  1. OK, some advancements - namely a way to speed up applying mods as soon as the camera wakes up from sleep. See more here https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/doc/Boot_Process_and_Speeding_up_Mods.md Also, a small poll and explanation: If you don't want to do it from telnet, wait a few days, there will be a nicer, more automated way to do it. If you are starting other things (bitrate hacks, whatever) - please do check if they are running already. You can use keyscan as test as it will return 0 only if it's not already running, like this /opt/usr/devel/bin/keyscan /dev/event0 /dev/event1 /opt/usr/devel/bin/ && my_program Just to make things clear - it's not modifying the firmware.I have no intention to mess with firmware as I have no easy way to repair my camera. We slightly tweak the "read only" rootfs (like we already do for BT hack - we just change a single line in script) and move our scripts from SD card to internal filesystem - the one mounted under /opt as "read write" by default. It's not going to brick a camera, I have even put a swap file to extend RAM on that filesystem and everything worked. NB, I have been using and testing this for two days now - no side effects. The main difference is that right now, when you pop out the SD card with mods and put in a clean one - your camera acts as if it was neved modded. With this it would be modded even without a SD card (ie, it would be modded with every SD card). All modifications are fully reversible and would be reversible from aforementioned utility. So, a small poll - do you want me to make an installer that will install mods to the camera internally in order to work faster?

  2. I often feel the reason people are so in awe of cameras Red and Arri are because they are invariably used in productions where there's a team of highly skilled professionals working with good lighting, locations and post-production/grade. They see the finished shots and immediately think its down to the camera, not all the other stuff that's going into it. I feel my work has improved massively in the last year through nerding up on lighting techniques and working with some great people. Invest your money in those sort of things...

  3. Your motivation for making films, especially independent films, can't be solely about profit. Your passion to tell stories must be at the core of why you do this work. Otherwise go be a dentist. People will always be willing to have their teeth fixed. Willing to pay for art? Not so much. As far as making a living as a filmmaker there are several options downstream from big budget Hollywood director. Those options become less and less appealing by the time you get to something like "Briss videographer", but they exist. As far as cutting through the clutter and achieving mainstream, critical, and financial success? Those projects are rare birds indeed. It's why filmmakers idolize people like Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Steven Soderbergh. Because they did it. As JCS said earlier in the thread, you simply have to make an exceptional film. I can remember seeing Christopher Nolan's Memento in a theater. No big stars, just a phenomenally interesting concept executed at the highest level. The trajectory from there to Inception was not guaranteed, but the promise was certainly there from the beginning. Keep working. Get better. Find your level. I'm pulling for you.

  5. This is all very subjective, but the reason I'm excited about future Kine cameras is that to me the images coming out of the Kine sensors all have a nice matte like characteristic as opposed to the glossy feel of a lot of modern cameras. Feels very organic and cinematic. I know those words get thrown around a lot, sometimes to the point of wanting to claw your eyes out sometimes, but I can't think of any other way to describe it.

  7. BTW, how do you figure 1000 adapters. Just put an EF on there and leave it. Voila you have an EF camera. But if its an EF bolted to the camera it just means less lenses to choose from.
    2 points
  8. You dont even need adapters. Plenty of m4/3 cover s35 (all rokkinon for example) and there are plenty of nice m4/3 lenses. Adapters and speedboosters is just another option/tool. Sony have understod it. They use a short flange for s35 and FF. And it seems popular. But since Sony doesnt allow other companys to use the E-Mount, MFT on s35 remains the best, most versitile and least painful lens/sensor combo imo.

  9. I wish we as consumers would react more vocally and in unison when the oligarchs play these petty games of taking away their toys. They should compete for market share by innovating rather than denial of services. I am sick of still having to find ways around limitations in all these ecosystems, when I know full well that everything I want to do could be fully supported on one PC, phone, camera, etc if the companies that slogan themselves as trying to change the world stopped trying to slow it down to maximise revenue. Bah humbug:/ Edit: ... and when a camera gets 'hacked', the consumer is telling the company to its face that it has not utilised the full potential of its offering and the response should not be to bury its head in the sand.

