isn't removable but it does have a 58mm filter thread so you can add ND. Usual nice Voitglander build quality and, of course, it is very compact, especially for a lens that will also cover full frame.

  24. It does offer a lossless 1.5 crop mode in 4k though. Less so with the 'Pro' becaujse it has a variable aperture lens. The 'zoom' is fixed aperture. Over at Mavicpilots.com, quite a few people are already saying their Mavic 2 has shipped.

Drones are becoming like tripods - its expected that you have one. However... when everyone is doing something its important to pivot. For example - Gimbals - got one, love it - but 90 % of the time my edelkrone slide has more impact and use in the edit. Its more precise but also has a different look to what everyone else is doing. Same with Drones - apart from my industrial progress shoot clients I generally only use them as a real quick intro and outro shot - and the shot has lost so much of its impact due to oversaturation of drone footage from everywhere. Maybe its time to go back to static shots? The great news in all of this gear chasing - STORY and engagement are King (as they have always been) - dont expect clients or audiences to be wowwed by your drone footage anymore (like they were back in 2014) - its just another angle now and the edit had better have a reason to use it. Having said all of that - motion is great for creating 3 dimensionality in shots - and there are great opportunitites to use this for 3d motion capture to embed shots into your flying camera footage.

    Insta360 One

A 360 camera may be a much better second camera than a GoPro actually, so I think that's actually a good idea. A 360 camera will probably control exposure via shutter speed and you won't be able to put NDs on it, and will therefore have very short exposures. This combined with the fact it's 360 means that you can stabilise in post and it will probably be completely fine even if someone bumps the setup. The ability to choose framing after the fact also means you not only have the variety of shots to choose from but you can ensure that the camera and operator never get in frame. My recommendation would then be to put it up higher so that the angle that the camera/operator will be included in will be a lot less and you'll be able to use wider shots. You only have to hold a camera a tiny bit above head level and it looks like drone footage, so there's that too. Low bit-rate 4K spread across 360 degrees makes footage pretty grainy so you want to use the widest shots you can, so the further away from the operator it is the more unobstructed field of view you will have to play with. Best of luck - it sounds like it would actually make a pretty flexible B-cam. I hadn't thought about it in this way either, so this conversation is useful to me too.

  28. "I don’t even want to be part of a conversation where the merits of medium format are in dispute. It is a pointless waste of time." Oh I dunno.... I think there are very legitimate reasons to not consider using medium format! Even if their prices dropped to a half, or even a quarter of what they are now.

  29. Yeah, a Z6 body/evf/lcd would make a badass a6500 competitor. Though crop version would look funny with the smaller sensor in the big mount. But APS-c is where the volume lies, eventually they will enter that space, hopefully sooner rather than later. I get cashing in on the high-end, high margin hype, but there needs to be a couple bodies for the masses and they need to keep cranking out new product to hog the spotlight. Thom Hogan said they have a couple DX prototypes. He also said something I haven't seen elsewhere, the lens focus rings can be programmed for something else like aperture when the camera is in AF. If the 14-30 was available now, I'd probably give the Z6 a serious look when it starts shipping in a couple months. Fortunately for my credit card (and my marriage) we won't see it until sometime next year. Till then, I'll definitely rent one when Lens Rentals has them available. That 28/1.4 is calling me though... Chris

Are you going to attach it to a pistol grip and use it like a normal camera?
    1 point
  31. I often wonder that too.... It is all about your connections, and who you know! Anyway, seems like there is an option to turn down mid range sharpening? I'm experiencing GAS so bad when watching the videos about the Z6! But yeah, no harm in waiting for secondhand bodies to appear. Plus as I don't really buy into the whole "bigger must be always better" argument, I'm also keen to wait and see what Nikon will do for DX mirrorless! Imagine a camera identical to the Z6 but with an APS-C sensor but for say US$1.2K? That would be dreamy. Same price as an a6500, but 10x better. (20x better if they give us a flip out screen!) Although, I'll keep an eye on eBay prices for D750/D7500/D500, I might possibly just give in and buy another DSLR instead. But no rush, sound gear purchases is burning up plenty of bags of cash of mine instead! Lectrosonics SR/SMQV/etc are bloody expensive. I agree, a "slim" battery grip (but doesn't even have a vertical grip! As it is a "slim" version) would be a handy innovation for many mirrorless shooters who just want a bit more time between battery swaps. Actually, this seems like something a third party supplier could innovate and supply? (if Nikon doesn't lock you out with a firmware update... gah) Imagine if you could buy slim battery body extensions ("body extensions" seems like a better name, than "grips" as it wouldn't even have a vertical grip) for say $75 a pop then you could happily buy say three of these to get you through a day.

  32. 10 years on, Panasonic should really be leading things out front. I don't know whether it is down to a smaller budget, or Panasonic upper-management not allowing total freedom, but it's sad that Sony and Nikon are out front when Panasonic were the ones to pioneer the entire market, at a time others were too scared to make the jump. If anything dude, you are the one turning into a fanboy.

Manual focus. It will want to be spectacular for its price (assuming it will be very dear indeed). I do think it could end up a cult classic like the original 58 1.2 Noct. Sony users can at least use manual focus 50 f0.95 if they want at a lot lower price even if not as good. I wish Nikon would allow others access to the mount.

    GH5 for Photography?

