EVA1 vs Terra 4k or Mavo vs FS5 II - decisions!
webrunner5 and 2 others reacted to mercer for a topic
It seems the EVA1 is really the only choice if you need the 240fps. As far as Canon goes... yeah I guess... the RawLite out of the C200 edits natively in both FCPX and Resolve. Sure it eats data, but I am seeing more and more shooters using the RawLite for wedding videos and they go through way more footage than you probably will... plus I believe you can use CFast2 to SSD adapters... or I vaguely remember reading that somewhere? And also remember that a lot of reviews have stated that the 8 bit 4K Canon Log files have more latitude in post than the 10bit files from the GH5. Anyway my point is that don’t disregard the C200 quite yet... I think you’ll find it offers a lot of what you want/need... except for the 240p... but almost no camera has that, so it’s kind of a bottleneck for your choices. Last thing about the C200 and then I’ll stop... a feature that goes unmentioned is that it exports 10bit 2K from it SDI port. So with an external recorder you can get some juicy 2K ProRes with it. Okay, I’m done. Good luck with whatever you choose.3 points -

Nooooooooooooooooo............... not Rick and Morty!!! ? I'd watch that. Or at least give the first episode a go. (and anyone who thinks her character at the start of the series is healthy is delusional) http://www.dailyedge.ie/insatiable-backlash-4143489-Jul2018/ It is sad people even feel a need to defend the show. How does a person even think like that?!?! Or do they seriously think there are plenty of actresses out there who'd happily go for real from very morbidly obese to super hot overnight just for a Netflix show?? Well, as of course that doesn't seem likely at all it could feasibly be done for real that extreme transformation by any serious actress (although, we seem to more often see male actors willing to put their bodies through radical transformations?! Perhaps. I'd be curious to see a study on this), what are the alternatives? Does a "skinny suit" exist to turn a morbidly obese person into a super model? Of course not!! Don't be rediculious. Thus of course she had to wear a fat suit. There. Is. No. Other. Option. (except perhaps CGI?? But we're still a few more years away from that) Sorry, you're a few decades too late on that. People have already tried that! People were suggesting such crazy theories even back in the 1990's https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-harris-levels/ Heck, you can go further back to say the early 1980's when people blamed all sorts of crazy stuff on D&D. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_controversies And I'm sure every generation had their scrapegoat. Be it Rock and Roll music, D&D, or Doom or whatever. Just I fear within the last decade that the crazy has racketed up many levels to a degree we've never seen before.2 points

People who defend Trump on the US economy don't realise that the economy is like a very large ship that takes a long time to respond to the commander. The changes Trump is making will be felt a few years from now. Today, you're experiencing the decisions the previous commander in chief made. Some of Trump's policies are impacting on people immediately, like the trade wars with his allies in Europe and China. If you think trade wars are good for jobs, think again. Anyway back on our favourite topic.... Today the hounds are out again making certain ideas and satires off limits for comedy. It's as bad as burning books. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-44936332 This time it's the Rick & Morty co-creator and the guy behind the sitcom Community. Nearly 10 years ago he filmed an online skit, a parody of Dexter, called Daryl. His fictional character abuses a doll. And over at Netflix they are not allowed to write ideas about fat girls becoming thinner. https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-44934692 Of course none of the outraged have actually seen either the skit, or the show. And it's all fiction we're talking about. FICTION. It's like suggesting computer games turn people into serial killers. Yeah it's a shame it has become so personal. We're in such a selfish age of individualism, everything has to be. So one cannot have an opinion any more without it becoming a character judgement. And one cannot defend a person's career and films, without also being seen to be defending the content of their jokes. John Lasseter is gone and nobody defended the guy. First they came for the celebrities and nobody spoke out... one day it will be the everyman, and still nobody will speak up. You're the one saying Kids Are Evil.2 points -
You're making a moral judgement concerning the situation without stating and interacting with his many comments, the video he posted, or his correspondence with a convicted pedophile. What this whole conversation should be doing is helping us realise that there seem to be significant problems deeply rooted in Hollywood that need addressing. It's not normal behaviour for a 44 year old, it is broken. The politics is real though, a single tweet from a conservative, or a single recorded bad word, and the media goes into meltdown and decides they should be destroyed and the American people insulted. Incidentally, you say "wreaker Trump" (sic) but I think you'll find the economic and employment stats are doing pretty well.2 points

