  1. What are the best smartphone lenses out there and are there any decent optics tests online? I know brands like Moment lead the way (perhaps with their marketing) but are there better options for an iPhone 11? Looking for quality over price although of course when it comes down to it price will be a concern. Thanks.
  2. I do modifications on big to medium lens, the last one modified Moller 63/2x minimum fd was 1,8m (6ft) until couple of days ago, when modified even further, haven't tested it yet. The price of modification for lens is 250-500€. Optional rehousings available. Waiting time 30-60 days. Servicing starts at 85€, waiting time 7-14 days. You pay shipping charges both ways.
  3. Ok so there was a previous forum thread regarding a rehousing project for the LA7200. Based off the video there, I have had this design in my mind for my own rehousing project and improvements as well for close focus and/or marrying the LA7200 with a manual focus lens and making an all in one lens solution for the Canon 5d Mark III.   Progress is starting off well. Getting the hang of AutoCAD and designing as such.   I am planning on first prototyping with a 3d printer I have access to then going to a further manufacturing step from there. Not trying to get too ahead of myself however you can keep track of the progress and id appreciate comments or suggestions regardless as I try to work this out.   Steps:   Design model in AutoCad --- 15% Port model into Google Sketchup 3D print prototype Test Prototype Test again.... Make changes... Probably test again.... Use AutoCad model for CNC machining Produce final model.   Planned features...   Close Focus and far focus at a twist of the ring. Easy to handle enclosure Focus ring easy lens adjustment Standard housing to fit Cokin P or other diopters much easier   Possible features   15mm rail mount auto adjusting focus solution Housing combined with Aperture adjustor on a Canon FD manual Lens Direct connection to the 5d Mark III basically making it a hack lens using a custom EF mount or 72mm thread AF confirm chip? (not a bad idea) All the lens flares! (ALL THE LENS FLARES!) Er multicoating removal. Something like that.   Close to exact Measurements via caliper - (short of cutting the existing enclosure in half. I could not get the measurements exactly for how close the back and front lens elements are in terms of distance)   Front Element - Concave Width: 84.90mm Height: 72.96mm Depth: 16.25mm   Rear Element - Convex Width: 52.96mm Height: 40.99mm Depth: 4.13mm   Front Element Holder depth - 17.82mm Outer Hood Depth - 13.14mm   Approx 23.8mm distance between the two lenses. (not entirely sure on this. Like I said, cant figure it out unless i cut the thing in half and really I want to be able to use it until the enclosure is finished at least)   All in all, working pretty well so far. Got the elements into AutoCad, and its time to start designing the enclosure for it.
  4. Hello! I would like to share my work done with GH5 + FM Lens (Kowa inside) and russian taking lenses. Musicvideo is still under work but here is promo clip for upcoming video. Will post it here soon when it's complete.

  6. Hey Guys! I wanted to show you a short film I shot on the Sony A6000. A great video camera on a budget in my opinion It is my first short film, and it was all shot and edited in one day, I didnt have more time. Lenses I used were the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, Helios 44-2 and a cctv 35mm 1.7 Hope you Guys enjoy it ! Please let me know what you think about it I shot it for the Sony professional competition, so if you enjoy it, please like it on youtube. thanks !! Cheers from Germany Micha
  7. I am looking to build a lens set for my BMCC MFT that has the following characteristics; High contrast Lots of color saturation I have tried some lens like; Canon FD - beautiful creamy look Sigma Art Lens 18-35mm - great low light and sharp but sort of sterile Some Rokinons - I am sort of leaning back towards these SLR Magic 12mm - great lens I use it for low light and wide angle but I am not sure what its characteristics really are. I am really going for a warm skin tone, high contrast, HDR look, lots of color saturation almost to a comic book level, very much like from this fight scene www.anyclip.com/movies/doa-dead-or-alive/women-fighting-in-rain/ I know most the heavy lifting would be done in post but I need to commit in general to a lens set. What about Angenieux and certainly these looks tempting https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/665053329/veydra-m4-3-cinema-lenses-for-gh4-and-bmpcc The trouble I am having is that people seem to love the desaturated look so it has been very hard to make a decision from other peoples footage. I know renting the lens would also be a good idea. I own the Sigma 18-35 and the SLR Magic 12mm so it would be great to stay within those but since I am posting this I guess that means I am not entirely sold. Thanks in advance for your input!
