  1. Standard -5/-5/-5/-5 however as you can see the shadows are far away from being crushed. this ia due to the tiffen ultra contrast filter. Together with filmconvert this combo really sings, because filmconvert lowers the shadows in such a way that you only need to adjust the highlights and some subtle skintone correction.

  3. To sum it up: Voigtländer 25mm at f1.4-2.0 Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3 Filmconvert GH4 Profile, standard setting. Best results with the FJ Super x400 or KD P400 preset. Yet, those shots dont had any filmconvert applied.

  5. @Inazuma It is probably too late, but here is some recordings I did comparing the Panasonic LX100, G7, GX80, and Olympus OMD E-M5II. Skin tones and the X-Rite Video Colour Checker Passport and DSC Labs Colour Chart. All were set to custom white balance using an expo disk before recording was started - the light was usual UK grey overcast. The lens used for the GX80, G7, and OMD E-M5 II was the Panasonic 12-35/2.8 zoom at 35mm at f2.8, ISO 200, 1/50s shutter. The lens on the LX100 is the fixed 24-75mm (equivalent) lens shot at 75mm (eq), f2.8, ISO 200, 1/50 shutter. The Panasonic cameras were all shot at 4k 100Mbps and the Olympus using the 1080p ALL-I 77 Mbps codecs. The video was downscaled to 1080p in FCPX. The Panasonic profiles were "Natural 0, -3, -4, 0" and "Standard -5,-5,-5,-5" The Olympus profiles were "Natural 0, -2, 0", "Muted -2, -2, -2" and "Flat Video" profiles. 6. Hallo all, I had a holiday in Greece, and right before I left I could pic up a GX80 in my camera store. I really like the small form factor for travelling. That's al so the reason why I use mainly 4/3 lenses with it. So for my kind of use its a great little camera. In the link is a little piece I made with it, no colour grading are post stabilisation.

  10. I didn't ignore it at all. Monitoring the hack process, opened a dedicated forum for it, took my NX1 to London in February and used it at BVE, shot with the SLR Magic PL anamorphics on the NX1 in Brighton and did a big blog post about it. The NX1 is as good in 2016 as it was in November 2014 and it will remain so for the next 2 years as well. Absolutely fantastic future proof camera. The 120fps looks improved from the first firmware in 2014. Quality looks similar to the X Pro 2. Not free of moire but nice and detailed.

  12. Well, it looks like the Arri Alexa 65 has some competition. Panavision have revealed a RED-Weapon-like cinema camera which shoots 8K from a full frame 41 x 21 sensor, to r3d RAW format. Read the blog post

  13. So, I went out today and tried Raw 3:1 for the first time... And used Resolve for the first time as well. Resolve automatically puts into a Rec709 color space? Unsure how to change that, or if I'm supposed to? I'll have to watch some tutorials. Anyway, here's a screengrab from my very first attempt...

  14. Oh the crazy Japanese. Oh wait, Apple does it too. Oh wait, so does any consumer electronics company. It's called economics in the 21st century, with mass production, globalization, etc. Ah, the days when you had two sets of clothes, one pair of shoes, and it cost you 6 months salary to buy that "television?" You're demanding a perfect camera so you won't have to buy another camera again for the rest of your life. If you want that bargain, then you'd have to make it profitable enough for that company. Buy that Alexa. No? Then you have to deal with compromises and shop at h&m like the rest of the masses and follow the seasonal trends. Look, even apple is struggling because the 5s is good enough for too many people. Ironically, their phones became too good, satisfying consumers as well as pushing their competitors. So Apple now has pressure because consumers are spending less money than expected. That's the power you as a consumer wield. These are consumer electronics companies, and you are the consumer market. There's really only one way to clearly communicate to the company. Buy or don't buy. That's why blackmagic is a welcome addition. Competition lowers prices and drives innovation. There will never be that "perfect" camera if you have the purchasing power of a consumer. Technological advances and expectations will always keep you wanting.

  15. They released the a6300 profile today. Did they say how many they were going to do or is it a long shot since the nx1 came in 2nd over that camera in voting?

  17. Seems outside of Japan, camera makers dont like established sensor size standards. what fab company on earth make 41mm wide CMOS sensor? Its meaninglessly bigger than 36 and pitifully smaller than photographic 54 and miserably far from cinematic 65.

