  1. GH5 IOS test, 8 to 10 bit comparison and also to the GH4

  2. @jonpais Fact is, 99% of people NEVER hold the GH5 in their hands. Most AF talk is speculation and assumption. Furthermore there are surely fanatic GH5-fanboys defending the camera, even it was complete crap (for sure it is NOT). And paid "social media marketers", paid to spread / advocate the most positive aspects of this product and fight criticism... On the other side, there are enough Pana-hater, trying to question and miscredit nearly all features of the GH5. Why? No clue...Fanboyism and hate aren't very useful for curious potential buyers, but this "war" does influence their decision for sure...It's all about money and fanatism - and this is quite sad...Take a look at the comments on this video - "The GH5 AF-War": Let's wait until one can regularly buy and properly operate the GH5 and then praise or hate it...It will be more than fair...

  4. The GH5 is the first time I am willing to trade dynamic-range for ergonomics. I am absolutely sick of rigging up cameras, if not with external monitors, than with shoulder-rigs and whatnot. For my personal shooting style, the 5-Axis on-sensor IBIS, high-res EVF and LCD, and 10-bit internal, make up for the lack of dynamic-range and usable 12,800ISO (which I wouldn't even use, anyway).

  5. Hell I can't stand using them to make something for fun, I sure as hell can't see them as a main A camera in a 200 millon dollar film, with what little outward controls they have, not counting the cramped space, and no weight to talk about. I am sure it Can be done, but why? It's not like one person is just operating these high end cameras, they are surrounded by people. Now a guy up on a boom, well yeah, but that is not the Main camera all the time. This Miller guy has to be one of the best graders of Pansonic stuff I have seen LoL. Is this camera, the GH5 That much better! 10 bit adds that much, and they are not even using the higher bit rate stuff. What gives?

  6. I too am excited about getting my hands burned by a Sony camera that's melting from recording 5 minutes of RAW.

  7. Only in the E mount, though they eventually plan on releasing them in the X mount- means Fuji is gonna get much more serious about video for their own cameras? http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/02/22/fujinon-announce-new-fast-affordable-zooms-for-e-mount-mk-18-55-t2-9-and-mk-50-135-t2-9/

  8. James Miller ran a test in which he recorded externally from GH5 with Vlog and he either applied the LUT in post or baked it in. Even with an external recorder that offers high bitrates and very good codecs, the difference is quite big. See the color smearing ('YUV chroma smearing' ?) in many places and the color shifts in the shadows. I believe using baked in LUTs with external recorders should give better results with any camera with an HDMI log output. I hope Panasonic implements a way to have baked in LUTs with Vlog internally. But I guess for now you can have an external recorder with the baked in look and an internal without.

  9. It is very good but it is also thanks to 5x slower motion plus stability of quite heavy camera - my setup weights 4,7kg (ursa with ssd "module", small battery and 70-200 lens).

  10. @mercer Thanks! This last year had me finally operating on a few more projects, but still so much to learn. @Kisaha Thanks, the goats were interesting to film as they love to perch right above a busy highway and kick rocks down into traffic! I actually had a bit of difficulty making them look good in footage, as they were in the shade on grey rock with dirty white coats......separating them was interesting. Also, completely agree about the C100 and am unfortunately having to try and sell my F3 as the bulk and intimidation is simply too much for the projects I have to work on.

  11. I don't know about you but 6400 is easily usable on the GH5. And 12800 in a pinch. I am just floored how much better it is. This does not seem possible! Damned if I know? I guess we will find out soon.

  12. Not just that, but also statement like AF is not good blablabla.....because in simple terms the AF System wasn't used as it should be. B

  16. I'd never expected that Mattias Burling would ever touch a Sony camera. He used to be an avid Sony hater (the only Sony I saw on his youtube channel was an FS100). And now, he is here as an evangelist of Sony technology. Hmm. On the other hand, he is really a knowledgeable guy, and worth reading his articles, and watching his videos, absolutely. On this topic he is delivering really great contents, so a big thanks, that he is taking the time of sharing his experimenting. I am a recent fan of medium format film photography, and I guess I'd change from Mamiya 6x7 over to Mamiya 6x4.5. I've been quite reluctant to buy anything smaller than FF (Kleinbild); so this thread of discussion was revelational to me: no GH5, no A6500 to me. I'll buy the first A7 with 4K and touch screen along with this adapter; touch-to-magnify for manual focusing while recording video is so brilliant on Sony.

  17. Hi, some months ago I found peer-to-peer transfer websites and now I always use them to send large files. They have no file size limits. My favorite is takeafile.com because is more professional (robust to short net disconnections and so)

  18. My wish for an improvement was an HDMI connector besides the USB connector on the yaw motor. And a good and bright and light Zhiyun monitor. Tiny, but a little bigger than this: The Panasonic users probably wonder why ...

  20. @lucabutera and As experienced constructor you probably considered already the following aspects: eg the extensively used Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 weights about 1.500g eg the outstanding Canon EF 300mm F2.8 weights about 2.400g The 300mm prime is - when used with the NX1 in slomo video or 4K - OUITSTANDING...Simply mindblowing... So it would be very nice (if possible) to consider a minimum of 1.500g for a lens like the common 70-200mm to use with your adapter. I hope the electric motor of the 30mm Samsung lens would be powerful enough for this...Thank you again for your work!

