  1. One of the so many reasons I enjoy so much EOSHD forum is that I learned to wait and guess the moment when topic as "Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output" will provoke new mercer's mention of 5D III and confession about lusting over cameras... made so tenderly and magically sweet, that I feel quite normally that all topics are in fact subtopics of temporarily lusting Canon's cameras...

I think you might want to have a listen to what a used X-T20 has to say about having most of that fun for a fraction of the price.

  4. Hey before I get Sony users too riled up, my company did call me yesterday asking if we should switch our Sony mirrorless gear to Nikon Z.. Nikon may have won this battle (imo) but the mirrorless war ain't over..

  5. Basically the point is no matter what you say or prove to him: Sony > Nikon. I've already been through it once back when XH1 was announced. Back then GH5 was the holy one.

    DJI Mavic Pro II

There is a good chance this is a line skipping or pixel binning process. It's hard to say for sure though. We know that Sony has created a high tech "full pixel readout" for their fantastic scaling engines but DJI does not buy Sony SOC's. DJI buys Sony sensors and uses Ambarella image processors on Phantom and Mavics. The original Mavic Pro used a dinosaur Ambarella A9 processor that has the absolute worst temporal noise reduction algorithm. It SEVERELY scrubbed the life out of everything below middle grey it's temporal analysis artifacts caused a "pulse" every 15 frames. Shadows are 90% washed, scrubbed and flattened SEVERELY! (a lot of people blamed 60mbp/s h.264 when it was really that disgusting noise reduction circuit to blame) Total junk chip that dates back to the GoPro 3. The Phantom 4 Pro uses the Ambarella H1 and it's pretty good. The Mavic Air used the Ambarella H1 and doesn't suffer that same noise reduction Hell that the Mavic Pro does and gives you 100mbp/s too. Today we have the Ambarella H2, H22 and H3 chips which are far more powerful than the H1 now. It's going to be interesting to see what video processor that DJI used for these new Mavics. The Ambarella H3 can do 4k at 120fps and 8K at 30p! It's very possible that DJI is making these motherboard designs usable for the new Phantom 5 too. This allows them to buy H3 or H2 chips, do all the programming work together and only activate features the need for each model and leave others hidden. This saves lots of programming man hours. To see this HORRIBLE Ambarella A9 vs Ambarella H1 noise reduction lab analysis comparison, check out my video here. I think it will answer a lot of people's questions about DJI Mavic image quality problems. It's NOT 60mbps vs 100mbp/s like we have all though for years. https://youtu.be/5WDc9PKCDm0?t=1m30s CT p.s....DJI is using H.265 HEVC but they are only using "main" profile and NOT "high" profile. This means it is only using a fraction of the HEVC tool sets and calculations that are available to the full HEVC/H.265 specification. So,...the "50% gains" over H.264/AVC are reduced even further. This is a "light" or "partial" HEVC profile designed to keep calculations per second lower and easier.

    GH5 for Photography?

So so true, X-T20 must be the most desirable Fuji camera of its specific segment. @mercer I know you had the NX500, I was referring of course to its form factor and ergonomics, not the camera per se. H1 and GH5 are equal, or bigger than some full frame dSLRs. Test the actual photo quality of m43 cameras YOURSELF.

  8. Yeah obviously I’m just teasing you and I get being excited about a camera you love. When I first got my 5D3 and installed ML, I didn’t understand why everybody wasn’t shooting with it. And sure you don’t specifically say one camera is better than another but when you go into threads of cameras you’re never going to buy, and spout out specs that the camera you own has... well... you make your point. But this is just a camera forum, so I don’t care... no reason to get angry over. Love your camera... I respect that.

  10. 2. Most know-nothing DSLR soccer moms and the like got a short zoom, a long zoom, and a 50mm. Got tons of people who wanted to do their own portraits/headshots for fun or to save money. Prime lenses there. Travel photography, sold a wide fast prime to plenty of those. Same with astrophotographers. Even had one wild dude who was a serious birder and bought several brutally expensive primes, including a 500mm. Do most consumers go for zooms first? Sure. But I would not say "no one except pros use primes." In fact, working photographers are the exact people who often benefit from zooms to get critical shots, while hobbyists can pick up a more fulfilling prime, take their time, and not worry about potentially missing a paycheck moment.

