  1. Ciao, grazie! I've only been once before, maybe 7 years ago. Thank god it isn't raining, like I saw it was yesterday. And the bare essentials set-up I picked for later on (don't have any filters or anything with me)... Panasonic GX80 + Zhongyi Lens Turbo II EF - M43 + K&F Concept CY - EOS adapter + CY Zeiss Distagon 28mm f/2.8 & Olympus 75mm f/1.8

  2. On the latest Panasonic cameras you can put the EVF/LCD in monochrome and it records normally in colour. I have the peaking in yellow which also helps...

  4. I am starting to get more and more involved in VR and 360 work and have been running a few tests on Oculus and Samsung Gear.... Really cool tech that I will talk about soon in another post, with regard to VR narrative work. What I wanted to discuss here though is the ability to watch 2D video within the VR theatres in Oculus Cinema.... At first I was sceptical, but it really is like viewing a film in a real theatre (or a theatre on the moon, or a theatre for ants!). The sense of scale is unique and really effective. The way the light from the film changes the theatre just adds to the feeling. I think this will soon be a bone fide way to start testing your movies for theatre release and could be a really simple way to get test audiences for your film. As with all things VR, explaining, showing videos etc just doesn't do it justice.... If you can get hold of a Gear VR or Oculus, be sure to check it out... It is stunning and sure to play a big part in the future of film consumption. I found this video below that gives quite a good glimpse into how it all works... But really, you need to try this out for yourself... Exciting times!

  5. Imo, Don't start subforums, it is what kills forums in general. Just look at dvxuser. Most people, me included never visit subforums. There was even a thread started to summarize the progress so we didn't have to visit the nx1 forum, and it was started by the owner... And there isn't much stuff being sold anyway. Just IMO.

  6. Reds are plenty sharp enough for me. There's no sharpening applied to the raw, you can select sharpening in standard red debayer which isn't great, or apply your own. Consumer cams use a ton in camera and compress the shit out of the data. Sharpening is part of trying to get detail back from a bayer array. Here's a short test. I was going for Emmanuel Lubezski plus cats LOLOLOL!!!1one!!1! 1st shot 4K 25fps, 2nd shot 2K 50fps. So yes the second shot is cropped in. It's not that noisy, certainly not unmanagable at ISO800 here. I think it was 60mm Macro

  7. I was making some Gimbal tuning tutorials and decided to test something a bit different, it turned out to work surprisingly well, or what do you think?

  9. Viewfinders on most ENG cameras past and present are B&W. It can massively help judge critical focus when the image is 'simplified' into a monochromatic range - it's often easier to see contrast and edge sharpness that way. As for helping composition? - it might help in some cases, but often colour (or lack of) can affect the balance to a composition - which may well be missed if using B&W as monitoring for a colour 'capture'. If you intend to shoot B&W only - then yes, monitoring in B&W is the way to go. Best solution may be to have an external monitor or EVF that can quickly switch between mono and colour, that way you can be shooting for B&W - but actually be recording colour. That way you can always have the option of reverting back to colour if needed, but your exposure/ contrast to your compositions would be primarily aimed for B&W delivery.

  10. Yeah, it is quite unfortunate that I don't have that option because in this case it is only important that the screen is in b&w so the footage doesn't have to be. I am already thinking about adding an external monitor/recorder to my kit in the future so I can get that option that way, and for now I will shoot monochrome for fun and practice. BTW, I must confess that I'm a little bit of a B&W fanboy

  11. Just real heads up to everyone - Bitrate Mods are not working with this FW update, not on NX1 not on nx500. If you use bitrate hack - doesn't upgrade YET, you are loose this option for good, probably.

  12. I learned on old Sony beta cams and the VF's were all B&W, nothing wrong with that at all.

  13. The manual of the Cinema camera can be found via BMD's website. Just go to support and look for the download link there. I remember they call it Blackmagic Cinema Camera Manual. Edit: just looked around and here is the link: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/manuals/CinemaCamera/Blackmagic_Cameras_Manual.pdf

  14. 1. Two lp-e6 batteries give me around 2 hours on my 7" Must HD. 2. Yes, there's audio levels, but you have to get in to menu to change settings (a BIG pain). I use a Sennheiser MKE 400 (on high gain), and set the levels of the BMMCC to auto if I want some usable audio. 3. Nope, but ProRes has loads of Info baked in, so you can change it after. Just make sure you get the WB right. 4. Dunno exactly, because I tend to mix 60p and 24p all the time (on a 128Gb card). But around 45-50' I suppose. 5. Dunno.

