  1. it's pretty irritating they gave it to a guy who goes right ahead and shoots the test in rolling shutter mode showing us exactly what we expected based on our experiences with the bmpcc. isn;t it a given to use the global mode for a test of a camera who's key selling point over the previous model is the global shutter mode... I'd have rather seen unscripted footage with lots of movement and a bright sky and lots of shadow so I can decipher whats going on with the global shutter enabled. Come on BM give the camera to Andrew Reid next time and stop messing around.

  2. I love it. I've rigged it out to be just heavy enough to avoid micro-jitters. And I loving how skin tones are rendered. I struggled to get the GH4 someplace it didn't want to go for six months. Should have traded resolution for color and DR a long time ago. I'm much happier.

  5. Exactly… This looks like the same film convert pocket footage I have been seeing for the past two years... The retailer I talked to said they heard they are getting the 4.6k URSA sensors soon, but no word on these cameras or the 4.6k Ursa Mini… Doesn't sound like it is happening in january. Funny, in the comments he said he didn't need an IR filter… Maybe she changed into a black shirt later on in the day.

  6. From a comment response by Noam Kroll on vimeo: "Not sure how global shutter would affect dynamic range as I only shot with rolling shutter" That surprised me for sure.

  9. Your methods sometimes seem like taking a military obstacle course to work rather than taking the bus. You do know that taking the bus gets you there faster, right? And keeps you dry when it rains, or warm when it's cold... etc. I mean, that you want to tinker around with your 6 years old T2i is all well... but to me it seems like a lot of wasted money and energy. And although you claim it to be, it will never reach Alexa-like picture quality. Do you have any actual experience shooting other cameras? If you did, you might realize what you're missing out on. Especially rolling these cameras out in the field. Don't understand why you haven't just gotten yourself a BMPCC already. Or a G6... G7... anything, really. I think in a few years you look back and say 'I was so stubborn, haha, I guess I was just looking for a challenge but ended up limiting myself'. But hey, we all got to make our choices, see how they pan out and learn from them. Though, if I stuck to shooting stills with my 2MP Kodak, I would really be seriously missing out by now and be outclassed by any camera, smartphone and webcam. We're in a digital era. You can't really allow yourself to fall behind. And technologic advancements are not here to hurt us, they're here to make our lives that much easier. I'd embrace it, not fight it. That would for sure leave you with more time and energy for other things... people want to create, be creative... sounds like those people could spend their time and energy more wisely than trying to find cumbersome solutions to problems that could be handled with more effectively. My 2 cts.

  12. Yeah the idea that the screen is almost twice the size of the camera is kinda silly. The ability to use your iPhone or a small GoPro-like screen seems like the best option, but it doesn't seem possible, or at least cost effective. For me, the best scenario would be the camera on an L-Bracket with a c-mount lens... Talk about a small set up. Hopefully a third party will introduce a smaller screen... Maybe a screen that can hook into the battery on the back... A third party battery that has two terminals... One that powers the camera and another that powers a small screen designed specifically for the battery and BMMCC.

  13. Here's a test clip: NX1 UHD converted to 422 vs the VA recording in 422 (not converted). The video here is 1080p h.264, so it might be kinda hard to tell the difference, but it looks like the NX1 had less banding. If you can't tell what you needed from the clip, I can upload full-sized stills from each device. LIghting test.mov

  14. Actually I think the focus by wire of the 16-50S is quite amazing. It's very precise and adjustable, and the most important, it's "linear", which means I can even put it on the follow focus and it works perfectly and stops where I want. To be honest it's smoother than many canon L lense I've used. It's not the same as those bad focus by wire system many people are complaining about. On the other hand, the focus by wire system of the sony E mount lenses is not "linear", if you turn the focus ring faster or slower, the step size of the lens focus changes, and you end up with a wrong scale on the follow focus and it's totally unusable. I'm not sure whether every E mount lenses are like this, but the ones I've used, they are. This variable manual focus step size makes the E lenses quite unusable for manual focus, because it's quite unpredictable.

  22. Speaking of monitors... is there a way to connect to a camera's wifi (like the panasonic app) using something like Google Glass? Are there options out there to monitor video through glasses? I would be interested in something like this.

  25. Sony and Panasonic seem to got what it takes. If you can, I'd say LX100 all the way. Just depends on your budget, but RX100 isn't supercheap or anything. Not sure what those recent Panasonic LX100-like cameras sell for, they might interest you. Recently I picked up a Nikon S9900 for just a little over 200 EUR as a travel cam (plenty zoom flexibility, vari-angle screen, nice bridge between LX100 and FZ1000). Video's not is definitely not as great as the Panasonics (and the zoom mechanism is very very loud). Guess if you want small and zoom 1/2.3" is it. But then you get the accompanied compact look, with low dynamic range and everything. Mainly gotten it for stills anyways as the crop helps with tele and keeping the subject in focus. For video you might want to avoid 1/2.3". 1" or bigger is pretty nice. This is a nice overview of cameras that generally would be interesting: http://geizhals.eu/?cat=dcam&asuch=&bpmax=&v=e&hloc=at&hloc=de&hloc=pl&hloc=uk&hloc=eu&plz=&dist=&mail=&bl1_id=30&sort=n&xf=86_0.55~70_3 . - kinda thinking about it... recently I saw a pretty decent GM1 kit deal. I'd rather get something like that as B cam. Might be some nice deals to be found in your area as well.

  27. You aren't the only one who feels this way. Others have just give up on posting dissenting opinions because of how exhausting it can be defending them when, ultimately, they're just opinions, not critiques of others' taste. But no one likes rain on their parade. Birdman was fun. But generally Inarritu isn't my taste, either.