Well I must be #28!??? But I was in a similar position a few months ago. Needed a 4K capable camera for a film and a body that could also handle pro photo use for my photography biz, as upgrade to the 5D2. I needed something familiar. Looked seriously at the 1Dc but ultimately went with the 5D4. No regrets although I was concerned with the crop in 4K. I shot a film and have used it on several photo shoots and can say that it capable of producing an exceptional image, video and stills. A lot of the negatives online, have been positives in my experience. The giant file size, is easy to edit in FCPX and can be pushed around for colour. I finished my film in no small part due to the incredible DPAF. Seriously, it was a lifesaver! I don't really care about spec sheets. Been shooting long enough to know that the only thing that really matters is the image quality. And I don't really care if the file sizes are too big or the crop, etc, etc.2 points

Damphousse you prove my point. Nobody is beatifying Trump. I agree 100%. There is no middle ground. The internet has shaped public discourse into binary positions, like 1s and 0s. People are are getting very confused to be quite honest....for example Damphousse above is conflating my opinion and endorsement. Opinions do not equal endorsements. We're going through an era of western society which is not exactly our finest, and tribalism is taking over amidst all the kerfuffle. One is profiled for one's opinions constantly. For example I might be a liberal, Trump hating centre-ground voting British person, but if you state just one fact that people might misinterpret endorsing him, you're painted into a corner. Same with jokes. Make a bad taste one and it can be used against you in your career. Today, people misinterpret everything as personal... it always has to be personal! Opinions! Hang on, one could just be stating a fact.... But people will link that in their head to you endorsing the subject. And to hell with context. An example: Hilary Clinton ran a poor campaign, that's a fact. She lost, that's a fact. It could be interpreted as me being pro-Trump or as a personal opinion.... But she did. She was simply a poor campaigner. Unlike Bernie Sanders. The US is tearing itself apart over Trump and political ideologies. Corporate group-think has a lot to answer for too... Disney can't let themselves be associated in a binary argument with their values at stake vs some shitty joke on Twitter. Of course it's more complex than that... context (stream of thought and his tweets leading up to the jokes), meant as humour, not real, cyberspace, loose talk, banter - the public simply does not take this into account (it's small print and not in the news articles) so Disney had no choice but to fire him. That is truly scary groupthink. Here's a personal opinion of mine... this isn't a proven fact, but I honestly think our binary society is being noticed by our enemies. It is being weaponised by the Russians. If we don't sort ourselves out soon and come to our senses, they will rip right through us. They understand propaganda very well and are pitting us against each other. Liberal vs Conservative. Young vs Old. Canon vs Nikon. Windows vs Mac. They are exploiting the online landscape with bots, fake news and fake users, to cause toxic discourse. Some of them are on this very forum. It's happening everywhere, not just in the US. I haven't heard people talk about much else than Brexit in my home country for 2 years running... That is scary, and to be honest pretty weird. Most people aren't political, but today we are reading politics into our every move and every thought.2 points -
Is the EOS-M *THE* Digital Super-8 Camera?
kidzrevil reacted to Matt James Smith ? for a topic
I've been playing half-heartedly with ML on my EOS-M for a while but in general lost interest due to annoyances such as the focus pixels, low resolution and workflow. However, inspired by recently released footage from Kodak's new Super-8 camera and fond memories of playing with real Super-8 footage in art school, I decided to mess around with the EOS-M again to see how close I could get to the Super-8 aesthetic. Turns out I surprised myself! I've only shot a few early tests so far but the following video is, I think, very usable as a digital Super-8 stand-in. The basic specs are as follows: 4:3 ratio (like Super-8) 1440 x 1078 resolution (plenty for Super-8) 18fps (same as consumer Super-8) 12-bit Lossless RAW (continuous!) 5x zoom (haven't accurately calculated crop factor/sensor size in relation to Super-8 yet - would appreciate help with this) 3X3 Crop mode (Experimental build: magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2017Dec19.EOSM202) Also- no focus pixels! (I have no idea why this is. They reappear if you go up to 14bit lossless or use any of the standard 10/12/14-bit modes). Below are two versions of my initial tests - the first is with FilmConvert film emulation applied, the second is without FilmConvert, just some basic contrast and saturation tweaks. Sorry the grade isn't very good I'm getting used to both the EOSM DNG's and FCPX's new grading tools. FilmConvert: https://vimeo.com/253014693/badd381eb4 No FilmConvert: https://vimeo.com/253014620 My post workflow is very simple: convert .MLV files to DNG's with MlRawViewer and then drop them straight into FCPX. Do a bit of colour correction with an adjustment layer if needed, then export clip as ProRes 4444 XQ. Bring it back into FCPX and conform the 18fps to the fps of the timeline (I always use a 25p timeline and *think* this requires slowing the 18fps clip to 72% but I'm not confident my maths are accurate - it certainly looks close to normal speed to me though). I'm not very technical so you won't find much explanation of why it's working from me. I'd appreciate contributions to what's going on here so I understand it better and other can replicate if they want to. In particular I'd like to figure out the effective sensor size I'm using, and also why there are no pink dots. The things that excite me about it as a viable Digital Super-8 camera are: 1. The shutter speed - only Magic Lantern allows that really, and it really helps give that authentic Super-8 feel. 2. The 12bit colour space and RAW grain makes the footage film-like and organic. 3. The fact you can adapt C-mount lenses to the EOS-M. The lens I used for these tests is just the 15-45mm EF-M kit lens in manual focus mode. However I have a Cosmicar 6mm f/1.2 on its way to me as we speak and if I can get it to infinity focus I think I'll have a 'normal' lens (again, I need to figure out the imaging area I'm working with). 4. Shooting 4:3 and 18fps, like Super-8, allows continuous shooting. Things I don't like: 1. Live view is not perfect but using the info button you can jump between Canon's 5x zoom to focus and ML's rather choppy live view for framing. 2. I'm not seeing horrible rolling shutter but it's no Digital Bolex so that does give it away as digital footage somewhat. I hope some others start playing around with these settings. With the 16mm Digital Bolex discontinued and Kodak's new Super-8 camera all the rage, there's a space for a small sensor digital cinema camera to get some love.1 point -

