  1. I quite like the look of the Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter, and thought that I could simulate the effect in Resolve. (This conversation started in another thread but I think it deserves its own) My theory was that if you can simulate it in post then it's more flexible, so you can mix it in to taste, and its also cheaper, applies to all your lenses, can be applied to historic footage, etc.. Here's the video showing what these filters do thanks to @heart0less I've had an attempt and I'm now convinced that a completely accurate simulation is not possible. To explain why, here's an unmodified screen grab: and here's the waveform of that shot: Here are the reasons you can't do a completely accurate emulation: The Tiffen doesn't "clip". The flare from the light globe is much brighter than the flare from the hair light on the blond lady, but in the "no filter" waveform you will note that these have very similar values because the globe is clipped. Also, the flare from the globe is coloured, which presumably is from the tint of the globe, however because the waveform is clipped that colour information is lost. The Tiffen has a very wide flare pattern and will include lights outside the field of view. There don't appear to be any flares from off-camera lights in the above shot, however we can tell that the Tiffen has a very wide pattern because the level of the dark background is raised for almost the entire width of the frame but the exposure seems to be the same (by comparing the levels of the grey cards at the left of the shot). If you are using this filter and it is being hit with sunlight from any angle I think you'll get the influence of that everywhere in the shot, because although it might be very off-angle the sun is practically an infinitely bright light. However, I think we can probably make a passable attempt that might work in some situations. Here's the original of lady #1: and my simulation: Lady #2: Same simulation as above applied to lady #2: The logic of this preset is this: The Tiffen has a non-linear rolloff, so I have simulated it using blurs of two different sizes, one smaller size applied to the Highlights and a larger one applied to the Mids and Shadows. If I really wanted to get serious about it I might try converting to a Log colour space and doing the blur in there before converting back to REC709, but that's something for another day. I think that preset looks pretty good for both of these shots, but unfortunately, if we apply that preset to the main shot then we see that it definitely isn't suitable for all shots: If I play with the levels and add a third blur that is highlights only and is even smaller radius then we get a better result, but it highlights the issues I mentioned earlier: If you're going to try and use this effect in post then I would suggest a number of things: Shoot in Log and don't clip any highlights from any colour channel If you move the camera don't have any lighting going in and out of the frame (because the effect will start and stop when it does which will look very un-natural) Experiment with applying the effect before you convert from log to any other colour space (after all, a Tiffen filter gets applied before the conversion) Experiment with different blur types - I used Gaussian Blur in the above, but maybe other types will look nicer? The Mids and Shadows processing chain is the kind of "beauty" element, and the Highlights processing chain is the "flares" element, so you can mix these to your taste I hope that is useful, and that Tiffen don't object to me using clips from their video!!

  2. Hi, I've been a longtime lurker on this forum but never had a reason to contribute as I have next to zero experience in film making and cameras despite being quite interested in them. I guess you could call me an armchair enthusiast; I watch and read a lot of stuff online but haven't really acted on any of it. That said, last year I went on a trip to Japan and set myself the task of recording a bunch of footage with the intent to produce some kind of "travel" video clip. I soon realised that the process wasn't as easy as I initially thought it was going to be as I struggled to get any smooth stable shots. Just about everything I shot was marred with micro jitters and vomit inducing shakes (I was travelling light and did not bring a tripod). In an attempt to salvage my barely usable inconsistent clips, I did what all good amateurs do and threw on an excessive amount of overlays and light leaks to try and create the overly used "old school vintage film look". I know it's probably below the standards of this forum but here's the result.