This looks 1000x better than stuff I'm seeing on this camera or any other. once again, it ain't the camera always, it's the grade (also dp, lenses, editor, lighting, etc etc)

  13. This is great comparison. I am using glidecam almost every day (couple years now) - the best tool in my toolbag I can imitate tripod, dolly, slider, jib, if i had to take just one thing with me beside the camera i would take the glidecam. No firmwares, no batteries, easy to handle, can take it as carry on baggage, can take it to the mountains for a hike, can use it in the rain (DGS version with improved gimbal), most people doesnt pay attention to it, it is quite stealthy, can go through the crowd with it. It requires a lot of training but it pays of.

  14. They had a silly little rendered image on the site before: ... so yeah, it seems they're really willing to go with that cinema camera formfactor: sensor in a box á la RED, ARRI Mini, Terra, Axiom indeed. Or even BMMCC. Could still be a final degree project of some students trying to see how people react to something like this... but I'm willing to consider the fact that this might just be legit. I don't neccessarily need 4K, but I do appreciate 2K and some wiggle room overscale. Say the BMCC 2.5K but then in BMMCC formfactor (why is this not a thing yet anyways?!!). I'd love it if everything is generic and non-propriatary. It being affordable and 4K... I think they must've gone with the MFT mount and 4/3" sensor. Just maybe APS-C. Sure would be nice if it did GoPro-like resolutions/framerates (4K up to 30p, 2.7K at 60p, 1440p at 80fps, 1080p at 120fps and 720p at 240fps). Global shutter would be incroyable... therefor I really don't think so. Boooh! Yeah, built-in NDs not going to happen either. LOG sounds feasible enough; even the Z Camera E1 has got Z-Log. RAW or ProRes a bit far fetched, although I guess, that's what a digital cinema cameras should really be all about... the Blackmagic Pocket and Micro got the message. Maybe in the pricey one. Storage... maybe just generic SSDs or that new M2-type storage perhaps. Good audio interface. User-programmable buttons and dials everywhere. Box/body accessoires. Basically it should almost be like a cage, able to mount stuff all over it; rails, arms, attachments, grips/handles... some provided by them as options, but the main idea: you can mount your own accessoires, be it EVF, monitor/recorder wherever the heck you like. If it turns out to be somewhat of a crossover between the Terra and the BMCC2.5K, I might just be down for something like that.

The OP seems to be musing about some magic formula. Film execs have been thinking the same thing since the 20's. The answer is, "there isn't one". Good stories, powerfully told and technically well-crafted often die. Meanwhile, there's a huge audience for (what I feel anyway) is pure crap. (I have no clue why every movie now has a "marvel" logo and adults go to see superhero films by the millions. I love me some "escapist" entertainment, but I got my limits!!!) One big differentiator is a hook or gimmick - Blair Witch for instance - some hated it but I found it a decent flick and very, very "new" at the time. That "Tangerine" flick, filmed on the iPhone - that got people curious, and many reviewers felt it was a very good film (and that the iPhone's particular color rendering actually worked and wasn't just a gimmick). Having something that gets your film talked about can help. But "new" or unique is very hard in this era. A lot of it is likely pure luck, or the luck of catching the eye of someone with connections or a "voice" that gets heard in the media or whatever - someone that champions the work and starts things snowballing. The key - if you want to do this for a living - is make compelling content in a way that you won't lose a lot (or any) money. So you can go on to the next one vs. bankruptcy. Many people are succeeding at that as well.

  21. I am exactly wondering the same thing. I am considering switching to a gimbal, but I just want to mount my camera and go. I don't want to deal with any headaches. I am using the flycam nano as well and it still works really well for me. Any huge advantages with the gimbal system over a flycam?

  22. I think the marketing campaign is working. People are wagging their tongues and fingertips about this mystery newcomer. Even though a lot of the discussions are harshly negative, the talk is still going on and people seem frustrated that they don't know what the product is. The irritation comes from a need for information. I love having new makers of camera around to rustle a few feathers. Everybody deserves a chance. Judge when the product is in your own hands.