    Nikon FF Mirrorless

With Nikon, it is difficult to 2nd guess their intentions for this camera and lenses to be considered for professional use, just as it is for its existing products. In theory, you might inagine that if they consider it a professional camera then it will appear on the qualifying list for NPS. https://www.nikonpro.com/ProductList.aspx It doesn't yet of course but when it's actually available I have no doubt it will do as when you take a look at the cameras and lenses (especially the DX ones) that are on the list you will find many which you would at best consider prosumer ones. There are plenty of single card slot cameras on that list too by the way. Admittedly because they use a points system you would need a fair amount of the lower end stuff to reach the 750 point threshold to qualify for membership but Nikon do acknowledge in this way that you don't have to have their most expensive equipment to be a professional photographer and receive the same benefits as those that do. Which is good for the user (as professional photography is a broad church where not everyone needs the features or build of the higher priced equipment) but bad for trying to win internet arguments.

  12. If pro photography is your main gig.. then this is definitely not going to top a D850 (or even D750) especially with adapted lens. But for hybrid/video shooting, i think Z6 is going to be the bees knees! @Mark Romero 2 1080p 120fps only in DX crop mode??? that's on Z7. Z6 won't crop.

  13. Knowing how quickly BM release updates and how much effort they're putting into development, I wouldn't be surprised if the Windows version of Resolve gets a big performance bump at some point soon. The performance differences in that video can't be explained by the hardware differences so I think they must be software optimisations. If the OP has a preference for PC then I wouldn't use those test results to recommend a complete change in computer platform. @mojo43 sorry to hear about your laptop getting taken! I keep my carry-on under the seat in front of me but I have a soft backpack and I guess if yours is har-shelled or too big it might not work.

  14. I do think that there are quite a few 'gotchas' in these specs which few people are talking about. Probably most important - in Phillip Bloom's video, he states that 4k FOV (5.7k downrezzed to 4k using the whole sensor) records in 8 bit rather than 10 bit. You can get 4k 10 bit but only in 4k HQ mode (which is essentially a 1.5x crop using half the sensor.) Now its possible that Bloom was using preproduction firmware and this might change but I doubt it (I have looked in the instruction manual but there is no mention.) This would be bad news. Either you use the full sensor and get 8 bit 4k or half the sensor (and lose a stop) and get 10 bit 4k. This isnt a dealbreaker for me but I suspect it might be for others.

    Nikon FF Mirrorless

That guy is a Moron, he has been dishing Nikon since day one in this thread. He said with absolute certainty that Nikon will never be able to produce a camera to compete with Sony Mirror Less. That was one month ago, having not seen anything, just his analysis. As we can see today he is completely wrong, they have at least matched the Sony third gen mirrotless, but in many ways outdone it. The Z6 kills the A73, better viewfinder, better LCD, 10 bit video, build quality etc. The only thing that is still contentious is the AF which DRreview who had some time with the Beta Z7 said was better than the Sony's. That's what Dpreview had to say "Autofocus in video is up there with the best. Tracking and refocusing on subjectives is intuitive and reliable... besting what Canon and Sony offer" https://***URL removed***/reviews/nikon-z7-first-impressions-review/6 And I am sure, he who has not used the camera will come to patronize us.

  16. Very good video. Cannot believe the difference between FCPX and the competition. Wether it is exporting or stabilizing etc it is just so much faster. Also I was personally very happy to make the switch from Premiere. FCPX make editing much more pleasant to me in general on top of the speed advantage.

    DJI Mavic Pro II

Wish I could afford either. ? There's some sample footage here: https://www.tomstechtime.com/dronefootage I already linked to the Mavic footage, but that link forwards to clips from the Phantom 4 and other cameras, too. The Phantom 4 Pro looks much sharper than the Mavic Pro 2 footage but it has sharpening artifacts and thin tonality. Looks bad to me by comparison. I suspect it's not a full pixel readout/downscale, or if it is then it's a low quality one. But preferences vary. To me, the Mavic looks dramatically better–like night and day. Difference between a (low end) cinema camera and dSLR as far as tonality and color are concerned. Still don't love the way green is rendered, too yellow, but it has a much better look to me overall, though preferences will vary.

    Nikon FF Mirrorless

That is absolutely crazy. That Nikons DSLR APSC kit lenses qualify with 120 points is crazy enough by itself but the new 19mm PCE tilt shift lens only scores 100 points? Given that, I am sure everything Zed will qualify!

  19. Just recently jumped to Sony with the A7III (as B camera and stills companion), but I have to say while it's a big step up from its predecessors in usability, I still haven't fallen in love with the look. Maybe it's a matter of getting it dialed in, but I'm still finding my way. I'm excited by what I see from the Nikon for video color, both with LOG and their FLAT profile. Interested to see some clips with external 10-bit, too, as I generally need at least that good for my work...and the A7 series has thus far failed to provide it. I just use manual lenses (Leica R) on adapters, so AF and powered adapters are a non-factor for me. Battery life is a question mark, but I'd probably hook up an external battery either way, as I do with my Sony. I guess my point is that evaluating these Nikons in terms of stills is interesting for hybrid shooters and to evaluate where they'll sit in the market; however, for video use, I feel like we've talked surprisingly little about the image or capabilities of these cameras beyond slamming them for perceived deficiencies compared to Sony. Point is, more full frame mirrorless that values video is good for all of us. More choices, more competition, more possibilities. After the years of begging CaNikon to join the mirrorless market with something we can get excited about, the venom here is straight up baffling.