I own the GH5, Fuji x-t20, and the Sony A7Rii and have used the Sony a lot for stills, the GH5 as my main photo camera on a few trips, and the Fuji from time to time when I want to throw a small and light camera in a bag. In my opinion the GH5 is a fine photo camera. Lately when weight and space has been an issue I've been finding myself selecting the GH5 to do both photo and stills as a compromise, as it does both jobs to a high standard. If you're looking for pure quality then the A7Rii is on another level. There's something incredibly smooth and organic about the image. Creamy and deep. When I have to take photos professionally I use the Sony. But for personal use the GH5 is fine, although it feels more crispy and contrasty and perhaps over-sharp. It feels more digital and Panasonic-y where as the Sony could almost be medium format in terms of its quality. The Sony is also great in low light, where as the Panasonic crushes the blacks a lot even in raw, and needs more light. Personally, in my limited experience, I'd put the GH5 and Fuji almost on the same level. The Fuji has naturally nicer colour and perhaps better dynamic range, but I don't feel there's a massive difference. In terms of ergonomics and ease of shooting the GH5 is probably the best and fits in the hand nicer.

  38. Actually two 11 bit values turns into a 22 bit value, which is then processed as 16bit lin internally, not 14bit. It’s then log encoded as a 12bit once it’s encoded into a DNG or ProRes. Alexa is the same, but two 12bit values turned into a 24bit value then down to 16bit. I’ve long felt bit depth is the most important part of the digital imaging chain, not resolution. JB

  39. I found that @IronFilm here is very patient and civilized in explaining his arguments about an special videomaking case. But I can't say the same when someone start discussion with sentences as "You do know what you have typed here is complete nonsense?!" and "Complete and utter foolishness!!!" (with double and triple exclamation) and than pompously calling logic as exclusive friend in the narrow, totally practical case of usage with many included variables. Actually, from my life experience I found silly to keep up discussing when opponents feel themselves so powerful in logic and knowledge that immediately called my view nonsensical and foolish as first argument - rather, I feel it as some sort of causeless aggression. But, of course that's just me, hypersensitive :)

  40. Its amusing to see people call any ILC that has no mirror in front of sensor, a Sony clone! Leave Nikon aside for a moment, most of the new tech or ideas introduced in this industry in recent years, didn't come from Sony. PDAF wasn't Sony invention, they licensed it. and Canon delivered a better version. IBIS was also a licensed tech, and Olympus created a much better iteration of it. EVF wasn't new thing, and Leica was the one who showed how the next generation of it should be. in optics, m4/3 members were true pioneers, and for large sensor glass, it was Sigma who made the bold actions. In video, most of what we now consider as must-have features, determined by Panasonic. In color science, and also the joy of photography, Fuji was the real hero. Sony is good in two segments: making sensors, and marketing. Both unrelated to its imaging unit.

  41. At $1999 i find the Z6 extremely compelling.. however at $3400 i find they could have added at the very least an extra card slot to the Z7. Something tells me an Z8/9 will probably be the 'pro' models in a year or two time. As annoying as it is, they've clearly left some parts out like mode dial, AF switch, lock image, dual card slots etc to segment their DSLRs from MILCs. Nikon may not have a cine cam line to protect but they do have a DSLR one.. As to comparison with Sony A7 line.. well the weather sealing, LCD/EVF resolution, top OLED display, 2 front function buttons, dedicated iso button, grip, touchscreen menus, right-hand menu button etc.. do set it apart ergonomically and build wise. Add to that 10-bit 4:2:2 out, Nikon color science & potentially superior IBIS and it's a slam-dunk to me. Canon are going to have to go all out if they plan on taking lead now..

I've tried this type of rig and there are a few issues. The first issue is that the wide angle of the GoPro makes it difficult to mount so that it can't see the lens or the shotgun mic that are also sticking out the front, let alone your hand playing with the zoom / focus rings. The second issue is that a second angle is most useful to cut to when something bad happens to the first angle, but if they're mounted together and someone bumps the camera (or some other movement issue) then footage from both cameras are bad at that point. If you don't need continuity editing and only need a second focal length then it might be ok. It would depend on the particular setup. If I was shooting with a tripod then I'd be tempted to mount the GoPro either quite a lot higher up than the main camera (for events perhaps) or maybe 30cm or so to the side, so they'd still be sharing a single tripod. This would mean that when you cut between them the angle is a bit different and it doesn't just look like a jump cut with a bit of a crop thrown in to try and cover it up.

  47. Ah yes, the ultimate comeback. Fanboys with panties in a bunch. How about fanboys where the penny hasn't dropped that this is at best a Sony clone. I thought Nikon was a great innovator? Where is it? I though Nikon were so much better for pros? Where are the dual slots? I thought they had so much better ergonomics because they don't make 'toys', yet no one can actually point to them? Shouldn't they have a CLEAR physical advantage that users can point to? Not some ineffable 'oh but Nikon...' These cameras look fine, nothing more. There is nothing new, at all, about them. Other than it's a mirrorless Nikon that doesn't have a piddly 1" sensor in it. That's not innovation. Sorry what are you selling here? Some marketing fluff. Goodo. Now I know that Nikon wants you think the EVF is their own. Excellent. How is magnification sharp? That doesn't even make sense. Feel of an optical viewfinder? So when Sony had the exact same viewfinder on the A9 nearly 2 years ago and all the Nikon fanboys claimed that EVFs were rubbish and nothing like their (relatively speaking: poor) OVFs are going to now claim they are so magical? I find it ironic that Nikon talked about their innovation and 100 years of experience in their teaser videos and started with a shot of their S series (abandoned mount, but Nikon don't do that kind of thing which was a clone of the Contax rangefinders. Now their experience and innovation and they're launching a Sony clone. I guess that's just their way...

For the point I was making that all sensor sizes have their own set of pros/cons worth discussing. (and of course any con falls under "disputing the merits of...").