  3. Damphousse you prove my point. Nobody is beatifying Trump. I agree 100%. There is no middle ground. The internet has shaped public discourse into binary positions, like 1s and 0s. People are are getting very confused to be quite honest....for example Damphousse above is conflating my opinion and endorsement. Opinions do not equal endorsements. We're going through an era of western society which is not exactly our finest, and tribalism is taking over amidst all the kerfuffle. One is profiled for one's opinions constantly. For example I might be a liberal, Trump hating centre-ground voting British person, but if you state just one fact that people might misinterpret endorsing him, you're painted into a corner. Same with jokes. Make a bad taste one and it can be used against you in your career. Today, people misinterpret everything as personal... it always has to be personal! Opinions! Hang on, one could just be stating a fact.... But people will link that in their head to you endorsing the subject. And to hell with context. An example: Hilary Clinton ran a poor campaign, that's a fact. She lost, that's a fact. It could be interpreted as me being pro-Trump or as a personal opinion.... But she did. She was simply a poor campaigner. Unlike Bernie Sanders. The US is tearing itself apart over Trump and political ideologies. Corporate group-think has a lot to answer for too... Disney can't let themselves be associated in a binary argument with their values at stake vs some shitty joke on Twitter. Of course it's more complex than that... context (stream of thought and his tweets leading up to the jokes), meant as humour, not real, cyberspace, loose talk, banter - the public simply does not take this into account (it's small print and not in the news articles) so Disney had no choice but to fire him. That is truly scary groupthink. Here's a personal opinion of mine... this isn't a proven fact, but I honestly think our binary society is being noticed by our enemies. It is being weaponised by the Russians. If we don't sort ourselves out soon and come to our senses, they will rip right through us. They understand propaganda very well and are pitting us against each other. Liberal vs Conservative. Young vs Old. Canon vs Nikon. Windows vs Mac. They are exploiting the online landscape with bots, fake news and fake users, to cause toxic discourse. Some of them are on this very forum. It's happening everywhere, not just in the US. I haven't heard people talk about much else than Brexit in my home country for 2 years running... That is scary, and to be honest pretty weird. Most people aren't political, but today we are reading politics into our every move and every thought.

  7. OMG, well lol, sometimes you have such a way with words in summing it up! Rather shoot with a Sony PMW-F3 (sub $1K cameras!) than a RED ONE MX! The competition was not as intense back then. A side screen for camera op or AC would make more sense? I guess a top screen is a compromise between those two because they can't choose which of those two sides to go with?!

  8. You can order one, but the cool dude with the Ferrari and sunglasses won't tell you the price. The comment threads on Newsshooter are awesome, the exact opposite of what someone trying to break into a highly competitive market should be doing. He should sell the Ferrari and hire someone to handle the PR/marketing. Chris

  9. Superb director. But apparently people die "due to jokes" now https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44912175 It's pretty dangerous to defend Gunn though. given the current climate. Now I'm starting to realise why the buffoon wreaker Trump won the election. People are genuinely sick of the hysterical PC climate and the impact it has on real lives, yours and ours careers, and our art /freedom of expression.

  12. You have to persevere and look past the AI and JPEGs. Seems I gotta keep saying it... shoot 40MP raw and not the 10MP JPEGs, but I would think that would be obvious, especially when it's the main selling point of the phone, it happens in built in camera app, no third party app required, and it's fast to save a shot, less than 1 second in fact, which is amazing considering the resolution. Here is the iPhone X vs P20 Pro RAW. Click for full size... iPhone X P20 Pro DNG Until now phones have seen little benefit to their raw modes, with perhaps Samsung being best of the raw bunch. iPhone X and Google Pixel XL actually take a step backwards in raw, especially in low light. As for video, yes iPhone X is much better. 200% blow up of 100% crops... P20 Pro iPhone X

Apparently there is no OIS on the main camera and EIS is only supported up to 1080p30. While you could take a crop of the 4k video, theis seems limiting for out of the camera footage.

  14. I recently wrote an article about PC and online hysteria, I quoted Andrew and added some personal element. I don't know the story of M. Gunn, but I also came to the conclusion that Trump won based (among other thing) on a counter reaction of the abuse of non-sense. Saying that doesn't mean that I support Trump because absurdity (Trump) won over non-sense (the distorted PC). The reactions of my article were priceless, It looks like I was homophobic, member of the far-right and... anti Trump. That's a lot for me ! Yes, one can think that SJW and Trump supporters are stupid, at the same time!!! As Trey Parker (South Park) said: "What we're sick of—and it's getting even worse—is: you either like Michael Moore or you wanna fuckin' go overseas and shoot Iraqis. There can't be a middle ground. Basically, if you think Michael Moore's full of shit, then you are a super-Christian right-wing whatever. And we're both just pretty middle-ground guys. We find just as many things to rip on on the left as we do on the right. People on the far left and the far right are the same exact person to us." Unfortunately there is no middle ground anymore. The problem today is that some people just want to get stuck in their world and can't even read a sentence correctly. Facts don't matter anymore. This is not a liberal or conservative issue. Both side are equal in this stupidity. This story is symbolic: The author (Andy C. Ngo) is a serious reporter who writes for mainstream newspapers. He had to face very strong reactions after his article covering this story (and the guy is a Vietnamese refugee and gay.. no exactly the Steve Bannon type of profile...) I think it's important to talk about it because it affects the creative process of many artists.