  18. I use the Tiffen Ultra Contrast 3. keep in mind that those shors are out of camera, so no grading with filmconvert had be applied! I am in the middle of my trip, so i cant give you a graded example. the filter doesnt really like direct sunlight, the contrast is then really really low, you have to keep that in mind. Personally, i however like the look occasionally. Check out the part with the ferry (1:09) for an example about this sunlight effect in this clip: I agree with RWR, I learned with Sony cams the hard way that auto white balance does not really work. Now i also found AWB on the GX80 not that good so I dial in my kelvin values. Just use 5600k whenever daylight is available and dial in something in 3000-4000k whenever you have artifical light. Surely not the perfect approach, but for run&gun this works well.

  22. I just posted something similar with regards the nx1 the other day. There is definitely certain scenes that gain much more from 1/40, and certain that work well at 1/50...I find that my 5d at 1/50 has much nicer movement than my nx1 at 1/50 ... I find that 1/40 on the nx1 gets me closer to the footage 1/50 5d footage

  23. Hey guys check this out! Apparently UHD 60p is now possible!!! 1D(N)x-ii in all of our pockets. http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4011837 I really hope this is legit. I downloaded the clip and threw it into premiere just to see, and it does appear to be a true 3840x2160 file playing back at 60p. This is huge.

  24. I've never posted on this forum before but I read it quite often, and I thought I should finally contribute since I have actual useful content this time that nobody's actually definitively confirmed. I have the Panasonic GX85, the US version. I have it in my hands and it's a beauty. But let's just get straight to the point. 1. In AVCHD and in 4K, there is no 29 minute recording time limit. There still is a weird 29 minute (and 4GB) limit for FHD/HD/VGA MP4 clips, but none for AVCHD and 4K MP4. Part of me didn't actually believe it, so I took a fresh battery, a fresh 64 GB card, put the camera into 4K video mode, IBIS on, and just hit record. 1 hr 29 min 9 sec later, the card filled up, and the camera stopped recording, but the battery still had one bar left, and the camera never quit recording on me. It was warm, but not hot to the touch. It was indoors and at night, however, but I'm just telling you, recording long clips is well within the realms of possibility with this camera. I'm actually quite excited about being able to record indefinitely in AVCHD as well. When I'm recording a long event, it's not that important to get the best quality, but it's important to be able to get SOMETHING. I can run this camera up on a tripod, set it to AFC mode at 1080/30p 24Mbps AVCHD, hit record, and come back some time later and know that it got SOMETHING for last hour and a half. AVCHD can be annoying to work with, but a lot of consumer-level camcorders still use the format, so in effect, I'm getting a very capable large sensor camcorder to go along with my high-end 4K shooter. No complaints at all. 2. And that's not all, folks. I've had a GH4 and one of my least favorite things about filming 4K in the GH4 (and GX8 and G7) is that stupid 4 GB file size limit thing. So when you're shooting 4K, every six and a half minutes, there's a new 4GB file. But that's history now. On the GX85, if you use an SDXC card (basically anything bigger than 32 GB), the camera will give you one single monolithic file. I record a lot of musical performances, so long takes are kind of standard in my regular usage. I am not joking when I say that my editing process for 4K just became 40% happier. According to the manual, a file will split if "the continuous recording time exceeds 3 hours and 4 minutes or if the file exceeds 96 GB." Since the battery can't even last that long, for all intents and purposes, GX85 will give you single takes in single files. I expected the IBIS and the 4K and the beautiful design and all the other stuff. But I honestly didn't expect these two features. I really thought they were going to burden us with a stupid 29 minute limit in all settings (I assumed that and ranted about in other forums, I feel dumb now, oops) and never in my wildest dreams did I actually think they'd solve the 4GB issue with this camera, but they did. It's safe to say, this is the best MFT mirrorless shooter right now. GH4, you had a good run, but GX85 is the king. This is a true hybrid shooter. And at about half the price as a GH4 when you consider the cute pancake zoom has decent resale value. As an aside, GX8 buyers have got to feel a little burned by the GX85. I'm sure a lot of them would love large file support and 5-axis IBIS.

