If the C500 is not enough camera for you, it’s worth considering that perhaps the camera is not actually the issue. After all, if it’s good enough for a major motion picture... and with that said I as high a hopes as I have for the P4k, I’m not expecting it to live up to a C500. Just keeping it real.4 points

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
webrunner5 and one other reacted to Jim Giberti for a topic
I've seen some stunning work done on the C500 as I have with the C300... I mean seriously. JB is shooting some of his network narrative handheld with a BMMCC, just for one "local" example. Anyone can crap on anything if they want to but creatively speaking, any quality shooter/producer can make any number of cameras, tossed around this and other sites, produce brilliant imagery. It's like the the idea that no one is using _____ camera or ___ camera on big shoots. Well yeah, when you're spending tens of ks per day on production of course you use the most versatile, proven and adaptable cameras you can budget. But to equate that (as a lot of people do) into a sense that smaller/cheaper cameras can't produce the necessary image for quality story telling just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. We crossed that Rubicon a while ago.2 points -

DJI Ronin-S VS. the Zhiyun Crane V2?
JordanWright and one other reacted to DBounce for a topic
So I just got the DJI Ronin S and decided to try it with a couple of cameras. The cameras I have tested so far are the Panasonic GH5S and the Canon C200. The former is well suited to handheld work given it is fully supported with the tether cable which is included with the Ronin S. The C200 is a much heavier affair so I would not recommend using this camera handheld with the Ronin S. However, as luck would have it... that is several phone calls and emails to Glide Gear would have it ? they now have an adapter so that the Ronin S can be mounted to the Glide Gear arm to help support heavier setups. To that end I have tried the C200 on the Ronin S with the Glide Gear Arm and can report it is awesome. I could not imagine using the C200 on the gimbal without some sort of support. I have not done any testing beyond balancing with the C200, and mounting the Ronin S/C200 onto the arm and shooting some spray and prey footage ( I have not attached the monitor as I have not received the monitor adapter yet). Anywho, here are some quick picies of the setup. Comments or question welcomed.2 points -
I'm definitely not JB, but I can talk about testing, having been involved in software development and testing in my day job. The short version of why things are released with bugs is this: A company figures out that they can build a camera with X features in Y time, and they think that it will fill a niche and make money They start to develop it, and due to how dependencies in projects work, development takes longer than anticipated The company knows that releasing a product late is a huge mistake, especially in a rapidly developing market, but they also know that releasing a product that is flawed is also a bad idea The company goes into TESTING, where people are using the camera, noting down issues, annoyances, and product features in a big database Everything in the database is ranked (according to importance) and then allocated to a tech to fix Once an issue is fixed it is then sent back to the person who found it to test it again It is common for a change to fix something but break something else, and it's also common for a problem to be caused by two things (eg, hardware and software, or two different software modules) not being completely aligned. Communication needs to occur, discussions to understand what is happening, what to be done, implications etc.. At some point (normally the publicised release date) a huge meeting is held and all the remaining items to be fixed are reviewed by management and the decision to release it anyway is made. It is very very very rare for something to miss the delivery deadline because of the number of issues. The process of identifying, tracking, fixing, testing, continues during the lifetime of the product (and is why there are firmware updates to a product) In reality there will be thousands, maybe tens of thousands of items involved in a process like this. Nothing is ever perfect. It is not possible to test every function with every combination of data. Here's a quote from an article about developing the software for the space shuttle: [Edit: here's the link to the below] I highlighted the relevant passages in bold. Obviously, NASA has more at stake with software problems than a consumer electronics company, and even then, they can't possibly test everything. There is a typical divide in culture in an organisation around Risk. IT and engineering professionals are normally trained in a culture of excellence, where due to advanced mathematical training, there is often an underlying and often unconscious mindset of there being one answer to a question, and therefore one solution to a problem, with the rest being sub-optimal. These teams are often incentivised by having KPIs and bonuses around system reliability. Sales, marketing, and product managers operate in "the market" which is complicated, messy, and is basically a shit-fight, and know that sales (and therefore profit) are more related to perception rather than facts, and they know that every day a product shipping date is delayed is lost sales. They know that nothing will ever be 'perfect' and are fully ready to 'explain away' any shortcomings of the product once it's in the market, but they can't do a single thing or sell a single unit until it is actually released. These people have KPIs and often have large percentages of their income based on sales bonuses. They care about quality, but only as it impacts sales. Often, Sales, marketing, and product managers think that IT and engineering professionals are ivory tower elitists who will 'gold plate' everything until the company goes bankrupt and products have to be ripped from their hands in order for the company to ever be finished and for anyone to ever get paid. Often, IT and engineering professionals think that Sales, marketing, and product managers are reckless, dodgy, cowboys who have no pride in quality, no understanding of shafting the consumer by fast-talk and no integrity, and they need to prevent products from being released too soon otherwise their lack of quality will immediately sink the company and no-one will get paid ever again. I hope this illuminates why products ship will bugs. It's a fundamental issue, and the final result is always a compromise.2 points