Which is a pity, I'd rather see twenty risk taking $10 million dollar films than another $200 million dollar blockbuster. And it could even end up being overall less financially risky for the studio, as there are decent odds one of those twenty films will end up being a break out success, vs the risk of putting all your eggs in the one basket in the hope of a "blockbuster film". #InvestmentDiversification1 point -

I don't know what was in 2014 (term similar to that tweeter messages by fired man) - so maybe Damphousse collected mistakes and made growing irritation - but judging solely on this (provocative) thread he has equally based perspective and argumentation as anybody. Obviously, you are sick of this man's behavior, attitude or posted intonation... But maybe he could say it was/is his way of joking/provoking authority... So, I can see some formal similarity between your and Disney's decision - your tolerance threshold is located at "form of (un)respect for mods including myself" for prolonged period... Disney tolerance threshold is located at, say, "form of joking (un)respect for children offended by pedophilia" for prolonged period, or so.1 point

EVA1 vs Terra 4k or Mavo vs FS5 II - decisions!

Easyrig... possibly. Think I'll need it at some point. Mistakes... buying gear that I don't use. Also being indecisive about my cameras. I have loads of lighting. Probably too much. I may look at this again. Very curious about the new A7SIII. That could be a decisive point. EVA1 is in pole position (given my VLOG workflow) at the moment, but there's no massive rush. I'm way more experienced with Sony, up to F55, so the door is always open. Canon would be a no-brainer if only they took more features out of their ass and put it in their cameras, such as decent codecs and HFR. They are a very frustrating company!!1 point -