  29. Right now is VIVID my best settings: Color: Red x0.95, Green x0.95. Blue x1.00, Saturation 0, Sharp. -10, Contrast -5, Hue -3°, MBL -8, 0-255 Vivid is too much saturated and contrasty by default so I put contrast and MBL down to achieve better DR and keep colors correctly saturated without addional grading. Below is screen form video (just changed luminance from 0-255 to 0-235 in Premeire), no grading and RAW converted to jpg without any editing. I have to say I really like the result - by default is video much nicer that un-edited RAW. According my testing is DR similar to DynamicDR gamma but with better colors (BTW I think the pink on the face correspond with reality - it was really cold :-)) I will do more tests but I like so far... maybe I will play with hue and satuation a little and use color checker board. EDIT: I would now put hue to 0 as the result is probably too pinky

  31. Only the studio 4k version has SDI (as seen in that pic) because it doesn't record internally. the micro cinema camera has no SDI. HDMI only for monitoring. I'm very happy that a monitor is not integrated into this unit. hopefully it will have a positive effect on battery life. but more importantly, I plan to treat the camera body like I would an Alexa Mini that's been miniaturized even further, allowing me to place my SmalHD 502 monitor where i need it for any given situation -- behind it when on sticks, forward when shoulder mounted, or with a 15ft HDMI cable run when car mounted so i can monitor the shot while hiding in the backseat.

  34. Daisy chain sounds quite doable. I've seen people doing this, however I'm not sure how much the latency between the monitors would be. Ideally if the monitor is good enough you shouldn't notice any significant delay.

    Your ideal NX1 Settings

@ kidzrevil ... I think the 16-50S is a fine lens and if you were only going to have one Samsung AF lens ... this would be it. It pretty superb in every way. As mentioned, I think it's perfect for run & gun street type stuff. AF is usually excellent and the VR is very good as well .. especially with DIS on. The manual focus isn't as nice as an AI-S lens but it's dampened nicely. Feels a million times better than Nikons range of 1.8 primes.

  36. It looked great, as his stuff usually does. Interesting little story, even though the writer in me thinks the video shot of her should have been in the present, since Noam already introduced a supernatural element when the stalker vanished into thin air. But I digress, it looked great... If only it had an LCD.

  37. Thanks for all the replies! That is exactly how I feel with mine right now. Something in there is definitely grinding. That and all the outside things together clearly tell me that something fishy is going on with this one. I read that one too when I initially went for the lens. I really like the results but I guess I am just a bit worried that the replacement might have some flaw inside that I can't spot that easily like the outside notches. Especially for a non-professional. I don't want my lens to randomly break in the future because quality control took a day off on my unit. But then again, I think you are right and I would probably love the Voigtlander the same if I went with it instead. I guess it comes down to Image quality and not so good build vs high quality build and handling but a little less quality. I think I'll give the SLR Magic another chance but if the replacement comes in a similar condition than my current one, I will try to avoid that company from that point on and jump ship to the Voigtlander. Fingers crossed!

  41. Hi Dustin, I bought the YN 600 (partly because of that same video), but it has a huge flaw no one talks about enough... its fan is very noisy! A dealbreaker for interviews! That's why I bought the Aputures... they're completely silent, and that's when I realized the huge magenta color cast the Youngnuos had. But Lintelfilm said the new versions are cri95... so just make sure you avoid that fan. All depends on your style and what you do with that light. For interviews I mainly use soft light, so a powerful LED in a softbox does the job. And I would say I've needed the batteries 60% of the times I've shot something the last 5 years (try start asking for power sockets, and start connecting cables everywhere in the middle of a wedding), and it has made my life easier 99% of the times. When it comes to lumen/lux... The Excelvans 1040S are 10000 lux each, not too far from a classic 1K. And they're going for 199€ right now. I've used plenty of gear these past years, and I can say LEDs make my day... All depends on your needs. But the days LEDs where seen as less "pro" have passed.

  42. Has anyone done much testing in 'normal gamma' with contrast dialed all the way down? I just figured out how to do it (definitely a noob) and shot a quick test and highlight recovery is significantly better without a ton of noticable banding so far (some). shadows don't appear to benefit as much, but still. just wondering if anyone else has tried this and what the results were.

  43. There's always a downside - lighting is a compromise. In this case it's lumens. A YN300 has less output than ONE 55w biax lamp. Not one fixture, but one tube (biax tube 2900 lumens, YN300 2280 lumens, according to their site). You'd need three of them to surpass one dual biax fixture. I know people really love the idea of LED panels, but... I really like having a lot of light available. We're just now seeing panels with a really useful output, and they're in the $1k range. I can get a 575 HMI for that if I shop around. "But you can't run that on a battery". True, but in the last 5 years of shooting, I've never shot an interview or a project where I needed battery lights - there's always been power within reach, and when I've needed light outdoors, 2000 lumens wouldn't even register on the sensor. If I were doing news or something, maybe - there are careers where LED panels can make your day easier, I'm sure... but I get at least a few minutes setup time in my kind of gigs. If you generally shoot within an extension cord's reach, you can get a lot more light for reasonable money. I'm not an LED hater, but it seems like every kid who buys a DSLR starts shopping for LEDs when they really could do better. (Not saying the OP or contributors are "kids", but LEDs have become a newbie lust item it seems - think it through before buying!)

  46. Every time i walk into one of Inarritu's movies, I'm very optimistic. But I never feel quite satisfied by the experience. Couldn't quite connect with this one either. It was beautifully rendered certainly. But looking back i think my issue with it was that this had an hour's worth of story in the first and third act, with 90 minutes of episodic survival sequences that (for me) stalled the plot. meaning, you could have replaced all those scene with a "two weeks later..." title card and you'd have no meaningful issues with the narrative, character arcs, etc. Loved the beginning and ending though.
