  1. It's all Samsung NX1 (except for a couple of drone shots) with the Kinoseed bitrate hack (180mbs), using Andrew's Gamma DR profile. Lenses: Samsung 16-50 S, Rokinon 12mm and 85mm, plus some lensbaby. I used a couple LUTS by luts.iwltbap.com and FilmConvert in post. Filmed in 4K converted to ProRes for editing in Premiere. Yes, I know Premiere supports H.265, but I've had nothing but problems with H.265 files since the last update. Exported to 1080. What's it about? What do you call a ghost town that still has people living there? This documentary is a peek into the world of some folks that live in what others call a "ghost town." Haunted kewpie doll, boot fence, dream cowboys, custom caskets, and stories of healing are all there in the Dreamworld.

  2. I did a shoot yesterday with my 1DC and Contax Zeiss glass and loved the results. It was a nice reminder how great it is. Low light, color science, and full frame all great on it. Such a clean but beautiful image. Still gonna hold onto the 1DC until I do proper GH5 tests.

  3. I've been really inspired by some of the work done on this camera...Just wanted to create a topic where any NX1 owners can upload their latest films...If you like, feel free to share anything you think helped you get the image you arrived at...lenses used, LUTs used, etc. Here is my latest. Rokionon 35mm and Sigma 18-35mm lenses. Osiris LUTs.

  4. Plus people HAVE confused the dicussion and made it about how iphone video really is better than say.. a d750. It also gets weird when it's the newest iphone with 4k etc, trying to be fancy. Someone might use it to "simplify" and still say no one should ever shoot video on an iphone 6 -_- Regardless, being able to change focal length makes absolutely everything more appealing to me than a phone

  6. Canon has threatened ML if they touch the 1DC they will unleash their lawyers on them. It will more than likely never happen unfortunately. http://www.eoshd.com/2013/01/1d-x-has-traces-of-1d-c-firmware-but-magic-lantern-will-never-touch-1d-series-as-canon-threatens-potential-hackers-with-legal-trouble/

  7. Using C100 is what turned me on to ignoring sheets of numbers and start looking at real-world performance. It's wonderfully robust for such compressed footage. Stick a Ninja 2 on it with DNxHD 220x or similar and the footage is amazing, again, the pipeline has something good going on.

  8. The point has been missed a bit.... I'm not suggesting the iphone is a great tool for wedding videos... or that it is a cheap way to do it. All I'm saying is that the composition, editing, sound etc have made this look really good and something we often lose focus of

  9. Mate I've worked in the industry for 30 years, so any cheap shots these days is like water of a ducks back. Personally I think you can over advise people some times, and so I would say to Matt, think like a news cameraperson in this instance, and if you can't beat the echo, use it as atmosphere unless it's intolerable. Create an establishing shot so the minds eye accepts the location, and the echo will make sense. And live to air is not in my opinion any easier than short films, no take 2,3, or 4, no post, etc, etc, feature films I haven't worked on, but they would employ the best of the best I imagine, and the wages would be big. But I'll leave it at that because this advice is getting bigger that Ben Hur.

  10. I often come across deals that I think are really good. Both used and new. Often Im not in the market to buy at the time or its not what Im looking for. So, why not a thread where we tip each other about good deals and discounts. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation, connection or any other reason than feeling like it to why I share this. Recently I tipped the forum about Cyberphoto who are selling a Samsung NX1 + S Zoom + Battery Grip with warranty for a good price. Now its about them again. Yesterday they had an "Evening Deal" for just a few hours. It was 10% off on the E-M1ii. Today its an a6000. My guess this will be a reappearing type of deal. This is the same store that sent out 20% off on the NX1 and GX80 when they where brand new. The G7 was almost down to€200 at one point. So, it could be worth keeping an eye on. www.cyberphoto.se Both times the Evening Deal has been at the very top. To make it easier to spot in the future just look for the word "Kvällskampanj".

  13. Kisaha, audio preferences can be very subjective. And circumstances vary from shoot to shoot also which one is "better". So I don't say it is so clear cut which of the Audio Technica or Audix is "better". I agree Curtis Judd is not an expert specialist soundie (but there are very few of those on YouTube! Matt Price is the only independent one on YT who regularly updates), he is just a videographer generalist, but he is the best regular one of those on YouTube for audio info.

  17. Again I don't think anyone is arguing against your points. It's not moot because the point of the post is... look what you can do with an iPhone 7... The End. Sometimes the best camera made is the one you have with you.

  19. Like IronFilm said, just ask politely to turnoff the AC, and mention somwthing like "these pro microphones are very sensitive", it works 100%!! Except if it is really impossible to do (which 99.9% isn't). If you have the money get the Audix, or else get the Oktava.

  21. TURN OFF the air conditioning! ME64 is more a videographer's microphone, while an Audix / AT / Oktova (which are all popular options) are entry level indie ones.

  22. for xmas my wife bought me the DJI Osmo Mobile and a Moondog Labs anamorphic lens. I shot a ton of footage with my iphone 7 at the womens march in los angeles. I don't think i'd shoot anything other than travel/personal videos with this combo, but it *is* a lot of fun. here's a sample ungraded clip. if you watch closely, you'll spot zach woods from the show, silicon valley.