Ever think you're just watching the wrong films? If you expect cutting edge critique and edgy material from your big studio films then you might be looking in the wrong places. Off the top of my head, did you see the horror film Raw, released last year? Yorgos Lanthimos previous films spring to mind. I wouldn't say filmmaking isn't taking any risks. I remember watching Gasper Noe's Love a few years back which featured a 3D cum shot. I'm curious, Trevor Noah has recently been called up admist all this Twitter drudging on a joke he made about Australian aboriginals a few years back, here. Are we thinking this is PC culture gone mad as well? Where is the line drawn here? Because having lived in Australia, and having plenty of friends with Aboriginal background, I know how a joke like this would be replayed over and over again at schools and universities to make them feel like shit. I'm sure it's the same with people who are overweight. I mean, what a boring target anyway. The most risk adverse 'joke' you can make. And for what? All for a quick cheap laugh. Is that something we should be desperately striving to protect? Maybe, in this age of mass hysteria, we shouldn't be looking at the fat, the young, the disadvantaged to get our jokes and our kicks. Maybe we should be looking at people a little higher up in the food chain. Basically what Sasha Baron Cohen's new show is trying to do right now. Not with a lot of success, but still, it's nice to be laughing up rather than down.1 point -

Yes, so much virtue signalling, so little respect for artistic freedom and storytelling. No wonder the bigger studios don't take risks any more. You're absolutely right. It is an age of hysteria and outrage and fanaticism. The arts is timid, self-censoring. Usually you need a vigorous artistic and film-making community to shine a light on the hysteria... As a Kiwi, if you swap out "Orkney" for "New Zealand" I won't get offended. As a big time political nerd I really enjoy a good robust political discussion. My old flatmate and I would have great times as we're from opposite ends of the spectrum and could have debates for hours, he'd even get very agitated and almost shouting as he is jumping up and down! Literally. ha. (not me though, I'm pretty calm, wouldn't even raise my voice) But never would he be upset at me personally (he'd just be shouting and stuff because he is so passionate about the topic), and we'd still be the firmest of best friends at the end of it. Unfortunately this is a rare trait in people, as most people let it influence too heavily their opinion overall of the person. Thus sadly in recent years I've decided it is best I just keep my mouth shut (although sometimes... I can't resist the temptation!). Because many people might think of you as scum from hell simply for sharing a differing political opinion. As for me, I don't mind if you hold a crazy idea or three, as I can see the bigger picture that you're more than just that. For instance let's say you believe something totally mad like the earth is flat. Sure, I can 100% disagree with that, but also at the same time still respect you as a firm friend who will help me out in a pinch, a tech wiz whose expertise I respect, and a hardworking fellow crew member, or whatever else just to give an example.1 point -

It is my favorite method, because the Resolve luma curve is precise, and direct for luma placement. And for a neutral full saturation style, it used to just be the conversion on one node, and a luma curve on the next. Thanks to David L'Abbée, I discovered that it distorts hue. This means that (for example) a given red twists toward green as it gets brighter; and the other hues (MBCGY) twist away from where they should be with brightness change (contorting the color space). Ideally the curve should be coded to 'build-in' this hue pass, though we can do it manually1 point -

I dont agree with the first point at all - in fact I havent bothered reading his 'jokes' because whether they are funny or not I think is irrelevant. And I definitely dont think you should sack a film director because his jokes arent funny. The second point is far more salient. What it comes down to is this. There are many things we say to our friends - call it pub talk - which can be enjoyed between us because we are friends and we know each other. But it is ill-advised/stupid/problematic to transfer your 'pub talk' to the internet because it is both bound to be taken out of context and likely to cause offense. Afterall, there are some things that you say to your mates that you dont say to your grandmother. And if your response to that is 'not really, you dont know my grandmother' - I would say 'exactly'.1 point -