  23. I'm getting an old Red because every time I look at images it goes Alexa/Amira then Red then the rest. Actually Panasonic Varicam looks to be stunning but it's new and outta price range. a 2nd hand scarlet X can be had for half the price of a c300 mkii. Less convenient yes, but the picture is amazing, redcode is a genius raw codec and it's got an EF mount. if you can be bothered to deal with a Red One MX it's even cheaper. no built in NDs, no XLRs or phantom power (EDIT: both have phantom power, sorry), expensive accessories and... A world class image. then all that's left is to become good enough at lighting/directing/storytelling to justify owning the bastard if you want a cheap good image that's easy to use, a second hand C100 with a Ninja 2 is excellent. Only 1080p but absolutely excellent, and very easy to use.

  24. Same reasons why I sold my DS1. I saw great things shot with it, and the price is right, but I need something a little less time consuming and foolproof which is why I'm going to look at the DJI Osmo for now.

Getting people to watch and love your movie is easy. Simply make a great movie. This will result in the movie getting shared (word of mouth, link via email, text, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and if the viral coefficient is greater than 1.0, the movie has a chance to become exponentially popular and thus successful ("viral").

  27. For a laugh, i'll break down this email from a salesman's/ executive producer's point of view. "Greetings! - denotes all times of day and suggests something festive is entailed. Yes, we actually exist and have a voice. - you don't know who we are but you did at some point, but you have forgotten. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by all the support. - OK, even if you don't remember us, everyone else does. (Classic 'humblebrag'). And because of that, we are only sharing the following email to you—our early adopter email list. - FYI, you are special and unique and part of a private club who got in first. Aren't you lucky? We have looked forward to sending this email for months. You should know that we will not publish this anywhere else. That means you are the first to know. - you owe us your attention because we have invested a lot of time on this product exclusively for your benefit, and you have such a unique opportunity here because we haven't told the world about it yet because you are our favorite person. When we tell everyone, we can't make any promises on your VIP status. I bet many of you have wondered, “What’s the deal with Craft?" There has been an outpouring of interest for Craft from all over the world and from all walks of life—from Hollywood, indies, corporate marketing departments, agencies, and amateurs. They have reached out by the thousands trying to figure out what we are working on. - (more humblebrag) My lord, have you been missing out! For over a year, we have been developing the Craft Camera—a new system that we believe will help users tell better stories. - we have developed a system to make you a creative genius, you are a craftsman and we are called Craft, geddit? On April 18th around 12pm EST, we will announce Craft Camera on craftcamera.com. This announcement will include initial information, a first glimpse of the Craft Camera, and we will start taking initial reservations. - Sshhh, listen, here are some hard facts. We are committing to a time and place for one time only. We will blow you away with a few seconds of footage and allow you to give us your credit card details, BUT only if you are on time and in the right place. Since Craft Camera is still in development, we won’t be releasing every single detail because we hope to get feedback from reservation holders before we publish final details. - in case you aren't impressed, don't worry, you haven't been given all the information and glimpses yet, be patient and get in line anyways. We will figure this spec stuff out eventually once we receive enough complaints to warrant changes. A reservation will require a $500 deposit, your name, email, and phone number. Reservations will only be available on craftcamea.com and will be 100% refundable. Your deposit will be deducted from the total price once you place an order at a later date. - (classic close) Absolutely no risk involved. But wait there's more... As a reservation holder, you will also receive a 10% discount off your final order along with some additional perks like first looks, priority reservations on future products and a few other surprises. - (classic time sensitive bonuses) Please note we are offering a limited number of reservations which is why we wanted you to know about this first. This means when we hit our limit we will stop taking reservations. No exceptions. The reservations are first come first serve and when the cameras ship, we will do so in the order that the reservation was placed. - remember, this deal is exclusive to you and time sensitive. This is urgent! The Craft Camera comes in 2 models. There are 4K and HD models with a price range between $699 and $2899 depending on the configuration. Initial units will ship late 2016. - (actual information, vague, but actual information). Comforting because facts make you feel good, right? But not to many or you will commit from informed deliberation rather than impulse, which is not cool for us. I will leave you with this—we believe there is a huge need for Craft Camera. We believe it is a revolutionary product that will give production alums a great tool to do things they couldn’t do before while opening up storytelling through motion pictures to a whole new generation. - (rehash of making you a creative genius theme) You will have an advantage amongst your peers. You will be Spielberg, or maybe Jim Jarmusch... at the very least. With that said, we understand Craft Camera might not be for you and...we are fine with that! We will still treat you with respect and we hope the same from you. - seriously, no pressure. I am truly humbled by all the support, and I hope you become a part of the Craft family. - (humblebrag,) we have heritage and will be around forever. Keep telling beautiful stories. - we are on your side, you artist you *pinches cheek*. Monies? What's that? Scott Brag(g) - Mr. S. Humble... Founder of Craft Digital Systems Inc. " - the absolute boss and the ducks nuts. That was fun (for me). Having sold stuff from Kirby vacuum cleaners to tvc airtime, its a trip down memory lane. I wouldn't touch this kit with a ten foot pole. A bit too sleazy for me. If it's a young company then I would ditch the bullet-benefit-close-bonus approach and just talk about the things you are trying to solve for your target demographic. Visuals, ergonomics, mobility, compatibility... etc. (even if its just your intentions, with no hard specs to announce)