  21. It's not about the bottleneck, it's about the amount of data being continually transferred. That produces heat. There's a reason BMD RAW cameras have giant heatsinks and fans. Even the good old 5D2 has a substantial upswing in temperatures when shooting ML RAW.

  22. I always appreciate to know the camera I work with... call me picky (not necessarily pixel peeper : D all the time, at least hehe) I recall the finest example that our woman is always the most attractive female for us or it should be ;-)

  26. 100% Agree with this, I run with an F3 (S-log) + Gemini 4:4:4, and they're built like bricks, never had any issues. Often my clients have difficulty re-focusing from "need 4K" to "need awesome image quality", but after the shoot when I start going through the dpx footage, all debates stop. Biggest downside for me: It's a light cinema camera, but it still heavy as a cinema camera compared to stuff like the C100s. I'm usually a one-man band, so that means a lot more work, but if that doesn't bother you, I can't recommend better IQ for the price. In addition, the native FZ mount can adapt to pretty much anything other than E-mount for the price of a cheap adapter. My reel, shot mostly with available light, with this rig for demonstration:

  27. 6x9 is obviously slightly wider than 6x7, but 645 is the APS-C. This graphic shows it quite clearly: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/35mm_MF_LF_Comparison.svg
    1 point
  28. Its just our opinion Im not right nor wrong. Neither are you For me 645 is to save film. 6x9 is for nice prints. 6x6 is for Square and pocketable. 6x7 is the odd APS-C. Smaller than my prefered 6x9 but not small enough to save film like the 645. I dont think it being a macro have anything to do with it. Google "swirly bokeh". Its a very common characteristic in medium format lenses and many of my MF cameras has it. So does alot of full frame lenses like the helios.
    1 point
  29. Yeah, 6X7 isn't small at all. 645 is the APS-C equiv. 6X7 is what Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts, et al used in the 90s. You can get incredibly detailed prints from it. Confusingly, in the stills world they call 645 "Super 35", somewhat confusingly. Meaning a super version of 35mm film, nothing to do with the cinema meaning.
    1 point
  30. 645 is the aps-c among medium format, 6x7 is the ideal format for printing (and larger than 645) ,etc... 6x6 and 6x9 are the odd sizes which waste film unless you really need the crop options, or use that weird ratio in some digital medium. Fieldcurvature in a macro lens? I doubt it.

  31. If I click this image and then click it again to zoom 1:1, wait until its loaded, I feel there is enough resolution to go around. When I can see individual hairs on a horse nose on an already crops image I say its enough for a photo. Let alone a simple HD or 4K image. Here is a screen dump of the zoom on flickr. And this was at the lens softest setting. At f11 or even f16 the detail is insane.

  32. I never heard about quick sync. So I googled it, it seems it is not compatible with Davinci Resolve nor Adobe Premiere/after effects. So Im thinking going AMD ryzen all the way in a couple of weeks.

  36. @Kisaha As reading out of your postings, you are making a living out of filming Kisaha. So, you want to earn money...Jumping into the "every year a new camera" race doesn't contribute to making profit. The NX1 is a very nice cam with flaws, as other (much more hyped and expensive) cameras too...So you have to ask yourself, if your clients/audience will see a difference between the NX1 and a "NewestHypedCamera". Probably not. Review forums (like DPReview & co.) are a kind of parallel universe, having nothing to do with reality of normal Joes (as audience) or with getting payed jobs. It's a world in which gear guys film some months with camera A, get tired of it, trade it and buy a new WOW-cam. After maximum 5 months they get tired of it, trade it (with loss) and buy another system. Content wise? Mostly ZERO...Only (oftenly) exagerated gear talk, pixel peeping, armchair expertise and so on... I invested 65 Euros some days ago for a survey under 461 Facebook German participants (all relevant age groups, men/women, etc.) on Facebook. You know what? 78 % of them watch video on their smartphones/tablets, another 17 % watch on PC / laptop, only 5 % watch videos on TV. The best one is: from the 17 % watching videos on PC, a vast majority not even has a FullHD resolution... ;-) So the pixel peepers live in a parallel world and dream about the 16K future and numerous Hollywood jobs - they will never get...The reality is max. 1080p. Same for corporate clients... So...Get your money in good promotion for your business and keep on your work with the NX1, if you like it. Stop living in the parallel world of gear heads...You will never get a paid job from gear heads. It's simply losing time, energy and money.

  37. The biggest advantage of moving to a larger format, even if it is film based or digital based, is Lens Diffraction, ergo the lack of it. The bigger you go film, sensor area wise the bigger you can go F stop wise or actually closed down. I know it is always ass backward. That is why there was a F64 club back in the Ansel Adams, Weston days using 8 x 10 cameras. You can get tons of stuff in focus without distortion. Maybe not totally stopped down but damn close. That is the big problem with m4/3 it creeps in a f8 a lot and damn sure is at F11. So this Speed Booster could be damn interesting for that reason alone.