Andrew, I'm not American, have lived both in the UK and Australia and from a multicultural background but this is not about people not having a sense of humour. Let's say a person you didn't know all that well kept joking about 'fucking young boys', while the jokes aren't all that funny he concluded with 'just joking yeah!'. A few years later it's found that those jokes were based on something more real. Do you look back and think 'well the writing was on the wall'. Could something have been done to prevent the outcome? Are Gunns jokes still jokes if we find out that he himself is a paedophile in a few years time? If Gunn's jokes were about a third party like Machael Jackson or the Catholic church, it becomes a different kettle of fish as it's not a direct reflection of a person's character. Joking about committing disgraceful acts yourself though, should be used to judge character. At what point do we start showing concern if everything is 'just a joke'? Is joking about raping women ok in your eyes? Should women just 'lighten up' and accept jokes about rape? By making this acceptable 'banter', you you dilute the issue socially and over time, make this behaviour the norm making it hard to decider when concern should be raised. There are plenty of comedians who are able to be funny without relying on poor taste punch lines like Gunn's. His reliance is on shock value to get a reaction and it's pretty pathetic to be honest.1 point -

I think this a good point. Brits have a very dry sense of humor and they also consider that 'jokes about pedos sort of makes you a pedo' a very strange and false equivalence. But it is dangerous territory. I have just been watching Sacha Baron Cohen's 'who is America?' and I laughed so much it bought tears to my eyes. Others, however, think he should be thrown out of the US and are threatening to cancel their Showtime subscription. So I also feel that Disney is perfectly entitled to sack Gunn if he is damaging their brand. Take Ricky Gervais - who used to insult the audience at the Emmies - even he would say 'well if they find it offensive, they wont invite me back, will they?'1 point -

http://collider.com/james-gunns-firing-guardians-of-the-galaxy/ "The jokes about rape and pedophilia that got James Gunn fired from his position as writer and director of Marvel’s hugely successful Guardians of the Galaxyfranchise are largely un-funny, tasteless, and in most cases disgusting. We should probably get that out of the way right up front, because to defend Gunn in the wake of Disney’s decision is—to a lot of reactionaries with itchy @ fingers—is to also defend the content of the tweets. But a surprisingly often overlooked part of the conversation is the fact that the ringleader of Gunn’s downfall, Mike Cernovich, had to scroll back to 2011 to find the tweets at all. Seven years, conveniently bypassing apologies and mea culpas, overlooking attempts at change, ignoring statements like the one Gunn posted just days before he was fired" "To deny someone the capacity to change is a dangerous precedent to set, not just in Hollywood where a person’s public life is on display 24/7 but to anyone engaging in the social media age. It sets the bar at, “What’s the point?” It gives the message that concepts like betterment and learning are futile because the sins of your past are an immovable weight that only gets heavier the harder you climb." "The Guardians of the Galaxymovies are, boiled down, stories about shitty people—rascals, thieves, assassins, criminals—learning through intense trial and error to be less shitty. Not just that, but the literal magic that comes with the realization that your past does not define you. I think its all a conspiracy, as Gardians of the Galaxy 2 was soooo shit & really not funny at all, Disney saw the script for No.3 & just found an excuse to get rid of him, in order to save the 3rd film from turning out to be an absolute turd. Disney knew exactly who James Gunn was when they hired him - this is the guy who made "Slither" (big phallic penis invasion horror film), a TV series called "PG Porn" (yes you read that right!) & "Movie 43" to name a few. When you hire someone nowadays, the HR department does their due diligence and their first stop is Facebook & Twitter, without exception. I know people who simply haven't hired people for what they've written on Social Media, regardless of whether their posts have been jokes or not - "Hate going to work on Monday mornings or any morning for that matter", "Think I'm going to pull a sickie today", "My boss is a C**T" etc. And that's just for work related things. So, now do you really think or believe Disney didn't know about these tweets a long time ago? Of course they did & they played their trump card (yeah!!!) now to get rid of him for whatever their real reason/s where. That would be a very sad thing, kidzrevil. I always enjoy looking at your work, but I've gotta agree, I'm finding it increasingly uncomfortable to come here and read these opinion pieces. It's not a one-off either. There have been an increasing amount of posts here (not Andrew's, but on this forum) that I've found pretty reprehensible – there was a topic a few months ago where posters made fun of an initiative to encourage more female filmmakers in pretty vulgar terms. I have learned so much from a lot of very talented posters here over the years but I really think discussion with a more political bent should be taken elsewhere. I think it's important to encourage open discourse wherever possible, and that's a hugely important role that films do very well, but when it quickly turns into ugly insults being thrown around I think it's clear these forums are not the place. I feel like this is a trend and I hope Andrew finds a way to reverse it.1 point -
We did a little research for an all arounder in the family a couple of months ago and we bought the S9+. For work, I bought the LG G6 last year, and it is still going strong, recently got Oreo and another upgrade, while its second cam is an ultra wide one, that I enjoy more than any other cam I have ever used (phone cam I meam obv!). Nowwdays is dead cheap too. LG is back since the G6, and with the new V series. Give them a look. Another extra is the low SAR numbers of the Koreans. That was one of the selling point for us, while Apple, Xiaomi and Huawei usually are close to the permitted limits. In day time its processing is more pleasing to me, but in darker environments the small sensor (smaller than the latest flagship phones) is very limited. All in all, I have vastly better quality with my NX500+30mm 2f pancake, or the 16-50PZ.1 point

