Nikon FF Mirrorless
hansel and 2 others reacted to Robert Collins for a topic
Actually,, I have a different reason for thinking that it 'wont' take Nikon years to catch up 'Sony' with lenses. The key point with mirrorless lenses is that they need different af motors to pure 'pdaf' lenses (of DSLRs) to take advantage of the 'pdaf' plus 'cdaf' fine tuning of mirrorless lenses. The Nikon 1 had excellent on sensor pdaf because the sensors were built by Aptina which had on sensor pdaf tech. Aptina agreed a cross licensing patent deal with Sony (and was subsequently taken over by On Semi who no longer makes image sensors for dedicated ILCs). Sony took that tech and used it in their second generation A7x series. Nikon will presumably license the same tech from Aptina/Sony for their mirrorless. This is a long winded way of saying that Nikon's mirrorless af will likely be very similar to Sony's. So I dont really see any particular reason why 3rd party manufacturers of Sony FE mount lenses shouldnt be able to fairly quickly come up with Nikon Z mount versions. So Sigma (well sort of), Tamron, Samyang and Zeiss Batis (?). Now that is 20 lenses that could be introduced in less than a year.3 points -

I think the current general narrative - Nikon v Sony - FF mirrorless isnt that productive. Sony has set the bar in terms of 'features' and 'value' incredibly high to think that Nikon will beat it with their first mirrorless offering. From Nikon's perspective the most important thing is that they get their installed customer base on board for their mirrorless product and dont continue to leak elsewhere. From that perspective, it is incredibly important that their adapter works incredibly well (or certainly much better than a Nikon lens on a Sony - which certainly isnt asking a lot3 points -

I've enhanced the image using the latest Hollywood VFX and I can conclude it's so large because it has to fit in all the video modes.. I can clearly make out 1080 RAW 12bit, 1080 RAW 14bit, 4K RAW 14bit, 4K RAW 16bit, 4K Prores 444 HQ, 5K RAW, 5K Prores 444 HQ, 6K Prores 444 HQ, 8K Prores 444 HQ, but the last two are too blurry - I'm assuming they're 10K to downsample for 8K.3 points -

Canikon probably won't let a mirrorless camera completely out-spec their top-end DSLRs, so the D850 is a much nicer benchmark to aim for than that wet fish, the 5D IV. Also there are important differences between Nikon and Canon when it comes to video... Nikon has no pro-video division profit margins to protect. If the Canon mirrorless is going to be a full frame M50, with 5D Mk IV sensor and 4K MJPEG, I ain't buying it.2 points -
I am so hyped for this camera. Even just D850 video specs with IBIS would probably be enough to win me over. I don't need all the picture customization of sony's. Dare i say i wouldn't even need log profile. Nikon color science (and flat profile) is that nice: I guess i'm already sold, but of course if Nikon nail video AF and get it close to dual pixel goodness, it might even be game over for Canon.2 points

The cheapest solution could be something like the Benro S6/7/8, next option could be a Sachtler Ace and that's that. You can do some moves with the Benros if you weight them right, Ace is great for dSLR/mirrorless.2 points

It is no different from if someone tells me they went on a weekend camping trip and it "cost them nothing", then someone complains "but you drove to the bush in a $40K car, then used a $1K tent, and used $50 of petrol, and and and etc..." It is nitpicking, and I feel is an attitude which is also disconnected from reality. It is good for people to realize that you can make "low budget" films with nice gear (such as REDs or whatever), but it takes networking and effort/compromise. And you can't do it by going at it alone, and sticking to online forums. Although of course there are also people in the film industry who take this too far, and basically exploit people and their good will. But there is a happy middle ground there in which both parties feel they benefit from the experience in a production. That is because making a feature film is very very expensive. It is no more unreasonable than calling a $200,000 house a "low budget house", or calling a $10,000 house a "no budget house"!2 points

It depends on the region. I see far more Fujis in peoples hands around UK and Europe than Pentax DSLRs, that's for sure. The shops have far more room dedicated to Fuji's cameras than Pentax, and the unit shipments don't take into account the fact higher priced models ship in smaller numbers, but might take a larger proportion of the market by value than by unit numbers. Of course Canon and Nikon getting into mirrorless is a severe storm for Fuji, Panasonic and Olympus. They are going to get squeezed. It should prompt all 3 to go full frame, so we win in the end.1 point -

Oh I like the output a lot. But it would have helped with the noise some also. No easy way to do anything shooting, unless it is the same O same O thing every time.1 point -