  8. Hey, Was wondering if anyone could give me a hand with this. I am totally new to this topic, I know absolutely nothing about it. I work for a local movie theater, and they had an old projector upstairs, with this lens attached to it. The manager said I could take it, so I figured I'd post online to find out more about it, and maybe see if it's worth anything. I had troubles uploading the pictures directly, so I hope linking is okay on this site. Lens is in good condition, just needs to be cleaned up. Hasn't been used in years. Thanks in advance. http://tinypic.com/r/2d94izn/8 http://tinypic.com/r/c3xja/8 http://tinypic.com/r/mv46zb/8 http://tinypic.com/r/w811jn/8
  9. Hi, I've got pretty nice lenses for my 5D Mark III. Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 USM Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 USM Since those lenses are made for fast autofocus operation for photography, the distance from the nearest focus point to infinity on the focus ring is quite short. This should make it harder to pull focus smoothly. Here is a short explaination:
  10. Hi, I would be hugely greatful if someone can offer me some advice on this lens and the problem i have with it. I have just recieved a Isco - Gottingen lens and the focus ring seems to be locked at 16m. I'm unable to focus and was hoping someone was able to inform me the correct way to be able to fix this, or inform me as to which sew to undo. Many thanks for you time :)
  11. Noktor asked me to test out their new SLR Magic Hyperprime 10mm T2.1 for MFT. Thought some people might interested to see footage, as lately most MFT tests are done on the GH4. Here's the video: It's a pretty good wide angle option for the non-Speedbooster folk. Thanks for watching!
  12. I have a question regarding the LA7200, basically in order to focus you would to move the back lens element or front. Would that be correct? Would it be possible to allow focus by adding another lens element behind the flat back lens element. Not sure how the image is presented by the square back of the LA7200. Im currently in the process of modifying it and frankensteining the lens with old junked vintage lenses to make it one whole lens that does not need a taking lens. Just want to make sure I have the physics right. Thanks in advance.
  13. I just got an A6000 and the SEL 35 1.8 lens. On some shots I occasionally see a very subtle ripple effect. I don't think it's caused by rolling shutter and sensor readout speed, it seems like it's optical to me. I say this because I haven't noticed rolling shutter when shooting with un-stabilised lenses. I had the optical steady shot on, and I wonder whether this is the culprit. I'll try to post a clip later, but I wondered whether anyone has had similar experiences either with this lens or other Sony OSS lenses?
  14. Comparing the complete set of Rokinon cine-style lenses at 4K
  15. Testing the sharpness of the Rokinon Cine 85mm with Lens Turbo on the Pansonic GH4
  16. Hi all, I'm moving from the BMCC MFT to the Sony A7s. The BMCC all rigged up is just too much for me as a one man band, too heavy and too many pieces to put together and keep track on. The pay off (the image) is worth it, but I feel it's limiting me creatively in a bad way. I also want to get back into still photography (Never had full frame before, this should be interesting). That's also why I'm getting rid of my Nikon AI(s) primes. I want zooms. Not because they're better, but more convenient, I got more of a "on the go in available light" kind of style. Nikon mount is great with adapters thanks to a click-less aperture control, but it would be nice to have autofocus as well (apparently that's a no go with Nikon according to my googling and forum reading skills), but everything Canon leaves a bad taste in my mouth (well.. not really, I'm just as skeptical as any other DSLR shooter who started out on Canon and saw them staying behind on purpose). I haven't found a good affordable alternative to Metabones yet. Likewise with native Sony FE mount. Full frame also use all of the glass, so I'm being more careful about the quality in the edges this time, nothing I had to worry about before, really. For 1080 video I guess it's alright, not really noticeable, but when taking stills and maybe later 4K video... What is acceptable? Not asking for perfection, I got more of a "on the go in available light" kind of style. I really like to film/photograph people in their surroundings. Sláinte!