Any Sony A7 II users here - how bad is it really?
webrunner5 reacted to Robin for a topic
Of course like most cameras these days it's possible to get good results. There are better options clearly when it comes to video but here is a vid I shot on the a7 ii a year or 2 ago. (To see something by someone with less talent than the example above) Mostly just to put some video to my music and it's the cam I had with me in Kazakhstan at the time.1 point -

A good zoomlens with longer reach than the Sigma 18-35
newfoundmass reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Here is the first time I ever tried one, a Fujinon 19X f 1.7 with the 2x extender on my Panasonic AF100A. Picture of rig above. Had a 50 dollar B4 to m4/3 adapter on it. They can be incredible sharpness wise. I paid 150 bucks for it because the zoom motor was burned out from Adorama. Pretty common on them. There is a switch where you can disable the power zoom so works by hand easy. If you can find one like the picture below that says AT2 that is a newer version of the lens. It is HD. I had no problem even in 4K on my G7 with that lens. This is Fuji description of AT2 lens. So as you can see they are pretty damn good even for HD and better. "AT2 Aspheric Technology Many of Fujinon's HDTV and broadcast lenses feature Fujinon's AT2, which combines the company's exclusive Aspheric Technology with a new inner focusing system to greatly improve lens performance over conventional designs." I can also say the Panasonic AF100 is a hell of a great camera for as low as 600 dollars. Amazing output using a native m4/3 mount, decent AFS AF also. Tons of knobs, buttons. A true Cine Camera for peanuts. Great learning tool.1 point -
Any Sony A7 II users here - how bad is it really?

You should get a a7rii or wait a bit a a7sii price will drop as well. To give you an idea I sold my ursa mini 4.6k after getting a a7rii ( I initially got it for photo) because the it was excellent in video and could not justify keeping the URSA over it ( yes the URSA have better codec, but they both have fairly similar DR and the A7rii have better iso/autofocus /stabilisation and form factor) A7ii is definitely great for photos, but as other said it s not great for video.1 point -

If you want to be similar on the wide end to the Sigma but with some more reach (though not as much as a 70mm) then Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 might be worth a look for you. It is constant aperture so you won't be losing as much on the longer end as the other options and it is a very fine lens indeed. Used examples are generally around £400 so it won't break the bank either.1 point

Latest updated rumors https://nikonrumors.com/2018/07/09/additional-nikon-mirrorless-full-frame-camera-specifications-af-and-more.aspx/ Over 400 AF points, not sure about the exact number, it should be somewhere between 430-450. The AF is supposed to be very fast. The rear LCD screen is tiltable just like the Nikon D850. There is a second LCD screen on the top of the camera (just like the Fuji X-H1 pictured above) My understanding is that there is only one selection wheel on top of the camera. The camera's "prism" with the EVF is a bit less angular/smoother when compared to the Sony a7. I can now confirm that the new 24-70 mirrorless full frame kit lens will indeed be f/4. I see 8K listed in the technical specifications, but it is hard for me to get the translation - I don't think it's for video, maybe 8K time-lapse just like the D850? The new Nikon mirrorless camera will have a nice finish and a very comfortable grip. The overall handling/feeling is supposed to be excellent - this is coming from somebody who is/has tested the camera. Most likely no built-in flash. The promo materials should include dancers. Potential names: Z300 and Z500 (not confirmed at all, could be just a guess).1 point