Yeah I enjoyed this very much. I love a good vintage look so that was also appreciated. What kind of overlays did you use? Also what lens/es did you shoot with? Obviously the G7 is working good enough for you, but if you’re looking to upgrade, I’m sure the IBIS of the G85/G9/GH5 would definitely help a lot with any shakes you’re encountering. And if you want some rock solid video, the Olympus IBIS is even better than Panasonic’s. I had the E-M5ii for a spell last year and I almost had to try really hard to get shaky footage. Did you actaully ban Damphousse from this forum based on this discussion? Gunns tweets were completely out of line. Sorry, but 'fucking little boys' is not comedy and talk like that should not be normalised. The number of Paedophilia 'jokes' he makes is also quite alarming.1 point

So fire comedians for making bad jokes... Who cares?! It's only freedom of expression at stake. If that is the kind of world we live in now, so be it.1 point -

You have to persevere and look past the AI and JPEGs. Seems I gotta keep saying it... shoot 40MP raw and not the 10MP JPEGs, but I would think that would be obvious, especially when it's the main selling point of the phone, it happens in built in camera app, no third party app required, and it's fast to save a shot, less than 1 second in fact, which is amazing considering the resolution. Here is the iPhone X vs P20 Pro RAW. Click for full size... iPhone X P20 Pro DNG Until now phones have seen little benefit to their raw modes, with perhaps Samsung being best of the raw bunch. iPhone X and Google Pixel XL actually take a step backwards in raw, especially in low light. As for video, yes iPhone X is much better. 200% blow up of 100% crops... P20 Pro iPhone X1 point -
Nice stuff stv, I thought the film effects and leaks were well done. Especially when the leaks were timed to the little bursts of static in the music (unless those were added in post?). I agree with anonim about the structure of the train travel breaking up the stops for travel moments was really effective. There were a few train station shots that lasted a bit too long IMO but overall well done.1 point

I always hesitate to comment something that is so widely explored... so, as my best (and nothing special clever) I'd say that maybe the best answer is to try as much as possible solutions. It really depends of type of shots, usage, scenario, possible control over circumstances, monitoring solution, decision about AF or MF etc... Except for walking shots, I think that GH5 IBIS is safely enough for near all creative tasks if you have ultra wide lens in front (I had no it in above case – but I found that in some other occasions I had success even with running with 10mm m43 lens). Although gimbals are so popular, and with the reason, they are, of course, clumsy... I think that we have to have at least two cameras for comfortable usage of gimbal, one of which might be permanently tied with gimbal - constant putting on/off camera with balancing is not something that I enjoy. Actually, I'm in process of selling my Zhiyun Crane 2... Even if I have no prospect of usage of gears just for, say, two months, I'm selling without regret such expensive and fast-loosing-value technical adds... Who knows what will be the next... Olympus with even better Ibis? Or DJ Ronin S mini? What I find the most important is - impression that you have imagination to resolve tasks and problems in the creative way, which is power that is impossible to buy!1 point

@wolf33d interesting information - thanks. The internet isn't keen to tell you the weaknesses of various products! In terms of the size, I'm sure that lots of accessories are (or will be) available for making the camera bigger - if only there were accessories available for making a camera smaller and lighter!! Then I might buy a C700 and as many accessories as it takes to make it the size of an RX100 ???1 point