"Lol, not quite..." Why lol I really don't understand why Panasonic didn't already hire you... such capable "hacker" will make their life easier and comfortly prolong life of GH5 to the indeed legendary period of time in regarding field of usage - they already did it with Nick Driftwood... The Lane looks to me really "amazing"... In Tilian-Cocky author really didn't spare sack with a precious grain No, I found it two month ago, but decide to post now because for some time I didn't see contribution to this one, my most favorite thread - simply I like very much talented independent people... Also, I feel a need to approve myself as proud carrier of the fresh-acquired title Fanboy! But, I'm sure you have something to note about similarity with ML and 5D III - but you still hesitate

  23. prores was never that common on consumer cameras other than blackmagic. even on sony cameras, you have to pay for that option. it's an expensive codec because of apple. so i don't understand all of the sudden this requests for prores raw. it only works with final cut at the moment and if you don't have prores, most likely you're not going to get prores raw. that's why you see proprietary codecs, xavc, avc, canon xf avc, etc

  24. I ended up getting the 5D IV. I can confirm that it does lovely 1080p out of the HDMI using the 4K mode much like the 1DC does. It is actually a really fantastic camera and the crop 'feels' just like normal S35. The AF is fantastic. The image is lovely. There are lots of improvements all round (and some not so great rolling shutter). Also love that I can record the massive internal 4K files to SD card, unlike the 1DC. Will mean I'm more likely to also use the 4K internal. Need to get real C-Log on there ASAP though to really get the most out of it though, which is annoyingly a trip to Canon. Loving the DPAF and 1080p on this and the M50. Actually the latter is growing on me.

  25. Couldn't agree more. Just needs a reality check. I also really loathe throw away comments of assumption. What do they say about assumptions? The cameras look pretty ok. Good to see there is another product on the market. Let's hope Nikon don't ditch it because it's not going so well like so many of their other products. It might end up being really exciting. But to me personally it's pretty useless without an EF adapter or AF adapter for M-Mount lenses. I have zero interest in the 3 native lenses.

  26. This thread is feeling needlessly antagonistic. New options are good, yeah?
    1 point
  27. Absolutely. I routinely got 1500+ shots off my A7S back in the day (while also using LAEA adapter) off that FW50 battery. This occurred when shooting continuously over a period of a couple hours. Turning on and off shooting bits and pieces though and the battery life was pretty average. Still people would always point at the CIPA figures for Sony (around 300 shots) and say that was the most they could muster, while also providing their own anecdotes on how long their DSLR would shoot for (not considering during live view, because that would ruin their already very strong and valid argument). I think people need to get a clue. CIPA figures are not gospel. They are how a camera performs under one set of usage. Different usage, different figures. BUT it does give us a benchmark on which to judge (but every case must come from the CIPA figures, not their own experience). Given that, the Zs will get around the same battery as the original series A7s. Blackmagic are an Australian company. So are Atomos. I've been trying so hard ? But seriously, I think the hype machine is working on overdrive on these cameras. There have been a few voices saying 'hey, maybe not so much'. It's also practically impossible for the cameras to be BAD. I just find the hype very frustrating indeed. Fanboyism is even worse! Not surprised by any of these things. All cameras suffer in low light. Really good mirrorless are no worse than really good DSLRs, maybe even better. I thought that Nikon don't copy... Oh wait no you meant they don't copy Sony (because you don't like Sony and therefore find it offensive to even consider that Nikon would copy them, despite the fact that that whole product line is a direct copy and is being launch because of Sony). Legit. Bahahahaha! So long as that isn't Sony amiright?! ? Why would you have to enable low light AF? This sounds ridiculous. There must be some major downside to having it enabled? Perhaps this camera's slow burst rate and buffer are affected even further? It isn't. But he doesn't want to say they copied Sony, or borrowed Sony's tech, because he can't stomach the idea.

  28. If a Fuji or other brand had such an issue, the reaction would be very different. Sony has an "under the carpet" mentality to various issues through the years. The first thing they did when their a6xxx overheated was to change the thermal threshold and warn you to not touch the camera, Fuji from the other hand limited the video time limit and adviced on the use of the battery grip (obviously it transfered some heat from the battery compartment further away to the grip) a minus on the spec sheet, but a more honest and respectful approach to their customers.