  17. Hello! I recently picked up a GH3 and am wondering what lens setup to purchase. I have done some research and am thinking about these two options. 1. Metabones Speedbooster with a Sigma 30mm 1.4 II (Nikon Mount) as I had the old Sigma 30mm 1.4 on my 550D and loved it! 2. Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 and the SLR Magic 12mm f1.6. Would love to know what you guys think! Thanks :)
  18. Hello! I bough this Dylaiscope Junior 16 anamorphic projector lens from ebay last week for $51, I was very surprised No one ever out bid me. Optically it is in pretty good shape, some minor cosmetic scratches on the body. The main problem I have with it is the focus ring is fairly difficult to turn. I basically need to take it off the mount to set focus everytime because Im afraid I will put unneccesary stress on the lens and mount attached to the camera. I was just wondering if anyone has any experince or knowledge about lubricating lenses. I already know it is generally not a good idea for a non profession to take apart an anamorphic lens since all the elements need to stay perfectly alligned, but I was wondering if anyone knows the function of the 3 screws towards the back of the lens seen in the picture. I can sorta see a bar inside the lens that they seem to be holding. I have taken apart old Canon fd mount lenses before and reassembled with no issue but Im sure this is a bit more difficult. What would happen if I were to loosen those screws? It seems to me that this lens has probably been sitting somewhere for a very long time and the original lubricant has become less oily or something. I removed the face plate of the lens with all the writing on it and removed some of the grease and found it was a greenish shade, which I read from other forums is a type of grease known for sticking over time, not sure if it is the same grease used throughout the lens though. From what Ive read Dyaliscope lenses are of pretty good quality but havent been able to really find much about them. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.
  19. I'd like to set up a post where people can talk about their experiences having their anamorphic lenses serviced and repaired. I have very limited knowledge and (fortunately) no experience with an actual repair so far, but please contribute if you have something that you can share here. Many of these lenses are very old and might need some work! In no particular order: GENERAL ANAMORPHIC LENS REPAIR Super 16 Inc (New York) - Bernie O'Doherty repairs and services anamorphic lenses. From Bernie: "A maladjustment of 1/64th to 1/32nd of a degree can mean the difference between a sharp image and one that needs a close-down to f4/5.6 to provide a decent image. And customers seem to accept lower image quality where anamorphic lenses are concerned. Of course, some lenses have imperfect design features which prevent optimum image quality, but, in general, after a good optimizing, most lenses, even anamorphic, benefit from such a servicing." Focus Optics (California) - They may service other anamorphic lenses. When I emailed them, I got a one-line reply that said something like, "Yes, we service anamorphic lenses". Which ones, I am not sure of. Abel Cine Tech (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles) - I came across a forum in which they offered their services when someone asked about a problem Kowa. ISCORAMA REPAIRFocal Point Lens (Colorado) - John Van Stelten was the official one-man Isco projection lens repair service in the United States up until they were absorbed by Schneider a few years back. He has worked on lots of Iscoramas. He is one of the few lens repair specialists that I have talked who offers lens polishing and re-coating. It's not cheap and it can be risky, but in some cases, this process successfully removes any trace of scratches, coating issues, and fungus that has etched into a lens element. He also has an autocollimator, which is essential for re-callibrating lenses after they have been taken apart. Nippon Photo Clinic Service (New York) - They are listed in the Wikipedia article on Iscorama as being a repair show that can service Iscoramas. They can probably service Kowa and Bell & Howell as well. I need to give them a call to confirm (they are closed for the weekend). LOMO REPAIROlex Camera Services (Ukraine) - I have emailed back and forth with Olexandr quite a bit with questions about my Lomo square front. He is very knowledgeable. I have not yet had to employ his services, but Ed Lee of the Lomo Anamorphic User blog has, and he's given Olexandr high marks. I wish that Olexandr accepted PayPal! Super 16 Inc (New York) - Services Lomo anamorphic lenses. See mention above for more info. RafCamera (Belarus) - Rafael can install PL mounts and geared rings on Lomos. Focus Optics (California) - They service Round Front and BAS model Lomos.
  20. Hi guys. So let's say in theory if Metabones brought out a EF lens mount specifically for the GH4 with electronics, which I'm about to buy), and we lived in this universe.... I'm going to make the move from TV documentary editing/shooting into directing short films, more commercials, more music videos/ and a step up to a documentary DV director. That sort of thing. I'm planning on getting the GH4, with a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 as my first lens, as it is by all accounts a very high quality lens and would fit me perfectly for most situations. So... do I buy the GH4 with a speed booster with a nikon mount, and a nikon mount Sigma? Or do I wait for a possible soon to be released metabones speedbooster for the GH4, EF mount with electronics etc and a canon mount Sigma? I'd like your (much more knowledgable about DSLR's) guys opinions?! If I got the GH4, with a speed booster, which glass is the wise to invest in? I don't have a lot of money to spend on lenses in the near future, so I'd rather cheap quality glass in general. Canon/Nikon mounts? Which one in general is cheaper for a high level of quality? Which is just the best in general for someone like me? Who wants to start shooting low budget short films and features? Also what's the actual benefit of a EF mount with proper electronics? Does it just mean that I could use the autofocus feature on the GH4 with the Canon lenses? Any other benefits? Would it mean that lenses with image stabilisation would work on the canon lenses while on the GH4, and an imaginary speed booster which would allow such a thing?