  17. Thanks! I like your core concept very much - actually, I found it quite inspiring... continuous train-traveling transition and than stop to pay attention to something new and important. Filckering damage effects and vigneting are so nice incorporate in global fluidity; leaks, I'd say, in less extent but also are often adding some mysterious mood as, say, connecting flash holes in memory (?) Micro jitters are enough controlled and even contribute to effects... All in all, for my eyes and taste, I can say just: thanks and bravo, nice concept and inspiring, very consistent exercise.

  18. Tiffen themselves actually made a piece of software to simulate all of their filters including Diffusion, Pro Mist and Glimmer Glass and Ultra Contrast. I mentioned on here a while ago how I saw them being sold off cheap in a camera store in London. They're now even cheaper https://www.cameraworld.co.uk/tiffen-dfx-v3.html That version is the standalone one but has batch processing so could be used in a DNG workflow. They did a (very expensive) plugin version for NLE's that would be more useful but it would be a bit of a treasure hunt trying to track that one down.

  20. I'm surprised that no-one has made a cooler for the MBP. Considering that these computers use the case as a heatsink, all you would have to do is make a platform to put it on that gets a good thermal couple to the bottom and then have some way of getting rid of that heat elsewhere. Things like these would have some effect: but even something like a larger aluminium heatsink would probably get a better thermocouple, especially if you shaped it to fit snugly, and then you could have a much larger surface area underneath that with fans. This might seem a bit ridiculous, but eGPUs only make commercial sense because they improve the speed of your computer, which lessening the thermal throttling will also do, and installing some fans and a heatsink is a lot cheaper than having an entire device with a video card in it!

  21. Absolutely.. sound design is massively important, and we can tell that because Silent Movies are not common, but Blind Movies (aka, music) is a $17B industry!! But, to be a bit less tongue-in-cheek, it's a hell of a lot harder to make people cry or jump around (dance) with a silent film than with music

    Sony a7 III discussion

Here it is: Summary is that you can't simulate it perfectly, but you can probably do a passable job in certain controlled situations. The more I see from this camera the more tempted I am to just buy one too! I told myself I'd wait for the Pocket 2, and Canon and Nikon FF Mirrorless unicorns, but it's very tempting!!

  23. Even if it does make it to market, it is the worst-designed camera body I've ever seen. It makes the original Red One (a clunky, heavy, loaf-shaped turd with non-sensical UI) look like a masterpiece of industrial design. Holy fuck, who puts a screen on top? Where am I supposed to attach a handle?

  25. There is all kinds of company's that build Industrial cameras for monitoring, surveillance. That doesn't mean they will ever be worth a crap for consumer video. There are all kinds of websites where you can buy sensors all day. It doesn't mean that it can't turn into a Red camera thing, but to keep waiting for some Holly Grail 8K camera that we hope is Only going to cost 800 Dollars, well good luck with that panning out. This Z Cam 2 thing gets weirder every day let alone this thing. I think this new PK4 has thrown a Monkey Wrench into all of these startups thinking they are the next Arri. Hell just buy some camera that is proven and get on with it. A old Red Mysterium X would be better than some of these goofball things. What can one of these cameras have over this new PK4 that any normal person needs, or could even afford the media, computing power? Who even owns lenses that can resolve 8K? Who Pixar Studios, Disney Studios? It sure ain't that Nifty 50 Canon lens for 199 bucks.

  26. Obviously, this camera is still in the prototype stage, evidently with two guys doing most of the developing. Hence, there's not much to expect in the way of "marketing." However, from the videos on their YouTube channel, it seems like they are making some progress. Cinemartin has fabricated a physical housing that doesn't seem fully functional yet. Again, it looks like they might be building on the innards of the Ximea machine vision camera. If so, Ximea has done most of the heavy lifting in regards to hardware development. Not sure if even the Ximea camera has been released. To the Ximea model, Cinemartin seems to be adding: a display; internal recording; battery connectivity; cinema software controls; software scopes; LUTs; open api (and/or open source OS); and digital stabilization. Judging from the proportions of the prototype housing, Cinemartin might have spec'd a main circuit board that differs from that of the Ximea. At any rate, I will likely wait to consider shooting 8K for personal projects, until this camera is miniaturized down to the size of an EOSM and until 8K can be edited on a Chromebook. "4K ought to be enough for anybody."