I'm not sure what, if anything, they could put in the X-T3 to make me upgrade to be honest. I saw enough that I didn't like in terms of the IBIS on the X-H1 to mean it probably wouldn't be IBIS that would persuade me. They could fix the stupidity with the app but thats just fiddling around the margins really for my use. They have locked themselves in with regard to the lens coverage I think so full frame isn't going to be happening and their approach to full frame seems to be to go with cropping the GFX sensor. All of which means the X-T2 will be the end of the line for me with the X-T series its become a bit of a cul de sac as far as my needs are concerned. A very nice cul de sac with high quality fast primes and zooms but a cul de sac nonetheless. The promised range of long lenses haven't materialised (and the one that has is short on range and waaay too long on price) and the initial promise of the video aspect hasn't been built upon by adding zebras etc. It doesn't necessarily mean I'll be putting all my Fuji stuff on eBay but I definitely won't be adding to it.1 point

The X1D to me almost feels like its in the same ballpark as that snakeskin covered monstrosity that Robert posted when it comes to being considered a real Hasselblad. Its like they've looked at what Leica did with the T (which was a radical departure for them) and thought "Yeah, lets get hip and down with the kids like they seem to be doing". Its ended up being like someone's Dad thinking about how old their Dad looked at 50 and putting a pair of skinny jeans on and getting a tattoo. Sometimes, its not only appropriate to just be your Dad but its also actually better.1 point

Nice work. Were you also the DP? I noticed these are very noisy, but that's not a surprise with a Canon. They seem to be exposed traditionally, as film would usually be exposed, rather than exposed to the right as digital often is. The most experienced shooters on this forum usually prefer ETTR with digital (and it's proven to work well with the Red Dragon, which is also very noisy), but I'm stuck in my old ways. I was curious how you or your DP exposed these. What ISO in camera, what ISO he rated the camera at. 800/800? Exposed through the camera's meter? Or with an incident meter (generally how I still work)? They look good, but are also exposed differently from most C200 clips I've seen, which usually look overexposed, so I wanted to ask. Thanks. Just waiting on a price drop and I think I'm going to buy one of these cameras.1 point -
The great advantage of medium format lenses is that you can stop down for insane detail and resolution, whilst maintaining a dreamy full frame fast-aperture look. The F2.8 GFX lenses for example look like F2 on full frame but MUCH sharper and better optically. The other advantage is the dynamic range - no matter what DXO Mark says or how good the full frame sensors are getting - I saw for myself with the GFX 50S how realistic the image looks when graded for maximum dynamic range and how much quality information comes out of the shadows vs my full frame cameras. Hasselblad deserve criticism for their handling of this YouTuber situation in-person, with the reps, although the YouTuber's account of what happened could be biased or exaggerated, we don't know what really went on. Hasselblad also deserve some flack for the X1D mirrorless camera, which came out with quite the showcase of bugs, and is hobbled by terrible AF performance. That was a very important category to mess up and at the price you expect a whole lot more. I love the H6D range though and the 100MP model is total cutting edge tech. The ergonomics of the Hasselblad H3D through H6D have to be experienced one in a life-time... they are different. I love the modularity and HUGE view-finder. There's not many other things you can find a 48mm wide Kodak CCD sensor in that feels as nice and costs £2000 used.1 point

Nikon have patented their own version of dual pixel autofocus. https://www.diyphotography.net/nikon-mirrorless-camera-may-dual-pixel-autofocus-tech-according-new-patent/ We could well be seeing that in the new mirrorless cameras. If you assume the leaked specs and price are correct, there's no need to think it will be anything approaching a 'lite' mirrorless camera. Leaked ad campaign looks good. It's a Chinese one with a very famous actress. Not much unusual about that. If you want to read that much into a leaked BTS photo from one ad campaign because there isn't a serious pro photographer holding the camera...well... haha. Maybe if the leaked specs didn't mention a $3000 price tag and full frame 46MP sensor with 4K video. It's great that the Sony monopoly on full frame mirrorless cameras (Leica aside) has come to an end. There will be the Canon offering before too long as well, and then maybe Olympus / Panasonic will jump into the full frame mirrorless wars. More competition = better cameras.1 point -