  23. That's insane as canon doesn't care about the 1dc since it was a bomb - no one supports it including them, that's too bad... come on to my blog and maybe we can convince someone to take it on, ha! The 1dxm2 4k footage is crap compared to the 1dc, and now that the price has dropped, it's a truly amazing image for the price, but there are many many impediments to overcome to make it user friendly... it's brand new but please come and contribute your experience and knowledge: https://canon1dcuser.wordpress.com/

  24. I use AF-c a lot when I'm in run-and-gun mode, just move the focus point with the joystick. Its brilliant. I don't think you can refocus with AF-s after hitting record, IIRC that's why I use AF-c. I love the 18-55 and the 10-24, OIS is so good I don't miss IBIS on the A7rII at all, and that's not hyperbole, I sold a full-on Sony kit to move to twin XT2's for a year of traveling around the world. The 50-140 has the best stabilization of any zoom lens I've used, including the Canon 70-200 IS mkII. You can adjust the SS beyond top dial values with the rear control dial, turning it give you what's between SS on the dial. BUT - you can also set it to"T" and just use the rear control dial exclusively to control your SS. I have it set this way because I'm constantly flipping between stills and video and its easier/faster to scroll from 1/500 to 1/50 with the rear dial. I don't use a ND very often either, so I use the SS to adjust exposure after hitting record. Despite its quirks, its a great hybrid camera. Stills are fantastic, you can shoot raw + jpeg with your favorite film simulation, raw and pick a film simulation later with in cam develop mode (surprisingly quick/easy) or with LR. I have no regrets about leaving Sony and leaving FF for the XT2.

  25. I'm considering adding the GH5 as my second cam for slow mo, drone shots, etc - but they are very different tools. They both offer stunning images (and if you know how to light, compose, direct) you can make amazing work on either one. remember some of the most iconic images and films ever made were on equipment that is now worth nothing. I would say figure out which one best suits exactly the kind of work you do and hope to do and go with it. If you have an amazing reel, no one cares what you shot it on. And when your client insists on Red for some stupid reason - fine, just rent it. You need to have the best tool to allow you to realize your personal vision when you're not on someone else's dollar. And I disagree - the 1dxm2 is no competitor to the gh5, I have done several tests and the 4k footage from the 1dxm2 is junk compared to the 1dc - I will be buried with my 1dc. Never giving up the magic that camera spits out...

  28. The codec on the 5d3 isn't what killed it. It's the shit pipeline Canon put in between the 14 bit data coming off the sensor and before the data is written to the card. The codec itself is fine; it's doing a fine job lightly compressing the crappy "baked in" data its getting. Case in point, the 1dc in 1080p24 mode didn't look any better, and neither does the 1dx II (and they are using MJPEG). Whatever Canon does to that image (going from 14 bit raw to the 8 bit output) is what kills the image. Codec is the least of your problems - the c100 original had a puny 24 Megabit AVCHD file and walked all over the 3 aforementioned cameras in 1080p24. The lowly XC-10's 1080p24 does as well; same codec I believe in 1080p mode (ALL-I or IPB). Moral = line skipping / binning is not your friend.

  29. same with Amira. It's actually nicer in general using Amira ProRes than any Red Raw I've used. Just light-weight and amazing clean colour and range. Convenient and beautiful, what's not to like.

    Sell my 1DC for GH5?

Then again everyone and their mother are going to sell off their 1DCs and C100s and BMPCCs to buy the new GH5, so your work may be more differentiated by keeping the 1DC.

  35. GH5 on paper looks great, but until you film with it who knows. The 1DC is special and has a look that makes any owner ignore the lack of features. I was questioning the move to Panasonic as well, but I need low light and personally not sold on the 4/3s ... I was a huge DVX100 fan and loved Panasonic color science back in the early days. Until the GH5 is given the Phillip Bloom field test I would be happy hanging onto my 1DC or rent the GH5 and take it for a spin.

  36. Ciao! This is a music video I shot with GH4 and G7 (both with Natural profile, saturation -5, contrast -5). I shot it very quickly: two afternoon and an evening, one week between the 2 days of shooting and in that time I sold the GH4, so the second day of shooting was with the G7. I shot all handheld without shoulder rig except for a part of the indoor shot with the voodoo witch, where I used a tripod while she mix the potion. The drone scenes are shot on DJI Phantom 3 Professional (not mine, we called a pilot), which is a little too "digital" for my taste. I used Andrew's EOSHD Pro Color for Panasonic and I'm really happy about the skin tones and the overall colors. I also used FilmConvert's Kodak Vision3 5207 with grain 20%. Thank you Andrew p.s.: can you spot which is the GH4 and which is the G7?

  38. thank you so much for the kind words everyone. All i had with me was the nx1 body paired with 16-50s and a very unstable and cheap tripod, had to upgrade it btw cause i missed a lot of shots because of it. Sometime i used the tripod folded as a rig for better camera grip and stabilization. In terms of settings i have used Normal Gamma with sat -5, sharpness -10 and contrast -3. I had MB at plus 9. I did the edit in Final Cut Pro X where i just tweaked the exposure wherever was the case and apply an m31 LUT at 50% and warmed the overall look and feel by a notch. that's all i did. Thank you again for the support and the nice feedback. i put my heart to it and it seems that got to u which makes me proud. cheers.