    1DC vs 1DX II Shootout

There are not many people I know that shoot with a c100 or c300 that would trade in for DSLR format factor even if they gave 20 stops of DR in compressed raw format. NDs, XLRs etc and a good image are what sells it Also worth noting the $1500 XC10 has c-log.... so it is not strictly a price separator

  26. They should apply to NX1 but involve EXTREMELY dangerous changes. DO NOT attempt to do them on your own unless you know what you are doing - a mistake WILL require you to send the camera for service. Why? Because you change a library that is required by di-camera-app. For 2.5K you also change the di-camera-app itself. A mistake and di-camera-app will crash leaving you without user interface. So just don't. Wait a bit please

  27. FWIW, we seem to now have a method to make bitrate mods permanent (in hibernation image) so independent of Bluetooth and similar. But this currently applies only to bitrate mods (but should apply to 2.5k on NX500 as well). Other mods still depend on Bluetooth. We are all working on further improvements. See here for more information https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/Permanent_bitrate_mods.md

  28. I looked at Canon too before buying the GX80, but quickly found that clearly innovation and progressing their lower-end DSLR's weren't their thing. They've somehow been able to market virtually the same camera ever since the 50D- absolutely brilliant for making massive amounts of money! That's not saying they can't make nice images, because they can... but you hit the nail on the head with the word "soft." They decided that details in video should only be for their higher-end cameras. I look at the GX80 and it screams "2016," newer Canons in this price range scream "2010."

  29. I had a go with your footage - for which I can't thank you enough. I am pretty satisfied with what I am seeing here. Well, I only spent a few minutes on it but so far the image feels very similar to my BMPCC. That first image with the girl standing in front of the river, I think it's just a matter of a few unfortunate circumstances. When I checked that in 4K the focus seemed off, the highlights were clipping a bit and there's some ghosting around them too. Hard to pull a decent grade on it. Actually it is always hard to work with skin tones if they are in the shadows with a strong back light. I found the rest of the shots very agreeable, for example this one I could drag in any directions: I intentionally pulled up the luminance on the oranges and yellows, to separate the guy from the background better, but I could have easily made them more contrasty. This one is a good scenario, you have the black asphalt and the blue sky, easy to make the skin tones pop without changing the rest of the shot, unlike the other one with the girl where the colour of the sand/rocks were in a similar range to her skin.

  30. I noticed very high shutter speeds (fountain scene- water was too crisp for 1/50 or 1/60)... I think that would make it look unnatural. Globally, it was some nice footage. On the GX80, people have remarked about some stuttering during a pan, but I haven't seen it that much in my own footage. Neither did I see the correlation between focus modes and jitter. I saw it more with the mixing of IBIS/DUAL IS and Digital stabilization.

  33. I get what you're saying. The FS700 is really nice to use because of the slow motion, internal ND, XLR, and the 4k. The sony FS7 seems to nail color a lot better and there's some magic cameras like the Sony F3 that just have beautiful color. I use the c300ii at work, the 5D raw for personal stuff, and I just recently picked up a micro cinema camera as well. The only camera I struggle with color wise is the FS700. It doesn't matter how flat the image or how many bits I am supposedly getting... The first frame below is 4K FS700, the second is 1080p Black Magic Micro. I just can't get a film look out of the Sony. It always makes skin look too white, and if I warm up the scene, everything gets murky looking. I have some 4K footage currently uploading if anyone is interested in grading it, I would love to see your results. That being said, the Sony FS700/7Q is not a bad investment. I doubt the value will drop too far below what it is currently. It is probably good for another 4/5 years, which is insane because it's already 4/5 years old. Edit: Link to raw footage if anyone wants it. A bunch of 4k/60p in various lighting. https://we.tl/xE0joWj5Tw

  34. As someone who has yet to install the hacks...it would be nice for Andrew to install them and spotlight these developments with a proper article. You can find tons of information / reviews of the ML hacks for Cannon...all of this for the NX1 is found on two forums. Since I also purchased Andrew's NX1 guide, I think that should be updated with at least a summary of the possibilities that are now possible and how that can lead to a better image.