Well its all good speculation. I certainly dont think Nikon would introduce a poor camera for their first serious mirrorless but I think it will be a 'solid' entry rather than anything too groundbreaking. Two reasons... 1) Timing. I think if Nikon had a mirrorless up their sleeve that would 'blow away' Sony they would have already released it much earlier. The timing looks entirely 'defensive' to me. Nikon 'needs' FF mirrorless 'now' in response to the success of Sony's A7x3 cameras or risk eroding their client base.. 2) Marketing 'lite'... Look at this photo taken at a marketing shoot.... This is marketing 'lite' - it is far more Nikon 1 than D850. This girl is young, female and appreciates that the mirrorless is lighter. She doesnt go out in the sun (or the rain) or go parkour jumping.....1 point -
All your normal UWA zooms too, like Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and 14-20mm f/2 etc. Plus the wider ones like Sigma 8-16mm. Those Rokinons are all awesome, have had the 12/2, 21/1.4, 35/1.2 and 50/1.2. The 21/1.4 is the weakest, but still fantastic. I wouldn't call it a 'good' 1080p camera, just slightly better than some previous Canons. I also wouldn't be giving the 'ergonomics' nod to the M50 either, it's kind of junk in every possible way. ML could be really, really interesting! How about a lens with IS? Seems like a good start to me. New Blackmagic Pocket 4K should be good to go without major rigging IMO. Fuji, the X-T2 is a lot cheaper. But yes the Fujis are a bit lacking. Canon, yep pretty much only cinema line (for now). GH5... nah. Although focus issues are probably around the 4K modes more so than the 1080p. Sony's don't overheat in 1080p (or haven't for a VERY long time now). In Sony the best options for nice 1080p are the A7S (original is cheap as these days and still produces stunning 1080p) and the A6000 (still better than the A6300/A6500) and the A7 III is pretty darn good (and really good 24/25/30/50/60/100/120p modes throughout). Personally though, the C100 is still one of the best, if not best if you want just really nice 1080p. Plus it has all the other benefits and as other have mentioned is reasonably small when the handle it removed, but you don't want to go without the side handle. How about the little box camera Canon make for industrial purposes based on the C100 II? Looks awesome for drones and gimbals and stuff too. Nobody talks about it. I want to say MS20 something... Me either. I own the camera and has been nothing but regret. It's not nice. There is very little I can say about it that is good. I'd be happy enough with the guts of the XF400 in the XC10/15 body. They are kind of from the same family. But the newer sensor has DPAF and 4K60 and 120fps 1080 etc. The XF400 actually kind of looks like it fits your needs. Only downside for me on that camera is lack of C-Log (but does have Wide DR). I would be surprisingly ok with that. Canon have nothing in their range below the C200, except the underpowered XC10/15. An updated version of those that sits between would be wonderful. In fact RED threatened for years to produce something like that and never did. C200 is quite a bit bigger than C200. C100 MkI to MkII is nominal at best, the EVF pokes out a lot more on the MkII. Are you thinking of the C300 / C500? Yes please! In fact let's not really bring anything from the M50 except maybe the processing to finally get Canon files into smallish codecs (straight to cheap SD cards). Oh and the nice 4K output on the M50 please. Where did the lens go? That doesn't look right.1 point

I'm on the same spot but on the opposite way. I've been with mac since the powermac G5 and I do love FCPX but I'm seriously considering moving to PC and Resolve with a little bit of Vegas 16 (at the end of the month). I agree with everybody here. If you're going to stick to Premiere get the Dell. If you want to try Resolve, get the Dell. If you want to try FCPX obviously get the macbook pro, but it's going to be an expensive test. I've build a gaming PC for my children as an excuse and I'm loving it even though it's an i3. I chose the wrong components to build a hackintosh and struggled to make one. Next I'm building a golden build and try again with an i5, if it works, I'll stick with apple a little longer but if I can't because I'm an idiot, I'm moving everything to PC and get that same Dell with Resolve.1 point -

It seems like the decision is if you're swapping to FCPX or not. I'd suggest watching some of those "I switched from PP to FCPX" videos, some about FCPX to PP, and see if you can find any where people went PP -> FCPX ->PP again, and listen to the reasons why people made those switches and what their impressions were. It depends on what style of editing you do as each editor will have slightly different strengths and weaknesses, and will have slightly different philosophies / approaches to things. It's about how well they fit to how you like to think and what your workflow looks like. I use Resolve, not because it's "the best" (it's not) but because it fits my mindset and workflow.1 point

Do we really and truely honestly all believe that the exact same sensor is being used in these cameras ? The X7, E2, GHx, P4k... It’s a rhetorical question. Which means I know the answer I’m just asking it here publicly... And why does it even matter. Even if they ARE the exact same sensor. Every camera manufacturer will get different results and we learn NOTHING from these kinds of theoretical sensor discussions. Look at the previously mentioned CIon / BMD 4K / Aperture images. Are they the same ? Look at digital Bolex, who used the KAF / KODAK senors. Are they the same images as the Ikonoscope / Leica / Olympus E series cameras that also used the same sensor family ? Just because they share the same sensor or sensor linage or it comes form the same factory, it’s almost meaningless because the company making the images form that sensor have to do so much customising, calibrating and processing of the image, it becomes irrelevant other than the specs we already know... Let’s just look at the pictures instead of obsessing over the specs.... JB1 point -

Wide angle lens for Panasonic GX85 | Help

I use the PL15/f1.7 and the Laowa 7.5/f2 (and the 45-175 zoom) with my GX80 as a very small travel package. All lenses have the same 46mm filter size, so I used the same step-up to my 58mm NDs. On the Laowa, I get some obvious vignetting due to my filters and magnetic adaptors - will look at that for next time. I have an example when I'm walking with the 7.5mm using the GX80 IBIS - I was carrying a lot of beach stuff and probably could do better.