  28. I don't think you'd get an "MF Look" though. People talked about an MF look for The Revenant, but that was shot with a huge sensor and they needed MF lenses to cover it and used hassy lenses that were designed for a 6x6cm image. Then there's the 645 format, which is closer to FF 35 but still pretty big. I don't know that you'd see much difference other than any specific character that comes from the lens (or from only the center of the lens without a speedbooster). When you get into "character" you may have to go farther afield than MF glass that was designed to be really precise. I've been shooting video with 1960's era Canon FL lenses on the NX1 and it really does have a gorgeous look, probably good for music video or fashion stuff, kind of like it has the perfect amount of diffusion yet is still very sharp - and the color is really gorgeous and a little muted. But hey, I'm tearing up a zoom to paint all the insides silver and make a really flare-heavy lens, so to each their own. But the FLs and wildly jacked-with lenses are going for specific character rather than optical perfection. I shot color and B&W on Mamiya 6x7 for years and I can't say there was anything specific about it other than amazing quality when you mix great glass with really big media. I still have my 4x5" view camera, same deal. Though i could stick an old petzval lens on that thing and get some wild stuff certainly (but a large format petzval may not be as badass on a sensor 1/100th the size or whatever the math is). Anyway, post some tests as you progress with this, we're all geeks here!

This is a really weird post Policar... I don't understand how you can dismiss this lens on the aesthetics of it's image when only a press release has been released. It's a Canon cine zoom so it will probably look and perform great. You act like people who are using it would be compromising their precious artistic integrity somehow and that all people who do video work without artistic motivations are hacks who are below the great minds of this forum. Then you assert that the person you are quoting shouldn't be so small-minded...

  31. Yes, it could be impossible to turn off. The entire processing chain from sensor to H.265 bitstream could be done without any input from the software (except for selecting resolution and bitrate). I would bet money that it is possible to turn off noise reduction, since Samsung would be more than a little bit crazy to do it like that. However without proof it is still possible however improbable it might be.

  33. The Mini 4.6k looks more modern to me. Whether that's good or bad is subjective. The Terra has many benefits over the Ursa Mini 4.6k too - such as higher resolutions, higher FPS, much smaller, much lighter, much more modular, switchable shutter (the irony!), can be speed boosted, mount changeable, can be powered with smaller Sony batteries, SSD's...... If the image quality is up there with the Ursa Mini 4.6k, which I believe it will be (seeing previous footage from other models) - it's almost a no-brainer for many cinematic shooters.

    Craft Camera is coming!

I kinda agree, but then Kickstarter always has pitch videos, specs etc. A Kickstarter that came out and said 'we're making a cinema camera' and had perks of $500 selectable between HD and 4k isn't going anywhere. Even a Kickstarter that had a story about the company and the people and why they wanted to make a new camera and what they felt was needed and blah blah blah would still go somewhere, even without specs. One page saying 'CRAFT cinema camera: Coming soon. $500 down' That Kickstarter campaign ain't gettin off the ground.

  38. I think that most everything they did with this camera was for their TV's. Sharpening the image would be to give more of a WOW factor when watching home movies on their Samsung TV's. Being Samsung, I'm amazed that the NX1 is actually as good as it is. Most of what they do is pretty shite or else a sneaky copy of what Apple or some other company has already come up with. They are a shit company and they way they handle their camera business being a total failure is yet more proof. The image does look overly sharp to me but still ... I love the camera.