So I finally updated my nightly build to the July 4th build and so far everything seems good... once I remembered all of my settings. I also tested the 4K crop module and in all modes it seemed unuasable. 2/3rds of the screen was whited out. And I really couldn’t get any higher resolutions/lower bit modes to work cleanly in LiveView. I don’t know if it was the build I was using or if I just didn’t have the correct settings configured... either way... I just reinstalled the latest nightly build.1 point

Editing Machine Question
Thomas Hill reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Oh no doubt you can build a heck of a editing machine for a Lot less money going the PC route. The edge PC's have is it IS the only real gaming platform, so there is always this big push for faster, better CPU's, GPU's. The only real edge Apple has for editing is if you are using FCPX. For any other platform PC's are the way to go. Any Mac is pretty far behind even a PC laptop when it comes to the GPU in them. And Resolve is a GPU hungry NLE. and also I think in a few more versions will be hands down the best NLE out there for just about any money. Now I doubt they are going to displace Avid Media Composer any time soon, but I bet they are going to try and do it, and sooner than later.1 point -
'EF Full Frame Package' -> 'EF Mounting Adapter with Kine Enhancer' -> 'KineEnhancer turns Kine camera from S35 to Full Frame camera (Very closely) and increase maximum iris to One f-stop when using Full Frame EF lens' -> 'Crop factor to: 1.1 when using on the TERRA 5K/6K, Crop factor to: 1.3 when using on the TERRA 4K' _____ Didn't pre-order the BMPCC4K. See no point in doing so. Atleast with Panasonic you might get a freebie or something (battery grip, V-LOG L activation). I'll just get one from the first store that has stock. Easy as that. Still quite excited for it, because the results from the original were awesome, it just wasn't very practical to use. This one seems to be... but indeed let's first wait if the results come close to the high expectations the first iteration has set. Sure hope they're able to pull of that thick lushious gradable filmic look with that Blackmagic mojo we've come to love.1 point

This site has a lot of tests and hardware recommendations for Resolve and Premiere Pro. https://www.pugetsystems.com/ I used to have an i7 4790k and 960 graphics card PC as well as an A7riii but I use Premiere Pro so what I say may not apply to Resolve. I first upgraded to a 1080 GPU but didnt find it made much difference - in fact I cant really seem to get my 1080 to run much higher than 50% load. I then upgraded my processor to an 8 core 7820x and this added a lot of performance.1 point -
Mini Doc shot in Mauritius - GH5s
Adept reacted to Bkn Soc of Cinematography for a topic
Shot this mini doc while on vacation in Mauritius. It's about those who work behind the scenes to uphold the illusion of paradise. Shot on GH5s, it was intended as a camera test as I wanted to see how 60p and V log play. So it's shot on either 4k 8bit or FHD 10bi at 60pt. In both cases, V log bands quite horribly even in 10 bit FHD. Unfortunately, being on vacation I didn't use an external monitor so I couldn't see the banding until I got it on my computer. I hope this is something Panasonic can fix, at least in 10bit (no excuse). I love Vlog in 10bit 4k non 60p. But I'll probably have to experiment with HGL settings which is a drag because I prefer Vlog overall and I'd hate to have to mix the two settings for a sequence. Also, I shot it with Olympus 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8. Love both of these lenses as the manual focus is excellent. I used a monopod for the 40-150 and handheld for the 12-40. Coming from a film background, I don't miss the IS. A little camera shake doesn't kill me, especially for a doc. It was my first time using the 40-150. This lens is superb and worth every penny. But it's not a handheld lens. It has the reach of a 70-200 in FF and that extra 40 over the Panasonic 35-100 makes a huge difference. Also being able to switch to true manual (no fly by wire) is worth it. Here's the link. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=9O0cuTdsl8A1 point