  21. Hello I'm trying to figurate what lens are the best for me. Art Director and Visual Effect Artist with more than 10 years of experience. I want to enter in the film directions realms and buying a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera for start, and need advice for lens for videoclips and short films mainly, to archive the best cinematography quality possible. Budget $3000 top for cover all the lens range, (no run and gun, no vintage lens ... from now) This are my options: Option A: $2530 Metabone SpeedBooster (SB) for BMPCC: $490 24mm: Samyang 24mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Nikon F $700 35mm: Samyang 35mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Nikon F $520 50mm: NIKON 50MM F1.4 AIS: $470 85mm: Samyang 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Nikon F $350 _________________________________ Option B: $2621 Metabone SpeedBooster for BMPCC: $490 SLR Magic 12mm 1.6 $600 Sigma 18-35 1.8 $855 Tamron 28-75 2.8 $676 Total: $2621 _________________________________ Option C: $2170 Sigma Zoom 14-35 $855 Sigma 24-70mm $825 Metabone SpeedBooster for BMPCC: $490 _________________________________ Lens Discarted: Samyang 10mm Is not Yet in the market :( Pana 18-35 - Barrel Distortion Tokina 11-16 Blurry Edges with SB What options you think is better for me ?, Do I miss some lens focal for the bmpcc or something else ?? Please Help!
  22. Hi guys, I've bought an Olympus OM10 film camera with a 50mm lens. Because I wanted a zoom lens to use with it I got through ebay a sigma 28-80mm f 3.5-4.5 UC zoom. I have just received the lens and I notice that sometimes half of the focus aim inside the viewer gets darker or black. If I'm not wrong it happend too with 50mm lens but then during my photoshots it never happened again. Does anybody knows why this happen?may it be because the camera had no film inside (I was just trying the lens) or because I was in a poor light environment? Thanks for everything guys!
  23. I made my first anamorphic purchase with a Kowa 16-H.  I am waiting for Redstan adapters and I wanted to get  some feedback on which taking lens would be ideal with my setup.   I've heard that anything below 80mm will vignetter due to the Kowa's 2x and the mk III sensor size.   For any mk ii / mk iii owners out there... what taking lenses are you using/recommend for your Kowa 2x?
  24. Hi I am planning on buying Rokinon/Samyang Cine lenses for my dslr, but as I was searching for a place to buy them, I saw a difference between the names of the same lense for example this two : 1) Rokinon 85mm T1.5 AS IF UMC Cine lens 2) Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine lens So I searched and I saw that UMC referees to the coating and its seems to be different from the other one. And I don't know what IF stands for tough. So is different? Is the first one better than the other one? I also found a difference in the name between the Samyang ones and the Rokinon ones, which surprises me because they are supposed to be the same lenses, right? 3) Samyang 35mm T1.5 ED AS UMC 4) Rokinon 35mm T1.5 AS UMC So now I am even more confused because I don't know what ED stands for... Please help me out understanding this. Are they actually different? Or are they exactly the same lenses? Thanks :) PS: Sorry if I made a mistake in spelling, english is not my first language.
  25. I'm looking to learn how to fully clean/repair lenses more than simply puffing with a blower and wiping with a cloth... I have a bunch of old P entax SMC lenses that I don't mind pulling apart (two of them have a little fungus) and want to use them to practice repairing old manual primes. Unfortunately I can't find much online, nor any books on the topic. I have even tried to find information on specific lenses (Pentax, Nikkor etc.) but still nothing detailed. So essentially I am asking if anyone knows of books/websites etc. here I might be able to learn anything related to pulling lenses apart, cleaning/repairing them, and putting them back together again (all stages being vital!). I understand that this is as much a science as a skill, with precision and math being vital... but surely the talented folks repairing lenses haven't all learnt through apprenticeship? I've been pulling apart and re-assembling things since I was a kid (to various degrees of success), and sooner or later I'm just going to dive in... so please educate me before I make a mess!