  32. I’m amazed at how only few people are concerned by this image streching issue ! As everybody’s always so eager to attack every manufacturer for anything. I find this ratio problem much more worrying and shocking than even overheating. Eventhough there’s lens distorsion coming into play when it comes to proportion, I find it puzzling that people let Sony go with this one... I can’t imagine myself explaining to a client why its product looks streched on this or this packshot. For me it’s the basics : having a 1:1 aspect ratio... Hope it’s gonna be fixed later with a new firmware but I need more people to complain about it I’m waiting for the A7S III anouncement before I buy anything but I seriously consider buying the A7 III, if and only if this issue get fixed (not that anyone cares!) Am I the only one shocked by the stretching thing ?

  33. It's $200 cheaper. Not exactly in a different price category. And OSS isn't a critical feature when all your bodies have IBIS. Plus, the the Zeiss 24-70/4 isn't exactly blowing the doors off for optical performance. On a separate note, Jon, I don't think anyone appreciates the condescending attitude.

  34. I ordered both Mavics (Zoom and Pro) but I can tell you one thing; This DJI claim of 13 stops for the 1/2.3 sensor and 14 stops for the 1inch-type....is a GROSS marketing lie. That is the biggest whopper that DJI had ever told. LOL!! Not even the A7S-II, FS5, FS7 or GH5-S sensors get "14 stops". (The FS7 gets close) CT

  35. I believe Mavic 2 Pro still uses Ambarella H1 chip, which limits H.265 to main profile. Also the Sony sensor IMX183CQJ doesn't support full sensor readout for video.

  36. ..in that case so are the Sony's: 35mm F2.8 is $800 35mm F1.4 is $1,600 50mm F1.4 is $1,500 also the S-line is supposed to be optimized for video with minimum breathing & noise. and with the adapter you got access to some really good affordable Nikkor glass, like the 50mm F1.2 i recently purchased for under $400

  39. Sorry to hear that. How anything is stolen on an airplane? I haven't hear that before! When I did my research, I went for one of the slim Asus gaming laptops with i7 and GTX1060, but a very good friend of mine bought a Lenovo Carbon X1, which was a lot more expensive without a dedicated GPU, but an impressive machine nevertheless. If you are not absolute about Apple, then I would just spend my money on Dell/Lenovo/Asus or even HP (they have some nice ultrabooks, but the rest are lacking).

  40. I've been using an eGPU for a few weeks now on my XPS 9560 and love it despite the extra bulk but you do have the option of doing basic stuff without it and then plugging it in when you want to get down to business. The current generations of mobile CPU's and GPU's are good enough for 4k editing in terms of processor speeds but when put in thin laptops they generate too much heat to be used for anything other than short busts of use.

  42. I don't see how the Mac is a lot better unless you want to use FCP as they are basically sharing the same hardware ( XPS slightly better in the GPU dept) and both limited by thermal design to doing non intensive tasks.

  43. Yes ( Sorry I should have mentioned that). These boxes take normal desktop size GPU's and do vary in size as some have internal PSU's. The Asus XG station pro is not too big and has an external PSU. It's also not that expensive and put in a GTX 1070 or above and resolve will fly.

  45. It should be kind of a surprise given how short sighted it is to "protect" the mount. It's not like people are going to stop buying Nikon glass. And given that the lens mount was seemingly designed for compatibility/adaptability, it's kinda contradictory. Reverse engineering is possible, obviously, but it could hurt lens performance from 3rd parties.

  47. The Swedish price is... higher ? As for scrubbing it depends on codec and what you're throwing on the footage, as you know. Just some sort of reference is that my current MSI GS63VR (4C/8T, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060) can handle 4K 25p XAVC-I from the FS7 and 4K 25p ALL-I from the GH5 without exploding. I almost never shoot Long-GOP codecs so idk how it would feel about that. I'm looking to replace my MSI as it's going to someone else in the company. Both the Blade and MSI:s GS-series of laptops are slim and light for the power they pack. Performance-wise I can find similar specs for same/lower price, but Blade for me ticks portability, small charger and big+good trackpad for those pesky flights and train rides. On a train right now doing some storyboarding on the GS63VR (with the Wacom Intuos Small BT if anyone cares :)) EDIT: Personally I've skipped eGPU's for now as I move about a lot. 3 different offices (not my own ones, of course) and a lot of time traveling means I don't wanna haul it around. If you're more static than I am, having a nicely specced 13" laptop with eGPU at your main workstation is a cool and portable option imo