  17. So let me get this straight... Samsung brought their firmware team out of retirement to make sure the NX1 was definitely dead, they don't like the idea of mods bringing it to life again!

    new fw nx1 and nx500

lol, is this going to become a game of cat and mouse with samsung trying to stop people from hacking their FW? Witch is made a quite a bit of GPL code by the way. They should embrace the movement and release the full source code and all their development tools

  19. I know the GH5 will be excellent and full of new features. I still hope it will correct Panasonic "blind spot" and finally shows basic exposure information in video modes (iso, aperture and shutter speed). Is it too much to ask?

    NX500 hopes and dreams

Disabling NR and enabling UHD, 4K, 2.5K MJPEG even UHD at 50/60FPS with LOG would make NX1 and NX500 kill cinema cameras in the price ranges of 20 - 50k in terms of video quality, sure you get one or two stop more dynamic range, but these cameras are like mobile camera size in comparison to those cinema cameras imao. Make NX1 shoot 2.5k raw video, would been a pipe dream come true, that would probably get big names to use the camera for their big movies I am sure of it. They used Canon DSLR's with Magic Lantern in the movie Mad Max

  24. That is very true, I think there is a big difference between nx1 and nx500 here in NR section. I can't shoot any video with proper noise, but it's almost two month since we start digging NR in NX. But you know, while I print this, one thought come to mind and I think there is a way to test nx1 about NR I didn't check yet. As always, good talk ))

  25. I included the 2.5K as option to be set on the DC channel (for testing), and ran a few test shots today, and looks like there is no difference in quality from when being on VGA. However with regard to the "interlacing" you are talking about, I get it only once in a while - maybe once in 50 recordings. 2.5K does exhibit more problematic artifacts indeed, and increasing the bitrate does not help here, however it's far from "useless", well... I guess it's a matter of personal preference. here is an example from today's 2.5K / 180Mbps test out of camera: applied RGB curves only:

  26. On a side note, would anybody be interested in working on a pdf with stills or an instruction video that we could embed in the post, so as to make this quite clear for new users. ie check firmware, reset camera to defaults, wipe card, place files in root etc, I can edit it in an afternoon, but would like someone to just check that the information is indeed correct. maybe some small points relating to what cards work best, and what speeds you will get out of them (maybe 5 most popular etc) I have 3 lens adapters arriving for EF, OM and M42 if there is any info that can come from those too...

  27. Ok, folks, so my appologies to all. I picked this up from a samsung store as a "shop demo" for well below clear-out retail, but it seems some one may have fiddled with it. the map key reset has solved the issue, thank-you all, I will make a donation tomorrow. thanks again.

  28. The attached PDF file contains some of the data I've measured and collected for various lenses. EFL is the paraxial focal length, EXPP is the exit pupil distance measured from the image plane in air (positive value means pupil is towards the object from the image), ENPP is the entrance pupil distance measured from the first glass surface (positive value means the entrance pupil is towards the image plane from the first surface), and BFL is the distance from the rear glass surface to the image plane measured in air. All measurements are in millimeters.LensData.pdfLensData.pdf

  29. I recently upgraded my H4n to an H5 (same preamps as the H6). Excellent performer. Menus are perfectly intuitive to me, but maybe that's just my familiarity with the brand. Also just picked up a Senheiser MKE600. Very comparable sound to the NTG-3 imo, but a lot less expensive and with the option to run off battery power to a 3.5mm jack as well as P48 XLR.

  30. I have a used AT4073a I'll sell cheap. Personally I prefer my 416 and don't find the AT to be less "unforgiving" but it's super good for the money, in the same league just very directional and hot (also can be a good thing). It's so hot it can help with bad preamps, too. Look into the F8. That seems to be where it's at if you can't afford SD/Zaxcom. I wouldn't consider anything else at that price point.

  31. I went through the same exercise in 2015. I wound up investing in the following and I've been happy. Tascam 701D 2 Tascam DR-10C, only available outside the US for now. I leverage my Sennheiser G3 system and mics with this setup but Aspen or OST mics would work great too. Pairing two of these with a G3 system can create a super compact audio system with massive recording redundancy that you can monitor and even feed into a camera. Used AT4053b and AT4073a mics. You have to be patient to find these used. Took me 6 months. For the amateur stuff I do I've been pleased with this gear. For pure quality I'd look at a used MixPre, I had one of these and sold it, I regret that. But I find the Tascam 701D super easy to use once you get it set up right and it's super bag friendly and camera friendly.

Finally completed my Voigtlander SL II Set. 20mm, 28mm, 40mm, 58mm, & 90mm. 20 is the last, while not the sharpest It has great rendering and "pop" with very little distortion on faces.

Canon 1DX Mkii vs Sony A7Rii

Still a slight difference ...with some more effort I could get them probably closer. Sony keeps up just fine but I admit the footage is very thin.