    Lenses

It had to be more than just the lead. Maybe the coatings, heck some sort of dye they out in the glass as they manufactured it, I don't know, but that FD Canon lens has colors that were almost Olympus looking compared to the Pentax ones. That was no accident.

    Lenses

I don't really buy into the sterile VS clinical thing and to me it is just a different look from lens to lens (I love some older ones and some newer ones equally). If you put some of the latest lenses on older cameras you might find they have even more distortion for instance than some older ones as some manufacturers seem to be cutting costs or making the lenses better in other ways by correcting in camera and either make cheaper or make it better in some other area. I have a lovely old Canon EF 20-35 2.8 L (hard to imagine some EF lenses are now around 30 years old) and it probably has a bit less distortion than most newer similar lenses (Canon has updated it four times since via 17-35 and 16-35 lenses) but it doesn't get corrected like the more recent ones do on the latest cameras. I also think the laws regarding use of glass with lead in it (now outlawed) might have a difference on the look of some lenses.

  32. Well I think the object of a travel video is to.. travel, to show movement, even if it is somewhat erratic. Now I a not into the 8mm jerky as heck stuff, but I don't think perfection is the goal either. I think more of a Monopod look than a tripod look. Sure Gimbals are big now, but I don't like them overdone either. They have their place, but not using it for the whole time.

  36. I really liked the vibe of your video and the feel with the diffuse light. Seems like more of an autumn/winter scene than summer . I'm Spain right now with my travel kit (GX80 + 15mm/1.7, 7mm/2.0 and 45-175mm powerzoom), although most of the video will be of my kids doing stuff - not sure how artistic I can make it - ha ha. I should try as people like Martin Wallgren do (linked) so I guess I need to try harder. How do you handle the outdoor/bright daylight scenes to get the shallow depth of focus with the Voigtlanders? Do you just up the shutter speed or use NDs? I have the same combo, but don't travel with them because of the wight and since I don't do much night stuff (small kids that get up early) I don't really need the large aperture.

  37. I am not saying it does not have a great look OOC, It does. It is just too damn big. And you will put a mike on it, a recorder on it, a cheese plate on it, a bigger monitor on it, on and on and it will be big as Hell. Been there done that with my AF100A. All that stuff you actually need at times. You just stand out too damn much with a camera like that. It is a pain in the ass to set up, you need bigger everything, on and on again. Now if you want to impress people sure, but in the town I live in that is not a very good option anymore. This is a small College town, and most people in it are highly educated, and can afford a Lawyer LoL.

    C100 Mark ii in 2018

Who am I to tell anybody how to spend their money, but seriously... the P4K is like the last camera you should buy. To shoot in 4K, you are going to need expensive CFast2 cards. You are going to need about a dozen batteries or an external power supply to last you the day. You'll need a cage. You may need an external monitor. If you're getting a speedbooster, you may need rails and a follow focus. You'll need an IR filter and a good Variable ND or ND filters. If you go native, you'll need a couple fast M43 primes. You're looking at a price point that is closer to 2500 bucks when all is said and done... maybe more. At that price point, you may as well go with the GH5s, you can find them now for around $2000. For the type of casual shooting you do, go for the bells and whistles... even if it costs you about the same... you'll be plenty happier at the end of the day. That is exactly what happened to me... I just never got much better. LOL. But at my level, I can't afford, nor really want someone else to shoot my stuff. There is something organic about being behind the lens... even as a director, that you just don't get sitting on the sidelines while someone else shoots your material. If an actor misses their mark, or ignores it, I can adjust how I would want it adjusted. The devil is in the details with me.

    C100 Mark ii in 2018

Yeah... I just spent an hour watching short films on Vimeo shot with the C100 Mark I and II... I actually preferred the image from the Mark I... and there was absolutely nothing about the image I didn’t like or caused concern with either camera... and I specifically watched narratives only. For the price of these cameras, and the set of features, I’d have no problem choosing it for a Micro/No budget feature film. Like most cameras discussed on this forum, there’s absolutely no reason one can’t create great images with a C100. As always, content is king and the C100 is just a tool that has proven to work.

You just need to print another gear for the lens and calibrate it with three buttons. Also you can use even another adapter. Then you need to reprint all the holders and gears. It is quite noisy. I guess I have to find another silent motors. But look how it works. https://youtu.be/XT2UbgYFvlI