  35. I would rather not take sides. I support what both of you are working on and at this point they are quite different mods that appeal to different peoples needs. Vasile is working on a lean and clean mod with only a few features(right now its just bit-rate) and Kinoseed is working on squeezing as much as possible out of these two amazing cameras (witch to date has been amazing what he has been able to get out of them). Having said that It doesn't really matter what bill gates stole from Steve jobs or what Steve stole from bill gates they both have two different products for two different demographics. Besides I would hope that if someone comes up with a better way of doing something or something super useful the other would use it as well. You guys are both publishing as open source don't forget. Full disclosure, All I really care about at this time is the bit-rate hack so I am leaning towards vasile's stripped down mod at this point in time but I really like what kinoseed is doing as well. As stated above my preference would be a world were everyone could get along and work together to exchanging ideas, even if they are working on separate projects/mods. unfortunately I know that is not really the world we live in .

  36. Not going to defend my own work (beyond what I wrote above) since I will be accused I am partial to it and that I would twist things to defend it. Please look it over yourself on github and make your own opinion. And/or ask someone else to do it for you or help you do it. I will let my work posted on github advocate my position.

  37. There a lot of public comments on dpreview from KS that are offensive to me - I chose not to respond to them because I am a long time member of that forum and do not want to start a flame war there which would endanger my membership. I read them at the beginning but not for a good while. Now I see this here. Well, I've had it. Having said that, @Andrew Reid, I apologize for disturbing the peace on your property and promise to not do it again. I am just asking you to try to understand and overlook this one-time digression. Thanks and kind regards.

    Where can I get a New NX1?

Yeah the NX500 is a great little B camera, especially good for stills and timelapses now that the hack has enabled silent shutter, which almost acts kind of like a pseudo-ibis in a way as well, since there is never any shutter shock, shutter speeds can be set lower than usual and still get sharp photos. The 4k crop is pretty annoying though, but can also be pretty convenient. A tiny, stabilized lens like the 16-50pz can be pretty versatile switching between 1080 and 4k to take advantage of the crop. Something to be aware of also is that there is no UHD 24p, you have to go up to the DCI 4k for 24p which makes it slightly annoying matching with the NX1.

  39. Tungsten vs LED... umm, like always it depends on workflows... cableless mobility and low heat are the big ones for me (my tungsten lights are rotting in the cupboard). LED cri is up there now, and running something like an Aputure 120T on a V-lock battery makes a lot of sense to me. The days of... hiding cables/ endless sauna sessions/ wearing gloves all the time/ having someone at the fusebox/ using generators... are over, and I don't miss them at all. Higher price seems like the only true "Con" for the latest LEDs, but I think they worth every penny. That's my two cents.

  40. Messing with the A7R II - good, but I would wait if you can till the A7S II - rolling shutter issues. Also save some cash. Here's my receipe that I'm liking: COLOR MATRIX - Pro, not s gamut - reds feel more red COLOR GAMMA - CINE4, not slog - cleaner highlights. Slog2 looks weird with an 8 bit codec how it gets noisy in highlights Black Level: 0 Black Gamma > Range: Middle , Level: -3 Knee > Mode: Auto , Auto Set > Max Point: 95 , Sensitivity: Mid Colore Mode: Pro Saturation: +8 Color Phase -2 Color Depth > R+1, G-1, B+2,, C-2, M-1, Y-3 Detail > Level, -5 Adjust > Mode; Manual, V/H Balance: -2, B/W Balance Type3, Limit: 0, Crispening:0, hi_light Detail: 0 White balance > Manual > Grid setting B 1 (one to the left) You don't have to follow it perfectly, but overall it can get to some stunning results. And the secret to any log recording is post. Use film convert. filmconvert.com. Or impulz luts. Select slog 2 - modify it - less contrast - less of a curve since it's less flat as s log 2 I used Film Convert Arri Alexa Log C profile for grading. FilmConvert setting is Arri Alexa as the camera. logC. film stock is Fuji Film 8543 Vivid. color 93. curve 100. size 35mm full frame. grain 0. But just mess around - find what you like. Have fun! And everyone post your own. Together we can help each other improve. That's what it's all about - using the Hive to get better. Get knowledge, give knowledge.

  41. IMO, the '1/50th rule' is a greatly overrated rule.  And taken far too seriously in the dslr film making world.  I have no problems with shooting 1/25th of a second if I need the extra stop of exposure.  for those pedantic about following a rule, but not with the fortune of shooting with controlled lighting or an alexa, 1/40th is gonna yield much better results than 1/50th IMO
